thank you for this _ just got a juki [ first time sewing w/ an industrial machine ] and I couldn't find a vid that explaining bottom tension clearly. I have subscribed!
Thank you for your video but I do not have that kind a Bobbin I have a designer one it has a drop in bobbin the case is in the machine if you could show me how to do that I would be eternally grateful!!! Thanks Steve
I have no problem sewing cotton material. Once I start oth micro active polyester the machine start to skip stitches. I have adjusted the stitch length, switch between size 11 and 14 needles....no change. Don't know why this is happening as I had no issues stitching this type of material before. I have Saito industrial machine
i know im randomly asking but does anybody know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb lost the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Grayson Ruben i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
You're amazing! I realized that I was tightening the wrong screw. I can't wait to go back to my machine and try this. I've sewn on this machine since I was a teenager, and it belonged to my grandmother! I'm 75 now, but unfortunately I forgotten some of what I used to know about adjusting the machine... This is really helpful! When I have to call out a serviceman, he charges me $50 and I don't really see what he does, so it's not all that helpful... Bravo for UA-cam and you!
Steve thank you! I inherited my Grandmothers Husqvarna Viking (64 40). Although she taught me to sew on this very machine as a preteen, this machine has forgotten, abused & left abandoned in shed. No love. No oiling. No adjustments. She would not even stich. Now... she's sewing like a champ! Thank you!
This was a lifesaver for me! In my manual, it just said to jerk on the thread. But I would have never thought to just let it roll! Now it is perfect and I am not frustrated. Thank you! Thank you!
You literally just saved me with my machine.... I've been messing with this knob for 2 hours and still got crap stitches, I UA-cam it and you pop up and teach me top tension along with how to set bottom. THANK YOU THANK YOU. I can continue making mask now at a faster rate.😁
Thank you, this was great, I have had bother with my machine for a while now and I also searched the internet for ages for a solution but your instruction is by far the best, that’s me sewing again!
Oh man ! Just what i needed. My repair guy showed me this procedure on my consew 227 about 10 years ago, but i forgot, and this jogged my memory back. Consew 227 bobbin carrier needs to be unscrewed though. The adjusting screw you showed was loose "as it should be for easy thread sliding" but i mistakenly tightened it down. Big mistake. You saved me alot of frustration....thank you my man !
Where have you been all my sewing life?! I have been sewing for over 55 years and never knew how to get the correct tension. This is exactly what I was looking for tonight. THANKS
@@BagBuff Hi. A bobbin question I'm using tex 40 bobbin thread for my tex 80 topstitch thread on a twin needle machine. For the life of me the bobbin thread keep cutting off and won't continously lockstitch with topstitch thread. I'll get a few stitches in before the topstitch thread stop looping and I have to open up the machine constantly to pull the bobbin thread through the slots, groves and spring over and over to get the top thread to catch bobbin thread. Any advice?
OMG. I can't BELIEVE I just learned something new about my sewing machine from a guy! You are FRICKIN AWESOME DUDE! This damn thing has been driving me nuts for YEARS now. I turned the thread bobbin (what I call backwards, counterclockwise) and now it feeds PERFECTLY! Thank you! 👍
Thank you so much this has completely solved my problem, have been sewing for over 20 years and never realised I could tighten the tension on my bottom bobbin😂
thank you ♥ huge thank you. I'm totally new to sewing machines and many tutorials are either "how to thread" (ok, I've learned that) or "ok, now we're sewing" and I'm like "but.. hey, wait! what.. what goes in which direction? what if it falls out and is not going back! and how to..". Some things seem to be so obvious to many teachers that they dont' show it and I don't even know how to ask about sth I can't name XD and now, showing this bobbin which shouldn't unwind like a crazy workaholic on lsd, you solved my year-long issues. thank you!
Absolutely loved this video. I bought another sewing machine, and realized it was me, I could not resolve the tension issues. The needle thread kept breaking and breaking. This was the 1st video that actually explains the bobbin tension. So I'm going to go take a look at my machine. 😊 I will update you.
Thanks! this helped a lot. I have been sewing for over 45 years and was always taught to NEVER touch that screw in the bobbin case. Such a dummy... anyway, just pulled my daughters old Kenmore out of the shed after 15 years. it was full of rust and bugs. AFter cleaning it up and oiling it, it runs fairly well. Still pretty tight and the thread just isn't flowing freely. I will make the recommended adjustments and possibly replace the bobbin case and shuttle since there is still some abrasive rust inside the parts that I could not reach. Fantastic Video!!!!
Oh my gosh, your two videos on tension saved my mind! I made a small, double zipper bag and my tension was not right. I got it done but resolved to find out what was going on with the tension. Your videos helped so much. Thank you! I was able to make patio curtains today with no issues
Holy moly! The reason why i stopped learning how to sew was because of this problem. It was more than 10 years ago when I borrowed my mom’s sewing machine. I just wanted to hem my jeans. I did not know anything back then including the word “tension”.. I always experienced a very problematic inner stitch everytime and I did not know that the lower tension only needs to be readjusted accordingly and also to defluff all those lints,etc.. Thank you so much for this! It helped me de-stress today lol
Thank you so very much! I have a Juki Jin NA 11UT and my tension was off. I didn't know how to adjust it and was afraid I'd make it worse. This is the BEST video I've seen explaining how to adjust the bottom and top tension. Mine is sewing great now.
I can not thank you enough for this very simple solution to an issue that was driving me nuts! With your direction I was able to fix all my tension issues. Thank you thank you thank you!
holy shit you saved my life! im in fashion school and i have my apparel const. test tomorrow and for some odd reason my machine wasn’t cooperating. now it works just fine, thank you so much!
same here..I've been watching tension vids for like an hour and they are all the same..no one ever takes the bottom bobbin out and shakes it..thank you I almost fixed my problem but it's getting there
OMG! You are my new favorite person!!! I have had an older Brother serger now for about four years that was hardly used by the previous owner, but have been unable to find a manual for it. INSTANTLY...I found it on manualslib.com! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
this video is AMAZING. You explained everything I need to know in just 3 minutes which all those really long videos about tension couldn't. I could finally fix everything so thank you so much!!! Such a big help
Thank you!! I just switched weight of PTFE thread and was having a booger of a time correcting tension on my Juki 1541. I’ve read my manuals and taken a couple of machine troubleshooting classes at fabricators conference but still had trouble with bobbin tension. No one ever showed me your “spider coming down from the ceiling” trick. Heading back out to my shop now to fix it! Looking forward to your other videos, as I am transitioning from custom boat canvas to bags due to arthritis in my hand.
Holy crap I love you!!!! I have a jack F4 and since i got the thing it had been skipping stitches on knits. I just fixes it thanks to another video but then my bobbin tension ended up being SUPER loose. Now it's perfect and i can fix the top tension. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thanks for these helpful videos,I haven't sewn in many years ,and I had totally forgotten what my grandma tought me about the bobben tension .Two seriously happy cousins are back in the old sewing machines. We both bought sewing machines at a yard sale recently and literally thought we were jipped . You the man!! I was gifted an old singer 6215 (Brazilian made) was working fine then the metal plate on the black bobbin housing cracked. Ordered 2 new ones from Amazon but the sizing on both was slightly off. Ended up taking the new metal plate off and putting it on the original bobbin housing. Also decided to lube my entire machine at the same time. Couldn't hold a stich since. Glad I found your video!
Dude thank you much my bottom tension has been out since I bought my machine you explained it all so clearly and now I can sew like a pro. Wonderful video, top guy!!
That is the most information on bobbins I’ve learned this far. I’ve read my manual but it’s not very descriptive at all. Many thanks! Can’t stress my gratitude enough, my machine has been kicking my butt. Just started this hobby can you tell 😀
Thank you so much! I tried fixing my sewing machine about 4 years ago looking at UA-cam and didn’t get anywhere. I just tried again and found your videos and it’s fixed! It’s not perfect, but I can use it again.
Most helpful video I've ever watched about bobbin tension! I snapped like 2-3 needles already cause my sewing machine's tensions are not right and have no idea what's the problem
Thank you for making this video. I had no idea how in the heck to interpret the manual-it was very subjective and I’ve never had a machine where I had to set the tension.
You saved me from subscribing to a stress management course. No more tension issues. You're a pro. Ever tried stand-up comedy? Seams like you could do well.
wow this video just helped me so much, i had no idea how to adjust my bottom tension and it was waay too tight.. and what was happening.. my top thread kept snapping all the time..i was just not able to sew anymore at all, it would just snap literally immediately.. and after adjusting the bottom tension, i can sew again ! thank you very much.. i have just subscribed to your channel :D
Man!!! I appreciate your time to explain this SH@&$/@ problem. I will go back home now to fix it. 😁👍 I've been struggling with my machine for two months now without experience and trying to solve this by myself with no luck. How foolish not to look on UA-cam. Thank you Steve. Subscribed with no hesitation 🙏
Many thanks! I'm returning to sewing after a break of about 40 years! I've bought a 2nd hand old Singer 449 and found it will only sew with top tension on max - so, trial and error for bottom tension is slow and tedious. Your method looks great for bottom tension and I'll try it soon. Best wishes.
Thanks Steve! Great video, and presented in such a succinct manner. I’m setting up my Mum’s old Janome, and was looking for a short video to explain the correct bottom tension. Yours is simply the best. 👍🏼
Thanks for the video. It was informative. I have been trying to find the proper bobbin tension measurement for some time now. I bought a gram scale for the purpose of being able to check bobbin tension precisely, but can't find the information. The only thing that would make this video any better would be to include the data of how many grams of force it took to pull the bobbin thread. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! I got an old Pfaff that has that kind of a bobbin, but was really intimidated to tough it. You explained it so well, im going to takle it 😉 Im pretty sure that’s will fix my problem 👍
thank you Steve, I've just watched your 'bottom tension' video, I've always had problems with my Necchi machine, I had an Elna previously which was brilliant and I cried when it died, it took me 2 years to throw it away, it was too old to get the parts! I've just altered the bottom tension and it's sewing better than it's ever done! Still don't like it though, but I don't sew very often now so I'll have to put up with it!!!
Thank you for a short video on this bobbin tension problem. Soooo many videos are just so long talking about other stuff and not getting down to business ! You’re was 👌🏽
Just got my juki8100e yesterday the bottom fabric was gathering a little as I sewed, was using two pieces of cotton fabric with a little wadding between I was trying to find out which tension I needed to fix and I found your channel. I am now thinking it's my bottom tension that needs fixing so will try this later to see if it's to tight. So pleased I found your channel I have a feeling I will be visitingoften.
Nicely done Steve. Thank you. I will adjust the bobbin as you instructed, but wonder if there is something more that is contributing to the stitch actually tearing through the fabric. I sew a straight line through doubled fabric. When I pick up that portion and give it a slight pull, the fabric splits on the sew line. I have a Singer 331K4 for upholstery. I had not used it in a year, as we moved to a larger property and have been busy with general ranch work. I set up my upholstery shop again and now need the machine. There are no repair shops within a hundred miles, so could surely use your sage advice. Dominick
Hello Steve, I really appreciate you offering to help people who are having trouble sewing on an industrial sewing machine. I have 2 industrials one is a pfaff 1183 that is single needle lock stitch and I'm having a nightmare with the timing, I did take it in to a professional for maintenance 2 times and still not working properly, if you have any insights on that I would really appreciate it. My second machine is a new juki DU1181 N which is a walking foot, since it is new I'm having a hard time learning tension and pressure and all these different variables especially since I sew many different materials and accordingly different thread weights and needle sizes, but I'm hoping it is just a learning curve and hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon.
Very clear and useful video! I often have the problem of my sewing machine getting blocked (it starts making weird sounds and the thread gets all blocked up). I always rethread the machine (bottom and top) and it the problem still keeps on reoccuring. Any tips are more than welcome!
Your video is a clear understanding point . What happens next if once the bottom tension is correct and still not even within the material . I have had this happen on both my Elna 1010 and my White 1510 .
Thanks for your videos. I watched both fix top tension and bottom tension. Tried them both and seems to have worked for the most part. The top thread is still sewing in a loopy line.
Thanks for the great video and invite. I spent hours changing threads, rethreading machine, adjusting thread and bobbin tension, cleaning, even running a pipe cleaner between tension disks, etc. I'm still having tension issues. I have Juki TL2000qi. I just started top stitching a project and at first both top and bottom stitches looked well formed and not loose. But about 13" into the sewing, the bottom stitches became very loose. I also tested the bobbin case (laying it on table surface and gently pulling thread - it flowed smoothly). When testing the bobbin tension, the bobbin almost always falls out and into my hand.?. Not sure that's right. I am out of ideas unless there is an unknown related to the bobbin case. I can't imagine what else to try. Any other ideas?
never used a machine before and I bought a singer spartan 192k just trying to learn how to adjust and setup to get going on practising running it. I am going to do some basic vinyl upholstery, nothing fancy so this was helpful and I will go online to the instructions now(update manual very easy to find)
Thanks.. What tension numbers.. Top and bottom would you suggest for 2 layers of cotton and 2 layers of medium weight interfacing with standard thread ?
Hey Steve, Started sewing about a year ago on an old Simplicity but just picked up a Janome' HD1000 BE. Love this sturdy little beast and I'm wondering if setting that Juki bobbin is the same as this model ? Suppose I could just go try it but only had this machine a week. Don't want to booger it up so soon.. Thanks
Hi there. Great video. I am using an Omega sew and go I bought to travel. It has a wonky bottom tension and a bobbin that only has a very different screw. The bobbin doesn’t drop like in your video. I’m assuming I need to find different bobbin holders
Love your videos. Just got a Juki and both my top & bottom tension are off. Which do I start with first? Bottom?? Automatic needle threaded will be a future learning lesson.
I was wondering if you have to keep adjusting tension if you are sewing on double thickness of leather then move to 3 layers 🤔please and thanks you are great at explaining the tension.
Great video, Steve, thank you! In your experience, is there ever a situation when you purposely run your bobbin tension too low/high? Like if you’re working with a certain fabric/ layers of fabric or certain type of thread?
This was going to be my next question, Steve. How do you know to alter tension for different fabrics and how do you choose the thickness of your thread?
I have an Elna SU and it doesn’t have a bobbin case. I’m trying to figure out how to loosen the bobbin thread for a twin needle. Your video was helpful though. I have 5 machines. The SU is my favorite!

I haven’t touched my machine in almost a year because of the tension issues I’ve had. This really helped answer my questions so thank you.

Thanks for posting this. Now I know how to fix the bottom tension on my Singer. You're a lifesaver!!
6 years later and this video is still relevant. Thanks sooo much.

Very nice. I was having trouble with the bottom tension and I fixed it!
I fixed the issue after 3 months struggling huuuuraaayyyyy
Thank you
Thanks so much Steve !! I was always bemused with tension issues and you make it so easy 🎉I wish I’d found you years ago !!!😊
thank you for showing me this! Mine was way to loose now its not! what a life saver your are!
Thank you for the great video. Had this machine kenmore since 1985 with thread tension issue, did what you said AND IT IS FIXED....:-)
Thank You soooooo much! I have been trying to figure out how to fix this for a week!
Just purchased a New Tech 0303D from Gold Star Tools and this is really helpful. A lot to learn but it will be worth it.
This actully work i think my did slide down like yours but u fixed my bottom tension which seamed to be to tight! Thank u Steve cheers
Thank you! Super helpful! Was a simple fix for something that had been frustrating me for weeks!
Oh my !!! Thank you so much , I was threading my bobbing the wrong way 🙌🏽God bless you
Thank you so much
I'm going to use my machine for the first time since I bought it.
God bless you
Wow 😮I have never had anyone explain this to me. So easy . Thanks 🙏🏼
Many thanks about which of the two screws on the bobbin to adjust. No more loose bobbin thread anymore on my friend's Singer 7102. Cheers.

This is probably one of the most helpful things out there
Thanks Steve!! You totally helped me fix the tension on an old machine that someone gave me. Was getting really frustrated.
Informative, brief, well-explained! You've saved me sooooo much time. Thanks so much! I love your videos!
Wonderful! Solved my problem with stitches below!!!! This is on my 52 year old Kenmore.
Your video is a clear understanding point . What happens next if once the bottom tension is correct and still not even within the material . I have had this happen on both my Elna 1010 and my White 1510 .
I've been sewing on my 206-rb5 for 2 years and never knew that, thanks!
Thank you for this Steve. Been struggling for days.
Thanks for your videos. I watched both fix top tension and bottom tension. Tried them both and seems to have worked for the most part. The top thread is still sewing in a loopy line.
Omg!!! That totally fixed my problem!!! Thanks. I am so happy I can start sewing now.
Thank you so MUCH!!! Just fixed my tension on my embroidery machine..
Great!!
YAAAAAAAAAAAY finally problem solved! I was driving myself crazy! Thank you 🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍😁😁😁😁😁
I have an Elna SU and it doesn’t have a bobbin case. I’m trying to figure out how to loosen the bobbin thread for a twin needle. Your video was helpful though. I have 5 machines. The SU is my favorite!
Thank you, I’m getting my little screw driver out adjust bobbin tension. Very helpful video
Loose bottom thread problem fixed! Thank you so much for the video!
