    This is one of my all time favourite movies! It is a perfect example of unconditional love. Also, the Mary/Howard plot point was to show the audience that although the memories are erased, the emotion still stays. Real love never truly leaves you.

      My take was, they wanted to erase their memories to avoid the pain of loss. But without those memories, they are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. So even though the memories bring you pain, they are necessary for growth

      You guys clearly haven't seen him in his most recent project, Kidding. It first aired some years ago and I think it got cancelled. It's amazing. It got a lot of criticism because people thought it was a kid's show. But it's about a sad and subdued man who makes a kid's show. It's truly a tragic story and he delivers it flawlessly ❤ Never felt so moved by a Jim Carrey's performance.

    I always interpreted the ending as they’ve repeated this cycle many times of erasing eachother and finding eachother again. No matter how epically they crash and burn or how hard they try to forget eachother, a piece of their souls always remember and always come back to eachother to do it all again knowing that it might end badly. This time with the awareness they have you wonder if they might finally fix their mistakes and make it work but either way their love is so strong that they always choose it despite the pain. 😢

    • @iulia.bianca.b
      @iulia.bianca.b 6 місяців тому +9

      There's no evidence of them having done this multiple times. And that leaves room for the theory that having learned about it, and what they really wanted to say to each other, even the hurtful things, there might be a good chance that they'll do it differently this time around, and that they'll work on their flaws and mistakes. That it will work out this time. It's a more hopeful take.

      @@iulia.bianca.b there definitely is evidence that it could’ve happened more than once and many people share this theory. Maybe give the movie a rewatch. Also I enjoy tragic love stories so a hopeful ending is not necessary but I still think my take was quite hopeful anyways

    "It's something you would consent to, but then forget you consented to. Is it ethical? Is it not? I don't know."
    Kinda dark, but similar concerns have been raised in the real world about electroconvulsive therapy aka "shock therapy." It causes amnesia, usually regarding right around the time the procedure happens, but sometimes extending months or years prior. Some psychologists and experts on biomedical ethics argue that this makes it difficult or impossible to actually consent to the procedure. Signing something, affirming "yes, I consent to this," etc are of dubious value when after the fact, someone who has lost memory of that part of them says "wait I didn't want to do that wtf did you do to me."

    This is one of my favorite movies ever. the Mary/Howard plot point was to show the audience that erasing memories doesn't solve everything. There's still an impression left. Just like how Joel and Clementine found each other again even after Joel erased his memories. Charlie Kaufman's writing and Michel Gondry's directing really both worked so well together in this. This was a more dramatic role for Jim Carey. It's one of those movies that's stuck with me ever since I watched it.

    What I like most about this movie is that the sci fi is just the set up. It doesn't entirely interfere with the story. It's not about how cool the idea of mind erasure is as a scientific concept, but it's just an excuse to get into Joel's mind and figure out who this guy is and what he's like. We see very little of Clementine or any other character outside of Joel's perception.
    This might be the most honest movie ever made because it's not pretending that any of the events portrayed in it are factual or actually happened in the way we're seeing them. They're all from Joel's romanticized perspective. The good parts of the relationship could be just as exaggerated as when the relationship goes south. We never see things from Clementine's perspective, but it's done well enough that we understand both why Joel loves her and they ultimately drive each other crazy. They're drawn to each other because they exhibit traits that the other one wishes they had. Clem is outgoing, spontaneous and a free spirit. Joel is quiet, thoughtful and reserved. Opposites attract, I guess.
    I knew a girl like Clementine (or Joel's perception of her) and I was a Joel. I'd just gone through a bad breakup with a girl and the film helped me to deal with a lot of things I was going through. It helped me to see 2 flawed people and where I wasn't right for her and she wasn't right for me, no matter how much I wanted things to work out.
    Some of Joel's outbursts still make me cringe because I see myself in him and wishing I hadn't said some of the things I did when I was a stupid young man who didn't know any better. It was my first serious relationship and I didn't know what I was doing. For me, the sci fi is just a set up so we can see all the very human and identifiable behaviours that people can have in a relationship. I find people who haven't been through this or don't identify with the characters find the movie boring and don't get it. I don't know that it's a movie for everyone. I felt every one of their lines and I quite literally almost said verbatim those words Jim Carrey does on the ice when they're laying there about him being happy.
    But again, if you're not a Joel, his behaviour can come off as needy and pathetic. I'm sure it would to a lot of women, actually, not just men. I love this movie because it reminds me that I'm still human.

    if you haven’t watching it already, y’all should watch the movie Land of the Lost. the one with Will Ferrell. I feel like you’d really enjoy it !

    I saw this great movie on the airplane when I was 23 (yeah when "nobody likes you when you're 23" -cit.) after many disappointments in friendships but still. I remember it as the movie that left me with the biggest void.

    I probably should watch this again before I watch the reaction. I only have seen it once and it was not long after it came out. I remember the premise but I have a feeling I'm not going to remember a lot of the plot.
    Oh well. It's not on any of the platforms I currently have subs to, and I'm not going to buy it. 🤷‍♀️

    Everyone loves this movie but me. I hate the 'manic pixie dream girl' trope so much. I find it so juvenile. But I can admit it's one of the best movies that does that trope

    • @seagullcrimes
      @seagullcrimes 3 місяці тому +2

      I think that part of the point is that Clementine is sort of a commentary on that trope, maybe a deconstruction of it. Joel sees her like that toward the beginning of their relationship, but her complexity is revealed as the story goes on. She even addresses that perception of herself in the bookstore memory.
