    this movie was my childhood. we had it on VHS, watched it so often that at the beginning the sound would crackle and the screen would stay blank or freeze every few seconds. unfortunately our VHS player broke and I haven't found this movie on dvd yet. I need it for nostalgia purposes
    EDIT: I agree with most of the points you made, it was a good comedy but a bad movie in general, and I have to admit that once I was old enough to understand the Lion King and Bambi, I rarely watched this movie again. I do love the art style, and Archimedes is the most hilarious Disney sidekick ever, but the movie itself is... not memorable, save for Merlin's silly antics.
    on a funny side note, I never caught that Merlin lives backwards in time? I always thought he did a lot of time travel because he hated his own time.

    • @TennelleFlowers
      @TennelleFlowers  5 років тому +8

      The "backwards in time" bit is something that I think is more explained in the book this is based off of, so that's where I got that tidbit of knowledge from. You're right, I don't believe the movie really covers it aside from acknowledging that Merlin can time travel.

    I HATE the "sexual assault/pushing people past their obvious boundaries is okay/funny when women do it" thing. Especially when a lot of people today STILL think that women can't be offenders/men can't be victims.
    If it was a one-off joke I might be able to grin and bear it for that scene, but it goes on for SO. LONG. And is PAINFULLY unfunny. AAAAAAAAAAAAA
    This whole movie just a non-experience with barely any plot and somehow even less characterization. Not a fan, probably one of the first ever full-animation Disney films I would say is straight-up Not Good.

      I admit that while I wasn't against the gag much, it's becoming very badly aged under the new circumstances, especially since they've apparently been going on in Disney/Pixar itself. In perfect fairness I thought Pepe Le Pew was funny because....well...the same reason I thought Elmer Fudd trying to kill Bugs Bunny was funny. It was a cartoon. It never affects them the same way in real life.

      If it helps, I’m considering tackling this issue in my _Adele_ comics, and the protagonist is very much opposed to sexism against men, to the point where she gets offended over even the slightest quip about them.

    High fantasy is defined as being set in an alternative world to our own - Middle Earth, Westeros, Azeroth just to name a few. I believe you're thinking of more "historical" fantasy, which the original Arthurian canon is based on.

    • @TennelleFlowers
      @TennelleFlowers  5 років тому +12

      That could be it! Although I could swear that there's some kind of term to describe the difference between fantasy that has more grounded, realistic rules and fantasy that just shrugs and says "a wizard did it" lol
      I thought that was High and Low fantasy, but I might be completely wrong.

      @@TennelleFlowers you're thinking of Hard and Soft Magic systems.
      Hard Magic is magic with rules and boundaries, kinda like the Original Star Wars trilogy, the Force is a hard type magic with specific rules, like a bit of telekinesis, precognition, and during death being a simple spirit guide.
      Soft Magic doesn't have clear rules, basically anything can happen and it's very handwavy. Harry Potter is a soft magic system, and so is Merlin in *"The Sword and the Stone"*

    I'm definitely in the "grew up with this movie and still enjoy it" camp. Like I said last week, I value entertainment over production quality, and while this movie has a LOT of big problems that you made some very strong points about, it counter-balances it with a whole lot of fun moments, which is a lot more than I can say about "The Wild Swans".
    Though I definitely would have been curious to see that Chanticleer movie...I'm sure it would have been MUCH better than Bluth's take on it...

    The Sword in the Stone is definitely underwhelming compared to the concept of Chanticleer, but I still enjoy the movie for its fun cartoon antics and some nice designs. Certainly not the most memorable Disney film out there, and I agree with many of your problems with it, I still think it's an entertaining movie.

    I belive the brain vs. brawn thing is very prominent to some degree in this movie, but they kinda gloss over the most important part; the heart! As you mentioned, Arthur kinda gets pushed around, doesn't do much for himself. If he were to follow his heart we could maybe have learned more about him as a character! I am a strong believer that the heart is just as important in social situations as brawns and brains.
    Oh, and on a side note, the old bickering couple is so true! I have an old couple in my family, and they argue all the time. Like, a younger couple would end up in a divorce! But still. There they are. Together. It's strange. And inspiring.

    I'd say Edgar from the Aristocats is slightly worse than Madame Mim only because I actually pitied him when I was supposed to be rooting for his demise. But yeah, Mim is one of the weaker ones. The Horned King is a mixed bag. He had POTENTIAL to be one of the best with his awesome character design and vocal performance by John Hurt. But the script left him sitting in the background while all of his minions did the dirty work.

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 5 років тому +1

      I think both Edgar and Madame Mim did their intended job, Edgar was supposed to be a more mundane bumbler while Madame Mim was meant to be just another mischievous nuisance within the flow of adventures. They were comedy and the film worked off of that. The Horned King was meant to be this big epic threat...and then didn't really live up to that.

    I have an interesting relationship with this movie. I never owned it, but when I was younger my mother was a maid that cleaned McMansions in the neighbouring city and I would often come along with her on jobs to help dust/move stuff/whatever else a seven or so year old could do.
    One of the houses we often cleaned had this movie on VHS (along with Quest for Camelot, oddly enough), and the owners of the house always allotted me use of their back yard and television when I came along. I always used to watch this movie (I watched Quest for Camelot once and never again) and it became something of an association with those summers I spent helping my mum clean, especially since she would occasionally take a bit to explain Arthurian legend to me while I was watching.
    I won't say this movie is "good", but it does make me think of my mum and that kind of endears it to me.
    (I also had a sing-a-long tape back in the day and it had the song where Merlin cleans his house out on it, but that's not nearly as significant to me.)

    Aside from the black cauldron, this is one of Disney's forgotten movies, and its easy to see why. Such a shame too, because I love the Arthurian legend and you can do a lot with it. Like, showing more of Merlin and Arthur's "father son relationship" or, ya know, Arthur's reaction on the fact that his father was king (and the fact that Merlin lowkey planned his conception). In some versions, Merlin's half demon. Maybe Merlin is so interested in the kid because he relates to him in some way. The Sword in the Stone story isn't devoid of ideas and it sucks that the movie turned out this way. Oh well, we should've gotten that chicken movie, it seems like they actually had a full story in mind.

    As a Kingdom Hearts fan, I love the Traverse Town/Hollow Bastion group, and would love to say that I love Sword and the Stone because I do like Merlin's character in Kingdom Hearts. But.
    I never liked this movie. I think I watched it once as a kid, versus the dozens of times I watched 101 Dalmations, Oliver and Company, or Fox and the Hound.
    Quick edit to add that Mimm reminds me of the crab in Moana. Not connected to anything, set in a place we don't care about otherwise, and we never talk about them again. I really hate when Disney does that when I know they can do villains like Cruella, Scar, Hades, Jafar, etc. I don't even like Frozen but Hans was a better villain even than Mimm or the crab.
    Second edit at the end to add:
    Disney: Oh no, our voice actor went through puberty, keep rotating kids so we can get all the lines.
    Square Enix: Hey, Haley Joel Osmet, we know you're like thirty but can you voice KH1 Sora for us again?

    Unlike Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book; this film was not able to rise to be a Disney classic like the other Walt era classics.

    Arthur's character did indeed feel like he was being pushed around a lot. But don't forget that he did stand up to Ector in the 2nd act. I also haft to defend Merlin when he snaps at Arthur being happy becoming squire for Kay. How humiliating to be serving a bully and douche for their glory. Merlin wanted to see Arthur change and grow with a stronger mindset. He was brutally honest, but he had a point. And it was nice to see the film promote that brains before brawn for a boy could solve problems. At least compared to all the knight in shinning armor propaganda. Yeah the animals were cute, but I too did not like that squirrel part.

    23:18 but to be fair the mindset of sexual harassment isnt as bad when a girl does it, or girls are incapable of sexually harassing men, is a very VERY common point of view from people in today's society and it was nice for someone to call it out as sexiest.
    I'm not going to lie I had this movie as a kid and would watch it ALL the time because it was on the same VHS as sleeping beauty and lady and the tramp, and so I watched it a lot as a result. I would will say that Pete's dragon was another one I watched or was in the mood for when I was in the mood for just this film, and the animated bits of that remind me a lot of this movie, and as a result I always kinda ran these things together. Overall I like this movie, based off memory

    A couple years ago I got around to reading The Once and Future King by TH White, 4 books that tell the Arthurian legend starting with the Sword and the Stone. And it clicked why the Disney movie feels very disjointed story wise then abruptly ends with Arthur drawing the sword and becoming king because the books is even more disjointed and wandering episodic that only remembers the Sword in the Stone in the final chapter. The book is pretty much Arthur meets Merlin, becomes his tutor, gets turned into a bunch of animals to learn lessons then pulls the sword and becomes king..only the lessons don’t really show why Wart becomes Arthur because he doesn’t really learn anything, he’s kinda an obnoxious brat in the book, so technically the Disney version is a faithful adaptation of the book, it’s just the source material is a mess, much like Arthurian legend as a whole.
    I think Disney could have made a great King Arthur movie using the sword in the stone as the plot, it just needed a much stronger script

    • @TennelleFlowers
      @TennelleFlowers  2 роки тому

      I’ve never read the book, so it’s great to get a perspective from someone who has!
      Yeah, if all that is true about the book, I think it would have been much more interesting to see what the Disney team could have done with the story if it had been given a story treatment more like Cinderella or Snow White was.

    • @Tadicuslegion78
      @Tadicuslegion78 2 роки тому

      @@TennelleFlowers if I was tasked with adapting The Sword in The Stone, the number one thing I’d do is make sure the story shows why this nobody orphan is meant to be the legendary king worthy of pulling the sword through a journey of him learning lessons then actually applying those lessons when facing the villain after drawing the sword

    I'm rather surprised this wasn't one of the movies that got a sequel or TV series of some sort, not just for the reasons you stated and to develop Arthur more as a proactive character, but also because of the very episodic format that could have made it easy to make more stories out of. Plus you know, it's KING ARTHUR. It is actually one of those films where I was left going "Wait that's it?" at the end.
    This is generally a change in format we see a lot between old and new Disney movies. Older Disney movies tend to present the time and flow of the story as a futile process, the protagonists actually rarely feel proactive to the story, especially the ones that are children, they're just immersing things around them, while later ones go the opposite route, make them more the impetus, and if anything often given them sort of natural flow of things just for them to defy and change.

    Never cared for this one. As someone who's a big folklore/mythology junkie, this film really squandered the Arthurian aspects, and really should have been a more generic medieval fantasy. I also agree that this plot is rather scatterbrained, and needed some serious rewrites to make it more of a flowing narrative. Lower tier Disney film for sure.

Also, I hate being “rude” but Disney is a group of progressional animators and maybe people who aren’t shouldn’t be exposing movies like this.
