It just hit me that I never made the connection between Gay Purree and Aristocats. Thats pretty dang blatant.

I loved this movie as a kid. Judy Garland and Robert Goulet were magic.

"Gay Purr-ee" is, at its heart, an art film. There is an obvious similarity between stylized animation of this sort and an abstract painting. The realistic artist is forced to copy nature, imposing on the copy as much as possible in the way of crowd-pleasing forms and colors. But the abstract artist is free to romp with the paint to their heart's content, undeterred by popular tastes.
To put it another way, "Gay Purr-ee" is to animation what "Jabberwocky" is to poetry. Some people may quickly dismiss it as a hot mess -- the style and technique is simply not for them. Others find it delightful and a refreshing change from the usual offerings of traditional animation/poetry. I'm one of the latter people. (Oh frabjous day! Vive la Gay Purr-ee!)

So, why all the hate here for this film ... it's just a cute musical adventure (with amazing background art and a good voice cast), and yet you tear it to shreds in this review. Crazy.

I'm surprised they were able to get Judy Garland for this. From my understanding, celebrity voice acting wasn't that common back then. Or did she just do some singing?

Garland did the voice and the songs, both. Celebrity voice acting in cartoon features has been commonplace for decades.
The people behind the music and lyrics in this film had also contributed to "The Wizard of Oz" in 1939 so Judy may have found that fact to be a plus when she chose to participate in "Gay Purr-ee".

As a kid I actually preferred this movie to The Aristocats. It's a bit wild and I still love it but man does it have issues.

I watched this movie with my kids years ago. I loved the opening scene, the music and city traffic was great.

Okay guys,I watched this movie in the late 60's as a kid and was into it. It is a classic and a bit outdated but still a fun little movie. As an adult, I see the seediness of the film but I don't think it was intentional back then.

i love your review of this movie, im so glad to see it back! though it's so upsetting, i eally wanted to love this movie as i love animal stories with mature themes, but just... oof. the execution was NOT there and it's so unfortunate. i agree with another commenter, i'd love to see a remake of this movie but done right.

The amount of what I call "half lid" comments because, well "obvious" is fun in this one =3
