People are saying this console didn't sell well & all this other hoopla, the Dreamcast did phenomenal in its prime, it just lucked out to the PS2 when it launched in 2000.
This isn't entirely true. What happened was Action Replay, a cheat device that was popular on cartridge based systems, released a demo disc as a free item with the purchase of a particular issue of a particular video game magazine. In order for a user to be able to enter cheats the disc hijacked the bootloader. But it didn't reinject the bootloader during loading the game, and so it didn't check that the disc swapped to after loading the cheat disc was an official disc. So people were able to burn specially modified discs (since the Dreamcast GDI discs used a spiral track rather than tracks shaped as multiple concentric circles where the outer rings had more space between the pits and grooves they were able to fit about 1GB of data on each disc rather than the 600MB to 700MB of common CD-ROMs, but this meant that you couldn't make duplications of GDIs on a PC CD-R burner since the track list would have the data in the wrong sectors, so GDIs copied to CD-Rs needed their track listing table to be altered) and just put those in after loading the Action Replay disc without entering any cheats. This also allowed users to play discs from other regions, as long as there wasn't some special BIOS function needed for the game to function.
i played this console for the first time ever earlier. while i didnt get to play it long, i cant stop thinking about it. the cute startup, the sound effects, the dancing 3d icons, everything. the icons remind me of clay in a way. love this console so much
We need to start prefreaceing that with best Nostalgic console because it doesn't have as many features as modern consoles and when you tell everyone it's the best thing ever people willraise their eyebrows at you
1:56 huh. I've owned a Dreamcast for several years and didn't know it was SUPPOSED to stay at the menu after inserting a disc. For some reason, my original system would just immediately run the game. I got a new system from eBay and nearly had a heart attack when it did this 😂.
This menu appears when you boot the system without a disc loaded or the lid is open (or if your lid detection switch is malfunctioning). This is where you set the datetime and can format the VMUs or copy files. This isn't a secret menu. The system you got had the BIOS set to not automatically load a disc when the system is turned on.
There actually is an alternate menu, but you need a VMU with a Puyo Puyo Fever savegame on it. You just press start and you get a 3D "liquid" menu variant that allows you to rotate it on a 3 axes.
Really I picked one up on Amazon for 70-something dollars Though it didn't come with a vmu and I had to buy two but those go for pretty cheap if u look in the right place
guitarjd21 I agree! If only the Dreamcast sold much better units, it would've lasted much longer like the PS2 did. We also could've even had the Dreamcast 2 as well as Shenmue 3 back then (if only both of these games sold much better and are not even expensive, and we also could've had the Dreamcast and maybe PS2, GameCube, and PC versions of Shenmue 2 released in the US).
So, I have a plugin for Discord that changes the sounds, right. So, I changed them to Dreamcast BIOS sounds a long time ago, and I somehow forgot about that when I started playing this video. So, I accidentally gave myself a little mini-anxiety attack when you started moving through the menu lol
This is easily the most aesthetically pleasing system I’ve seen
I like ur pfp
I agree, that menu has chill vibes
Gamecube aesthetic was crazy too
And PS2
Wii U *crying in the corner*

@@mjverostek1278 My dad says that digital piracy is no being deal but clearly he didn't pay attention to this thing
I never had a Dreamcast and am younger than the console, but somehow this brings me nostalgic and feel aesthetic vibes
Same!
Same.

This was my first console. I remember getting this for Christmas back in 2000. Ahh, good memories.
Oh wow a bit too late until the consoles lifespan there buddy.
@@LonelyDiggers it did release in 1999 (late 1998 in some countries i believe), so it was both early and late

The little clock aka settings is pretty cute ⏰

I wonder if someone could set the year as far back as 1900 or forward to 2099, to possibly roll over to 2100?

Dreamcast is the embodiment of vaporwave aesthetic.
Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo GameCube had the best menus of that console generation.
Takes me back to Christmas 2000 when I first got the Dreamcast. The menu looks pretty great.
