1) Mammoth Mountain
At 11,059 ft Mammoth mountain is the highest ski resort in California and receives a large amount of snowfall compared to other Eastern Sierra peaks. About 400” annually. The Ski resort was founded in 1953 and has been providing endless entertainment for skiers, boarders, snowmobiles, and sightseers since.
2) Rainbow Falls
Rainbow Falls is the highest waterfall on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River plunging 102 ft and eventually snaking all the way to San Francisco Bay. The falls are named for the rainbows that appear in their mist on sunny summer days.
3) Devils Postpile
Molten lava and glacial ice shaped these unusual rock columns. Basaltic lava more than 400 feet deep filled this narrow valley nearly 100,000 years ago. As the lava cooled, cracks formed on the surface to release built-up tension these cracks formed into hexagons which is one of nature's most efficient and stable shapes.
4) Lake Mary
The largest lake in the Mammoth Lakes Basin is nearly a mile long. This is a popular lake for fishing, boating and sailing is a great place to spend a hot summer day. Lake Mary Marina has boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and fishing gear rentals.
5) Backpacking/Hiking
My favorite summer activity in mammoth is backpacking with tons of epic trails and alpine lakes that you find a little solitude during sunset. A few of my favorite trails in the area are Duck Pass Trail, Thousand Island Lake, and Mammoth Crest.
6) Biking
Mammoth has loads of bike trails and paths and is extremely bike-friendly. Mammoth mt turns into a mountain biking mecca during the summer months. You can buy a lift ticket for your bike and boom down the mountain.
7) Fishing
Mammoth Lakes basin boasts 5 main lakes most of them stocked with trout! Twin Lakes is the first lake you arrive at and has the best campground in the mammoth lakes area.
8) Convict Lake
Convict lake is one of the most dramatic lakes that I’ve ever visited. Sevehah Cliff, composed of folded metamorphic rock, provides a colorful almost painted backdrop to Convict Lake.
9) Wild Willy's Hot Spring
This is by far one of the coolest things to do in the mammoth area. It’s down far down a rocky road and feels like the middle of nowhere but that’s half the point.
10) June Lake
June Lake is another picturesque lake in the area and one that probably deserves its own video. It boasts fantastic campgrounds, fishing, boating, and my favorite sunning on the beachy shores of the lake.
11) Hot Creek Geological Site
Hot Creek is like a tiny "Yellowstone" in the Mono Lakes region. There are beautiful blue hot pools and steaming water here. There is plenty of parking at the top of the canyon and a quick walk down to the creek is well worth the effort.
12) Mono Lake
Mono Lake is a salt lake that is close to the town of Lee Vining. The lack of an outlet for this lake makes this lake alkaline and helps to provide a perfect and productive habitat for brine shrimp.

13) Minaret Vista
Minaret Vista is a drive-up spot just before the entrance of Devil's post pile national monument. And is a must stop at sunrise or sunset.
14) Twin Falls Overlook
One of the most picturesque overlooks in all of Mammoth is one that you can drive up to. Twin Falls drains Lake Mamie as it tumbles into the Twin Lakes.
15) Earthquake Fault
The ripped-apart rock of the Mammoth Lakes Earthquake Fault shows off the tectonic powers of this ever-changing landscape.
16) Mammoth brewery
No trip to mammoth is complete without a trip to Mammoth Brewery. Perfect for after a day on the slopes or fresh off a backpacking trail in summer.

Over 50 years of Mammoth trips over my lifetime, I have done everything you have laid out here.
When I was a kid back in the 70s, you could walk INSIDE the Earthquake Fault, with a tour guide.
Old Mammoth Town site was pretty cool too. We found a lot of square nails there when we were kids, and I will return those nails to the visitor's site next time I go up there. I had just found them tucked away in a box, from about 45 years ago.
The ghost town of Bodie, is definitely worth the drive and about 2-3 hours there.
Mammoth Falls below Twin Lakes is also great to hang out at. But Rainbow Falls is the best.
Hiking from Agnew Meadows down to Minaret Falls and then onto Devil's Postpile is a great hike, mostly downhill, and along the Middle Fork of the San Jaquin River, and catch the bus to take you back up.
Another great hike is from Horseshoe Lake, to McCleod Lake, Mammath Pass, Twin Cinder Cones to Red's Meadow, is another mostly downhill hike, with a bus to take back up.
That is just off the top of my head...
Great video. Be careful about swimming in Lake Mary as it is part of the drinking water for the area. It is a no swimming area for Lake Mary and Twin Lakes. June Lake and Convict Lakes have great swimming areas.
Thanks, I did see that in my research
Swimming in Lake Mary is not allowed
I swam there yesterday and there are no signs saying that. I have swam there for years and never have been told not to or I can’t.
What about Bodie!! Amazing adventure for the whole family as this ghost town is full on history with acres to explore
Very Good. Our family spent vacations in Mammoth Lakes back in the early 60's, driving up from L.A. This was a walk down memory lane for me. I knew all the spots and enjoyed seeing a big part of my past in California. Thank You.
Used to live up there and dogsledding is my second favorite activity after skiing.
seriously awesome video! Thanks for making it!!!!!!

Great job on your research!
Great video! I was worried about finding the path up there so this helped a lot!
This is great guide and have tremendous information! Will visit Mammoth Mountain next winter, and this is a great addition to visit.
The Mammoth Scenic Loop is glorious in the fall
Excellent place and wonderful photography, very useful comments, thank you for sharing beautiful video 👌👌👌
thanks.. first time visiting the area.
Thanks for the videos.
Good POV shots, especially lines the lake views
Thx I like doing those fun POV shoots
Wow! Lots and lots of snow. New friend here. 😊
My playground for 3 decades thanks for your amazing video! I went down memory lane!!!
It's amazing right. You're so lucky to live there
Great video 👍. I'm only missing Wild Willy's Hot Spring. Need to check that out next time I'm there.
I would also add the hike to Inyo Craters to your list.
Thanks for the video. I've been to most of the places you mentioned. I used to live on the western side of the Sierra's and took the Tioga Pass to get to Mammoth. What a beautiful beginning to our trip.
REALLY GREAT VIDEO I BEEN TO RAINBOW FALLS AND JUNE LAKE AND HORSESHOE LAKE ALSO THE DEVILS POSTPILE
Awesome guide! I would say the Crowley Lake Columns are also worth checking out. The eroding beach of the lake reveals dozens of seeming random stone columns that you would swear must be man made, but they are a totally naturally formation!
You rock man!!. Thanks for this awesome video.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Our family has been vacationing in Mammoth for almost 40 years, you nailed it. We camp 🏕 in the Post Pile area!
Thank you for your sharing. Very useful ❤️
You’re welcome! 😊
Thank you! I’m excited for a trip there!
Hope you enjoy it!
Leaving for Mammoth Lakes in the morning. Thank you for creating this video. I am looking forward to this trip now!

You are so right I have experienced 15 of the 16 places that you showed are they are fantastic.
Which one are you missing? Hope you get to go again soon
Awesome video thanks
Great video!
Really enjoyed it Josh, thanks for all the effort you put in. I'm going to spend time, camp, bikepack around Tahoe this summer, Cheers
Takes a ton of work to do all this but your comments make all the difference. Thanks for watching!
Use to live there, it's such a beautiful mountain town! Small but beautiful. Lots of rich people live there, in the town of Mammoth Lakes.
taking a vacation on Labor Day weekend at the twin lakes campground this year. Thank you so much for this video
@Boulder Jim glad you found it useful. Twin lakes is by far my favorite campground in Mammoth. Enjoy and 🙏 for the support
Great video
I haven’t been there in 40 years as a kid I’m missing out, going this year for sure
Excellent video 👌👌
do it! let me know what your fav thing to do is when you get back!
Awesome. Thank you really appreciate it.
Glad you enjoyed it
Super amazing video!
Thank you 🙏
Awesome. ✌🏽🙌🏽🙏🌅
I worked for Mammoth Mountain 1980-83. One of the best three years of my life. I wish I had never come back to the flatlands.
So impressed with your video, I just subbed.
Thank you so much!!! hope you get to visit soon!
Great info! As a non- athletic type, a guide as to the level of huffing and puffing for the hikes would be appreciated.
There are many parking lots near to the sights. Walk along the lakes' shore. Hot Creek is a short(1/4 mile) but steep path. Remember, you're at 8000 feet(2500 meters), so you get tired quickly. Also, you can rent Electric Bicycles, if you want to ride around town, or leave the car parked.
I’ve been to a mono lake june lake convict lake and lake Mary here .. and I would say probably the easiest hike I’ve done here was convict lake loop.. it is basically flat the entire hike it just goes around the entirety of the lake about 2.3 miles i would recommend that for a simple yet enjoyable hike
Lake Crowley is cool too!
Beautiful
Beautiful lakes i love this video. 💕😊
Thanks for watching!
I like the Rainbow fall and I like Lake Mary
make sure to visit Inyo Craters off the scenic loop rode
Thanks fo the tip! I’ve booked marked it fo my next trip
Nice work. Great post.
🙏 hoping to do one in Lake Tahoe, Zion, Bryce and Arches later this year
@@Active_Tours Cool. I used to live in Mammoth, on Old Mammoth Road, with about 6 other guys in a big old house. Tennis club across the street? I slept under the dining table. They all worked ski patrol. June Lake, Twin Lakes, Convict Lake. Stunningly beautiful area, especially after new snow, about 2AM, full moon. Pure magic. Cyclist's paradise. Got u on my playlist.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
So so EXCITED! My kids & I are headed up for the first time and staying through to the 4th of July holiday. We will be staying 3-days. We don’t even know where to begin to plan our days here other than the fireworks show Sunday on Crowley Lake and Mammoth Brewery abd of course seeing beautiful Lake June! Help, pointers, tips, please, etc. . . ☺️🙏🏼
Hope you enjoy your time in mammoth! Hit up a few good hikes and relax on the lake.
This is amazing. Thank you for all the wonderful info. You have me very motivated to go to Mammoth now. I would love to see a video on the Lake Tahoe area.
Thanks @CoreyDoesIt! Your channel looks great too, cool tiny house!
Convict Lake is stunning
Great video, thank you for taking the time to makes this. I will have to visit the area.
Please do! Go explore Mammoth and tell me how you like it. Thanks for your support!
I live in mammoth it’s amazing!
Hi what is the shot walk to get to a falls? I have a 10 year old kits not sure if is long wall
@@DudenamedAlexx it’s like a4 mile walk but it doesn’t feel that long
hey thanks for the video, just simple question, can we do bbq there using charcoal grills?
Nice job...Lake Mamie (may-mee) and I'd say that since you included Mono Lake, right there is the Eastern entrance to Yosemite via highway 120 which could be your #17
Thank you for the beautiful and inspiring video. Now I'm so excited to schedule a trip there with my son. Looks like it could be so healing!
Hope you both enjoy it
@@Active_Tours thank you...
That falls is gorgeous!
Going to mammoth next month, going to try a few of these the 4 days I’ll be there !! We were going to try and do dispersed camping since all the campsites are full, have any suggestions ?
This was super helpful, thanks and keep up the great videos!
Glad it helped! Thanks for supporting!
Awesome! So much to do. Where does one begin? I’d love to go hiking but honestly never have. Where would you recommend and when’s the best time of the year to go?
Hot creek, Before 2004 you could swim there. I did that every weekend.
George Lake has a sick rock jumping spot. Probably around 10-15 feet for the thrill seekers
George lake or lake George? Lake George is the one next to Lake Mary and is way closer than George lake which is 50mi away
@@liamkuperman6760 the one close to lake mary
@@michaelblekherman6260 Head to Skelton Lake for a real jump off spot...
I’ve been wanting to go to mammoth this year. Loved the video man, keep up the good work. I just subbed and can’t wait for new videos.
@michael lee 🙏 mammoth is great you should definitely go exploring. Thx for the support I’m hoping to do video on Tahoe, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches and Moab still this year 🙌 so look for videos on that by end of year
Great video!! Please respond by naming all the lakes where you can rent a kayak so I can select the lake I most like where I will be able to do some kayaking. -Thanks!!
Jamás olvidaré esas vacaciones en mayo del 2019,en mammoth Lake
Josh thanks for making this video. What month(s) are best to do all these activities, excluding skiing.
It’s pretty great up there in the late spring and fall. Summer too but it can get hot and smoky
Thanks
I like this video
Hi. One that you missed is the Crestview rest stop.
You can get water refills and there's a bathroom. And there is also internet access believe it or not.
Another thing I like to do in Mammoth is take my Jeep around the backcountry.
And, the dispensary in town is indispensable.
Great point! I’ve spent many nights in that rest stop. Just recently on my way to Lake Tahoe
@Michael A--I like the Rest Area between Big Pine & Independence. A picnic lunch at the little creek in early summer. It's 10 degrees cooler & most don't even know it's there!
Crestview is closed in the winter.
Abc7news said mammoth is gonna get snow on cinco de mayo Saturday morning 2024 🍻
Hot spring
Yes ! My favorite too as I have 9 spinal fracture from a accident. Yes please.
Sure has changed, the 70's were great there.
Oh wow I wish I had seen it in the 70’s. Thanks for your support
duuuuuuude, if youve been to mammoth that many times and dont have Schatts bakery on your MUST see list, you arent doing Mammoth right!! LOVE all these spots, and have a long list to go to bcuz as much as I LOVE skiing and snow, my parents only took ski vacays cuz my step dad aint the camping type, so annoying! Now I want to get out and just be in a tent and find all the camping with creeks, rivers and Lakes you can swim or hike in!! Great video, but ya you HAVE to go to and add Schatts!! theres the one In Bishop too!
Get there early for the Day-Old rack.
I'm saving Schatt's for my Bishop video. I can honestly say I've never been to the one in Mammoth
The bishop one is better TBH.
Not bad video overall.
Thanks for all the detailed and informative information. We’re heading to Mammoth in two weeks and can’t wait to do some of these suggested activities you’ve shared. Just a suggestion, it would be helpful if you could make a list of all the suggested locations in order in the text description to help viewers memorize these locations. :)
Shoot, I totally meant to do this... I’m working on a Santa Barbara video this weekend so I’ll add it when get back. Here’s my blog post till then. 🙏 for your support. activetours.com/north-america/united-states/california/top-things-to-do-in-mammoth/
@ThuyNhi Hguyen added the full list to the description! Thanks again for your support!
How come you left Iva Bell Hot Springs out? That is a must see, if you can make it. Ha!
What are some great spots to visit for July? I plan on driving and spending 3-4 days in Mammoth. And what do you recommend for lodging?
Yosemite is only a 2-3 hour drive away, but $40 per car. Start early from Mammoth(7-8AM). Stop at Tuolumne(Too-all-o-me) Meadows and Olmstead Point near Tenaya(Ten-eye-ah) Lake on your way. Rainbow falls is not as great with the drought in 2022
Any off-roading trails?
Do you know the address to Rainbow Lake the 1.6 mile one? :) I've only found the one that's 6 miles round trip! Thanks so much new subscriber!!
Yes, (37.6140513, -119.0766186) is the coordinates. It’s stop 9 on the shuttle map. Enjoy!
@Andrea--Walk from and Back to Devil's Postpile parking lot(by bus or car). That's worth seeing. Then to the end(Red's Meadow), to save 3 miles.
The pack station
Hi did you this trip in one day? Im planning for a 2 days night stay. Any suggestion where to go first if im coming from LA. Thanks i like your channel.
Hey there, I made this video over 4 or 5 weekend trips to Mammoth. There’s tons to do. If you’re camping my favorite is twin lakes and if you’re Airbnbing you really cant go wrong it’s a small town and you can easily get around. Enjoy
How long were there? 1 or 2 weeks
You put mammoth brewery but don’t leave out the new Distant Brewing that’s up on Old mammoth road near vons! Lol
I’ll be up there in a few days. I’ll definitely check it out
@@Active_Tours same I’ll be there this coming sun-tue lol
Nice and Creative Videos, This is really my favorite channle.:).
I really glad to see your post and your world was so brilliant. 🌴🌴🌴
excellent and Much appreciated!!🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 from:
Mammoth Town Pinal
En qué mes puedo visitar alguien que me diga
It’s an excellent video, but it would’ve been nice if you had mentioned the lakes that are swimmable this is very important for parents that traveling with her with their kids.
Is horseshoe lake safe to swim?
Where is the best to see the fall foliage?
It's mostly Aspen. On the road to Rock Creek Lake(20 miles, half-way to Bishop). Closer to Mammoth is Convict Lake, then McGee Creek. MUST be there between 8-10AM.
Tough to predict, but mostly in October.
In general, is it crowdes in summer?
It’s busy on holidays weekends but otherwise you can find some solitude
Yea like he said really busy on holidays summer it’s packed but not to packed you know you can do you thing like mountain biking visit places go Into the lakes btw cold water.
