    Finally some good advice on UA-cam! Furthermore that high tongue position is also good for speaking (clear&fast pronunciation) and essential for vocal health for singers and actors when using the voice. Thanks for that great content.

      Sounds like your are sucking on the salivary glands at the bottom of your mouth instead of sucking the tongue to the roof of the mouth. I would try making some tongue click noises to help teach you correct palatal suction!

    When I take a selfie I noticed from the mewing and excercises that my left side is sharper than my right and my right side is slanted a little bit. I also that I been using my left side to chew more and put my tongue pressure on the left side. I’m 27 and wondering if I could correct the asymmetric imbalance by fixing the right side?

    • @OpusMyo
      @OpusMyo  2 місяці тому +1

      Hmm, hard to say, as it could be a few things. Could be your bite, your maxillary position, even your body alignment! But the answer is YES you can change it! I'd start by focusing on doing all your exercises as balanced as possibly- not adding 'extra reps' on the 'weaker' side. And chewing on one side is a BIG NONO

    • @OpusMyo

      Could be a few things that are making you feel that way: 1. if a person with low tongue posture starts to have good tongue posture suddenly one day, it can sometimes cause tongue tension and a feeling of overwhelm in the mouth- simply because it is so new, and should dissipate after a week or two. 2. If your maxilla (hard palate) is very anteriorly located (in layman's terms, if you have a long, flat face) perfectly-correct tongue posture can be detrimental because the back of the tongue can close off the pharynx and prohibit air flow. You can find out if this is the case by getting a CBCT also called a CONE BEAM x-ray to establish where the block is occurring in your airway- the tongue, the maxilla, or somewhere else. Most Airway Dentists have one. Hope that helps!

    I have an issue. Ive been going in and out of dental surgery for the last 2 years, and before the surgeries, my tongue would rest at the top, but now after all the surgeries, my tongue has been sitting as the bottom. To me, it feels more comfortable now to have it at the bottom instead of the top. Should i try to fix it?

    • @OpusMyo
      @OpusMyo  6 місяців тому

      Definitely! It is unfortunately common for the tongue to loose comfort at the roof of the mouth if a lot of dental change has happened.

  • @chensun6156

    What you're saying is so unusual and unexpected, I'll have to reflect on this further. Most correct posture in other parts of body is an untensed muscle. At 1:15, you're saying to push-tense the back of tongue upwards, to help create an ideal reinforced structure. And we know that continuous application of tension can cause chronic tension in muscles. Also, the tongue is better designed to press downward that create more space for air volume, and resulting louder sound and better resonance. What is this ideal reinforced structure you're referring to?

    • @OpusMyo
      @OpusMyo  Рік тому +3

      Hi Chen, thanks for asking such great questions! The tongue should be "held up" by slight suction while resting, not through pure muscular effort, i.e. there should be a slight negative pressure in the mouth that helps keep the tongue against the roof of the mouth. I agree with you that the tongue should not be 'engaged', or
      muscled and held' upwards all the time- that would cause a lot of tension and/or pain! However, there are many ways that this can be difficult for people- two common examples are 1. not having enough residual/resting strength or muscle tone (ex. static standing requires some muscle tone and effort, just very little, the same applies to the tongue.) 2. some severe tongue ties prohibit the tongue from lifting upwards; the tissue connects the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth and when it is overly short or tense, no amount of muscular strength will be able to lift the tongue.

    • @OpusMyo
      @OpusMyo  Рік тому +3

      Yes, depressing the tongue downwards can allow for more air volume on intake of breath, however, as the tongue is directly connected to the larynx, whenever the tongue is forced downwards, the larynx is as well (which is bad for us singers!) However, the tongue CAN lift UPWARDS independently of the larynx (thank goodness for singers!) Also, in regards to the physics of sound resonance, more air volume/space does not necessarily create more resonance. An easy example is a cello is much larger and had much more volume than a trumpet, however, the trumpet is significantly louder. Resonance is created by OPTIMIZING a space in which sound waves wiggle, not necessarily increasing the size of the space itself.

      My apologies, the "ideal structure" I mention is the balance/alignment of the facial bones (this is a small excerpt of a much longer video lecture, and I must have spliced that out. You can watch the full one on my channel if you'd like! )

    Could you please answer my question. Can the mewing technique be harmful to the bridge on my teeth? As far as I understand, what you present in the clip is what is popularly called mewing. I have a bridge on 4 front teeth. If I did the given technique correctly, would there be any problems with the bridge?

    • @OpusMyo
      @OpusMyo  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes 'Mewing' is just a fad word for the medical terminology of "correct tongue posture"! It is my opinion that your tongue should not be touching the front 4-6 teeth at all- for this exact reason. We want to concentrate on the tongue being UP not necessarily focused on it being forward.

    • @user-zu2of6jw5d
      @user-zu2of6jw5d 5 місяців тому

      @@OpusMyo
      But many say that mewing expands the palate. If that were to happen my bridge could break. That's why I'm afraid to start practicing the correct position of the tongue. I also think that the left side of my palate is a little smaller compared to the right side, so I'm afraid that holding my tongue straight might make my face asymmetric.

    • @OpusMyo
      @OpusMyo  5 місяців тому

      @@user-zu2of6jw5d Yes correct tongue posture can cause teeth and facial bones to move. However, correct tongue posture aids in correcting facial asymmetry as well as improves a myriad of other structural imbalances in the face, mouth, and head.
