    120hz display of the Pro won't cause less battery life. Don't forget it's a variable refresh rate. So it will actually reduce battery consumption.

    • @Hhhh22222-w
      @Hhhh22222-w 5 місяців тому +6

      It will though, only instances you'll go below 60hz is when you are on a still image, anything else will go at the highest possible refresh rate and the device needs to process when to use the 120hz and when to lower which requires energy to process.
      Think of it this way, a single scroll on a 120hz display will always be double the 60hz display multiply that by the number of scrolls per day and you get way more, the instances of where you have it at less than 60hz occurs far less.

    • @Litotes_89

      @@Hhhh22222-w except that isnt true. Its not static like that. The lowest promotion will go is 24, up to 120hz. Surfing the web and watching content, the refresh rate seldom goes to 120HZ. This is why promotion doesnt nearly feel as smooth as lets say a static 120hz screen. On really fast scrolling the refresh rate will indeed bump to 120hz, but most of the time the refresh rate will be as low as 24, as for the 60hz display will be set to a static 60hz.

    I’m a journalist and I’ve a 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 with an A12Z and a magic keyboard. It works perfectly well for me as I can edit podcasts with Logic Pro or Ferrite with lots of beautiful audio plugin, news video in 4K with DaVinci Resolve or LumaFusion, edit photos in Raw, study and edit documents with Goodnotes, write pieces with Runestone (i write with Textedit on my Macs since 2009) and so on. I think I’ll not upgrade for now. For me it’s not a matter of hardware: give us a better multitasking and file management.

    I actually just went for a 12.9inch M1 iPad Pro. My alternative was the M2 Air. I personally don’t think I’d have been upset with the 60Hz refresh rate of the new air, but the small things like Face ID and the improved speakers is just… worth it, for me at least. The incremental increase in power from the M1 to M2 is going to be hard for me to notice with my usage, I just wanted to be able to hook it up to an external monitor so needed an M chip! Maybe I’ll make a little vacation video from time to time on it, but the seconds I save in rendering vs the money I save now, I’m excited for my new to me, M1 iPad Pro!

I never had any issues with it still worked perfectly, but I decided to upgrade so I sold it for $300 with the first generation, Apple Pencil and the logictech keyboard case. I just bought A brand new 12.9 inch iPad Pro with the M2 chip and 256 GB of memory for $890 👈👀at BJ’s last one left. I bought the logictech keyboard combo touch for $129 on Amazon. Mine has dropped incredibly in battery life despite it being 96% of it’s original capacity according to analysis reports, that’s the only reason I’m considering changing it but then again it could be because of the OS being a little more battery hungry than the older OS, also that’s like 100€ for a battery replacement from Apple so it’s a better option then trading this one in for the new pro and having to pay 600 more

  • @AlexNunziato

    Awesome video! Another thing I would like to point out: if you buy from the apple certified refurbished they have already replaced the battery and outer shell, so you don't have to worry about the previous owner's batter care or any scratches. I believe that they also do a full test of all the devices that they are selling and replace any parts that don't work, so its far more trustworthy to buy directly from the apple refurbished than from someone random on ebay or facebook marketplace. Also in their new announcement only M-series chips are supported, so if you want the new update go for an m-series ipad.

      It sounds crazy but I might actually consider the air for one reason: the new pencil. I use my Apple Pencil a lot and after testing it at the store, it’s difficult for me to buy a new iPad for myself without upgrading the pencil. Generally though buying used flagship is better than new budget and these iPads are no exception

    • @Adeyum64
      @Adeyum64 2 місяці тому +2

      @@Mejrfrog Yeah, same for me... plus the fact, that you'll get the newer iPads for 10% cheaper as a student, and even the Apple Pencil Pro for completely free right now. It's probably a good deal for non-students, but a complete waste for those, who are students. Especially, like you mentioned, for those who profit from the Pencil features. Also the fact, that I have a Macbook, kinda makes the Pro a bit useless. And I even think of upgrading to a Pro iPhone years later, which would make the Pro even more useless. 120Hz is nice and all, but not even my monitors at home are 120Hz, only 60Hz/75Hz. I would just throw out money for a bit more features + an Apple Pencil 2, which... god knows how long it will still get support.

    I was actually hoping to catch an M2 iPad Pro on sale after the M4s came out. I traded in a previous M1 iPad Pro due to diminished battery performance and got a good rate from Best Buy for it. As the M2 iPad Pros had not yet been reduced for a good deal, I purchased an M2 iPad Air. As soon as my return window closed, the M2 iPad Pros went on sale for essentially the same price as the M2 iPad Airs. I was a bit disappointed at first, but realize that the Air has two additional years of overall modernity and software life even though the devices have the same chip inside. The hardware adjustments, such as the horizontal camera and compatibility with the Apple Pencil Pro may be something that I come to value a year or two down the road. Overall, because of the way that I use my iPad, it probably doesn't matter that much. I was used to using an iPad Pro, but didn't really use it for pro tasks.
    If I could do things all over again, I would be fine either way! 😆

    I went from the original iPad Air to the M1 Pro a year ago (10.9" and 11" versions). My opinion might be different than others, but here's my 2 cents. First off, I don't use these for any heavy lifting, as I have a MacBook Pro M1 for that, which is much easier for photo/video edits, etc.. Portrait camera on both makes them useless even for FaceTime calls, IMO. The M1 Pro's screen is marginally brighter, but it's not like it's burning the retina in my eyeballs either. ProMotion vs. non-ProMotion...I know many comment that it's a deal breaker for them. For me it's a marginal improvement, and the non-ProMotion didn't bother me to begin with. I don't listen to music on these, so speakers mean nothing, and I have Beat's Pro buds if that's the case. Cameras?? I have my iPhone Pro for that need. Here's what might surprise some....I hate FaceID on the M1 Pro. I missed the instant open with my index finger on the touch sensor of the Air. Needing to have my face within acceptable range of the iPad to open it...and this without my hand blocking the sensor-which it does more than half the time, to me is an inconvenience. Honestly, I didn't find the upgrade to the M1 Pro to original Air worth the extra money at the time. Like other people, I like getting the 'best' toy available, even if it's unnecessary, and this was one of those cases. To me the only reason to upgrade to the new iPads would be if you REALLY want that landscape camera. Everything else is gonna be a similar experience unless and until they make iPadOS more like a MacBook. My iPads always get hardly used because iPads are limited so much by the OS, making them by far strictly consumption devices for the overwhelming vast majority of users.

    I own an iPad Pro 2018 256gb 4gb Ram since release and have been editing Canon and Fuji Raw in Lightroom and GoPro 4K without major hassle.
    Since about 3 years I have been using mirrorless video footage to edit in Lumafusion and that’s when stability became a bit of an issue. I also use an ssd to edit directly with, which made the iPad struggle for a bit. Exports started to fail, previewing cuts with slo-Mo’s and speedups started to crash. I had to export a lumafusion package to export it on my M1 MBP. That worked fine but it’s been a tedious process.
    I ordered a new M2 iPad Pro 512gb 8gb today for what I think is a fair price for EU standards (1150 €) and I believe that it would be a significant bump up in performance. At least I hope so. It has the same Thunderbolt4 connection as the m4 and better codec support from what I’ve heard compared to the 2018 version. No Oled but that’s alright. I have been editing a lot on the original one and never had any complaints about that.

And although in some respects the new OLED display on the M4 pros is very nice, for many purposes the miniLED display on the 12.9 M1 ipad pro is just as nice. I will give Apple a few more years to work out the kinks and lower the prices of OLED equipped devices.

And second, there is an apple pencil 2nd gen that my daughter doesn’t really use on her IPad mini 6th gen so it’s for me to use most of the time..bought it for $659 with the base storage. And yeah when i got it, it’s almost pristine , just a few minor very negligible scratch at the back.Im putting it into a magic keybaord most of the time anyways..from $599 on the iPad Air 11 to what i paid for with the things i wanted ticked, I’m satisfied very satisfied.. performance blows me away, again, I’m comparing it to a 10 year old iPad Air 2. I see that 120Hz iPhone users have no problem adapting to a 60Hz iPad. However, you should know that people who use 120Hz or higher on big devices like laptops or PC monitors find it difficult to adapt, and the iPad is in the middle of this transition.

    I just ordered a new in box 2022 128gb M2 Pro for 30% less than a new 256gb 2024 Pro. The location of the camera is the biggest downside but realistically I don’t use it much for video calls and if I do, I’ll have a reason to upgrade but for what I use it for, I couldn’t justify the cost of a 2024 iPad Pro. I may regret it in the next Black Friday sales but we’ll see…

    I will upgrade eventually as my M1 iPad Pro has a damaged display.
    I don’t really push the capabilities of iPad Pro but I remember that great feeling I had when I unboxed it and started using it, Magic Keyboard and Pencil, and started using it after a straight iPad.
    My biggest irritation is the ff camera placement. Not just on my 1-2 times a month video calls but I also find I am very often covering the camera when I have it in hand, so FaceId doesn’t work well. Thinking of trying an external USB camera to get round the video call problem but may need to change my handling technique!
    So thinking refurbed M2 iPad Pro 256Gb (about €900) v new M2 Air (Also 256Gb blue @ around €1,000 with a new pencil). Unfortunately no trade-in value for a beaten up iPad so would add Apple Care onto a new Air!
    So waiting until my display completely disintegrates before making the decision…

    Thank you for this. I have an iPad Pro 2018 version and noticed the battery life hasn’t been great lately and was thinking of upgrading to a new iPad Air 2024 model and was looking at a comparison. I just mainly use it for watching videos or shows and don’t have any of the accessories. Just general use. My thought was the air has 128 GB and my pro only has 64 GB. So I thought I could update my storage space and get better battery plus a newer chip. But I didn’t realize the 120 refresh rate and no Face ID on the Air. So your video was very informative. I’ll ask the opinion of anyone in the comments here, is it a good idea for me to switch from you iPad Pro 2018 to the new iPad Air? Or stick with what I have since it still works fine?

  • @oh00olo
    @oh00olo 3 місяці тому

    Buy the M2 Pro. The Air's 60Hz screen stutters horribly, and the difference in speaker quality between the Pro and the Air is overwhelming (the Pro 11 is better than the Air 13). Touch ID is very inconvenient on a large tablet, but with the Pro, you get Face ID that works from four directions. Additionally, the M2 Air has one fewer GPU core compared to the M2 Pro (Air: 9 cores, Pro: 10 cores), and the Pro supports Thunderbolt and USB4. The rear flash and LiDAR scanner are exclusive to the Pro. The Air's display bezel is thicker than the Pro's, and the device itself is unnecessarily thicker. Even accessories like the Magic Keyboard do not fit perfectly with the Air. Also, the Air does not support front-facing portrait photos. There is a significant difference in microphone quality as well (the Pro comes with studio-quality microphones). Just buy the Pro. The differences are too great. The only thing the Air does better is running the Apple Pencil Pro on its dreadful 60Hz fixed screen.
    Oh, and the Pro also comes with a dual-camera setup that includes an ultra-wide camera. Additionally, despite having the same M2 chip, the Air lacks the ProRes encoding and decoding engine. And the Pro's display is 100 nits brighter.

    While that might sound good. remember that batteries get old, and its not something that is easily fixed in today's climate. Even if a battery has not been used and been sitting idle, it is degrading.
    small story on my end. last year I bought a set of lithium ion batteries for some hardware. One of the batteries wasn't charging to full, and would discharge rather quickly. I thought that all it needed was a few charges, as some controllers that are built into the complex batteries need a bit of calibration. well it never got better. my other batteries were charging to full, and would easily last nearly 3x longer than this one black sheep battery that I had. I then looked at the info on these batteries and it turns out one was from 2019, and the other ones were from 2023.
    we already know that through software apple/Samsung under-clock your devices over time, as the battery ages so it can last longer, until it finally kicks the bucket. but under-clocking means you'll be getting slower and slower performance. If apple would make 1st party new batteries and if they were friendly for repair, then great. but reality is a bit different.
