    The 4.0L from that era has got to be the easiest oil change. It's almost fun to do it!

    I really like that design by Toyota to have the oil filter right under the hood with such easy access. I wish all the vehicles had such convenient oil filter locations.

    Great video and thank you for explaining everything so clearly. The old bottle to catch the filter drippings is a nice hack. It’s amazing how simple it is to change the oil on a Tacoma vs my wife’s odyssey.

    I like your style. I wish the new Tacoma 3.5 2GR-FKS had the oil filter in that location.
    Yes the dust... so much contaminates in the air, especially in that closed shop of yours. Heaven forbid a dust particle getting in the engine. Now that motor will only last 1,000,000 miles.

      There is some kind of small-ish tiny tray underneath the oil filter to direct oil from dripping to the driveshaft/wishbone but unfortunately it will drip to the engine cross member instead which is even harder to clean lol.

    another great video with helpful tips all around - much appreciated; only one comment that I learned from my own ignorance - if you have greasable U-joints, grease them with every oil change. I did not know this, never greased em for 98k, they wore out and created this weird squeaking which i couldn't figure out - dealer knew immediately, and now replaced them with heavy duty non-greasing U-joints.
    last thing - ? dust going into the engine with the cap off - puleeez ....

    I know the AWD version has grease fittings on the drive shaft universals that should be serviced when you change the oil, easy to do while the truck is in the air. don't forget these. Good time to check the brakes for wear and check up on any rust developing under the car and especially the frame. Waiting forever for the last drip of oil to come out isn't necessary, there is probably a quart of dirty oil still inside the engine that you just can't get out so don't worry about it.

    literally the easiest Toyota motor to change oil in (besides the 4.7L in the Tundra/Sequoia) oil changes on my 2015 are the best and still use a real oil filter not a cartridge like the new 3.5L Turd Gen Taco

    Great video, Peter. My first time changing the Taco sauce was a mess! I was scratching my head, how in the world does Toyota engineer though of funneling the oil onto the serpentine belt?? After the clean up, I decided to install a rubber hose and uses soda bottle to catch the filter oil. But it is a very good idea by using an empty bottle to catch the fluid and waiting for the filter to drained.

    The switch to from conventional to synthetic came up in this video. You advised your customer to make a transition using a synblend before going to synthetic. I have a 2004 3MZ FE engine with 216k miles. As far as I know, it has had mostly conventional all its life except recently, What is your opinion about switching synthetic in an old engine like mine?

  • @dlg5485
    @dlg5485 4 роки тому +1

    I own a 2020 Tacoma with the 3.5 and for some reason Toyota moved the filter to the bottom of the engine and changed to a permanent filter canister with replaceable filter element. It's a pain in the ass to deal with, so I'm not sure why they went away from the easy 2nd gen setup.

    When you said it was done by the dealer, I know you know this, but others may not. Anyone can go to the dealer parts department and with some dealers they offer coupons for a filter. I buy mine for $4 plus tax in a major metro area.
    I like oil conversations. You said you really like the Napa syn blend. Why? Is it not just Warren/WPP oil? Can you detect any additional additive? I would try it if I was not already using synthetic because all my motors have run hot and probably because they were not maintained before I received them, in their younger years.

    Love watching your video's with my morning coffee. Got my 1st new Toyota in 1978. Own 4 right now & do all the maintenance on them. Your video's are to the point & not too long. Why does Toyota engineers design some engine's with reg. oil filters & some with the stupid element type. My 04 Tundra & 2010 Scion use the reg. filter & the 08 Sienna & 2014 Tundra take the element. This 2014 Tacoma takes the reg. filter. What's your view on this.

  • @jr-bo9kj
    @jr-bo9kj 3 роки тому

    At the end when you ran the engine for 5 minutes before checking the oil level again, did you leave the oil funnel in place or did you remove it and put the cap back on while waiting the 5 minutes?
    Thank you for this video. I want to do my own oil changed and I was feeling somewhat confident before this video but now I think I’m really ready

    • @henryostman5740
      @henryostman5740 3 роки тому +1

      I don't think he meant that. you start the engine and run till the oil light goes out, meaning engine has achieved operating oil pressure and the oil filter is filled, then shut off engine. you can then check the oil filter for any leak and the rest of the engine, fill out the paperwork (the oil change sticker), reset the oil change light, etc. while this is happening the oil is draining back into the crankcase so after a few minutes you can get an accurate reading off the dipstick. Back in the days of gas station attendants, the trick was to check your oil as soon as you pulled in, B4 it had a chance to drain back and then dramatically tell you with dipper stick in hand that youse was a quart low and get to sell you a quart that you probably didn't need. Probably more profit in selling a quart of oil that in filling the gas tank, gaz wuz only 50c a gallon then.

    Hello friend, I own a 2014 prerunner just like in this video and I'm approaching 100,000 miles. Is it ok if I wait a few thousand miles over 100k to have all that maintenance work done? (trans fluid flush, spark plugs, etc.) Times are tight right now

    • @LAactor

      Few thousand okay, but not many many many thousand. Try to within the next six months ok? But I understand, you need to eat first. Also try food banks, church donations and food stamps. Anything to add couple hundred more in pocket every month.

    I can understand your irritation with the "dust" but you call it dust however what did the person really mean and not just say. Can he mean anything could go down there and they want to prevent it? I did not think this until you showed the small hole of the dipstick and if they didn't say something about the dipstick, that is what I think they mean. But the larger learning moment here is you are showing us how much on one day you dislike customers. Maybe something or someone bothered you and you are not happy about them but this tells me the same thing many shop owners say. Some customers you cannot please and you hate them very much and it is what they hate the most about being a customer service provider. I hope you remember it is only a small part of owning the business that only a small percentage is never happy. Some bad people overcharge those people for the inconvenience. Overbill and they will shop hop and find a cheaper place and it will be someone else's problem. Unfortunately they are the loudest and oftentimes review and report on google and yelp and similar sites. But it is no longer your problem however your reputation may take a hit. Even putting a response on the review makes you look argumentative and a red flag. But maybe it is worth it in case you have to deal with them on a comeback and then they may be worse than most and not reasonable like most.
