How the Waffle House Was Built

- Weird History Food is gonna pull over and get a bite at the Waffle House. In 1955, two neighbors in Georgia opened up a restaurant. Since opening, The Waffle House has created its own culture, with its own unique language and customs, and has been the popular destination after the bars close and for anyone on a road trip.

Well said mate ☺️☺️
The waffle house found its new host
I am quite entertained
Hahah. Been fortunate enough to go after the clubs close and no fights, thank God!

Wow, these co-owners had a lifetime together in business and died 8 days apart, that's amazing. They left a heck of a legacy behind...R.I.P.
A “month” later
We need a waffle house in maryesther for our home town. How about it love the eggs 🥚 and the whole thing
I’ve been cooking at Waffle House in south Louisiana for 3 years now and I still love coming to work every day. It’s a great place honestly
That's good
WH vet here. Pecan waffles are straight 🔥
I've worked graveyard shifts at IHOP.
It's all true.
Shit gets weird after midnight
A good thing I don't eat out after hours lol.
As a bartender I felt bad anytime I went to IHOP or WaffleHouse after closing . We kicked out all the drunks, and ended up running into them there
@@RedRoseSeptember22 yea
I got the night club crowd at IHOP. I worked in the dish pit. People thought it was a good idea to drink lots of liquor and then come eat a heavy breakfast. Guess what they went to the bathroom and did then. Yeah, I know how it feels.
I work at an amusement park and we have this massive Halloween season event where we close at 2am. Nothing was better than going to the IHOP across the street and getting some pancakes with my friends after work during those nights.
Waffle House index is a thing all floridians keep an eye on. During the last hurricane I was in, I didn't have power for 2 weeks and Waffle House was my only source of fresh made food for the first half of that (once they got functioning again on a limited menu). It seems silly but that was a such a relief in all that hell to have at least 1 warm meal every few days.
I love in Florida as well if a waffle house closes you better get out.
Waffle House is the definition of an institution.
Ah, Waffle House. It truly is a beacon of light. From drunken after-parties when the bars close, to a quick bite on a road trip. Waffle House was there for us when my mom was recently hospitalized. After a long evening in the ER, by the time we got her settled in a room, the cafeteria was closed; but the Waffle House next door was open. You could tell the staff was used to doctors, nurses, and anxious and tired family members coming in, and were just as kind as you would want.
You know it seems funny but that waffle House index is no joke. I live down South for a good while and you could really tell how bad it was if that waffle House was either open or closed. If it was closed you were darn near screwed and you need to find the nearest shelter, highland or emergency center. No joke.
It’s certainly something very unique
In Texas especially with tornados. Its at least a place to pull over and into for shelter.
Like the Big Mac index
The lines on the day after a hurricane are absolutely bonkers
If Waffle House is closed in Florida it's got to be a big hurricane
Worked at Waffle House all my college years. And all of the statements in this video are true! Things would occasionally get crazy on 3rd shift. But it was like family. Spent many nights serving hot food to cold travels coming in from a blizzard or ice storm - Waffle House was sometimes the only place open for miles on holidays or during bad weather. Still very proud to have made Master Grill Operator - I could really sling some food from the grill back in the day....
Fun fact: Macho Man Randy Savage was once involved in a knife fight with someone at a Waffle House.
"Oh Yeah ! Why don't you like Slim Jim's man ?!"
Every Waffle House I've been to has been absolutely amazing.
They actually give a shit about the customers in a real genuine way
I must've not gone to the right ones then lol.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 I guess so. I've been to a few and they've all been really clean and the food is delicious.
If your waffle house is open: all is well
If your waffle house has switched to reduced menu: There is some kind of ongoing disturbance
If the waffle house is destroyed or gone: Run, and may god have mercy on your soul
Yay finally my favorite chain.
Mostly because I am an over night stocker and they are always open and give us a bit of solace at night.
All star for the win. 😂
As silly as the Waffle House Index seems, it actually makes a lot of sense on a fundamental level. Especially if you want to consider what sort of issues a city is having with things like infrastructure or access to needed services.
Also, despite this being mostly a southern chain, I need to check to see whether there's any in Minnesota. I could always go for a simple breakfast place...and we here in MN always love our diners.
I've only been to a waffle house once, on my drive from Florida back to my home in Pennsylvania. It was like 6am and was definitely one of the most interesting breakfast experiences I've ever had. Something about being dead tired in the morning while knowing there was 8-10 hours of drive ahead definitely made the hashbrowns, eggs and chocolate milk hit some type of way
I don't think I've ever actually seen a Waffle House before and I was pretty okay with that. Until I saw those hash browns with a bunch of crap on them, that looked amazing. I think I'm just really hungry
They are excellent. My son always gets triple hbs for about $2.
It was built on blood, sweat & tears. Hope all of those people who threw down in Waffle House are doing okay.
I got an opportunity to try Waffle House when I visited my sister; I had seen plenty of the signs along the interstate during cross-country road trips, but until November 2022 I had never actually eaten at one.
I ordered a Texas Bacon Egg & Cheese Melt with some hash browns covered and peppered. The food was good (perfectly crispy hash browns!), the place was clean, and I left warm and full. It might be a while before I get to enjoy it again, seeing as there are no Waffle Houses anywhere along the West Coast, but I look forward to it.
I have had my hash browns smothered, covered, capped, and chunked since 1995.
EDIT: My step dad was an over the road truck driver and I spent many summers in a rig with my mom and him. Waffle House was a food group.
"Water and a cup of coffee to start, Patty melt plate double the plate, scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, diced, and capped, bottle of Heinz 57 and ranch on the side please ma'am (or sir)." is the 3am order that has saved the next day more times then I can even count...
and don't forget that "please" or to say "thank you" (and tip generously) afterward. Waffle House employees on third shift are absolute angels for being there 24-7, 365, dealing with all the shenanigans that can take place.
I love the content... no matter which narrator 😉
Maybe in the future, you could do a video on the history of IHOP.
IHOP is one of my fave places to go ♥
I remember going to a Waffle House for the first time in Columbia, Missouri.
My friend told me that he knew a girl who worked at the restaurant and she could get us "a deal."
When that girl dropped our ticket at the end of the meal, it was easily the lowest price I had ever seen for a sit-down restaurant (around $11 for both of us). Her discount made it around $6!
“After hours trips to Waffle House can get dangerous”
And I wouldn’t have it any other way
I prefer Huddle House myself, but that's probably because it's really close whereas Waffle House is a 25 minute drive.
Huddle House has some good burgers!
The using condiments in positions on the plates instead of writing down. Was back in the 1930s 40s 50s and some of the 60s. Most cooks could not read.
My Dad was a Waffle House manager for a while. We used to jokingly refer to it as Awful House.
I ordered a large OJ once, and got something like eight ounces. I told the waitress I ordered a large, she retorted that WAS a large. My stepsister's boyfriend cracked, "That's the Awful House for ya, where everything comes in two sizes: Small and Smaller."
Ahh, good times....
Similarly we call it Awful Waffle
It must be endlessly stressful, and endlessly entertaining to work there.
You have NO idea...
The Bloodhound Gang also mentioned Waffle House in their song “The Bad Touch.”
That's one awesome video and I love it. Thank you so much. You are really amazing. ❣️😍
Great vid guys always fun to watch
In a weird way, this makes me feel even more proud of America.
The ICP Waffle House fight story is amazing.
God Bless You, Greenfield, IN.
My best friend was a cook for Waffle House for years until they graduated. They had to take an entire class on how to cook the food as well as learn all the lingo for the food. They would tell catch phrases at each other & know exactly what to make. It was wild.
This was really interesting! I had no idea about the weather index or the record label. I have eaten at Waffle Houses on business trips and liked the waffles. Just now I looked up online recipes and see there are some recipes that try to duplicate Waffle House waffles. I have to try one of them.
10:45 It wasn't even a month between their passings; it was a Beatles week.
I went to the Waffle House two weeks ago for the first time in years and I tell you that steak and cheese hash brown bowl was like a greasy heaven.
Waffle is great between the hours of 6am-12am, but not 12am-6am
mmmm, pecan waffles. I once lived near one that had an "all you can eat" option of a few menu items, like burgers and waffles. Good times.
Waffle House is better than IHOP, because waffles are superior to pancakes because they have pockets!
Seems like Waffle House is the best place to be. It offers the best quality of waffles for the most part.
From what people have been seeing recently. They'll even serve you chairs they'll throw them right at you and if you throw them back or just throw them at the employees. The employees are specialists in the art of kung fu they'll just deflect it
Been to waffle house an umpteenth number of times and I've never seen the logo cooked into the waffle.
The old waffle iron ls use to do it .most of them are no longer in service
That's lame cause when I'm really drunk and starring semiconscious into my waffle I'd like to have a reminder of where I am.
Waffles are my favorite breakfast food on the weekend (though i do like the pancakes at IHOP...but that's different matters altogether), thanks for sharing and cya next video!
Suggestion: An eatery I worked at about 40 years ago. Steak 'N' Shake. On Watson Road in Crestwood, MO.
Never been to that one, but I LOVE Steak 'n Shake! Got to be one of the most reasonably priced places to have such decent food.
Thanks for adding actual captions for the Deaf.
I went to Waffle House last night. Still hungover🤢
Hydrate.
Back in my drinking days I would eat just about anything and when it's four in the morning your options are limited.
As someone who’s still in the midst of their drinking days, I can confirm
@@Sniperboy5551 Wawa is a surprisingly solid option!
I worked at WH for a few months and haven't worked there since then but they still have good food (it's a loooong story)
I love wafful house plus they used to always have Al Green in the Jukebox
Waffle House is where you can get dinner and often a show at 3 AM. Also, the original WH is a museum now.
I love me some Waffle House. Cooked there as a teen and actually one night 35 years later when a cook quit midway through my order. I'd just worked in a ditch for 10 hours and I was gonna have my pork chops, eggs over light, crispy HB with dry toast so I went and cooked it myself.
Two other guys asked if I could hook them up and I told them if the Waitress called it slow I'd try but I was very rusty! I got them their orders up and sat down to eat my dinner and the waitress handed me the phone. I talked to the GM and agreed to work the grill for a couple of hours and he'd pay me a couple hundred cash. I had fun cooking there as a kid and even more as an almost ancient guy.
I was almost sad tosee my replacement put on his apron and hat but then I remembered my hard day and was asleep before my helper fired up the truck. Great memory I hope didn't bore anyone.😊
I love Waffle House so much but I live on the west coast and I can only get it when I go home to Atlanta😞
Not to mention that Waffle House employees are hardcore as hell, it's like they only hire retired mercs. It's an unwritten rule to not start any trouble in a Waffle House.
A+ video!
It is a really unique experience there.
There’s another regional chain that’s similar, called Huddle House. I’d love it, if you could cover their history, please.
Sooooo want them to expand to Europe!!!
YEP
I can imagine this in the UK.
All star special. Always and forever.
Please do a video on truck stop food., which I actually like.
finally went to Waffle House last week and was not disappointed
The lady narrator is great for the WHF channel.
I've lived in the midwest for 20+ years and I certainly miss Waffle House. They were always great to go to in the middle of the night when nothing else was open and we were hungry.
it's weird hearing a neighborhood right down the street from where i grew up being called out on a video.
Having grown up around Waffle House and having friends and family work there over the years, I have seen and heard all kinds of stories. There are other interesting things about the chain that the video doesn’t even touch on. Like the way everyone in the corporate office is required to work a shift at one of the stores at least once a year so that they don’t forget how the stores work. I have met Joe Rogers, Sr doing this in his eighties. He told the staff that he didn’t want any special treatment because he was just one of them. He would work the dish pit and take out trash.
My favorite food in Waffle House’s menu would be the All-Star Breakfast! In it, there is a waffle (which you can order as original buttermilk, blueberry, pecans, or even topped with peanut butter), eggs (your choice of being scrambled or fried), three strips of bacon or two sausage patties, hash browns or grits, and a couple slices of toast (be white, wheat or cinnamon raisin). This is something I enjoy chowing down before work in the morning. (It’s usually safe and peaceful in the morning in my area, you see. Thankfully, by the grace of God, I’ve never personally encountered a viral brawl in Waffle House so far.) You gotta love the All-Star Breakfast! 👍🏼🧇🥓🍳🍞🥔🧈🍽
Have bots gotten to this level? Or are you just really into diners? lol
@@The.One.True.B Don’t worry, I’m real
@@redroseabc5099 it was just such a specific list of each option and everything that it reads like an ad or a comment bot lol
@@The.One.True.B thank you 😊
Idk why the analogy at 10:47 broke my heart but, it did
Those late nights on the weekends during those high school years at the "Awful Waffle"...IN Georgia!!! I have so many stories.
over a 40 year span I caught several cases of the clap at waffle house
History of Greggs in the UK would be mint!
the male narrator is so much better.
The new chick trying to read the script like the normal guy comes off very dry and stilted.
🤘🏻🎱🤘🏻
Have you guys done a Roscoe's chicken and waffles history?
Everything is better smothered and covered 🤣
It’s not Waffle House, issa Waffle Home. 🏠 💛
Gonna hit one or several if I ever road trip back east.
Around '95 or '96, I applied for a work permit ('cause I was under age) so I could work at my first official for real actual job (helping the county fair get set up) that paid real cash American. Finishing around 3 or 4am with a Benjamin weighing down our bindles, we all headed straight to the Waffle House. I ordered a steak, the first thing I paid for with my own sweat. It was delicious. They also had a cigarette vending machine so that's where we'd buy smokes when we were under 18, even though I didn't smoke myself.
RIP to Waffle House grits. I ate the grits when they still served them. She did not even have a moment of silence for the grits😭
They still serve grits
What Waffle House are you going to that is out of grits?
For the first time in my life, I feel the need to write an ode. Some Shakespearean type document on the beauty of the establishment. Whether a fugitive or hobo, c'mon in and we'll feed you well. God bless the waffle home
Not gonna lie, their grilled chicken is the best I've had in any fast food restaurant. I love their waffles and capped hash browns.
I haven't been to a waffle house in a long time. Use to be one of my dad's favorites. I haven't lived near one though in many years. We don't really have them in Illinois or Nevada so I haven't had some hash browns scattered and covered and a nice waffle in forever
What I find weird is how there's so many people who move away and nobody takes waffle House with them.
As a Nevadan I pray they never do come here lol.
Lol. Stop calling us chefs. We blushing.
i really want a waffle house arena mod for oblivion
edit: lol, interesting choice to include kanye in this video
I never been to one it's none in nyc... but I'm in sc so I will get a chance to try it out before I leave,
How could you not include jelly roll when it comes to Waffle House and hip hop artists?!
I like the man's voice way better
Going to WH tonight! 👍🏾
It's funny how we use Waffle House closures as a gauge for disaster relief the same way Poland uses closed clams to gauge their water purity.
Texas bacon cheesesteak
Double order of hash browns: scattered, covered and chunked baybaayyy
One would think the reason that servers have to orientate condiments. The way they do would lead one to think that this is a restaurant that doesn’t use a lot of reading lol.
People gotta eat. And Waffle House won't let people go hungry.
I wish they would come to Illinois
It is amazing how a simple waffle has made millions
"Bacon wrapped Planet"......🤣
Never been. It’s on my bucket list
I must've been to some bad locations then because the one I visited last (sometime in 2015 in Phoenix) was filthy and gross and none of this stuff was on the menu. But this video it looks delicious lol.
Best fights i've ever seen. 10/10 foods bleh
HOLY CRAP SAM WASN’T MEMING. I never imagined that the waffle house index would be a real thing
Located on just about every exit ramp on interstate 85.
The entirety of Florida has entered this *uckin’ chat
My preferred meal:
x Classic Sweet Cream Waffle
x Bacon
x Coffee (black)
I thought we were gonna talk about how the building itself was built not the food duh we all want construction
I'm a Chicagoan and have never been to the waffle house. However 4 Empire State buildings of sausage patties a day explains the girth of southerners.
