It's funny to see how many people struggle not to say Zesty was right when agreeing with him.
I actually do agree with a lot of his points, the issue is that even saying his name can sometimes not end well…
@@cipherlock The Voldemort of TF2bers.
Once you say he's right, you become yet another little Hitler adding to the volume of WE AGREE when he speaks.
@@cipherlockYeah.... Like, do NOT get me wrong. I greatly dislike his political opinions. I'm pretty much the opposite of him in that area.
But, as far as his TF2 opinions go... he's right about a lot of things.... And hey, I think Valve agreed somewhat too. Since the last Winter case wasn't "Oops, All Christmas Hats!"
@@cipherlock Just say it? if people got a problem with that that's on them.
I know it's asking a lot from people on the internet, but it's really not that hard to be NUANCED about things and people. As Databrain mentioned above, Zesty may be pretty awful as a person (at least in MY eyes), but TF2 wise... He makes A LOT of solid points. And I believe it's actually a great thing that we do have a fairly high-profile TF2 youtuber who's there to point out the wrong things about a game loved by many. Just because you criticize something doesn't mean you hate it. In fact... It usually proves you care a lot, and wish to see improvements.
Valve taking the maximalist laissez faire approach wouldn't be such a problem if they also made it easy to 'disable' (not render) the effects, either through the console or the advanced options. In an ideal world the same should be possible for warpaints.
That’s not a bad idea, I’ve heard that being thrown around and I’m all for that to be a new setting!
Readability is very important. Orange Pyro on Blue Team is not readable at all.
And cosmetics just everybody stock looking exept weapon
would love to "unusual filter" effects so that I see only the ones I like
as for warpaints, mat_dxlevel 81
all you really lose is sheen visibility and some readability
but you dont see warpaints, experience 30% FPS boost and the fisheye effect on the sniper rifle is gone
you wonder why so many people who play competitively prefer dxlevel 81 over anything else
almost every 100 player tf2 server disables cosmetics by default, that includes hats, miscs, war paints and most unusual effects
I have one unusual hat. It has the Aces High effect on it. No neon rainbow vomit, no pumpins circling your head, just some playing cards. I love it.
Or youre just broke to afford better one 🤭😂🤣🤣
@@DellConagher1Nah, I personally have multiple unusual effects, some very flashy and I still have aces high on multiple hats. It's a very simple effect that works on a lot of cosmetic loadouts. It also just fits the general aesthetics of team fortress maybe the most out of any unusual currently in the game (the colours are not that offensive to the eye, the faces of the card are drawn in the style of the game and the concept itself just fits, with the mercs probably doing things like playing cards in between missions) other than dead president. It also goes very well with the high roller's decorated weapons.
@@JOHN-wm2on ight
Unusuals aren't killing TF2, idiots who buy them are making TF2 a frankenstein, unusuals are just the bolts in that frankenstein.
I don't care about effects because I will never unbox them / spend money on it. In the end of the day Valve just refuses to do active moderation to stop bots and that is why it is so hard to find a playable game without any bots :/
Giving them money for them doing NOTHING is not the right thing as the consumer
As a warpaint creator that got in for the first time last summer, it causes me great pain seeing 70+ unusuals a year and only 10 warpaints.
Istg if Valve forgets to add warpaints for the summer…
Remember one summer when Valve decided to add SEVEN different recolors of the same firework effect?
There’s a few unusuals on the workshop with like 10-12 variants…
@@cipherlock It's a massacre
Valve's qc is so bad that I assume they just play darts to decide, except they got drunk, spun around a few times and then break a window because it turns out the dart board is behind them and they didn't notice
ngl i think the real problem is the people that spin around and kill everyone instantly
Oh absolutely, that's definitely the primary issue, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't recognize other problems in TF2.
@@cipherlock but your video's title is Unusuals are THE problem. Not 'unusuals are a problem'.
@@J11reddman Clickbait**
The advanced effects are the problem, people gotta simplify their effects again. Also valve has to add like 3-5 effects max oer update (and not add taunt effects at all cuz they're pointless)
Noone has liked taunt effects much to begin with, they're legit just traded by traders and that's it. Taunts are like 0.0001 seconds of a 20 minute match, why would I ever care how it glows if it costs more than like $5.00.
I think the biggest issue with Unusual effects is the fact that too many variants get added just because. I just wish Valve would be 1 "main variant" and then not use the other ones.
Or just paintable effect
or like how some cosmetics have multiple styles.. allow for effects to do the same
like combine all the orange/green/purple effects into one, and give it 3 styles
The thing is they're cool and all but I'm NEVER going to spend disposable income on a 40+ do last hat, never.
Especially when the main game (casual) isn't even playable
It's playable now, but still no @@diba9281
Without cosmetics, TF2 would of died years ago. They are an necessary evil.
+1 agree here
Not the tf2 community gaslighting themselves into thinking community created items are the problem when lazy valve hasn't made a single actual update and there is still bots 🤦♂
i have a few unusuals, 2 low tier and one high tier. honestly they could keep adding them. just less effects in a case and no recolors of the same effect or make them a option like how you can move the effect on a hat also make them less rare, to where the FOMO isnt as bad
I would stop adding Unusual effects and I would redesign effects Like Nuts and bolts, massed flied or orbiting planets (and let people who own those hats pick their style)
3:00 that clip was crazy
While pretty much all unusual effects aren’t good nowadays, I wouldn't say that they are ruining the game, more they’re just one part of the game that needs to be fixed. Maybe by making some more simple unusual effects instead of the ones that have tons of moving parts in them? I dunno, all the unusual s that I wore were from before end of the line
That’s definitely a point I should’ve made, that most people wear only older effects anyways unless their new hat is crazy expensive, thanks for bringing that up!
i still scream when i unbox unusuals lol
Yea and a lot of unusuals look really out of place with 99% of hats
Originally I was knowledgeable on unusual effects but my god there is so many at this point to even remember all of them. On top of having unusual taunts and don't even get me started on war paints.
I would of preferred that they had the main pool of effects that was capped and then a separate pool for certain holidays with like 1-3 different variants for that crate.
its very unusual to hear this take.
Controversial take: I think during Full Moon, the Unusual effect drop pool changes to a handful of random Halloween effects from years gone by (Not like Spellbound or anything, just the "modern" ones).
Unusual effects used to be unique (visually) and memorable. I know what Burning Flames and Aces High look like. They're simple, unique, and look fitting for the game, even for an unusual effect. I can't say that about the effects of recent cases, they're almost all neon vomit, horns, tentacles, or just uninspired garbage.
What an unusual problem.
I'm not the target audience for this. I think unusuals are tacky noisy and ugly. I could not care less when valve adds another effect onto the apparently over 700 large pile of effects that all look the same. In my opinion they only exists for people to either show of that they've spent money on the game or for traders or gambling addicts. I do agree that valve shouldn't add too many of them each update but at this point its too little too late. They're never gonna be special again. The reason burning team captain is remembered and revered is because there wasn't this many hats or this many unusual effects. The sheer number of them devalues the already existing ones too.
Loved the video, but I'll be honest, what motivated me to like and subscribe was that morbius hud
Incredible video, great analysis on the current situation. Ive always thought that Valve should make an item that treat's hat unusual effects so you can put the effect on whatever hat/taunt you want. I believe that if not it makes players think of the profits instead of actually using the effect.
Lmfao being kicked after missing half your clip on the heavy
Speaking as someone that recently came back to the game after a long time away, I really like the way they do unusual effects now. I hadn’t been playing at all during the time when they introduced cases and limited effects. I think that it’s cool that so many hats can never be opened again, but it’s also possible to hunt down these specific effects if you want to, keep the market from getting over saturated
I completely get where you’re coming from. It has to be special for the user otherwise it’s not special at all when the market is over saturated.
I think you’ll agree with me on this:
If you saw every effect as just an image with no name, you could probably name every effect gen 1-3, robo, eotl, and halloween up to 2018. There are only a few effects after that which catch your eye and are well-known.
Everything else is just not as memorable, and I think that problem stems from the over-saturation of color variants and effects that (as you said) perform with a low approval rating from the community.
It’s sad really, I want that hype to be brought back when someone would unbox a god-tier hat like the Anti-Freeze Hong Kong Cone that was unboxed a few days ago.
As someone who pockets unusuals peoples , i can relate to this X_x
I muted and unmuted the video to make the mute icon not be a muted icon and it sounded like
Unusuals are TF2
seeing you get accused of cheating while missing 10 shots at 5:00 is hilraious
Opinions exist thats why they are added
Unusuals were a mistake from the beginning
Great video cipher!

did this guy get denied a heal from 2 hp bc no unusual?
relatable
god damn how many huds do you use
the race font and tf2 font/hand drawn art style ones are sick
I typically change my hud each week for variety, the ones I've stuck to the most are the Morbius and Weirdcore HUDs.
I'm actually proud of the fact that despite having the game for 17 years I haven't gone out of my way to get an unusual effect and haven't paid enough crates to get one
"An absolute flood of added items" is a valid concern imo because the thing it did to me is that I do not remember the names or looks of any effects added over the last 7 years.
Same argument can be applied to cosmetic cases and even maps sometimes, I genuinely don't feel like bothering to remember them because it's just bloat to me now.
There is no novelty, it's just more of the same thing now and I'm feeling really bored of the entire thing. I just couldn't care because it's not special anymore.
TF2 is its current state is like a planet-spaceship that existed for thousands of years and it's full of everything in an utterly disorganized mess.
Hell I don't think I'd even get excited about "more stuff to do" because not even the contracts or MvM missions are doing it for me now.
I spent over 10 years following everything about this game and the thing I would love to see the most is for it to be better.
There are exploits that need fixing, there are weapons that need rebalancing, there are maps that need adjustments.
It's becoming increasingly hard to tolerate the archaicness and the jank of the Source engine experience.
If I could suggest a way to improve the item system then it's to have a better in-game compendium.
A way to graphically visualize everything there is in this game would be an improvement.
The general experience could have been smoothened out, it's so damn sluggish.
So much of this game lives in spite of its age, not because of it. I'm tired.
A panoramic overhaul would breathe so much new life into it.
It takes a lot to uncover the beauty behind that clutter.
tf2 is a glorified gacha game on life support.
I have a little theory that Valve employees are actually the ones who made these Unusual effects and poses as community made by creating Steam accounts to look like a normal workshop creator. Then they just vote on themselves and with the help of insiders to get their effects chosen and make more money for themselves. I have no proof but if someone can check it out it would helpful.
That is SUCH a wild theory lmao, that would be such a conspiracy! But no, I can verify that Valve puts like no work into the updates, all the content is actually from community members.
Cant wait to see that mod, i really like how the community overhauls the game
It should hopefully be released in a few weeks, in the last stages of it now.
@@cipherlock Would you pursue it as officially being added to game? As by publishing it to workshop?
I’ll publish it to the workshop to bring attention to the actual mod which will be on Gamebanana, but I very very much doubt Valve would add it. There are some pretty drastic changes in it, and Valve hates going back and changing past content, in case players enjoy how it currently looks, which is fair. This is more of a passion project and one I use myself.
@@cipherlock Lol I don't expect valve to add it, too much copium for me personally. I just want to download the mod and congratulate you for making it.
Glad I never bought into unusual, always thought they took away from both the actual cosmetic and the appearance of the Mercs.
i hate the endless tide of new unusuals because they cause file bloat that most players will NEVER ever see.
we need a 20 variant effect this summer
bro u really made my zapped unus effect just to roast it publically dud it was my first unbox
I still have very mixed feelings about it… I wish Valve had accepted one of my other effects that I’d spent much more time on…
5:00 bro getting votekicked for "cheating" is crazy
This is the time to hold on to the og effects it will be expensive in the future
I’m not sure about that. Unlike these new ones, the og effects aren’t limited to one specific case or season, you can unbox them at any time, so they wouldn’t become rarer over time.
I can't point to a single person who thinks that warpaints aren't in the same state as unusual effects.
Good video and i need to ask this question-- Whats the Mod that you have that replaces pyros airblast for a punch ;;w;; i know that theres more important stuff but i need it
It's a Pyro Ultrakill Airblast mod, somewhere on Gamebanana!
@@cipherlock THANK YOUU i found it :DDD tytyty

Waltuh, put your crossbow away waltuh
When i made the decision of collecting unusual merc's mohawk, i always look at the gen 1 to 3 since new effects can't be on older hat like this one. The only exception i made was the effects from Scream Fortress VIII. Which ironically enough was the last time Valve, let new effects be obtainable in crates. Those olders effects are still praise at a very high price. Like a mercs mohawk with a Scream Fortress VI effects at almost 2k. It come to the point where copycat are let through to make quick bucks. In the end, the blame is more on Valve than anyone else.
The main reason I don't care about unusuals is that I'll never be able to afford the one I want. If Valve stops adding effects outright, the supply of each individual unusual will rise making them cheaper.
We can't do anything about the unusuals, it's in Valve's court as to what happens in their own games.
never been a fan of unusuals and i have always thought about having an option that let me disable them in general, because as minute as they seem, they do affect performance, hats also doing the same
I’m not watching the video but I use wanna share with you guys that today I saw a bot with an unusual hat
did I spot a parry punch for pyro's airblast in that background gameplay...
What an unusual problem, that is!
LOOK GARY THERE I AM!!!
True and real though. I'd say the primary factor in the bloat of unusual effects is Valve essentially giving up on the game post-JI (or MYM, depending on where you draw the line). We've gone from proper updates to seasonal case drops three times a year - like you said w/ FOMO, there's no reason to _not_ add 20 effects per case when they'll be locked to said case after its respective event is over anyways.
Older effects had context to their inclusions and were actually scarce. Nowadays it's just bargain bin nebula #3453. I'm on the same page when it comes to "I might as well make good effects, as to ever so slightly drown out the garbage when Eric plays bingo with item submissions," but man if it isn't demotivating seeing each update's effects being composed of 90% uncurated garbo.
you have angered the traders
womp womp
market oversaturation is a perfectly natural phenomena and can happen regardless of product's quality.
there isn't much that can be (or should be) done about it on the community part, so stop worrying about and just continue making good stuff.
if there is a decline of interest in unusuals that is worth worrying about in the long run, some action will be taken, eventually. most likely the same one that hit warpaints. as in, severe reduction of the rate at which they're introduced.
1. Unusual effects dont feel special anymore becasue there is lika a billion of them ingame.
2. Most of them have a Christams or Hallowen theme to them becasue thats all we getting for years now. Most of the effects just blend into a mash of either pumkins, candycorn, bats or christmas trees, polar lights. All preaty genereic that is forgetabel after the updates over.
3. This ones least importent, but its worth a mention. Unusual effects do downgrade the game perfromance. Not by a lot,but it is a thing for people with lower end systems. Thats why Im advocating for a cosmetic on/off button for years now.
Just realized I had met you in a 2fort match (sapped unusual hat creator thingy)
nuh uh, I'm a tf2 content creator, I have never played the game before
Another issue with unusual effects for me is.... Look, I'll NEVER be able to unbox any of these fancy new effects.
So, it makes me not care for them.
Like... the only unusual I've unboxed outside of glitches and 2 war paints, and an odd amount of taunts. Was the football helmet for Demo with.... The flies around it....
Yeah.... I didn't have good luck with hats....
But anyway. I do admit. New KS effects. And new warpaint unusuals could be interesting....
They need to focus on adding new weapons, thats the only thing that will keep the gameplay truly fresh. But i also get why they dont, they are afraid of changing the meta too much and having to fix it
I remember when unusuals were impressive and had a wow factor to them, now they're a dime a dozen, not special and somewhat tacky.
i think they are alr, the problem is they feel like the major part of any update, which is valve's problem, not the unusual's. i personally currently have only 1 hat with ominous stare and i think its gorgeous (all doe im soon gonna be swapping it for a pumpkin moon). i think what unusuals need is to be more grounded and less ,,in your face" if that makes sense, like those rainbow spirals or fireworks. i think overall, the problem is the quality, quantity and the fact that theres nothing much more to an update other than maybe a few maps and 40 effects, if we get new, actual content and 15-20 effects rather than 40 i think it'd be much healthier.
i dont really get how its a problem if it is just cosmetics or how it hurts anything
It hurts the game readability and performance. It incentivizes Valve to be lazy and stop making content for the game. Do you even watch the video?
@@cloudynguyen6527 It hurts the performance of computers that are old asf, my computer is about 4 years old and has fairly new-ish parts for the time and i have fine performance around unusuals, might just have a shit computer. And we don't need content, we already have a bunch of weapons for 9 classes.

Aren't you quite the snappy weirdo.
Nah I think it’s the bots
It’s a combination of the bots, valves negligence and some toxic people causing newer players to sometimes quit due to a bad first impression.
Bots are certainly the biggest issue, but doesn’t mean we shouldn’t recognize other problems with the game.
@@cipherlock Agreed
mfs will really blame tf2 being dead on anything now huh
Voiced my opinion on this many a time before, but unusuals really just gotta stop being added. We're better off just recycling old effects people like instead of clones of said effects. Even with me making one admittedly whatever effect, I'd much prefer if unusuals just stop getting added as a whole.
If they are to add new ones. Placing more importance and value upon individual effects is a better approach. Limiting additions to no more than a few per update with one caveat, add them in a UNIVERSAL drop pool for each effect for the duration of the season. They've done it before, just make it the standard.
:O No ways!
edit: now that I actually watched the video I gotta say I agree. :c

11:22 well add this to the list of these we will demand on the 26th, #fixtf2
The situation effects are in just sucks. Valve crams 30+ of them into a case and players don't even like the majority of what they see. They last for that one seasonal update and then they're forgotten. A FEW new unusual effects used to be a big deal reserved for special events. Now they're crammed into every regular scheduled content pack. The game is stuffed with them, and getting yours in has never been easier.
on the bright side, I think particle creators have been doing great lately in leaning away from the typical neon clouds and several color variants. I've been more impressed and excited for the effects i see now than any year before. I see much more concise, simple and thematic ideas with great execution. contrast this with the recent years of deja vu, the colorswaps and conglomerate piles of entities stuffed in to make something all flashy and pretty.
So keep that up
Agreed, for the past few months it seems creators have been really trying to make new and unique effects. I hope Valve chooses those over more copy paste color swaps.
What is the retro style hud you use?
That’s called the “Weirdcore HUD,” it’s on Gamebanana!
@@cipherlock thanks! Also amazing video!
i don't think they should add new unusual weapon effects, what's the point when 90% of warpaints are garbage nowadays. the bloated amount of unusual effects also inflate the prices of other unusual hats due to more lower quality effect that are just recolors.
I doubt that war paints bring in millions, in a game that doesn't even pull a hundred thousand concurrent players, with many of those being bots, and many more being f2p or just not caring about unboxing paints or even hats and unusuals. Also, I may be wrong here so do take this with a pinch of salt, but if I remember correctly, particles are rendered with the CPU and not GPU, and, I'm speaking from experience here, they KILL performance on low end pcs. I used to play on a super low end computer and when a guy with an unusual joined the framerate would go from 70 to like 12 and it was unbearable.
Overall good video. ♥
I disagree with pretty much everything said in this video, but I do agree that valve needs to stop adding effects that look similar to ones already in game.
The problem is that there's too many advanced effects, how about we go back to small amounts of simple effects

honestly, i never really cared that much for unusuals. they are quite literally just cosmetics and weapons with particle effects. i'd also argue that their actual worth is nowhere near as high as people think they are. seriously, a thousand bucks for a hat with particle effects is just ridiculous, and i don't think the rarity of such an item actually justifies such extortionate prices.
Sometime they can be justified (as much as you with virtual particles), but there is a huge issue with price gouging and high-tier traders absolutely jacking up prices. Like the minimum price for a Hellfire effect is easily a few grand which is INSANE
@@cipherlock that's more or less what i'm referring to actually. there's no chance in hell some of the unusuals being sold for such ridiculous prices are really worth that much.
i mean for god's sake, they are just cosmetics/weapons with particle effects. you shouldn't have to fork over all of your life savings just to get an item with particles on it. i'd understand if they were being sold for double the price of a normal version of an item, but thousands of bucks for an unusual is just ridiculous. at that point it's just a scam
I own like 20 unusuals... am I the problem
As long as they are 20 hats with the Sapped effect, you are the solution.
I wanted to get into making fx for tf2 but also don't feel like it's even worth it, would rather love to see other people make cool cosmetics instead
