After watching dozens of videos, you are the first person to 100% confirm which screw to move … and which not to touch. Thank you!
This was very helpful. I use two size threads. Now, thanks to your video, I use two bobbins set at the perfect tension for each thread.
This video is a GAME-CHANGER! I am a sewing machine newbie - you now have a new subscriber! You’re an excellent teacher love❤
Thank you SO MUCH! I am a professional technician and I try to help as many people as possible, and I focus a lot on what I wish I'd known when I was first sewing!
thank you for this :-) the tension on my machine looked all wrong even after adjusting the top so I was about to panic, I didn't even know this was a thing but it worked miracles
Bobbin Genius ! This is a great tip where it hangs, but then drops a little. then I adjusted the top tension and now I am sewing! Thank you ! (Also did a test drive on the diagonal and the stitches held up)
I’ve been searching for this kind of tutorial for AGES and now I finally know what to do. All the videos I’ve watched were on the upper tension and now I have finally fixed my problem after almost a year
Glad I could help!
I just got a vintage arrow sewing machine for a steel and got it home and noticed someone put a different upper thread tentioner on it and the origanal was in a bag , so i put the original back on because the bobbin tention was so tight i could hardley pull the thread through , set my bobbin and its working like a dream , perfect example of someone not knowing how to set a balanced stitch , im new to sewing machines but watched my mom use singers growing up and now i buy 50s era machines restore and display them and all are in great working condition and i use them , thank you for posting this , im absorbing as much good knowledge as i can 👍👍
That's awesome! None of us are born knowing this, so I try to pass on as much info as I can. Our vintage machine cleaning course is about to launch at www.sewingdocacademy.com, it covers inside and out of all vintage machines, not just one model. These machines are the best, no modern machine will ever compare!
Very good demonstration. I often have clients panicking about this. Blessings. Viewing from the French island in the Caribbean.
Thank you so much for this great tutorial! I managed to correct the bobbin tension which was always a problem on my 35 year old Pfaff Tipmatic 1035.
Bless you!
Thanks! I was on the fence about front loaders. I was going to miss out on a plethora of great choices for my next sewing machine. I'm sure it's a learning curve worth going through. Keep up the great work. Education is everything.❤
Glad I could help!
at 1:15 you say this applies to all drop-in cases. however earlier in the video you say drop in cases will be covered in a different tutorial, and this one is for front and side-loading cases. I assume this is just a word mix-up? Thank you so much for this video, it's great to have the information so forefront without a lot of extra banter.
Hubby is restoring a 1950 Model 201-2. This will help a big bunch!! Thanks.
Fantastic information. Thank you for sharing. Now I know what to touch and what not to touch.
You are a lifesaver! My husband is required a mask by tomorrow for work and my machines been acting goofy! I am so thankful for this video because it solved the issue without costing me a lot of money to have someone look at it.
You are so welcome! This is my goal!
I took your advise on doing the drop test every time I put in a different bobbin thread. This has solved a major head ache for me .. trying to get even pulls top/bottom on my stitches. I usually just tweak the bobbin screw to get the drop right. Then I "may" have to go a half number on the top adjustment and my stitches are perfect! Yours is the better explanation on adjusting the bobbin I've seen. Thanks a butch! Give yourself a hug for me. :o)
You are so kind, thank you for that! I wish I'd seen this sooner, but UA-cam was apparently playing games with me.
thank you so much, i've been trying to figure out what was wrong with my sewing machine for more than an hour and this is the only video that's shown this technique!
My pleasure, thank you for your kind feedback!
Such excellent advise and so easy to follow. Thank you very much, you saved me a trip to a shop.
This was extremely helpful as a self-tought sewer (might be more accurate to say youtube-tought though 😂). Thanks for sharing the knowledge sis! Love from Spain ♥️
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much for this. I just bought a brother LS-1217 @ the Goodwill for $19.99. This is all that was wrong with it. Perfect fix, you’re the best❣️
That's wonderful! And that's a steal! That's a great machine :)
I’m still having a little trouble adjusting the thread tension. I’m sure it’s just a matter of adjusting the dial.
thank you for the great demo
My pleasure!
Wow you are super. Thank you not alot of people share such valuable information. I am a self learner sewer
My pleasure! I understand, me too! And I learned to service, restore, and troubleshoot sewing machines mostly by myself over the last decade because people do hoard the knowledge, so I am happy to pass on my knowledge!
What do you like to sew?
I always get a flying bobbin when I try this. Please-please-please tell me how you manage to keep your bobbin inside it's bobbin case?
I didn’t knew about this thank you for sharing I learned something new today
You are so welcome
Thank you for this. Really helpful. I managed to solve my tension problem. 🙂
What a wonderfully explained video
This is maddening. So much side talk on different things. Takes forever to just get to the instruction. It helps to actually see the bobbin area when you work the tension.
I'm sorry you didn't find the value in the video, I began instruction 2 minutes into the video, so you can easily skip ahead to what you need. It was originally created for a group of people in a class and I decide to make it available to everyone that would find it helpful, so take what's useful and leave the rest :)
@@SewingDocAcademy can you do a video for a top drop in bobbin? I have a brother pe535. Please?
Omg thank you for posting this video doc you are the best
Thank you! This solved my problem. I had no idea I could do this!
It is my pleasure Sharren, I'm so glad I could help!
Thanks Doc - great video! Appreciate you!
Very helpful, many thanks.
I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH! I restored my grandma's 1967 158 series Kenmore. I have the original manual, but the pictures are hard to understand. I have a Viking with a top loading bobbin, and that was my first machine. Do you have a video on upper tension on a vintage Kenmore? From what I understand, the late 1960's and 70's models had pretty much the same assemblies. I feel like the tension is too high on the dial. My bobbin with all-purpose thread was too high and I had to turn a half to achieve the "drop test."
Hi Alycia, I'm so glad this helped! I don't have videos specific to that, but I'll see what I can do! We are about to launch a ton of classes online that will address similar issues. Our website is www.sewingdocacademy.com, make sure you sign up for the newsletter so you'll know when they are available! I don't mean to try and sell you on anything, but this issue comes up a lot, and we will be addressing it!
yours is an invaluable site! thanks so much! I will be subscribing!
Thank you so much, happy to have you!
This was sooooooo useful thank you ..
Awesome...thanks I'm old and never knew this !
So beautifully explained👍
Thank you. It helped a lot!
Great explanation and solution!
Great information!
Thanks!
Thank you very helpful 💗
Great video. Well explained. Question...when I drop my bobbin case the bobbin falls out. Why?
I liked that you explained different kinds of thread types too.
And POI with my Singer 1591 I can wind a bobbin while leaving the machine threaded. ;-)
Thank you so much! This is the information I was looking for.😉
Nice job! I look forward to your future videos. Judi
Best tip I have seen thank you
Happy to help!
Thank you I was losing my tiny mind!
I totally understand, glad I could help!!
Just came across this video. Hope it’s not too late to ask a question. I have a Phaff 7570. When I bounce the bobbin case, the bobbin always slips out. The thread stays in the case, but only the bobbin slips out. Am I doing something wrong, or is the case too big? I am using the recommended size Phaff brand plastic bobbins.
Thank you so much ❤
My bottom thread is loose, but my bobbin appears to be very tight judging from the drop test. Please help
When sewing Jeans with Denim (medium to heavyweight), Should the bobbin tension be loose or tight? What should the thread tension be, loose or tight?
Thank you!
Thank you so much 🤩
thank you so much! this was a great tutorial :D
You have a new subscriber. What is wrong if bobbin falls out of case when Ishake the case and the case moves toward my hand?
just found your video. Having tension problems. I've a Baby Lock Accomplish side load bobbin case. I can't seems to adjust the bobbin case correctly. My bobbin case as a back lash or check spring load to it. So when I try to tighten and do the drop test the bobbin pops out. I want to use the 60 Wt bobbin thread. What am I doing wrong. PS when I sew my fabric will gather up and I can pulled the thread out.
I just did a much more elaborate method last week, this should help you:

Is there any type of bobbin case that has marks so you can put your bobbin tension in the correct space for using twin needles. This is such a problem for me when trying to figure out where to turn the screw in the right place for twin needles.... thanks - Noelle in Florida
Thank you so much. I really appreciate this.
You are so welcome!
Thank so much !!!
Thanks hope this works!!!
good advise thank you
thank you sooooo much
Gonna look for upper tension video now!
Fantastic!! Thank you so much
I see by your hair you went pre-mature mermaid. I've got tension issues for my vintage Morse photomatic. Need a check spring....but where to find one?
Hello ... my bobbing thread is too tight to pull up all of a sudden. I just loosened the bobbin like you said. Hopefully this works for me. It’s weird because it’s never happened to me before. I have been using the same white thread for a year. Any other suggestions? I have a singer start
Ok I just tried this ... it still hard to pull after adjusting. Could it possibly be something else? It does sew just when I’m done sewing I can’t pull the thread out like before
Super helpful! Thank you Andi!
thank you
My pleasure!
Thank you for this! 😃♥️
My pleasure!!

How do you adjust tension for elastics thread
Hi I have a Singer 221 and every time I try to sew, the top thread is pulled out if the Needle and then the machine locks up. Please help
Are you certain that it is threaded correctly? If it's missing a thread guide, is threaded incorrectly, or has issues at the upper tension assembly or check spring, you will have many different issues.
I do have a free on-deman workshop (totally free, no strings, I promise) that walk you through how to use your Featherweight. You may want to start there to be sure you have everything setup correctly. If that doesn't help, it sounds like it may need service. Here's the link to the FREE workshop:

Thank you :)
thanks

My bobbin just drops, dosent hold at all even when I tighten it
Is it tightened all the way? If it is, that means there is either something stuck under that spring (lint, maybe rust even) preventing it from sitting correctly. You can CAREFULLY unscrew the screws (one or two, however many yours has) to clean out under and put it back together. Just make sure you take it apart over a bowl or something because the screws are tiny, and that you remember which screw goes in which hole, because it does matter.

Thanks for the video ... problem solved
Glad it helped!
This is brilliant, thank you so much!
