All youtubers review machines and rave about their video editing capabilites, and benchmark Premiere and Final Cut and Da Vinci Resolve. WE DO NOT CARE! VIDEO EDITING IS YOUR JOB, NOT YOUR VIEWERS'! We are not youtubers or video editors. We have very different jobs and needs. Did you ever wonder what benchmarks your viewers need to see? Is it too hard to ask and get some feedback?! PLEASE DO SOME SCIENTIFIC BENCHMARKS! Is it so hard to do a WOLFRAM MATHEMATICA or MATLAB benchmark?! Or a linear algebra benchmark? How about a simple matrix multiplication? Come on Max, you can do better.

Max, they’re binning these chips due to defects- not because of some anti-consumer motivation. This is normal (and planned), especially with larger dies on advanced nodes. It makes it so that they don’t have to discard these chips and can bin them into a lower product SKU.

6:04 Binning is not slowing processors on purpose. Its more of the categorization of chips/components that did not pass the performance standard and yet are functional enough not to be thrown as scrap. The non functional cores are disabled (which is the smarter option or else will cause problems while using the machine) so you still can get a 6 performance core machine.

I'm already pretty damn satisfied with the music production and video editing capabilities on my maxed out M1 Air so I'm sure even the base 14" would be awesome but 1TB is a necessity and with that you also get the unbinned CPU/GPU.

On-chip dedicated encoder/decoders for ProRes is epic for creative professionals. Been rocking an M1 MacMini - just to test the waters. Blow away with the performance, so going "all in" this round with a 16" MBP Max with 64 GB ram and 2TB drive - yeah, with tax and Apple Care - $5K. OBS, Resolve, Reaper, Docker/Kubernetes, and my software engineering projects, and of course, trolling on social media.

They key question I always try to remember when buying a laptop is not so much 'is this enough what I need now?' but also 'will this be enough for me 3,4,5 years down the line'. Apple's lack of upgradeability forces this point home even more. Scimping now could prove a BIG headache couple years down the line.

Hi Max. Firstly, thank you! The built in 1,000/1,600 nit HDR multi backlight zone displays are really themselves very valuable for future proofing. I have a C200/ DVR Studio and use raw light so I am likely to switch from a self built very powerful £7k ($9,6000 US) PC workstation as the performance will be so much better, not to mention portable! It's even cheaper than buying a decent 32 inch HDR display. It would be nice of one of the display outputs could be a direct video feed (bypassing the OS) but that would do Blackmagic out of some sales. The 'Max' jokes gave me a couple of nice smiles this morning as well. See, your Mum and Dad were well ahead of Apple! Cheers. Bob.

One part of video editing that wasn't covered here is motion graphics (Apple Motion, After Effects, Davinci Resolve Fusion). Those apps are GPU hogs. So for people doing a lot of that kind of work may be able to justify those extra GPU cores and RAM. We'll see as specific app benchmarks start coming in.
I got the M1 MAX/32 CORE GPU/64GB specifically for Fusion. I've been digging into that portion of Resolve lately and it's pretty painful on my underpowered Macs (2016 i7 iMacs). I'm hoping by splurging, it will be worth it for Fusion. We'll see. Same for Apple Motion. My current machines are still pretty solid for pure editing, but get destroyed in motion graphics apps.
I'm also going to experiment with transcoding older video projects from ProRes to HEVC to save on drive space. I started going down that road a few months ago, but my non M1 Macs just can't handle the workload. It takes them FOREVER to transcode to HEVC. I'm hoping to let the M1 MAX run every night just transcoding to HEVC.

Thanks for a great video! Could you recommend a good mobile external for video editors? 3TB plus? Thank you!

Hmm as a professional software developer in server world were I need to run many docker images in addition to the dev tools for multiple languages currently my 5 year old Mac Book Pro with 16GB is not enough. Given a five year refresh I currently need 32GB so it would make sense to buy a 64GB for future proofing the purchase.

@@amandaburleson2035 probably but then I would have to trade in the Mac and upgrade. Buying two macs, time lost due to having to reinstall software etc is going to cost me more. Infrequent big leaps is better than frequent small ones.
Couldn’t you say the same about all the tech. Why buy a pro now in a few years the MacBook Airs will have the same power and memory.

Talking about tabs, in particular Microsoft Edge has a feature where it puts unused tabs to sleep to save resources.

As always, Thank you Max for all your valuble information! I went to the Apple site and didn't see the System on a Chip (Processor) "Which Chip is Right for You" option. Any idea why? Thanks again. 😊👍

So well explained. Thank you. Do you know if the 96W power adaptor will degrade the battery faster because it fast charges?
