Because the size of the bolt head can actually be different. Then you'd cry that it was 13mm instead of 15mm on yours because someone had changed it at some point. I don't know the stock bolt size of every single make and model believe it or not. Thanks for watching!

Never use a oil wrench to tighten a filter. Hand tighten only. If the oil plug has a crush washer replace the old with a new one.

Tacoma's are notorious for having difficult to read dip sticks. Once you change your oil and run your vehicle pull the dip stick, check it then set it to the side to allow the oil in the dip stick tube to drain back down. Leave it out for about 15-20 min then re check, it usually reads perfectly after doing this. Another truck it to use some fine grit sandpaper on your dip stick to rough it up a bit and give something for the oil to stick to.

But they are idiots and may not change your oil when you pay them to, which could cause a breakdown. So I guess you could say you're saving money in repair costs by doing it yourself. LOL

If you check your oil level immediately after shutting engine off, you won’t get a truly accurate reading! Why you might ask? Because there is a good deal of oil still in the top of your engine. Give it at least 15 minutes to drain back into the oil pan and make sure vehicle is sitting level. Simple physics.

It looks like you're placing it below the oil filter, and then just remove it, after install. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Clarify please.

After you drain the pan; there is still a small amount of oil in the oil filter. The oil filter is on top with a drain port on the bottom. If you remove the filter without the drain hose, you will end up with oil draining all over the place! By attaching the hose (or a soda bottle as someone else suggested) it allows you to rain the fluid into a container with no mess.

    • @treetopguy2028

Direct the hose flow to your oil catch pan. The hose will now have an oily coating so it’s future is restricted to be for draining the Toyota filter on future filter changes. Another reader suggested using an empty Powerade 20 oz. bottle. Another reader suggested stabbing or piecing the filter to allow oil to drain into the engine oil pan then to the oil catch pan. Be sure to reinsert the oil pan plug.

Jam some paper towels with a screwdriver around the base of the base of the oil filter, it also helps catch oil

James…the manufactrurers are all different. years ago the filter was next to the engine block but engines and cars have gotten smaller while space has become premium too. The old TV newman Walter Cronkite would say “And thats the way it is.”

I had an 85 Camry and the oil filter was on top I believe. I kind of prefer it that way because it seems easier to access and make my oil changes quicker.

So the first couple of times I did an oil change on my truck...no problems. But right around the 4th time (I guess I got lazy and thought I knew what I was doing so didn't pay very close attention).....I accidently drained my transmission fluid instead of oil ! Yikes ! Talk about feeling like an idiot, but come to find out this happens more than you would think so just a warning...make sure it is the OIL plug you are removing and NOT the transmission plug. Since it is a closed transmission, it was kind of a bitch getting the transmission fluid back in again, but I did it and won't make THAT mistake again. How did I figure it out? When I put my truck into gear and it wouldn't engage. Lucky for me that it WOULDN'T go into gear because I could have done some serious damage. I can laugh at myself now though....

I gave you a thumbs up because I made the same mistake in 2016 with a 2007 Subaru Forester. The engine got new oil and filter then the tranny got new fluid matched by specifications to Walmart’s SupoerTech. I was happier that both got done for the age of the car.

If you go under your truck from the front of the bumper, the first nut you encounter will be your oil drain and the transmission nut is further back. Going from the side MIGHT confuse you .

Do you mean on the rubber seal? If so, and the new filter doesn't come pre-lubed, then yes, put a small amount of oil on the surface of the rubber gasket. Some filters, like what he is using, do come pre-lubed so you can skip that step. Hope that helps!
