It's 1927 and Prohibition is the law of the land. For Rocky, Freckle and Ivy, the night shifts are never dull.
LACKADAISY, based on a comic series by Tracy J. Butler, was directed by Fable Siegel, produced by Iron Circus Animation, and made by a crew of more than 160 skilled artists across the world. The project was funded by Kickstarter backers, aided by Patreon supporters, and fueled by fan viewership and enthusiasm during the course of its production. So like my actual cat
@@midnights2631 Lol
I’m certain he has done that at some point in the comics.
Fun fact about Rocky: He was voiced by Michael Kovach who also voiced Angel dust from Hazbin hotel and N from murder drones.

Just like Pixar director Brad Bird stated: 'Animation is an art form for storytelling not a genre for kids.'

Bro is the fact man
Since Disney is lacking on hand draw 2d animation, the people are making it themselves!! This is what we want!
I hope your cat is doing well
It's awesome to see that happen, that's for sure. People are making their voices heard without being bound by extremely moronic corporate politics that can cause any project to be cancelled for the stupidest of reasons (~cough~ Netflix ~cough~)
Lmao! I was just going to make that comment, I keep hearing people say their tired of cgi and all that and miss 2d animation and that if they didn't start making it, independent artists would do it themselves......well here we are and it's better quality than what most these big companies are willing to pay for.
Fr, I actually prefer to watch these kind of animations on UA-cam way more than watching the crap that is produced on Disney now. It’s weird how these “small” 2d animations are wayy better than the 1 hour movies coming out in Disney right now.

The use of a stopwatch sound to represent Mordecai’s intense focus is a beautiful artistic answer to the more common heartbeat sound effect.
It really does put it in perspective when he starts counting bullets, counting Freckles' shots. He's keeping his head under fire and thinking cool under pressure. That really gives insight into the kind of character he is.
It also ties into his existing motifs from the comic of gears and clocks.
I reminds me of Arthur's dead eye in rdr2 and it was always a great detail
he was using deadeye
When I heard it it reminded me of the dead eye in RDR2. Definitely the inspiration for this.
The cat body language throughout this entire thing is spot on and perfect
We didn’t even need a script for this the animation alone would’ve sufficed

This is a reminder to SUPPORT INDIE ANIMATION. The major studios aren't bringing us what we want, and they won't listen. Indie animation is what we want, not Netflix with another season of Big Mouth.

Facts
Still mad over the fact that they canceled Inside Job for...........Big mouth 🤢
Let studios like Netflix and Disney dig their own graves deeper than they already have.
I love how theres still the sketch left behind, it adds such a unique quality to the animation.
The animation's good, but in my opinion I think that it would be better without the sketch lines. Just think that it might make the animation style more interesting.
It reminds me of the animation in the movie Wolfwalkers
something ive noticed, people usually criticize the sketch lines you can sometimes see and the final speakeasy scene being ''unfinished'' while i think it just adds to the aesthetic of it being:
A: a cartoon from the 1920s
B: a dream/daydreaming sequence
sketch lines are the best things that can happen to an animation, it just adds to the feel of it being hand drawn by a bunch of talented people.
I dislike the distraction they create but love the aesthetic despite that. So, I'm split but overall in favor of them
This comment is underrated.
@@mitchramey5052 I don't mind it much
The sketch lines call back to the better days of animation. Sure, our technology has become more sophisticated, flawless, and easier to look at. But with it are fewer stories to tell. This is a labor of love, not a soulless corporate product, and every sketch line I see reminds me that this is a real story worth telling.
I agree
Hand drawn animation should never go out of style, and this is proof of exactly why.
yess! it's so special honestly
Animation companies these days could learn a lot from this.
@Frogger what cha mean by that?
@Frogger hand drawn art is significantly more expensive than 3D animation
3D animation its much easier to just reuse the same assets in the same circumstances compared to 2D and since colouring lighting and background don't need to be redrawn every time there is a change makes 3D animations much much cheaper than 2D
next these guys where not forced to used 2D animation they strictly chose to as it does look better and is more expressive
for reference per min of 3D animation it can cost between $1000 to $10 000
but 2D animation can cost between $7000 to $20 000 per min
and thats without the luxury that the cost goes down after the first episode with 3D animation as they dont need to recreate main characters or main areas again and can just render the new scene
BTW this pilot made 124k in the first hour on Kickstarter
@Joshua G Sadly true. I'm no animation expert, but I do know studios and animators are constantly looking for, not necessarily shortcuts, but easier and faster ways to create animation so they can animate better, animate more, and reduce the amount of money and work it takes to make animation happen. And animation is HARD. It can take months to get animation like what we see here. Imagine doing that CONSTANTLY.
Now, I LOVE the animation we see here, and I think it would be great for a film or maybe a comic art style, but for a cartoon series, not so much. They'd have to really downgrade the animation if this was, say, on TV and had a TV budget, but then it would lose a lot of what makes this cool in the first place.

Poor Freckle- but then again as Rocky said, how is he going to deny the chance to show off to Ivy?
I watched this on a school laptop , and our brother new 20 yr teacher asked me “IS THAT LACKADAISY???” She’s a fan
I love how Freckles goes from a shy quiet soul to a psychotic maniac once he gets his hands on the Tommy.
A Chicago typewriter does that to you I guess.
Lesson one children, don’t give Freckles the Tommy.
Orange cat being an orange cat
I love the detail on the Tommy gun here's a few details I noticed.
1. The bull horn sight/handle for the bolt
2. The muzzle break, the fanned barrel and the smoke coming from the muzzle shooting in the right directions
3. You can even see place where the stock is attached to the body
4. The casings ejecting and then bouncing off the magazine and rifle body
Also the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) feels like it has actual recoil. It also switches between firing firing full auto and semi auto.
Nah but fr I love how crazy freckles goes lol

I just said that..
So real
This will seem like a very oddly specific thing to focus on, but the way Serafine is using the BAR as it was originally intended, “walking fire” with the proper sling and all, is a very nice touch.
The BAR and Thompson were of course used in WWII but also the Korean War in the 1950s, In fact some US soldiers and marines still had Tommy Guns in their arsenal until the M3 Grease Gun took it's role
Came back to this again and noticed that today.
@@CrossOfBayonne Wasn't the greaser introduced during WWII? I seem to remember it being known for being one of the cheapest wartime designs.
@dingoatemybaby9739 Yes, The M3 Grease Gun was introduced because Thompson was an expensive weapon to make during WW2, The British did the same with their lend lease Tommy Guns mid war with the Sten which was a 9mm submachine gun but was prone to jamming and was not generally reliable
Michael Kovach is a real voice actor... I remembered his name for being Angel Dust in the Pilot of Hazbin Hotel... I had no idea his voice was also the one of the main guy of this Pilot!! I love when VA can sound completely different each time!
Its funny how he voices in three of the indie shows I watch (Hazbin Hotel, TADC and Lacskasisy)

He's always been my fav, albeit kinda sad for certain reasons, you'll know from the webcomic.
Agreed!
Same-
His psychology is what interests me, in addition to his storytelling potential.
I have the inkling that he could be a heartbreaking tragedy.
16:56 WOW. The historical detail is INSANE! For those who don't know, when she says "done in by a scarf", it refers to the death of popular dancer Isadora Duncan who was tragically killed when her long scarf got caught in her car tire. She drove away, and the tightening of the scarf broke her neck. This animation and story is so good. This needs to be a movie.
should sift through the comic if you havent. many pages are just excuses to draw fictional universe-appropriate prohibition-era St Louis with little captions below the page concerning the research she did for it
And more interesting - she was wife of the Sergey Yesenin. And lived in Soviet Union. For those, who don't know about this man - he was famous Russian poet
Another little detail at 12:08 , the M1918 BAR being used as intended, firing from the hip while advancing on foot. Admittedly, it does have far too big a magazine, and was famously bad for sustained fire IRL because of the small box mag, but still, I just love little history tidbits like that in cartoons.

Omg this is my favorite part too!! I love their flicky movements. This is just too cute
The tail poof when they get scared was completely accurate! My cats have scared each other while playing and it looks just like how it's portrayed during the train passing scene in the graveyard.
Except they can’t see in the dark? 😔
YESSSS! IIRC the extra expressive range cats have is why Tracy J. Butler chose to make the characters that species in the first place! I also love how at 21:11 if you turn on the captions, you can see "cat trill" followed by "upset cat trill". Very accurate cat behavior! XD
Rocky seems like the type of guy to unironically wield a sword and everyone thinks he doesn’t know how to use it until everyone is in danger and he actually is a master with it
And then he trips on this violin and fucks everything up.
That would fit perfectly for rocky
I think he'd be more like a guy who doesn't know how to use a sword and is accidentally good at it
@@welp9356 I can also see that
he brings a sword into a gunfight and still manages to win somehow... lucky devil
Who else is re-watching the pilot on the one-year anniversary?
Yup
I'm grateful to the algorithm supplying and blessing my eyes and mind with such a sublime viewing 😁
I can’t believe I was 14 reading this on Deviantart to finally see a pilot for it at 23. Time flies and things age like fine wine!
Is there a thread I could view? (the alleged original, I would love to know it's origins) Thanks!
So It was pretty much 2016 if so that's fuckn awsome to find someone like you
@@THE_RADIO 2014 if you can believe it…. Those were the days of wild and untamed tumblr, deviantart and more…*stares off reminiscingly*
@@Theredwolfwoman Well howdy, thanks for the notice of the project's history, I just stumbled on this myself and thought it was wonderful! Yep things are definitely changing, it's no longer the wild west of the internet no more. Still... it would be nice if censorship would take a back seat and allow people extraneous to works ease off of creators.
Hell yeah time has flown but it's incredible how these gems have prevailed and grown in something this amazing. It's incredible really
Absolutely Incredible. Well done guys 👏👏👏👏
Hi glitch :3
Heya, GLITCH! I love your Murder Drones series! Michael does a great job voicing N!
✨
GLITCH!?!??!
Ayo Glitch's here too!
Freckle doing a small prayer when they open the box💀
after almost 1 year, this is still one of the best animated pilots out there...
Just the scene of Rocky riding a excavator while throwing dynamite and manically laughing is absolutely insane and awesome
“The sudden circus comes to town!
The behemoth and the top hat clown!
Come gather, gather all around.
See them *rain their fire down!*

‘We’ll make our three rings *ANYWHERE!!!* ‘“

It is!

He's forklift certified.
I can’t get over how appealing this animation is. It’s got such a fluid, expressive and authentically hand drawn feeling to it
I dunno if the rough animation linework being occasionally visible was international, but it’s nice.
I KNEW I RECOGNIZED MICHEAL KOVACH-
TOP TIER VA
N, JAX OR NOT EVEN SMTH FROM GLITCH HE’S STILL GOOD-
Have to give the algorithm credit for leading me here. This is some impressive and entertaining work, looking forward to the series.
Fable: Occasionally the robot does us a solid
Ok but Mordecai actually has some mad trigger discipline and shooter skills which is really portrayed well in a subtle way. Plus he’s literally the only character to even remotely hit who he aimed at lol
I mean, Freckle hit the tire, but he literally mag-dumped spray-and-prayed to do it.
He seems as though he’s taking an isosceles stance, but his feet are very close together and his knees appear locked, which may be problematic.
@@IsaiahIvanEyell we gotta consider he’s a cat. He’ll land just fine.
Him counting the bullets reminded me of Archer. So badass!
@@johncronk8867 he was also mad unprofessional and later dumped his entire pistol mag in the vague direction of Mordecai just to run out of ammo (another great feature, most folks don't remember or consider the fact that guns have limited ammo per magazine XD)
Man, they fucking NAILED the 1920's art deco/prohibition-era feel. The fancy theatric voices, the language, the color palettes, its all so beautiful. I personally love Mordecai's focus scenes. The clock ticking, the aspect ratio shrinking, its so fluid and cool. Sensational. I want to see so much more.
Edit: THE MUSIC?? OH MY GOD
I also liked some of the referenced historic events (like Miss M reading about the death of Isadora Duncan, which happened in September of 1927) and the weapons they used like Mordecai’s Colt 1911, the M1928 Thompson and later Colt 1908 Vest Pocket used by Freckle, and of course that sexy sawed-off M1918 B.A.R. used by the one Cajun cat who’s name I forget. All very common bootlegger and outlaw weapons of the prohibition era (the BAR in particular was in a very similar configuration as one used by Bonnie and Clyde)
There’s no furry in 1920s
AT THE QUARRY THE STEAM SHOVEL IS 100% ACCURATE TOO
@@buzzytrains9037 Diesel/gasoline, not steam. Still clutch-and-cable and period-correct, but not steam. They even have the electronic start controls in the cab and it makes a nice rumble rather than the chuff and wheeze of steam.
Those years in Missouri there were a good number of Jewish and German immigrants. It would reach even more viewers of other backgrounds if we later see subtitles for some characters with realistic accents. from watching the isle of dogs by Wes Anderson. If your going to go this far? Go all the way and don't stop researching
I just love how Mordecai is so patient and focused throughout this whole thing. Sungwon Cho killed it with his character’s voice here. Lovin’ it!
That...was surprisingly...really good! Well done Michael Kovach 👏 and rest of voice cast. I'm invested!
16:24 I love that the Villains are just having fun. No seriously in how many animated Series have you seen the Villains being so amused after they lost. It's genius
Jesus loves you! :)
Nothing is better then the evil people liking what they do. It adds to the role

The orks from Warhammer 40k come to mind.
i love the fact that every popular youtuber has crawled out of the abyss to consume this pilot immediately
?
Can’t blame them, this shit goes hard
Honestly the pilot animation comunity was quite dry from 2021-2022 so it isn’t surprising that a half an hour pilot with this level of qualify drops everyone it watching it.
POPULAR?
Excuse you?
@@devilheartcandy exactly
This is a great series! You have an amazing team of voice actors and animators
13:56 when rocky starts going "insane" it sends a chill down my spine
The amount of times Rocky gets hit in the head in this and in the comics really explained why he is the way he is.
And he gets hit a lot. He spends as much time knocked out as he does walking.
Oh my goodness you might be right
What comics?
Lackadaisy started as a comics! But now they’re making it into a series for yt! Hope that helped explain
@@PLVZKEIIKOO Thx. Webcomics or paper comics?
This animation is beautiful, and as a violinist myself, they actually paid attention to how the bow and fingers move for what notes. Kudos. Most live action films can't even manage that.
You have passion, my friend. Super observant you are
Big films don't have time to worry about details only a tiny amount of people notice, is why they don't manage it
@@BoltBarkingatthemoon they do though..especially big blockbusters...they have the money thus they have time. They just want more of the money so they won't spend that time
@@FOXY_SPHYNX Im so sad Starship Goldfish
resembles Lackadaisy so much but isnt as popular
Bro it looks like its gonna have a very cringe fandom
I just found out yesterday my great grandfather did beer smuggling in the 1920s like they did😶 lit 🔥
Why didn’t this get more hype? I love it
Gurl I was thinking the same thing this is amazing
"What's happening?"
"Rocky."
Gets me every time
Rocky, Ivy, and Freckle are such an iconic trio to me, but funnily enough, this isn't the first time I've seen them.
To me, they're just 3 slices of the entirety of another chaotic trainwreck I fondly remember called *_"Jinx."_*
Smart, loud, and energetic enough to shoot up the whole city of Piltover if she wanted! 😂
I thought it was cat owner tradition to say:
_cat destroys something_
"What happened?"
"Cat happened."
This received more love then some actual animated tv series that had millions to pay its animators.
Some if not most shows that had millions on their production fail for two factors. That being a lack of passion and dedication for said project, you can't work on something like its just work and not care for it, this will affect the quality of the product and in this pilot you can see those factors.
When a show has millions invested in it, the producers have to stick to very strict guidelines which can often limit creativity heavily, usually leading to a prettier but less substantive show than it otherwise might have been
When I first saw this animation, I thought that it took place in Louisiana due to the accents,
(Then I learned about the Roarin’ 20s)
I love how u can still see the hand drawn animation
Mordeci hissing at the water, Freckle chittering at the drink…I love it when animal characters make animal noises even if they’re talking and bipedal.
Starship Goldfish exists, so the spirit lives on.
In General, i alwas ready to recomend some 'Small Content Ceators ' epic 'Masterpiece of a PPilot' but this one is even literally about Starships
21:12
I've never really thought about it that much, but I realize I couldn't agree more. It just makes it feel like there's more thought put into it.
5:10 freckle is good
Can't they also use their claws to fight if they are cats?
