i legitimately don’t know how he comes up with his parts. they’re so outside of the box. dissonant but also melodic and as a guitarist myself i’m just like wth LOL.
Its the opposite for me as a guitarist. This seems easy to make up. In fact you cant really go wrong. A weird time signature, add some abrasive sounding notes there you go. It doesnt even have to sound "good" as long as someone can call it complex, you have succeeded. Its guitarists like tony iommi that impress me. Any one can hide behind complexity, its the simple stuff thats difficult to pull off without it being boring.

Did you hear 'The fall of troy'? i didn't listen to them for a long time, but its first thing that came to mind in term of similar sounding/vibe. Old things like: 'i just got symphony going' or "mouthwash..."...something-something. Can't check RN.

the sound reminds me a bit of billy talent but more complicated :D
At the Drive-In, whom the guitarist and singer were members of before forming The Mars Volta, was an influence of Billy Talent. It’s likely they tried to recreate that signature guitar sound. I would compare “One Armed Scissor” to Billy Talent’s “Try Honesty” to hear the influence for yourself.
