i really appreciate the mix here, matt's drum sound is always really... particular, but you don't usually get to actually hear what it sounds like mostly natural.
Great vid guys, been needing something to change things up for me! p.s. if you put the video at .75% speed you can see Matt do the lesson a little tipsy.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to get my hand speed, specifically doubles, as fast and proper as he preforms them? Obviously years of practice, but maybe any suggestions on practice pad routines or what I should do on my kit besides just jam every damn time.
Chris Kribs Practice with a metronome. Don’t just randomly hit, control every movement. If you can’t do basic rudiments there is no reason to start with what he is doing. He is doing these because he is bored with basics. So learn your 40 rudiments Tune you drums to pitch. Especially if your music stays in a certain key the whole time. Example 55hz bass drum, 220hz snare. Out of tune is out of tune.
Watch Tommy Igoe's "Great Hands For A Lifetime". If you're only interested in double stroke roll, this video can be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/RT391K42AfA/v-deo.html
It would be great if you could slow it down. Do you remember when you were learning at 1st. You have so many drum teachers going a hundred miles an hour. That's great for guys that have been on the journey for awhile. But you could teach the same thing to buggies if you would slow it down.
Lance Hollum Hey, you can slow it down on your computer and study it. It takes very minimal effort on your part, but doing this helps me IMMENSELY with breaking down and understanding complex playing and helps comprehend better what’s happening. You can do 75%, 50%, and even 25% speed. *select the “settings” or “options” tab under the video menu and select “playback speed” and adjust to your liking. Give it a try! Hope this helps!
SeanMcFarlinTRE i did that too. I’ve watched this video 100x. U definitely can’t pick all this up your first time through lol. U really have to play it and think about it a lot
I would recommend waiting until you can process it without needing to slow it down, which would indicate you are ready to play these properly in the first place.
Anyone else notice that at 2:32 he says "you can also replace the second hit on the snare with the bass drum," but when he demonstrates it he replaces the third snare hit with the bass drum? lol
For these patterns as fills would the 5s and 7s played over 16ths or as tuplets? So the 5 pattern played twice with 3 eight notes played after? Just looking for suggestions on how to incorporate these cool patterns. Similarly with the 5 and 7 groove patterns with the quarter note pulse, is the 5 or 7 part over 16ths/32nds with rests or is it a Gavin Harrison type "override" polymetric groove? Thanks in advance!
All those are great ways to implement these patterns: Fill in the extra space with singles, leave empty space, or play the pattern over a "standard" time signature while alternating the accented notes. IMO the third option is the most challenging as learning how the accent shifts every beat will force you to be able to play a 5 note pattern in 5 different ways. Good luck.
@@PeeDeeJay Cheers for the reply! Love how Matt has such interesting concepts that we can have these discussions and put them into our own playing in our own way, it's cool to be given a tool to use then playing exactly what someone else has taught you note by note
With odd grouping it seems the most usefull to practice them in 4/4 as 16th and 32nd noted and also as triplets and sextuplet, then in quintuplets for example (if it's a grouping of 5). Also maybe try shifting the backbeat or other limbs and make it sound like it's quintuplets (implied metric modulation). I'm sure there's more possibilities but I usually get bored at that point haha.
@@ChrisSheridan295 This is why I almost exclusively watch these types of videos. I love to see a normal discussion(s) today, when there are so many people ready to fight. On nearly every video on UA-cam there are too many idiots with the sole purpose of insulting others and meaningless quarrels, and I'm so tired of that. Btw, I can't wait to sit behind the drums and try to apply one of these tips.
With no doubt in my mind, I believe Matt will go down in history as one of the greatest drummers of the 21st century
Definitely! The man’s an animal lol
Certainly has paved a new path. Much appreciate your art Matt
I agree.
imo he is the greatest of all time.
He even speaks in odd time signatures.
He just said a key thing, a workout that can actually be used in a musical context! 🙌
Matt dressed like a nurse here because he's truly clinical on the drums.
Very funny.
The physical _and_ mental independence and coordination that Matt has behind the kit is just incredible.
An absolute pleasure to hear Matt up close. What an amazing musician and inspiration.
6:26 I love how he missed the slow part, but then he played perfectly the crazy-fast one. Just a reminder that slowly it's trickier
METUL MATTT!!
Matt, after 23 years of playing and teaching this has inspired me. Been feeling a bit dry at the start of the year so thank you!
matt garstka in my favorite drummer on planet earth.
Ye boi

Thanks Matt for showing us these techniques and leveling us up...much appreciated!!
Man this is video is awesome Matt is a legendary drummer and definitely one of my favorite he's up there on my list
The endless beauty of sticking combinations. Nice work!
This was really, really helpful! Awesome way to practice ghost notes, and staying within a groove at the same time. Opened my eyes for some things.
paradiddling right foot and left hand is most useful tip I've seen!
Whole time I'm just thinking "MATT where's your ear protection!?" lol. Love the teaching, some really great insights.
that kit sounds so good
And costs sooo much :(
A good example of Gary Chaffee application concepts.
Dude...this was an eye opener
Hugely inspired by this man !!!!!!!!! God
What a cool playing concept! Great useful staff instead of "another cool lick"!
I can't believe this guy has only 29 yo. What a brilliant musician, damn.
Great info! I’ve written these ideas out and have been working on them for a few weeks now and find these ideas totally useful (and hard to play!).
Who the fuck thumbs downed? We love you Matt! This was a dope video Drum Channel.

Merry Christmas Matt! Great as ever!
Would love to hear a conversation between Matt Garstka and Gavin Harrison!
I would also love that, but I would also invite Jojo Mayer :)
They would talk in odd time signatures
first drummer to actually make this clear to me.... and he did it without even thinking about it, natural teacher
Musicien très solide, avec toute une frappe

Metal Matt back at it again

Mental Balanced Matt!

"In the Pattern Department" sounds like a 20 minute long psychedelic prog song.
I've never heard pycadelic progress rock but it sound perfect
True drummer👍
Awesome.
That pattern at the beginning between the snare and splash... Dam!
Problem is few, very few have doubles left hand ghost speed like Matt. Very very few. And that is a big part.
Woww man! This was new for me.😌🙏
PLAYS LIKE THE BEAST
TALKS LIKE A BEAUTY
So I noticed every time it did a close-up of his ghost notes, the stick hit the exact same spot every single time 👀🤘
Great video!
Killer clip thanks for sharing
stop! I'm still learning para mexer!
awesome, and useful !
Master!
“Yeah, is basically it!”
So many nuggets.

I think he meant the second right hand single stroke

Matt Muthaf**kin Garstka!!!!!
I only take lessons from #metalmatt

Are you Polish Matt?
This has nothing to do with Matt or drums, but I must say that Krakow is one of the most beautiful cities I've seen. Greetings to Poland from Serbia!
