Another space-saving tip is to lift your furniture up from the floor.
I installed legs on my Ikea sofa and tv stand so I don't have any big furniture touch the floor.
Mounting wall shelves can also save a lot of space.
You can surprisingly do a lot with vertical space especially living in small apartments.

Lofts have a higher ceiling than apartments and are actually really spacious cause of their industrial use and architecture... if your apartment is smaller than his it’s prabably a studio and not really loft.

Ya well Ballard Designs is an upscale pricey catalog, but you can get
some great ideas and if you troll the thrift stores you might happen
upon something like this or DIY with some mirror squares and
      plywood. There's always a solution.

I'm from NYC. I used to live in Brooklyn, then Queens, and then Harlem. I moved to LA two years ago and I miss it. I've always lived in a small apartment. Maybe a positive is that a small apartment forces you to go out more because you have less space to move around at home.

  • @canigetanemail
    @canigetanemail 4 роки тому +6

    Three suggestions:
    1. Dresser - you can fit a slim low profile one (e.g. Ikea Malm / Kullen) in front of the window or on the floor of your "walk in" closet. If in front of window, a plant / flowers + some candles on top = simple feature. Could even go for a mirrored dresser.
    2. Utensils - can have more than 2. Your cupboards have unused internal height space. Get a plate rack (Ikea Nyplockad £2) for the bottom shelf & stand your plates up. Get stacking cups. Voila.
    3. Dining for more than 2 - get one of those swanky console tables that expand to seat up to 8 or 10 people etc. Or get a fold down table that flips down from the wall but looks like art the rest of the time.

My 20 year old daughter is living in Denver in a tiny studio with no kitchen as it's private student housing. We created a "kitchen" out of a kitchen island on casters, folding table and chairs meant for outside use, plus one appliance shelf. She has a full size bed, dresser/TV stand, desk and even a small sectional sofa that turns into a bed. Thank goodness for IKEA for functional, clever, cost effective products. Love your choices in your space, especially that mirror!

4 years ago we moved from a huge Florida home to a 1 bedroom pre war apt in NYC. It was the best experience we've ever had. We got rid of so much junk and only kept 4 of each in the kitchen. The apt was a walk up in 83rd st between Lexington and Park Ave. We got it for a great deal compared to other apts around. Now we live in North Carolina and miss our NYC apt every day!! This is a great video. Thank you for showing things that could go wrong with such candor and humor. I was raised in the Bronx and lived in Manhattan for 5 years before moving to the West Coast and now, abroad. The minimalist life has been key to my survival. I truly appreciate the Swedish and Japanese ways of being - having “just enough”. I’ve even been able to reduce my wardrobe while maintaining my style with a capsule wardrobe. Your video definitely made me a bit homesick. Nothing compares to the NYC Skyline. All the best to you!

Enough to fit a foldout cot barely. Lol. It was seriously the best three months of my life! I’ve never been more broke and happy in my life. 100% my style- mirrors, really big plats, soft and stylish carpet, very interesting and tasteful art works, cool ideas like the bicycle on the wall, great splashes of colour like the bronze- yellow sofa, very minimalistic but yet enough to have everything, that is needed. Also loads of good ideas to reduce space like the wardrobe bed or the hangig bicycle (possibilities, that are present for it, are used).
Tiny appartments are so cozy, when professionally furnished. Great work!!!

    Great video. Love your apartment!
We (family of 5 plus 2 small dogs) lived in a 1-bedroom, 950 sq ft condo in the Chicagoland area; plenty of room! Our kids often had sleepovers so sometimes we had 7-8 kids overnight! I love to cook so my table was expandable and all of our furniture served multi purposes! Not ideal for everyone but for us, it was cozy, intimate, fun and just right!!!
We live in a house now but loved our small condo days!!! So many good memories. 😊

Erick I love your place, it reminds me of my place when I live in Greenwich Village ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unquestionably, I also had a Murphy bed however, when the bed was put away I glued a large mirror where your handles are & it made my living quarters appear larger. Moreover, my coffee table had multiple heights therefore, I could use it as a coffee table, desk, or dinning table; I got it at IKEA. My kitchen was also very small but the advantage was that mine was in a wide long closet like, against one wall with folding doors to access the full kitchen. Lastly, what I truly loved about my apartment was that I was in the garden level, where french doors lead to the backyard where I had a waterfall, sitting area, plus a grill. Furthermore, during the summer it was a sweet area to get away from the rest of the world, or just read a book.

You can still sleep super comfortable and fold it out of the way giving you back that extra space. I really love the Murphy Beds with folding desk attachments . They serve two purposes to make life in a small space much more comfortable.

2:46 it’s amazing how different cultures have different ideas about having a mirror next to a bed. It’s supposed to be bad feng shui to have a reflective object next to a bed as it is believed that the mirror “sucks the energy out of you.” I personally don’t believe it but I’ve had a roommate comment on it and it made me think about how things are so different across cultures.

I love how your apartment looks! Especially the plants, are they real or fake? and what kind of plant are they, especially the one next to the bed? I love plants 😂 I once lived in an apartment the size of your living space with the kitchen in there too, it was so cramped and there was no murphy bed, could hardly move in it!

i think the plants on the video are called snake plants 👀

    • @BlakeHemmel
      @BlakeHemmel 6 років тому +11

They're fake with the exception of the short one by the mirror, which is a snake plant, also known as mother-in-law's tongue. It's a good indoor plant that only needs to be watered once a month and improves air quality quite a bit. They're great for apartments.

Model boys always have great decorating tips.
I used to live in the very expensive resort town of Sedona, Arizona, USA when only minimum wage jobs were available. I was also a college student. One rental was such a tiny studio, my bed was pretty much IN the kitchen. Weirdest part was being able to get things out of my frig without having to get out of bed. Took time for me to learn to sleep next to it, with the motor going on & off constantly.
It was mostly one room, with small WC & shower in closet size space. But it had two large closets. One I converted into an office. I used a bookshelf on one side of my bed to separate a living room portion. I used a lazy Susan to turn my TV from facing my bed to facing my sofa, as needed.
I used wall mounted artwork (mounted to hinged doors) that I attached medicine cabinet shelving behind for additional storage. Of course, making certain they were well-secured, LOL. Seems like a small space addition, but it was surprising on how helpful & handy they were for storage options.
Everything was double duty. This place had a covered outside entrance, which I turned into another living space.
I had begun adult life renting in San Francisco and developed excellent spatial living skills.
Thanks for the tiny space tips.

I have to agree with you on a few of your points. The murphy bed is a total game changer. As a grandma, I used the "cabinet" version of the same thing, so it's like a console the huge TV sits on, but can be opened up and pulled out for a queen size bed. The large mirror helps as well. With a kitchen remodel that I hope will be done soon, I built a bench under the windows that can double as a bed. When I was young, I had a few apartments similar to yours, and there's nothing wrong with it for a single person. Looks good!

Yo doesn't this dude pay like $2400 for this place too? For people looking to save money or just spend less try to find a room mate or two. The Murphy bed is cool but if you're handy and have access to some power tools you can build your own loft bed for like $100 then just put your desk under your bed. Lastly, $700 for a mirror? People are in and out of NYC apartments all the time, check for lightly used shit on Craigslist and be patient. You'll find huge discounts on stuff for your apartment. Nearly all the stuff in my apartment was used before I got it and it still looks really nice

Maybe he wanted to pay $700 for the mirror. Just because you wanted used stuff doesn't mean everyone does. I had a co-worker to crticize me because I paid a lot for two floor lamps. It's my money and I get to spend it like I chose

I live in a 250 sq ft condo in Downtown Portland and love it. The location is ridiculously convenient and full of energy and the space is just large enough to have everything I need. I went for a bunk futon + bed combo rather than a murphy bed and so far, it’s been fantastic!
