Ok i HAVE to tell this little anecdote. I went and saw The Lorax in theaters when it came out. I bought a bottle of soda and wanted to dispose of the empty container after drinking it. I looked around for a recycling bin and couldn't find one so I asked someone who was sweeping up. He told me the had put the bin away so they could put up the display for The Lorax and that I would have to just put it in the garbage. Does anyone else see the irony of this?

Biggering is the best song from the Lorax and it isn’t even in the Lorax.
And the reason, is that it describes perfectly what the producers are.

Well let’s be fair the putting that dark song into a very shallow and safe movie would not make sense you can’t have that song where we literally says “who cares if some things are dying?” and than the very next scene is him staring in shock at what he has done.

The problem with Dr. Seus books is that they are too short to work in film. The reason Horton hears a Who workers so well is because the story is light hearted enough to work as a comedy, kinda? With the Grinch and the Lorax that's MUCH HARDER!!!!!!!!

Here's a fun fact, recently released was a deleted song from the movie that would've helped the message better. It's called, "biggering." It was the demo for, "How Bad Can I Be?"
It shows greed slowly consuming the Onceler, rather than him being manipulated by his family, and it captures the emotion the story had. It's longer than the other song, is a rock song, and includes one or two lines from the original animated Lorax and even makes lines from the other song work better.
Amazing how one song can help a films message, and it's replaced with the more dumb downed version.

This hurts even more when you see the concept art and original material. It was meant to be a much darker movie more akin to the old 2d animated movie, with a badass rock opera villain song.
And Illumination, in all their infinite wisdom, played the 'It's too dark for kids' card.

Ironically, saying that making the movie dark would be “too much for kids” is literally just bullshit. Kids absolutely love horror and dark themes, just look at the history of fnaf or undertale both games with heavily detailed lore and violent stories that would already be disturbing to an adult. Kids can handle dark themes, but illumination can’t

I think The Lorax is my favorite Nostalgia Critic video.
    1) The core review is just really good.
    2) I like the sketches well enough, but I really love it when the sketches are part of the review itself. Nearly all of the sketches in this video are necessary for the overall review.
    3) I like a plain old funny review, but I also love it when Doug has a message to put across.
The Lorax video combines all of these very well.

  • @PB-gy9ru
    @PB-gy9ru 7 років тому +148

How that could've made the movie more timeless:
    1. Cut out O'Hare and the Corporate bad guy plot.
    2. Keep "Let it Grow" and "How Bad can I Possibly Be", but cut out the rest of the pop songs, and instead substitute the blanks with the songs from the original 1970's film, like "For he's a Jolly good Onceler."
    3. Make the story about Ted, the boy, living in this dystopian wasteland, polluted by smog. He sees theses old paintings and images of trees carved in ruins, and that's what sparks his interest. Audrey can be just be like, a classmate.
    4. Cut out the Pop Culture Jokes.
    5. Change the Onceler's personality, make him someone who wants to make money because he had a poor childhood, and thus wants more out of his life, and make a name for himself, but gets a little carried away with his Productivity.
And 6. Leave the Ending Ambiguous. Like in the book.

I actually feel really bad for Audrey when O'Hare paints over her art and calls it his own. As an artist myself, that is not only vandalism, it's also really crushing to see your artwork that you put so much time and effort into, just completely painted over, and you can't see the same picture again (unless you have different copies, or if you took a picture of it, or if it's digital art and it's saved onto your device). In this case, it was traditional art that she likely never took a picture of (as it was unfinished), and only has that one copy of it.

One) It’s a cautionary tale done completely wrong. The whole point is to say, “If you aren’t careful, this could happen to you” Teo) Pop culture references done in very small amounts are ok as long as it fits the tone of the movie. Trying too hard to appeal to today’s crowds by having them spout pop cultures references constantly is cancer, and dates your movie faster than anything. Be a trendsetter, not a trend follower. That’s how you become timeless. Three) All the executive and corporate mandates that went into this to make it “profitable” WEAKENS the intended message.

He should have started as a Sith. The character of Anakin that Obi-Wan discusses with Luke in Episodes IV-VI has never been seen on film, except perhaps in the Clone Wars series.

I agree that Once-ler's moral downfall could have been executed better rather than just one song or show how it was his decision etc, but I think that giving him face and more character pre-thneed-fever was a good idea

Illumination: At first I didn't realize
    I needed all this stuff,
    I had a little cottage,
    And that cottage was enough
A place where I could sit and knit,
A place where I could sell my Thneeds,
But now I've had a little time
    To re-assess my needs
And I need a bigger office,
    I need a bigger chair.
A bigger desk, a bigger staff,
    A bigger hat to wear
    Because I'm biggering,
    I'm figuring I'm biggering,
    And biggering is triggering
    More biggering
Nostalgia Critic: Hey, listen up, meathead.
I'm going to say this once, and I'm not gonna repeat it.
Greed... ya see, it's like a little pet, alright?
And the more and more and more that you go and feed it,
    The more hungry it'll get!
But... you know, you really can't blame greed
    No, that's stupid.
You see, it's gotta worm inside.
    Oh yeah, that's right.
It's one that always needs to feed,
    And it is never satisfied.
    You get it?
But the more you try to find it,
The more it likes to hide.
Now listen--that is NASTY little worm.
And I like to call it "pride."
See, now that's why you're biggering!
    Listen here, idiot!
    I'm figuring on biggering!
But that biggering's just triggering more biggering!
    Got that? Alright!
Illumination: There is a principle of nature,
    That most every creature knows,
It's called survival of the fittest,
And this is how it goes
The animal that wins has got to
    Claw and kick and punch.
    The animal that doesn't
    Winds up someone else's lunch
    A company's an animal,
    That's trying to survive,
    It's struggling, and fighting,
    Just to keep itself alive
    I must keep biggering,
    I'm figuring I'm biggering,
Though biggering is triggering more biggering.
    I won't stop!
    Biggering,
    I'm figuring I'm biggering,
And biggering is triggering more biggering
    And the customers are buying,
    And the money multiplying
    And the PR people lying
    And the lawyers are denying,
Who cares if some things are dying?
I don't wanna hear your crying!
    This is all so gratifying...

Turns out there was a song for The Once-ler that was much better at showing his evil side. It was called Biggering, and was the original How Bad Can I Be. It was much more slow, and had the Once-ler admit he never needed to be big, he just needed a cottage and he’d be fine, but he wants bigger thing. It also has a Lorax solo moment where he explains greed and pride. The reason it wasn’t shown in the movie was because children would be to scared by it...
Oh who are they kidding, it hit too close to home.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on original plans for The Lorax that were scrapped due to corporate interference. The demo tracks from the soundtrack flesh out the characters a lot more for just the few extra minutes they give. For instance, Ted was originally supposed to be obsessed with getting a new product called a "whosit" and Thneedville was supposed to be much more obviously dystopian. I think it would be awesome to have a sort of mini-fanscription or even just a short editorial on what The Lorax COULD have been but sadly wasn't.

After seeing Joshscorcher’s recent Top 10 Non-Disney Villain Songs, I found out that there was going to be a song that had the Once-Ler in a more tragic light, talking about what he’s doing is wrong yet still does it anyway. It was in the style of a rock opera which definitely would’ve kind of improved this movie’s message while being in the same spirit and ambiguity of the original cartoon and book. Unfortunately, this is Illumination we’re talking about, which being known for being greedy and sugarcoating anything, removed it and replaced it with “How Bad Can I Be?”. Irony is such an understatement there. 🤦‍♀️ Strangely, the unused song is on the official soundtrack for some reason.

Thinking back to when I watched the animated book movie in elementary school I remembered feeling bad for some reason. Reflecting on that emotion, I realized it was fear. I was scared that the Lorax's world could happen, so much that I avoided watching the short again or reading the book. When this movie came out, I remembered that feeling but watched the movie anyways. I felt nothing watching it. It was a meh movie. The original Lorax short honestly made me scared for the future and made me want to do my part to avoid getting to that point. The movie, made me read the book and embrace that bad feeling I tried to avoid.

I remember absolutely adoring this movie when it came out in 2012. There was very little I didn't like about it in fact. But after seeing this review, I can see EXACTLY what was wrong with it. I can never fully hate this movie because of how much I originally enjoyed it, and there were parts of the movie I still like, but it's still a pale comparison to the book and the 1972 animation, especially in terms of the message. It seemed like the film had good intentions, but it was all executed very poorly and made for a mediocre film. If I ever have children I'll be showing them the book and the 1972 film first before the 2012 movie. I also have mixed feelings about the ending with the trees growing again. I actually really loved this part originally and nearly shed a tear because of how sweet it was when I first saw the film, and it provided a sort of closure that the book never had that I strongly desired as a kid, but I agree the message is more powerful on the choice of whether to bring back the trees or not. All in all, the end of the film is a mixed blessing for me.

I think I could make a better lorax movie.
The kid who sees the onceler for the first 20 minutes, is established to live in a post apocalyptic world where he lives in a small settlement with his family, who are struggling to get oxygen and are forced to use oxygen tanks sparingly. The kid hearing a tale from his grandma, goes to venture the wasteland to find the onceler, and hears his story. The oncelers face is hidden behind the environment and like the first movie, shows his start, him making his company, his dilemmas, and all the trees being cut down. Then at the end, the kid tells the onceler about the situation with the world, asks him if he can do anything about it, and the onceler gives him a BAG of seeds. The onceler tells the kid "if you really care about the world, and want to help, plant these seeds near each other, that should be enough." The boy walks away, and as the screen fades to black, the sound of a thunderstorm is heard and as the credits roll, rain is heard throughout. At the end of the credits, it shows the boy digging a hole, taking one of the seeds out, and the camera cuts to black as he clutches the seed, and rain falls into his hand.

The boy should wear a thneed himself. because it is comfortable and useful, and it's already been made so might as well use it rather than dump it.
shows a better balanced version of the message

By the time my friend finished reading this, I had already got a girlfriend, got married, got my wisdom teeth pulled, had kids, and got a job.

      *reads second sentence*
Bullshit! Don't you realize that a post-apocalyptic environment is far too dark to feature in a kid's movie!?
      (It's sarcasm)

7:00 this scene is more deep than the entire movie.
