- The town of Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is BURIED…lasted blizzard dropped multiple feet bringing the totals to 53 FEET and counting …this video is longer then my usual but a lot happened today , including a busted snow blower, helping out a stuck mini van, and trying to navigate the now narrow roads…and of course plenty of snow

Lived in June Lake for 44 years full time,CALTRANS and the local snow removal people do a fantastic job of keeping the roads clear and open .Pure Professional crews 🇺🇸
So they do their job better then any politician does theirs. Let the road bosses mind themselves without any influence.
As a child, used to stay in a cabin there every winter in the ‘60s and go fishing. Beautiful.
My brother lives there now, the pictures he’s sending are insane!
UK got 2 inches for gods sake ! I like deep snow !
I am 74 and lived in Canada when I was very young. I saw LOTS of snow there. Then we moved to Upstate New York where I still live. And I've seen a lot of blizzards and a lot of snow here. But I have never seen anything like what you're experiencing in Mammoth Lakes. This is just epic. Compared to this our NYS winters are like Miami's. Good luck to you.
I live in Northern California closer to the sierras, and im surprised to hear you’ve never seen anything like what we’re experiencing even though you lived in canada i would think you guys experienced stuff like this every winter. Helps me realize the magnate of these snow storms
Every yr it'll get worse! Sell those houses asap
Elevation is the difference
@@Carlos-oo3ig it actually doesn’t snow that much in colder areas it just never melts. However some areas in the Canadian Rockies can get that much snow.
It's apocalyptic. Big difference.
Been a Reno/Tahoe resident since 1962. These are the kind of winters we got regularly through the 60’s and 70’s.
So glad u shared that for it fact; have photo's even frum 40-50s, 60 & 70s; snow up to eves/rooftops & snow down the mtn. by the ft.!! Phenomenal....Grands own restaurant @ Bijou & members of ski club....⛷️ Amazing lengths of skis!!!!! SIERRA NEVEDAS ROCK....
The standing snow pack in the central sierra is deeper this year than back then
Any chance you could redo your morning trip when it’s summer? I cannot conceive that there are houses and lawns under those massive dunes of snow. And I will never complain of driving my kids to the bus stop in the morning ever again.
100% the plan …one would thing I would have a picture of my house without snow but apparently I do not 🤦🏻♂️
@@LifeintheEasternSierra living in Queensland it’s hard for me to believe this can even happen. It looks like a lot of fun to me 🤣🤣.
Not so much fun anymore.
For those who think the berms of snow left behind from the plows is a bad thing, if they don’t clear the roads you couldn’t drive in 5,7 even 10 feet of snow on the road, we’d be completely stranded, most cars and trucks can’t push thru that much snow let along 2-3 feet. Thank you to the road crews

As a kid in Jersey my uncle demonstrated how to get the snow off the roof without going up on the roof. 1. 200 feet of yellow nylon rope. 2. A weight to tie on the end. Those the weighted rope over the roof and drags I’d under the snow creating an aided avalanche. It is easer with a friend.
I did that last year …worked like a charm in small sections and only with a foot or two of snow …this is slightly different 😂…my friends and family back in Philly can’t wrap their heads around this much snow
As someone who plows for a living I’m exhausted just looking at it! I don’t know how the DPW workers are doing it?
A snow rake works pretty good to ( can get one EARLY in the fall at hardware store)
🛐Beware of these scam insurances Farmers/Foremost Don’t pay on a claim for This kind of Damage to your property! 🙏🏼😇✝️🤲
I saw people clearing snow off a roof similar to that at Mammoth this week. They did have one guy on the roof, well back from the edge, and they pulled a rope through the snow, held by other people on the ground making the overhanging snow fall off.
I'm actually impressed by how quickly they get the roads open/how much they keep them open. The frequent, large snows have to be insane to keep up with. Really enjoy the videos, thank you.
Not here 5 hrs south of mammoth. Crestline/ arrowhead a lot of the streets here haven’t been plowed at all .
Diesel will do that...🤔
The trick is proper equipment, great operators and once it's starts snowing, you start pushing or blowing. Just keep up with it.
@@davestevens4263 caltrans in socal really dropped the ball. very disappointed in them
unlike Southern CA, we get a lot of snow up here every year in Tahoe/Truckee which warrants quick clean-up. So we got the resources. Southern CA rarely see storms of this magnitude and everyone from the residents to Caltrans underestimated that.
Glad to see you clear snow from the top of your rig before driving it. I've seen way too many people just drive off with a ton of snow on the vehicle and it falls off onto either the road or any vehicles behind it.
Safe to say you guys will have plenty of water in the mountains for the summer!
Great video, thank you, & be safe up there!
Always fill your fuel tank up completely when snow is expected. The added weight helps with traction as does lowering the air pressure in your tires.
Adding weight to the vehicle increases the vehicle pressure (weight per area) on the ground. Lowering pressure in the tires increases the footprint which decreases the vehicle psi on the ground. They counteract each other. On packed snow roads you want the vehicle pressure on the ground as high as possible (ie. snow chains). On unpacked snow where you want to float on top you want to decrease your vehicle pressure on the ground.
@@jskow1208 Most are on noseason tires and the rest are on M/S tires which are equally useless, there is nothing better than dedicated high quality winter tires, and good chains when required. Smaller and narrower fitment works best, been running that for 45 years. Cheers
@@jeffjansen582 "Smaller and narrower fitment works best." I couldn't agree more. I try to buy the skinniest tire I can find and then chain-up when required. I live in an area that averages more than 300" per year.
@@jeffjansen582 They need to get rid of the "M/S" symbol. Too many people think they can use those in the snow.
@@jeffjansen582 Literally nobody uses chains in Colorado.
I always laugh when people ask why there are so many 4x4 pickups in California
I feel for you. Especially when you get done with the driveway, & you look back proudly at how nice it looks, & by golly george there comes the plow truck & leaves that wall of icy snow at the end of your driveway. As dead tired as you are, you go clear it again. This is my 1st year to say I don't miss it. I don't care if I never see another flake ever again. I'm in Southwestern Virginia. Good to see the blue sky peeking out from behind the gray clouds. Now, it has to melt. Your yard will be soggy. Thank you for sharing what life is like in your neck of the woods. Have a good day.
I’m in Columbus Ohio. We just had our first February in recorded history with zero snow and mammoth is setting the opposite records. Very Weird weather.
Wow I'm astonished 😯 I lived through the blizzard of 1978 in Massachusetts. Was not as bad as this for sure !!!! I was 18 ,we the teens lol took toboggans to the store for our neighbors it was fun 😊
Hey I lived in Lynn Ma. and lost my MG in 78 in a mall parking lot for a wk 😂😂
I was there too. 3 days of Snow!
CA motor vehicle law gives right of way to the vehicle going uphill, not the vehicle going downhill.
Great video thank you
In 1986 I was in the Coast Guard stationed at Valdez, AZ with my two boys and it was nine feet on the level. That's what the coast guard would say, so how many feet is that on the level? I'm old now, don't even drive or own a vehicle. But I live in the snow country & will always love it over always sunny & hot. Great video, loved getting to go for a drive & I am still in my warm bed with a cup of a hot favorite drink. Love the sound of a good running engine and the sound of the man's calm voice, only saying the necessary so others can learn from his video as well. Wonderful, just me & my dog, in the snow country. Everything beautiful, in a peaceful state of rest. Birds sleeping. I think I'll just keep this video & enjoy it on a very hot day. Snow & a snow cone. I play a monthly board game with my kids, been playing Risk with the older ones & Life with the others. Just you, the family, warmth & nature! A great winter. Blessed be the tie that binds. God bless us all, each & every one. Sun's out. xoxo
Amazing how much snow ❄️ you guys have. Take care, Mike
Thank you for this! I worked at Mammoth Mountain Inn in 1968 and 1971, '68 being a big snow year. I can so relate. We were snowed in for 10 days, guests followed snow cats down the hill before it got too hard to get them out. Cars crushed under weight of high snow like you show. Mammoth Lakes then was one stop light (I think), a little village which is what we called it, "The Village".
We lived in Mammoth in 68, when we got no snow during the usual months. We were out to dinner with several friends, not knowing we were just about snowed in!! It was January 69. It was eventually declared a Disaster Area. We had a new baby, in the day of cloth diapers. And absolutely had to move to Bishop, where they had more laundry mats!
Wow, that's some deep snow. It's really beautiful. Thanks for the video.
The view is just spectacular, once the storm rolls out and the sun reappears to kiss your face, just beautifully captured!!!
Whoa, that’s happened I think back in the late 1989’s when I was living in the foothills of Mt Baldy, Cucamonga. 🙂
Don’t overexert trying to remove snow though. Take it slow and easy if you can. What a blizzard to remember
You all are in my thoughts and prayers 🙏
Thank you for this video... I know, it's a huge amount of work to deal with this... Glad that you have the ability to do all this work, have to make a trip or two, and then still have enough strength to come back safely and be with your family... I hope and pray that you guys and all the rest of the people up there will be safe and warm.. God Bless you and yours.. With Love, Fran Danco
Wow! I’m in Wisconsin and we understand snow. I cannot begin to imagine the work load he has ahead of him! Good luck out there!😊
Thank you for this footage - stay safe
Thank you for this nice bit of local colour. I've been following all the posts at Live Storms Media, but they generally focus on major routes. Where I live, in southwestern Ontario, Canada, we got about half that amount over 3 days at Christmas. 😝😬 Then it all melted the first week of January. 😲😂 So much for our snowmageddon. 🙄 I hope all this snow translates into more water for all of you later this year. Take care. 😊🤗💛👍
This amount of snow is how it used to be up in the mountains. This used to be a normal amount of snowfall to get a good pack in the mountains to provide water for the rivers and lakes throughout the summer.
No this happens only once every 10-20 years
@@Sshooter444 YES......depends on where in Cascades & Sierras!!!!!!!🤣
Snows a lot every year. In San Bernardino mountais not a lot like this winter. But in the sierra and Cascades fir sure even when the winter is bad, snows a lot
Still normal. This isn’t the first storm like this this season.
I am glad that we have statistics to prove this statement false. Snowpack levels are over 200% of the 30 year median. So this is double what the normal snowpack was even 30 years ago. Yay math and science.
Thanks for the vid.Nice to see my ol home
No mistaking the sound of a whistling diesel. You can definitely tell the difference in snow depths from in town to the mountain lodge.I was thinking if you had an old wire coat hanger and cutting a piece off might’ve fit through that hole on the snowblower.Great video Thanks!!
Wire Coathanger and pliers. Put it through and twist the ends.
Great video, thank you for posting the information, very helpful
That snow depth is unbelievable!!!!! Stay safe. The most snow I've experienced was in Spokane Washington, back in 94, snow drifts about 5 to 7 ft. But that was nothing compared to this.
Awesome video. Thank you for sharing.
Not so Fun fact: People who don't live in snowy areas aren't really aware of just how heavy snow is and how dangerous it is to allow snow accumulation on the roofs of dwellings.
Simple rule of thumb, snow to water ratio is usually 10 to 1(for freshly fallen snow in moderately cold temps).
This means 10 inches of snow = 1 inch of water. Not too bad right? 10 feet of snow = 1 foot of water depth.
1 cu. ft of water weighs 62 lbs. so now think about it, each square foot with 1 foot deep of water or 10 feet of snow has a pressure of 62 lbs on it.
Think about a roof with 1000 sq. ft covering a typical home, or 62,000 lbs of pressure from 10 feet of snow on top, now think about how they build homes and buildings in the mountains.
In these vids you see snow drifts 30 feet thick, now ploughed snow is usually much denser but under each of those drifts the pressure on the ground in around 180 lbs per sq. foot, if you ever got buried in it you ain't getting out without help.
This much snow isn't fun and games any longer, it's life and death, especially with avalanches with such high amounts of snow in a short period of time.
There are people over at Donner Pass that have 9 feet of snow on their roofs. Think how heavy that is
@@bigdog5217 Not surprised at all in those mountains. You still hear about roof collapses and deaths in these winter storms because people simply don’t think about how much weight is actually over their heads and don’t clear their roofs as needed.
When you look at those old houses with wet and dry rot, owners never there, should take care of a few of them for new construction.
A good argument for high-angle steel roofing ;-)
I’m so jealous of the people going up the gondolla. Going to be a great day of riding!
Gm Keurig guy,👍 thats alot of Snow. Does your daughter need daycare that bad 🤣
That is some amazing footage. Thanks for doing that! We're hoping to hike the John Muir Trail this summer, but it doesn't look promising. Stay safe.
When we lived at Tahoe, one year it snowed 6 feet just in 1 storm! It's called the Sierra Nevada (Great Snowy Range) for a reaason.
Thank you for your video.
I used to live up near Bridgeport.
A lot more people in the area now.
Be careful and be safe.
I live in Arizona ,we got 3 inches of snow last night,I just can't get over how beautiful it is
This is what you call too much of a good thing. I love snow, I used to live in SL Tahoe, but what you were dealing with was insane. Thank you for documenting this for us.
So says it's 53 feet on the level. Last I did was 09 feet on the level in Valdez AK, in 1983 Beautiful at canyon lodge. What you can see of it. Wonderful video. Jeanie Hill.
Thank you for sharing. Be safe. I just subscribed.
THE diesel sounds awesome . !!!! boy u r gettting hammered over there .. i am from up here in lake effect snow area . near lake erie . ! we have not had much up here. near BUFFALO NY . I am near DUNKIRK NY . next to lake erie . i am a little south west of buffalo . about 40 miles
Glorious…..I do miss living in my old home state where this was a yearly occurrence (at least where i lived)!
At 5:47, you mentioned that downhill traffic has the right of way. I'd like to politely mention that you are wrong about that. UPhill traffic has the right of way because the driver facing downhill has better control of the car; thus, it's easier for him/her to reverse and get out of the way. Great video.
I live in SoCal - I've never seen such amount of snow, ever, in NoCal like this - Unrreal landscapes - Lakes Mammoth looks like a surrealistic scene with houses buried under amazing amount of snow - Breathtaking spectacle!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crazy! Excessive snow but it's sure pretty there. I haven't seen snow like that around here 🇨🇦 since I was a kid.
Great vid, thx
Love for you to do a remake in the summer and take the same path for perspective. Stay safe.
You must have the North American record for snowfall this year. I'm in BC, Canada and we certainly haven't been dumped on like you guys. I feel your pain, believe me. Good luck!
Crazy Video, man!! I used to live there, used to drive the bus for MMSA. I'm too old for it now, but insane to see all that snow. Maintenance guy (friend) is snowed in up in Bodie, too!
Unreal. I live in Wisconsin and have seen some deep snow, but nothing like what you've got. Hope you get the snow off your roof soon so it doesn't collapse. Stay safe.
March is certainly going to be a big ski season there with all the projected snowfall yet to come on top of what is already there!
Well done indeed, I love Mammoth Lakes in winter and summer....TY
Wow! Just Wow! Definitely looks like a winter wonderland from afar... However, I've shoveled plenty of snow in the N.E. and the novelty wears off fairly quickly once you have to deal with it. I don't think I've ever seen (personally) that much / thickness of snow on your roof. Jeeezus... I can only imagine how much that weighs.. I bet if you shot a video of the removal it might go viral... I've seen plenty of videos that have, and I don't recall seeing any of them as thick as your roof...
It’s beautiful ❄️ hopefully this will help the draught situation. Stay home, stay safe and stay warm.
I was there 50 years ago for the last big one, I lived in the Knolls and I had to dig down 2 stories to find our front porch (thanks Dad) best part though was the school was totally closed for weeks and that was great...amazing its been that long since a tremendous blizzard
You have cured me of my naive notions about how beautiful it would be to live in Mammoth Lakes. Well, it is beautiful, but I think I'll stick to being a visitor when I can actually see the road surface.
Yep! I’ll be stay in the low land of the Cucamongas! 😂
I don't know if I should bad or jealous. Lol. I'm on the east coast and we have had our worst winter to date with only 17" of natural snow all season. I would give anything to take some that off your hands. We've had a few blizzards over the years and know the work that goes into the cleanup, but nothing like what you are experiencing. Good luck out there and stay safe.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I wonder how late into spring you'll get before you see the grass again.
Spring 2024 😂
We lived in Mammoth in 1968 when we got no snow when winter hit. Thanksgiving and no snow. Christmas and no snow. My husband and I were out to dinner in January, 69 and unbeknownst to us, it had been snowing the whole time and now our car was half way buried in the snow!! We lived close so had fun walking home in it. Our friends were not as fortunate though. But it snowed for days, and eventually declared a Disaster Area. We had a new baby in the day of cloth diapers. We moved to Bishop, where I could get to the laundrymat. I've never liked that kinda snow since.😬😁
Looks wonderful.
I grew up in Maine.Never had to dig out of THAT much snow though.
So beautiful. I went skiing there, but there wasn't this much snow.
Man. That's a lot of snow. I'm in the Tahoe area. Still getting slammed not as bad as north lake. Good luck and it's almost spring! Crazy!!!
I really love all your happy brilliant amazing beautiful pines around long before we were born im so glad they are looking okay :D
I like the perspective from the front-end mounted GoPro. That's how I do my driving videos. It would be neat to see the same drive after the snow is gone to see the difference for those of us who don't live there. I've only been to Mammoth twice. 87 and 89.
I really miss our big snow . It has been years since . . But recently .. Orchard Park.ny
Just out side of Buffalo .ny had

This snow reminds me of the Spring of 1995. We did a ski camping trip starting from Mammoth Lakes in April around the 10th. Drove up to the lakes and looked for somewhere to park, found a charming place called the Tamarack Lodge and walked in, "we are going into the mountains and need to park the car, do you know where we can do that?" "Sure, just leave us the keys we will take care of it for you." "We aren't staying here though? "It's ok. So you are setting off now?" (It was 10 PM). "Yes." So we parked where they told us--after we unloaded the GTI with all our gear. I took the keys in and I saw a guy sitting by the fire exchange a glance with the clerk--hahaha that "oh boy expect we see them in a few hours" kind of glance.
IT was EPIC. Skiing up the steep terrain in the starlight, we passed over these tiny little triangular huts about 3 feet tall--and realized peering in that they were the peaks of A-frame houses!
Fantastic 4 nights out in the back country, down near Devils Postpile and around and back, past Crystal Crag (what a beautiful mountain.). I swear I saw Glen Plake on the backside of Mammoth in the morning from our tent after awakening to the sound of 105s.
After the trip we went hot springing, then back to San Diego and body surfed, rollerbladed and watched the America's Cup boats coming and going. The night we got back to 'dago it had snowed all the way down to 3000 feet down there!
I have a huge soft spot for that part of the world ever since.
That sounds like a super fun experience!

If two vehicles meet on a steep, narrow road and neither vehicle can pass, the vehicle facing uphill has the right of way. The vehicle facing downhill should back up until the vehicle driving uphill can pass.
Yep!
Always remember; it’s too risky to BACK DOWN a hill, things can go wrong fast.
