Architect’s Micro Studio Apartment

- In this video, we tour the incredible 28sqm (301sqft) apartment of architect Douglas Wan. The Melbourne apartment was originally constructed in the 1950's as housing for nurses. It’s now been completely reimagined for modern times and transformed into a clever small studio.

For Douglas, this was an opportunity to develop a small living space that would perfectly fit his needs and lifestyle. Attracted to simple living and a self described monastic lifestyle, he wanted to create a place where he could be a part of the city, yet also retreat from it. He ventured to carry out an architectural experiment and find out what was possible in his own small home.

The result is a micro apartment which is as clever as it is simple. One which utilises the entire space, while remaining open and light. It’s rustic history is celebrated, yet also contrasted with the modern elements. Most importantly, it’s a wonderful home.

So well planned,
Agreed 🔥 those apartments and mansions give you perspective on what can be done when no budget is really present and these tiny houses show you creative ways of seeing the space you design and help you create solutions for problems you wouldn't normally consider as a problem but never think if it could be done better to open up a space
For sure!
@@Mesrt99 You got that right. I love watching these Shows and know that clutter can create stress and less clutter is less mess.

Tom Lever I don’t know how loud you guys speak but that’s kinda how I see majority of people speak at. Maybe the other guy being really quiet made you feel that way.

Me too. I live on the city edge of a Swiss city, 10 Min by bus or tram to the city centre, but still in a quiet place at the edge. It works for me (I am in a 3 BR apartment alone).
Couldn't agree more! As he states a quasi-monastic way of living...
And also lead a monastic life.
Same. I do best alone so I need somewhere I can find solitude. But it helps my anxiety knowing that I'm not totally alone. And that theres always somewhere to go or something to do, if I so choose. You can really feel the energy and life around you and that's comforting to me. Like he said theres a community aspect of being part of a bigger society

This young architect has all my admiration. He has a deep sense of awareness of his inner and outside world. He has successfully created a space in his image; it has character, it is functional, and minimalist. Bravo. :-)
His ample knowledge of psychology and philosophy and the way he incorporates it into his architectonic designs is just amazing. Also his calmness and eloquence ... he must be swamped with job offers after this video :)

I thought the same thing. My belief is he reads a lot and his use of words like monastic tells me he's into spiritual exploration and discovery which is an essential part of minimalism living. You dispense with the fluff and keep the things that are important, like the monks. That doesn't mean he doesn't indulge once in a while as evident by the two bags of chips (or crisps) in the cabinet.

9:35 I really like what he said here. Like imagine normally tiny houses ‘prepared’ for having several guests would have identical chairs hidden away and you’d have to move a lot of things around to pull them out. I like how he’s honest like “Yeah the bed stays out most of the time”, cause many tiny houses look really cool and minimalistic but you have to pull the bed in and out every night to have a living room and it doesn’t seem like much when just seeing a video, but I’d imagine it would get tiresome to have to do that every day. So yeah, it’s nice to see a tiny space like this one and his take on “People are more adaptable than things”.
ok this guy just shared so many valuable concepts about architecture in 13 minutes! Thank you, Douglas!
The way this dude explain things, i feel like i just watched a thesis presentation

@@madabouthollyoaks411 Ah, I'm sure he holds a genuine interest in the craft, but as an introvert I'm very easily annoyed by people exaggerating their verbal expression for the sake of clarity. The fake extra enthusiasm comes off as fake interest. The house owner shows that it is not necessary to talk like that to show your passion on a base level, but I'm sure it is an important tool for having mass-appeal used by the host, after all he has to guide the conversation and compensate anything he feels that wasn't explicit enough for the average audience.

He's actually so smart. All the architecture language and pronunciation of thoughts are admirable, especially when he said the "alcove for your shoes"
Bruh when he said that I tapped out
i thought so too.
The alcove for the shoes is an Asian thing. Asian people always leave their footwear before entering a house. They do this because they believe that the outside is dirty while the inside is clean, and they shouldn't be mixed. Point is, I believe that the alcove for the shoes just came to him instinctively because he's Asian.
So, yeah, he really did communicate well architecturally. Damn, his design is so sharp and astounding!

@@roicipriano6016 Way to minimize a brilliantly executed design to a stupid pigeon-holing racialist "must be simply cause he's asian" statement. So dumb.
Not everyone would design it so flawlessly...I'm sure you missed it but he said that was a practicality thing due to the plumbing fixtures, it's very hard to hear. Architects think of solutions to problems, and anyone designing such a tiny space would have an issue with shoe storage/a welcome mat. It's so easy to say "That's the obvious thing to do" when design is done well, but it takes actual vision to think of new solutions, not just asian blood.
