That’s less annoying than taking 60 seconds to: step out of the box, spit on the ground, adjust your right glove, adjust your left glove, put one foot in, get some pine tar off your helmet, apply it to your bat, put your other foot in, dig in the dirt with your toes, wave the bat a little bit and then call timeout. At least this was entertaining.

So, I was actually going to comment on the Secret Base/SB Nation Weird Rules video as well about when a batter can switch sides, but that video actually only covers the pitcher switching hands (which they can't do during an at-bat once they've chosen a hand unless they are injured during the at-bat in which case they can switch hands, but cannot switch back for the rest of the game (Rule 5.07 (f)). There are a couple rules about using the batter's box, one being Rule 5.04 (b)(4). That one says a batter can never take more than one foot out of the batter's box during their at-bat save for a few exceptions including that they have swung at a pitch or feinted a bunt. In this case (going by MLB rules), some of this batter's switches were probably legal, some weren't. Rule 6.03 (a)(2) also mentions a batter can't switch batter's boxes while a pitcher is in position ready to pitch, so you would def have to be quick before the pitcher gets the ball back.

Ya, some leagues have allowed this for some reason. I don’t know when the MLB rule for became what it is today but the rules for hitters did change with the pitching rule for Pat Vendeti.
Why I don’t think it would be a good thing to do at the major league level, if it was allowed, is it would get you drilled.

So, unless you guys are specifically referring to the league in this clip, squatting does indeed have an effect on the strike zone. It is not based on your full upright, natural standing posture. I don't know why any baseball fan would think that.

Meh, the basic in-game rules from the ORB (which MLB uses) generally apply to baseball everywhere, with only minor adjustments from level to level or league to league. But it remains the starting point. Thus, EthnHayabusa's citing of the ORB is thus reasonable despite being fallible.
I can't find the official Japanese rule book anywhere, and I wouldn't be able to read it anyway. (Maybe I could run the Hiragana through Google Translate.) Various sources claim the NPB strike zone is smaller than its MLB counterpart and slightly trapezoidal in that it's larger on the outside than inside. However, I can't tell if this difference is de jure or de facto - i.e. it's how umpires tend to call it rather than what's on the book. Older fans remember that the American League umpires seemed to squeeze pitchers in the 1970s and 1980s, even though the zone was officially the same in each league.

The relevant portion is: “as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball.” Whether a batter squats (or stands upright) in their pre-pitch stance doesn’t matter. Whether your pre-pitch stance resembles David Eckstein or Gary Sheffield, by the time you’re preparing to actually swing, your posture is going to be the same.
