I'm completely new to DND. To be honest, this game drowns me in complexity on a frightening level. But I'm also fascinated by its freedom, and merciless but not necessarily fatal consequences.
I proudly managed to get off the ship with Shadowheart and Lae'zel - only to die horribly at the beach in the wrecked ship.
Your playthrough along with your little explanations is *very* helpful - and inspiring. Thank you very much!

    • @mythicdawn9574
      @mythicdawn9574 10 місяців тому +38

@@kingslaphappy1533 I'm a noob too and had to learn the hard way. If there is one thing that was not very clear despite being crucial and surprisingly not that complex once you've seen it, it's action points / spell slots. In combat, look at the small symbols right above your spells/skill bar. Those geometric shapes are your "combat money", the things you spend to use one skill or another :
      - Green dot is action point, you have only 1 per turn and it is used for almost every skill, like melee attack or spell casting.
      - Triangle is bonus action, 1 per turn, it is used for some lesser skills, usually mobility skills (jumping...), but some weapons like daggers have a lesser attack that deals less damage than a normal one but only uses bonus action, instead of the green dot normal action.
      - Purple star is a reaction point, 1 per turn, it is used rarely in lower levels but will become much more important later in the game, depending on your build. It is used for things like counterattacks, and is only triggered by enemy actions during their turns. Typical example is a level 1 spell called "shield", which activates itself if someone attacks you and will protect you from the attack, but will use your reaction point. You will recharge the reaction point next turn, but it means that after this attack, if someone else attacks you you wont be able to block because you have no reaction point left for this turn.
      - Blue squares are your spell points. Numbers available depend on class, and you will get more of them by leveling up your character, wizards typically have the most. If you have level 1 spells, each time you cast a level 1 spell it will consume a level 1 spell point (once you'll have level 2 spells, those will require level 2 spell points, and you will have less of them than lvl1 points). Those points DO NOT RECHARGE EVERY TURN ! So you have to use them wisely because what you have at the beginning of the fight is literally the number of spells you will be able to cast during the fight ! To recharge spell points, you need to take a "long rest" (camp icon at bottom right of the screen) If you don't, the game does not stop you from doing multiple fights in a row, and you can guess that later fights will become much harder as you will have already spent your spell points in previous fights...
Talking about spells ! I said each spell consumes a spell point, but it's not entirely true. During your character creation, the game lets you select "cantrips" (or in my French localization, it was named something like "minor spell"). Cantrips are very basic spells, we could say level 0 spells. Those cantrips DON'T COST ANY SPELL POINT, only an action point.
You can see which skill consumes which point by hovering the mouse over the skill, and looking at the bottom of the window. It shows you what that skill cost. Check which spell you have is a cantrip, if it looks like a spell, but there is no spell point cost, then it's a cantrip. Note that even basic stuff uses some kind of points ! Jumping, or *drinking potions* use bonus point, which means that if you already jumped in this turn, you will not be able to drink a potion !
Also, moving DOES NOT CONSUME ANY POINT, so you can move a bit, cast a spell, then move back behind a wall, for example. Moving as much as the game authorizes you will not stop you from casting a spell or melee attacks, or jumping or whatever.
Now the important part, how to use wisely all those different points ?
As you've seen, you can get killed very fast in this game. So each turn is precious. Each point you have has great value and you must use them the best you can. At the beginning of the game there is not much to do on the matter. Don't spam your lvl1 spells, try to use them wisely. If you need to attack at distance with your mage or whatever, try using cantrips, those lvl0 spells that are free of charge. Those, you can spam them as you like (for 1 action point, so you can use them every turn).
When you are leveling up, and the game lets you pick a new spell, don't forget to read what each spell costs. Some spells (shield, lvl1 spell) don't cost action point, but reaction point and a spell point. Others cost a reaction point (not many for wizards, but rangers, clerics, paladins have a few, usually these are healing, buff, or curses spells, but sometimes damage too) and a spell point.
Reaction point spells are VERY VALUABLE, because they can be cast before or after your main action (normal action point) in the same turn, basically means you do 2 things in 1 turn, very good ! Typical use (for a paladin or a cleric) would be to buff yourself with a bonus action, then melee attack the enemy, for example. So, back to leveling up, usually bonus action spells look less powerful than full action spells. If they deal damage, it's less, or their buff is weaker, etc. BUT ! As you've seen, their strength is that they do not consume an action point, so you can cast your big stuff, and this smaller one, BEFORE the enemy can do anything about it during their turn.
I think that's enough for now ^^. It's not as complex as it seems really. Look at the point system like casino tokens, make your bets and know when to fold. If you have other questions just ask. Once you have understood the basics, the strategy aspect of this game is a blast :D

Same here. In my first plathrough (currently on the third one) I played on Balanced. I explored everything because everything was so new to me. Had a ton of fun. But the fights? oh boy did I struggle. Especially the spiders in Act I took me sth. like 3 hours to successfully fight them BUT I learned a lot during those hours. And I continued to learn right up until the end of the game. My second play through as evil dark urge went way smoother and I enjoyed the game on a whole new level. Now I am playing on Tactician and it is a lot of fun! The game is suddenly really challenging for me (almost as it was in the beginning on Balanced), but now I know so much more and I am "forced" to use all of my knowledge... And I still learn something new every time I play! What a game!

I'm not a d&d fan, but watching half of this I went ahead and purchased the game. After the weekend I have to admit that this game is incredible. I love it so much. (Also I watched the rest of this video and my gameplay is completely different than ESO's, which amaze me a lot considering how scripted most of the games today.)

I also went with a vengeance paladin but with in mind to become a dark urge oathbreaker who kills mostly only bad guys from the vengeance roleplay, once a while giving in to the urge and kill a few innocents to keep lazael and astarion happy. But mostly kill etc. And then doing the [paladin] speecj once a while to remember where i came from. God im so into the game sorry 😅
