I appreciate the talking about different parts of the kit but would really, really love the talking be accompanied by playing and letting us hear what the different parts sound like in a little bit of context. More playing throughout, demoing the sounds and grooves, please!
So nice to hear him say 22x16 is the perfect size bass drum. A lot of companies running 22x14 and that's fine and well, but agree on the 16" depth. Awesome video! Matt rules!
Always wondered about drum setups from the more unknown post hardcore scene. Would be amazing if you guys could catch Hail the Sun, Dance Gavin Dance- math rock too like CHON and Polyphia would be cool
absolutely love that (arguably?) the best drummer in the freaking world right now, doesn’t feel the need to shred in every demo. imo, dude is the most versatile “metal” drummer of all time. try listening to his mastering time vids..just perfection🥲
The 22 legacy heavy ride has the same problem, such a beautiful crash and wash while still having solid articulation but the bell is super weak in comparison.
I agree with that too. It’s been hell for me trying to find a ride with all three. I will likely pick this new one up when it drops. I’m currently rocking a 22” Vintage Pure Light Ride or a 22” Monophonic depending how I’m feeling. Mono is missing the bell and the vintage is missing the volume.. it’s hard to get it all lol!
The hi-hats are amazing. Bought the Equilibriums to replace K/Z hat combo and would highly recommend them. A little bit pricey but worth every penny if you are looking for a different hi-hat sound.
When Matt made the DW announcement back in September he talked about how/why he switched to a double kick instead of a double pedal. And all the Meinl play through videos for the new album he is using double kick. Did he switch back to single kick double pedal?
@@KaiOwensDrums I am going to go out on a limb and say that isn’t the reason. With all the other drums, cymbals and gear he has 1 bass drum isn’t making that big of a difference. Especially since he has a drum tech and other people to take care of the transporting of his kit as well as the setup and break down of it. Also he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to sacrifice sound quality or a specific sound he is going for just for the ease of having one less drum.
Super funny what Matt said about the depth of his second rack tom. I have a kit that came with 10x8", 12x9", and 14x14" toms, and I also cut my second rack tom down to 8" and re-edged it for better positioning over the kick drum. That one inch makes a HUGE difference in setup flexibility.
Interesting, I never knew much about our drummers kits, looks complicated to assemble so I just stay away LoL But yeah, it's like tonewood and plexis just different gear for different use
Gotta appreciate how stoked Matt is about the finish on this kit tho. It IS GORGEOUS. I like how he is chasing tones with shell construction and non traditional head configuration.
BIG FACTS!!! If leaving a company for finishes, & to leave TAMA for DW who is actually owned by Roland now. I’d chosen Sonor Drums. Those drums are like a rotten apple, pretty on the outside dead on the inside.
The hardest thing for me to find in the 20 years I've been drumming is a ride cymbal thay can be rode like a crash and doesn't sound like a Gong but still has all the qualities a ride should have. Gave up at this point lol. Using a HH Raw Bell Dry Ride.
HARD AGREE! But I do feel like I've been sitting with drummers lately that have options that do all 3 things really well: distinct bell that cuts, nice dynamic ride vibes, and controlled wash as a crash. ALOT of this seems to be in "custom" lathing. There are some new options on the market now that are doing all the things! Check out Matt's signature over at Meinl, for instance!
@@Trisket Well, I'd say mixing can elevate the sound, but also absolutely ruin it. The kit probably would've sounded better un-micd. It sounds horrific here. The cymbals sound like tinny garbage lol
It's not an 'infamous' drum kit! I hate this....infamous has a negative connotation! Adjective: well known for some bad quality or deed. Hitler was infamous, as was Pol Pot.....drum kits can NOT be infamous! Are DW drums bad quality?? Is it a bad deed to play them?? Of course not...SMFH....

I hope you guys will ask Gunnar Olsen, not only because he's an amazing musician, but because he's like a super fun person and cool dude
I appreciate the talking about different parts of the kit but would really, really love the talking be accompanied by playing and letting us hear what the different parts sound like in a little bit of context. More playing throughout, demoing the sounds and grooves, please!
I agree with this. At least hitting each cymbal and drum.
Completely agree. That’s what I was waiting for but it really never happened. Something felt missing.
Matts done how many playthroughs for Meinl of new tracks? You can't hear it there? just saying
@@t3hgir who is Matts Gretzky??
Yeah I was hoping to see garstka play more and just jam out
Everytime I see a new Garstka video I lose my shit, even when he doesn't play a single note it's the most satisfying thing ever. GOAT
Finally! been yearning for a proper series like this just like Rig Rundowns has been for years
Let's gooooo!
So nice to hear him say 22x16 is the perfect size bass drum. A lot of companies running 22x14 and that's fine and well, but agree on the 16" depth. Awesome video! Matt rules!
Would love to see:
Mario Duplantier
Dave Lombardo
Gene Hoglan
Carter Beauford
Art Cruz
Danny Carey (I can dream can't I?)
Ray Luzier
Those OAK toms sound amazing. I have a DW Collectors kit maple and the same sizes on my floor toms DW FOR LIFE
Nice rundown! Awesome questions, Jarrad - looking forward for more.
Been playing coated bottom heads for years, such validation, many success 🙃
As probably thee biggest AAL/Garstka fan, the whole time I felt like I was co-signing everything Garstka was sayin to homeboi next to him lol
I’m so happy about this channel! 🤘🏻🥁✌🏻
❤️
This was lovely! Can't wait for more of these!
Great video! So cool to hear what gear Matt uses!
thanks for watchin'!
Just Subscribed and im a bassist! Nice Episode with Matt
OMG I can’t wait for that signature ride to come out! Really cool vid. Interesting how he used many different woods to create his kit.
I played a hhx ride with that design and yes it really opens things up, not too washy, great stick definition, can’t wait to see this version
Looking forward to this series!!
love the casual conversation, very informative stuff
Very good stuff, great interview.
All I can focus on is how Matt has his back turned to the interviewer the entire time and never makes direct eye contact lol
Matt is awesome. I was waiting for him to start cursing like sailor… and he did 🤣
Really nicely done here, loved every part! Please let us hear those toms and cymbals when described...
AAL
thanks for watchin!
I hear you, but he did play the kit first.
Love The Content Guys!!!!
Brilliant! Someone needs to sample Matt saying "Chaaaa!" rigth at 11:00!

I hope to see a rundown of All Them Witches, and Russian Circles. Two of my favorite drummers.
You're gonna like the next few episodes then. ;)
That would be sick. I think they included Dave Turncrantz on a rig rundown for a different channel a few years ago. That was cool to see.
So right about Rides. Like everyone loves giving a Sweet Ride a good crashing, but the bells on them are just totally lacking.
Totally!
The 22 legacy heavy ride has the same problem, such a beautiful crash and wash while still having solid articulation but the bell is super weak in comparison.
@@PheonixRise666 Out of all the crashable Sabian rides (Groove, Omni or Bash) I think the Legacy Heavy has the strongest bell.

That is why I use a 20” zildjian prototype. Perfect crash and killer bell.
Nice vid dude. Matt is the best! Guna have to get one of those bullet stacks. Or 2. Lol
Awesome vid!
thanks for watching!
this is great. it is hard to get good info on drums, as a non-drummer.
❤️
Jason Rullo from Symphony X would be an awesome addition to this series. Very enjoyable!
14:20 I appreciate that from Matt, feels like he's giving Navene Koperweis some cred.
So now you totally need to try and get Danny Carey... Good luck that would def be a interesting interview and informative on his monster kit
I was jealous for sure
Amazing kit
Dang straight over to the ride in the beginning
When he put his sticks down
I like to put a coated on the snare side of my snares now so it has a little dampening and also the snares don't sound so papery.
That was the most Canadian sounding “garstka” 0:56 lmao gearska
The hi-hats are amazing. Bought the Equilibriums to replace K/Z hat combo and would highly recommend them. A little bit pricey but worth every penny if you are looking for a different hi-hat sound.
FYI, guitar giveaway is a scam. Not sure why a channel focused on drums would giveaway a guitar…..
beautiful

It’s probably just four ease of travel when on tour

Probably just for this show. He uses two kicks on tour.

i'm considering an 8" deep rack tom myself, interested in the tone difference!
That is why I love 7” deep rack toms over a 22 kick.
Great
That royal ebony is stunning
so good!
Nice. I prefer this drum setup For matt
the finish is so sick!
EVEN THE GOAT NEEDS DW PEDALS
My boy Jarrad! Congrats on the first eps.
thank you!!
Was this at the basement in Nashville?
Lovely video but why does the eq/recording here sound like it was recorded with a AOL webcam via 1999
Yep that china does sound amazing.
A discussion about the cotton balls inside of the toms should have been had….
Internally muffling that can act like a 'gate' as they jump up when the drum is hit, then land to mute some of the ring...try it!
inFORMative! ☺️
Equilibrium ride... January guys!!
Interesting, I never knew much about our drummers kits, looks complicated to assemble so I just stay away LoL But yeah, it's like tonewood and plexis just different gear for different use
Yeah it’s not as complicated as you think. Drums in metal bands tend to have more pieces (toms, cymbals) do they look more complicated
I guess he didn't like having two kick drums after all
prolly sucks ass to carry around too
"the dots could make it sound too boxy"
>has the boxiest snare in existence.
Can we get a Brooks Wackerman rundown?!
Actually prefered is tama kits sound. My two cents
Gotta appreciate how stoked Matt is about the finish on this kit tho. It IS GORGEOUS. I like how he is chasing tones with shell construction and non traditional head configuration.

Hey! Love the channel! Please do Elliot Hoffman of Carbomb. Dude has one of the sweetest setups and would love to know more info.
We will def try to connect with him!
Yes 🤘
Drink everytime Matt says y'know
What's up with the mixing? He has a beautiful sounding kit, but here it sounds horrific lol
Micing is everything, kit sounds godly on his other recent playthroughs.

sounds all out of phase or something.
@@TheCrumbleOne Sounds very thin and cheap idk
Cool video, nice interview!
But the snare just sounds horrendous, what the hell?! :D
Drum jesus literally
22:52 the only time he plays the fckng drum...
Great video, wrong pronunciation on his last name but oh well lol
Also, the drums sound like absolute garbage because of the $hitty mixing.
you know, like... , it s like, you know... kinda , like...
Whoever mixed the drums when he was playing should take another pass at it. Sounds not as great as it could be. Respectfully. Much love.
For real! Lol
I think you're being kind. The way it's recorded makes them sound awful. All sounds flat, dead with no tone. I'm sure the real sound is very different
Phase is absolutely not right.
Mahogany floors

top comment!
Matt and NO drumming ?! What? Wy ?!
Intro drum mix was pretty bad lol. That bottom snare mic was way too loud.
Left TAMA. Boo.
Agreed.
Snare sounds puny.
snare sounds like a suspended piece of paper
drum heads are suspended peices of plastic, technically.
mix be slinky

Wow. Someone loves to focus on things that don't fucking matter.
Maybe its just the recording, but those cymbals sounded terrible.
Can we hear some playing some drums and cymbals anything besides nothing but talking
Great interview but the mix here is awful.
That mix is horrible.
I reeeeally like every sosund of the drum execpt for the snare, too dry for my taste
