Hey guys! Just wanted to address your question of if the original book was about childhood innocence, as our modern cultural interpretations are, or not. The answer there is both yes, and no- it was actually written in such a way to REFUTE the popular portrayal of the innocence of childhood as this magical pure pureness. Because Peter never grows up, he never matures, never learns from his mistakes, and never really considers the consequences of his actions or how they affect other people. The idea is that yes, children are innocent, but that also means they are ignorant of morality. They do mean, cruel things without understanding why those things shouldn’t be done. So the complaint you had about Peter being a giant asshole? That’s actually the point of his character in the novel. I agree it would've worked better for the movie if they made Peter look younger, his appearance implies he should be more mature than he acts. In the novel it’s heavily implied that he kills the lost boys when they start to grow up (he mentions “thinning them out”), he was responsible for abducting Captain Hook’s crew from the real world to Neverland in the first place (so he’d have pirates to fight because Wouldn’t That Be Fun), and when the lost boys are fighting the pirates he frequently switches sides in the fight because it “makes it more interesting.” The problem is the movie tries to include all these elements, but the Disney company doesn’t want to imply negative things about the fantasy of childhood, so the message doesn’t get across. It just makes the whole tone feel confused.
All that said, I do agree the animation in the movie is great, especially Peter’s flying animation. You get the impression it’s less that he flies, and more that gravity just doesn’t work on him. His every move feels so weightless, effortless. He’s great fun to watch! And I love any scene with Captain Hook and Smee, their interactions off each other are a blast.

I'd recommend reading JM Barrie's original book. Trust me, it's one of the most clever and well-written children stories I've ever read. Even 100 years later it still holds up.
As an animation buff, I thank you for doing these reviews, but your analysis at the start really doesn't fit Barrie's original at all. And while I love some things about the Disney version (great animation, Hook, Smee) it really dumbs down the original and turns Peter Pan into a 50s American greaser instead of the lonely and tragic boy who can't grow up. Even supporting characters are dumbed down, such as George, who in the book is hilariously failing to be mature and not just angry.
The book's racial stuff is still painful, but no where near as bad as the Disney "Redman" song. Give the book a chance. It's a richer, deeper story. Barrie was an exceptional writer.

The Tinkerbell thing with emotions is in the original book and acctual a thing that all faires are supposed to have in this verse.I guess the emotion thing is supposed to explain why Tinkerbell is mostly nice when any type of Fae through most all of Europe is some variation of horrible trickster to straight up you will now die for seeing me or otherwise suffer painfully. As for Tinkerbell liking Pan I'm pretty sure that's a thing in the book? I think that's mostly Hook that showed her as any kind of a mother. From what I remember (it's been awhile) the book also doesn't show her as any kind of a mother figure she is literally the epitome of "a Fae stealing a child" a common trope through most interaction between Fae and people where a child/baby is involved, the topmost reasons for stealing children are usually explained as; fae are assholes, they wanted to raise a human baby (and you're now stuck with their child a changeling) or they fall in love with the human. Just some European things that might not be too well known :3
To me it always just made sense that Tinkerbell loved Pan and no more than that, I guess she is the only character that won't take his shit (she acts bratty about it tho, like a little kid which is a fairly common attitude for fairies) so I can see how one could see her as mother figure but that's more for a lack of anyone better (before Wendy gets pushed into it).

Best video to see pop up in my notifications in the midst of my movie work. And you are correct in mentioning that this was the last film all of Walt's Nine Old Men worked together on as directing animators, and sadly it was the last film two of the Nine Old Men's mentors worked on. Fred Moore (who is credited as character animator) originally was going to animate Smee, but he had been taken over by alcoholism so his protege Ollie Johnston did all the Smee animation, and Fred was shortly fired during production before dying in a car accident in 1952. Norm Ferguson (the tenth credited directing animator) actually got fired in the middle of production of Peter Pan not long after since he fell to the wayside in regards to drawing style, before dying of a heart attack in 1957. (Credit for this information goes to John Canemaker's book Walt Disney's Nine Old Men and the Art of Animation, a must have book in my opinion if you can find it)

Ok now knowing that Peter Pan is about dead kids, the lost boys as characters make so much more sense. I was always confused as to why they were called that. You have unknowingly answered an age old question from my childhood, thank you.

  • @eyreyereye

I agree that, were Peter designed slightly younger, it would work better. I grew up with the book and he was always supposed to be an asshole in the way that children are assholes -- he's immature by definition, never learns, is impulsive and careless. The whole set up for the story is that all children will be this way and will eventually grow up, then shows us why being stuck as a child would result in a person that might seem fun and interesting but only for a short time.
In his original appearance (which actually wasn't in the Peter and Wendy play, but a different story that Barrie wrote around the Kensington Gardens), Peter was portrayed as a child that had died and took in all other children who were abandoned by their parents, but in the play and afterward that backstory was more or less pushed to the wayside. It certainly wasn't brought up in the book, as I only found out about it when I was old enough to do some digging on my own.

I worked at Walmart when they re-re-released this film a few years back. And oh boy oh boy was it fun to be in a Midwest Walmart working when "What Makes the Red Man Red?" started to play because the bosses didn't think that'd be a little...insensitive? It also played on our televisions for months.

When I was in kindergarten we we're learning about native Americans
Someone mentioned that they were called Indians
Then me being the little impressionable 5 year old remembered that scene from Peter pan when the Indians covered there mouth and made that iconic noise
And made that noise in the middle of the class, however everyone else just stared at me.
Watching this I remembered that and cringed so hard

This is a movie that is best shown to your kids with...some disclaimers...As long as they understand that some aspects of this movie do not fly (pun not intended) in these modern times, and that they know well enough not to think of girls or Native Americans as they are portrayed here, then they can still watch this movie and love it. It's not perfect, but it's still something worth watching many times!
On a side note, I pointed out some animated featured (from earlier years that you passed) that you guys haven't covered yet last week but got no response. I've watched and reviewed all of them by now, and can provide links if you are interested. (I also provided links in my comment last week...)

I recently read the James Barri book to my daughter and then watched this movie. I think the book is far better. But there are two good things in the Disney version...Hook and Smee! Wasn't there a scene where the seagull makes her nest and lays an egg on Hook's face, and Smee thinks Hook's head is an egg and freaks 😂

Finding neverland was originally a very amazing Broadway musical about the author James Barrie who was a struggling writer who met these kids who’s mother was hiding that she was deadly ill, James makes it seem like he’s cheating on his wife (and he kinda is). James falls into a deep depression when everything goes downhill, and the anger he is feeling from all this creates Captain Hook. Throughout the play he encourages his coworkers and people around him to let loose, just have fun, and learn how to find a balance between work and being a kid again. Finding neverland is about mental health and how you can live your best life even in your darkest moments. The musical can be really happy, but it can be incredibly sad. Play is one of my favorite songs. But my favorite song is actually three songs you can play back to back. Circus of your mind, live by the hook, and stronger. It’s a really good musical. The play is better than the movie.

Peter Pan the character was far worse in the original book, he not only killed pirates, he even decapitated one of them and presents the severed head as a gift to Wendy, he also killed the Lost Boys if they seemed to be growing older than him and during battles with the pirates if he thought they had an unfair advantage he temporarily joins the pirates and kill a few Lost Boys to thin out their numbers.

Peter Pan's asshole behaviour is part of what makes Peter so unusual as a protagonist. He antagonizes Hook as much as Hook antagonizes him. If anything Hook is more relatable than Peter, we feel bad for him.

I love this! The only thing I will say is that I think it is better to view Tinkerbell as only a borderline “woman” because of her identity as a fairy. Granted, I have no idea of this was the thought in Disney’s mind, so I could be spewing randomness. I will say that the thing about being so small that she only handles one emotion is s omething from the book that is cemented as lore for their race of fairies. As for her looking in the mirror and measuring her waist, I think that is supposed to be a reference to fairies being very vain and defending of their appearance, and being obsessed with reflective surfaces.

that theory in twitter is...bullshit. There are similar stories about every show and movies, a trend from a few years back, where they suck all the magic that is happening with a "its a dream/fantasy to cope with the hard reality" and ...uh no. I have seen the peter pan one, the rugrats, adventure time, scooby doo ....you name it. I made its fun to read, but is just a fanfiction, a headcannon that in most cases do not make sense. Specially if you take in consideration that he comes, goes and interact with people outside of wonderland... Whay would they be in this analogue? resucitad childs? After several days? And how come you can die in wonderland if you are already dead? No, I really, REALLY advice you to read the original book. Its amazingly well written and will give you a better grasp of the movie and what the autor was trying to point out (from which the movie deviates from): Childhood malice and innocence. Peter Pan is never a hero, far, faaar from it. But he is an actually great example of anti-heroes characters

Until very recently I didn't know Tiger Lily had her own book and its very different from what the movie deplicts her as. In the book she is said to be very man like, was sort of a disgrace and was forced into marriage. Also in this book Peter is sort of a murderer with the lost boys through a good portion of it. Tiger Lily was supposed to be with Peter but then Wendy appeared as lowkey the entire book deplicts. This book and movie really contradict each other considering that the characters are changed but Peter is still an ass :3 In the end of the day books rule the movie adaptations uwu

Actually, even Disney had real tribal-looking Native Americans in their TV movies just a few years after Peter Pan, i.e., Nikki: Wild Dog of Who Gives a Shite (joke title, of course) and Davy Crockett, which are both strangely much more woke in this regard.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the 2000s, but when I saw this movie as a kid, I never saw how Wendy was depicted as a sexist portrayal of women - I always saw it as Wendy being the eldest child, and therefore the most mature of the bunch. It didn’t help that I was raised to believe that girls were better than boys, so I sort of projected that onto Wendy, and thought that she left *herself* out of the fun because she was too good for what those dumb stinky boys were up to.

    I always haated this movie!
Every single main male character besides Hook is either:
A little bratty toddler who thinks the whole world is a game of pretend (LOOKING AT YOU LOST BOYS)
    Or
Oh wait.. That's right. THERE'S NO VARIATION IN THE LITTLE BRATS OF THIS MOVIE! The dad is so briefly shown, so I don't count him.
Also, I hate how the female characters are handled and viewed, just because they're female.
Even when I was young, I easily picked up both the racist and sexist messages this movie was screaming at the viewers. I also hated how Peter smoked near the start of the Native American scene because I could easily tell he was at least not an adult, and so...
    Wee.
This movie is just very clearly an old one (compared to, ya know, something like Onward)
I might watch it again to see if my opinion changes. We'll see.
