      The ice reminds me of one of the coolest outdoor experiences I had growing up in Wisconsin. The ice on our local river was maybe 1 and 1/2 inches and clear as glass. We skated for hours watching fish swimming below us.

    Awesome video! I've done this hike, but it was in July. Lots more people on the trail that time of year. The nice thing for many people is that the parking lot is at around 10,000', so you're already up high. Very little climbing required for those amazing views. If you get a chance to go back when Gem Lake is not frozen, you'll see amazing turquoise-colored water. Little Lakes Valley has special meaning to me - My dad, who was an avid hiker and has since passed away, took me on this hike the first time I went. Lot's of wonderful memories....

    ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. Here you are again in the beauties of the Sierra, where autumn has cast its mantle of ice, dressing the vegetation in a brownish color, and draping the mountains in their snowy adornments. What a pleasure to see ELISE training for the Winter Ice Skating Games. If he doesn't win an Olympic medal, ELISE will undoubtedly win the medal of grace, and his songs with timeless lyrics will enchant the jurors, who will not remain unmoved. ADAM you fell into ELISE's trap, your famous "pop tarts" have been replaced by another brand... It's another great video that makes you dream. Kisses to both of you. DAN
    ELISE et ADAM un bonjour de France. Quel plaisir de voir ELISE s’entrainer pour les jeux d’hiver de patins sur glace. Faute d’obtenir une médaille olympique, ELISE obtiendra sans aucun doute celle de la grâce, et ses chansons aux paroles hors du temps enchanteront les jurés qui ne resteront pas insensibles. I am not surprised to see all of the lakes covered in thick ice, such you can skate on them already in mid-November. I was once in this area in the middle of summer (end of July 2012), and we saw and walked through some snow patches (around the lakes, not in the mountains)! And they were sizable (at least 10 meters wide). So, that was a revelation for me, as at that moment I only knew California weather that you see in LA...

    Ruby lake just north of that valley is all time worldclass! Try it next time if you already haven't done it..also Bear Creek Spire at the end of Little Lakes trail is one of the best climbs anywhere on the planet...but yes not a true hike or scramble--5th class but some of the best granite in the backcountry Sierra. Late autumn hikes in the Sierra are second to none. I'm really surprised you two didn't bring microspikes. Easy on off when the terrain advises.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  7 місяців тому +1

      Oh heck yes, Joseph! Bear Creek Spire next time for sure -- great recommendation!!! Ya we honestly didn't realize it was going to be this icy or we would have brought some spikes. Also, we probably over-focused on the icy parts in the video because they were cool-looking, but 98% of the trail was not icy like that so the lack of spikes wasn't too much of an issue. What a lovely hike and with ice and snow already! Here where I live (Denmark), climate change has meant that you can now pretty much go a whole winter without much frost or snow or many of those clear, crisp, pristine days. When I first moved here, you could skate on the lakes in winter. ❤

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  7 місяців тому +1

      Catherine that is amazing -- we both assumed Denmark would be all ice and snow in the winter! I guess that is because, in addition to climate change, there are no high-altitude places? One of the things that always amazes us about California is that it can be 75 Fahrenheit in one part of the state, like Death Valley, and well below freezing in another part less than 100 miles away, like the Sierra, because of all the altitude variation. We need to get some skates! ❤️

    • @catherinewatson5519
      @catherinewatson5519 7 місяців тому +1

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard Yes, the different climate zones in California must be fantastic to experience. And I think you guys should definitely get skates. I had only ever skated on an indoor rink before I moved to Denmark and there is something amazing about skating outdoors - even if you're only basic-level like me, you're still going a bit faster than regular walking/running and feeling the gliding motion and the wind in your face and hair is exhilarating and liberating. But over the last decade or more, it just hasn't really been a winter experience you can necessarily expect to have any longer. You're right about Denmark, there is no high altitude at all, it is pretty far south in relation to the rest of Scandinavia, and is influenced by the Gulf Stream, so when you factor in climate change, everything has got much milder. Having said that, I'm looking out of my window at 8am and can see that we have had one of the first night frosts of the year, so you never know....

    Crispy morning it sure is.. -8C with northern wind. Though I love to wear shorts all Year round (thicker ones in winter) I couldn't go (anymore) under 8C without knee/leg warming tights. You two had a summer kit on while it obviously was around zero celcius. Hrrr.. and second hrrr going on lake ice! For sure thin! Our seashore is getting its ice layer, but never ever gonna get on it before it's thick to carry cars weight!
    Those sounds coming from ice are cool! Also every time when find smooth, black, ice surface it just gets me too.. to make some art; throwing snow balls (and junks of snow) from high drop to the ice surface makes contemporary art by exploding snow patterns.. :D

      Haha yes! Ice and snow in a beautiful place just seems to bring out the kid in all of us. We do tend to hike in fairly light gear even in winter, because we don't like to sweat and then have the sweat get cold. But we definitely do grab layers out of our packs and put them on whenever we're taking a break or walking downhill rather than up -- or if there's a cold wind! ❤️

    Another awesome video. The sound of that ice! How I wish I could play ice hockey on one of those frozen lakes! The NHL should host one of their annual "Winter Classics" on such a lake (without thousands of attending fans). If not in the Sierras, then perhaps on Lake Louise in Banff. However, from your videos, the Sierras don't seem to pale in comparison to the beauty of the Rockies. And...no grizzlies!

    Once again you were blessed with a beautiful day to do an amazing hike. There are some awesome hikes to do in the late fall in that area. I still remember doing a hike up Duck Pass trail in the late fall. I have a picture on the wall of Skeleton Lake. Last time I went on an icy hike, almost exactly a year ago, I easily walked through an icy, steep and curvy patch. One on "safe ground" I took a step back to give room to those who were coming down on their hands and knees. As I step back, the leg that is going back slips out and I fall down. Could not stand back up and clearly something was off. Turns out that as the leg snapped back, it tore the quad tendon off my kneecap. So that put an end to my goal of running a marathon in two months, climbing Denali this year and I bunch of other ones. A year out that quad is so weak that it is a joke. Cannot run at all. Be safe out there!

      Charlie so sorry that happened to you, and all from being kind to others as well. That's just wrong! • @averywear8295
    @averywear8295 7 місяців тому +1

    Great video as always!
    Lots of moderate day hikable peaks around there- Mount Morgan has incredible views of the Valley, Pyramid Peak unique views of lakes to the east, Bear Creek Spire also great views and potentially a thrilling class 3-4 scramble up the north ridge (I unfortunately did the tedious class 4 scramble on the Ulrich's route).
    The hike to Mono Pass is awesome, and you can easily add Mono Pass Peak and/or Mount Starr, both of which add different lakes and drainages to the stellar views.
    Most underrated peak in the area- Mount Stanford, best accessed from the Hilton Lakes. Get to the summit before noon so that the sun illuminates the red wall from Red and White Mountain to Mount Morrison. Pioneer Basin from there is about as photogenic as it gets.
    Also, have you guys hiked up Pine Creek, McGee Creek, and Convict Canyon? IMO each one is just as awesome as Rock Creek. Mount Morrison has fab views, as do both Red Slate and Red and White.
    For a non-peak hike, and one I think you guys would really eat up, you could go up Pine Creek and loop the Royce Lakes, using Coco Col on the way up and Pine Creek Pass on the way back. Royce and Merriam would be the optional peaks to make a more demanding but still doable day.
    I'm always so excited to see your videos, either to see some new place or to re-live past glories.

    Hub of the area. June Lake the town is accessible from 395 too. I stick low in winter. Lone Pine Death Valley.
    I like onion Valley best for winter BUT Whitney is shorter approach once roads close.
    Kearsarge in heavier snow is easier trek up to pass. And you can drop down to Kearsarge Lake.

      Haha yes it really was quite delicious. However, the main reason I usually bring pop tarts is that they give such quick and easy glycogen for energy, and protein pop tarts, while healthier, have a lot less glycogen. 4 LA Folks. Winter. Hiking. You can get to Moab from California City in less than 10 hours, the speed limit in Utah is 75-80, and Getting to and through Vegas is first 4.5 to 5 hours. You leave at 2am. Once past there you can generally motor. Mountain pass before Richland slows you down. Weather can be a problem in the winter. In the Sierra Nevada, the trails are not visible in real snow. Another reason to go to Kearsarge. Easier winter Navigation. Camping.
    In Saint George Utah, you have the Zion (53 miles from SG)/Snow Canyon/North Rim option (not in winter/141 miles from town). You can do Bryce (roads closed in the winter) to Moab via the back way, THERE IS A PASS AT THE HENRY MOUNTAINS AREA-SNOW ISSUE. I jump back on I70 instead of going in the south way into Moab, after/at Hanksville. Weather is an issue heat or cold/snow. In Moab, you can drive up to the La Sals in 4x4 in the winter, through the giant Aspen Forest. (Big Parking lot pull out for winter folks). I try to hit Moab on 4 day weekends. Zion on 3-day weekends. Gold Basin is where you want to go.
    I prefer the Sierras.
    Taboose Pass is a true pass but has a long approach. It is hard to get high, and the crags are not user-friendly for ascent. A different hike for spring. Mono Pass is PACKED, I could not believe how many people were there in 2023 from 2010. It was too much for me. Easy hike to pass is why and gorgeous river/lakes. Road access. The last 1.5 miles were parked cars. Reno and Carson Folks are coming now via Lee Vining. Big time. So Mammoth is packed out. July August. I leave Washington on Juneteenth and go straight to Lake Mary. Little Kids hate no internet and backcountry camping and 6-mile hikes with a pack.
    Travel from LA is either or. You can get to Sequoia also but it is a one-lane long road up to Moro Rock and in winter the time you want to go hiking in the snow through big trees. Sequoia is a choke point type deal. I go to 100 Giants via Walker Pass (the road is closed all winter). Sequoia is more expensive and remote. The East Sierra has Whitney/Movie Road/Lone Pine/Independence/Big Pine/Manzanar/Bristlecones/Death Valley/white mountain/paved roads up Kearsarge/cottonwood/Mammoth/June Lake/Convict Lake/Mono Lake (mono from Tom's not Yosemite).
    Whitney is the King of winter hikes. Once you know the trail and is easy to get to. I do Kearsarge because it has five sidebars. Robinson Lake. Golden Trout Lake. Matlock Lake. Mount Gould. University. Kearsarge. Dragon but I go Gould. The campground at Independence now Inyo County run and Mount Williamson Hotel are right there. Mammoth is a haul from LA. You can drive to Saint George Utah in about the same effort. THE PROBLEM IS VEGAS TRAFFIC ON SUNDAY. IT IS FUBAR. I LITERALLY DROVE HOME THROUGH DEATH VALLEY INSTEAD.
    Winter hiking takes gear. Buy it. Always take crampons! And mole skin for blisters put it on your heel/achilles before starting. If you have never worn crampons with mountaineering boots before. Wear minimal clothes you will be sweating to death. TAKE SUN BLOCK SPF 2000!

      Man that is a wealth of good advice, right down to the sunscreen if you take your jacket off. Worst sunburn we ever had was a winter snowshoe!! Thinking about fitting in a Utah trip this winter. Would love to see Bryce and a few other places in the snow! ❤

      No, we ended up just outside the gate by the Didn't need much more than covered boot spikes and an ice axe (there were two sketchy sections where avs hit earlier in the season) but it was great. 70s and snow and sunburn. Needed some glissading to get both up and down. Definitely found folks getting all the way up to mono pass though!

    I am a fan of brown sugar pop tarts, fugly or not. With so many icy plunge options I need to know at what ambient temperature do you pass on the plunge? I certainly would not jump in if there is ice forming, but you guys are a different breed. Really enjoyed that one.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  7 місяців тому

      That is a great question, and in truth there is no hard temperature limit. In fact, we both had our swimsuits packed and were planning to jump into Gem Lake on this one if there had been a patch of unfrozen water, but the ice was just too thick! ❤️

      Haha yes it really is beautiful there, and yes it is also bear country. But remember we only have black bears, not grizzlies, and the black bears are generally a lot less dangerous. We've run into a lot of them over the years, and as long as you make some noise and don't accidentally surprise a mom with her cubs, they pretty much just go on their way and let you go on your way. ❤️

      I head u to the Eastern Sierras sometimes in the early spring, and the road up Rock Creek is closed. Not sure when it gets closed. I guess it depends on how much it snows.

      Thanks! Right at Heart Lake. It was a gorgeous early Spring evening. We had first visited in the Fall and at that point it felt similar to when you were there-- the lakes were all iced up but the trail was still visible. Lots of ice skaters on the lakes. Knew we'd have to revisit in a warmer season to explore the rest of the trail that was snowed in and, of course, make it official. Ok Adam...you missed a few opportunities to score brownie points with your bride. When some hiking spot is so beaitiful, it has to be said that it doesnt quite live up to your side kick.
    And Elise...the next time you two are pirouette on a rock for a snack spot....and you call Adam a chicken foot, it MUST be said with a mouth full of pop tart in order to get the full crum spraying effect.
    I will ignorantly say that a protein pop tart soulds kind of like diet milk shakes. But...I have never had one, so wont knock them.
    On to serious stuff....whooaaa...you two hit this one out of the park....again!! It was a nice diversion from the normal cliff dangling that you two do. It reminds me of some of your other multiple lake hikes you did a year or two ago.
    I have never been to this location. But, it is truely stunning! Thank you so much for sharing it!!
    PS. I just got my supplemental tax bill for Riverside County. I am not positive that I will ever be able to afford to return to California heheheh. Joking aside, I really look forward to going to this lake series some day!!
