      Would this base model be good for the casual video editor that makes maybe 3/4 10 minute videos a month? Also my footage will be coming from my GoPro10 & drone. Not alot of hardcore editing, just working on 1 project at a time and usually deleting after complete for my channel. Thanks!

    Great video! Thanks for showcasing how powerful this base model actually is! I am very much between the base 16" and base 14" due to the display size. obviously with the 16" you get the unbinned M1 Pro which is a great option to go for as well. though the price jump is significant. After this video i'm more than ever convinced the base 14" is sufficient for my needs which are mainly photo editing anyways.

      I found a YTer that did it right. He had 4x 4K fpv drone footage stacked and put in a 2x2 tile layout in the screen and scrubbed through them all on the baseline 14in mbp. It actually went through pretty good. It lagged a little bit but when compared to his desktop is was the same as running 1x of the same footage, on a pc that had 64gb ram and a 3070

So I went middle of the road not base but not crazy high end. It’s hard find reviews on the middle of the road 14”. 14” I went with portable. I travel all time, and my 2016 15” was just pain. Thank you, that tells me I can get the low end 14 and a monitor, and a SSD drive ( storage think 500gb do fine, always has 1tb) take steps at a time as I am researching, means if I want FCP I have to add funds or use resolve and relearn it

    I thought I'd come back & thank you as I just bought a base M1 14" MacBook Pro in July 2023 & boy does this MacBook deliver & I got my M1mac book at a great price 25% cheaper than the M2 . I watched your vid a while back & was a help in me deciding I didn't need a M2 Mac at 2099 & if I could find a new M1 that would be a winner for me . Anyone out there if you can find a New M1 MacBook , I'd highly recommend one over the M2.

    is all you need, unless you want a bigger screen. Then that bigger screen comes with an extra 4 hrs of battery and going for the bigger screen also bumps up the cores :) so I agree the 14 is all you need but if you want a bigger screen that 400 extra includes a lot of extras. However I agree the max chip is over kill for a generic user

    Wathicng this from 14" Base Model. Totally agree this model is more than enough for most.
    One app I am using - where I need multiple windows.
    On my previous MBP 13" 2019 model - I could open 20 instances, fans - screaming, system - lagging - it was maximum.
    On 14" model - I can open 250 insntances of the app and still have ±19% free resources. Fans - are not even on at this point, no heating whatsoever. This is huge for me. It outpeforms PC desktop bought for the same task a months ago with similar price tag twice!

    As cool as all this is, and absolutely a must-have for those that need it, I've been doing professional editing on my regular M1 MPB for months now and it's never given me a problem. The company I work for uses a combination of C100 MkIIs and GH5s, so the footage is pretty damn easy to work with, even in Premiere (now that its been much better optimized for Apple silicon). I'm gonna be hanging onto this machine until we upgrade our cameras, though I'll admit videos like this make me hope we upgrade sooner than later so I can play with the new toys

      Do you have the 8gb or 16gb? on the m1 you have?

    • @spitperson69
      @spitperson69 2 роки тому +5

      @@VinceVintage I saw a bunch of videos similar to this one saying to get the base, and that's what I did, so I only have the 8gb model. So far it's only been a problem in two scenarios: if I'm using too many heavy duty plugins in Logic (specifically Bias FX 2, nothing else really), I'll get memory overloads. No real way around that one. The other is if I'm editing in Premiere for more than 2-3 hours the memory tends to fill up and make playback choppy, but literally all I have to do to fix that is restart premiere and I've got another 2-3 hours of smooth playback. Ultimately, if I had to re-buy, I'd pony up for the 16gb of RAM and 1tb of storage, but right now I've got 8gb/512gb and it still blows every other computer in the price range out of the water 99% of the time.

      @@spitperson69 Hi. Do u think 16gb ram (MBP14 base model) would be "future proof" enough if I use it for 5-6 yrs? I'm not a professional editor like u. just love to learn editing and making youtube videos in my "free time" (definitely not 8K 6K or so 😂). hence I know 16gb ram is enough for today, but not too sure about the next 5-6 yrs.

    • @spitperson69
      @spitperson69 2 роки тому +5

      @@leenim i don’t have the 14” M1 Pro, just the 13” M1, so I can really only speak to that. As for future-proofing, it really just depends. What resolution are you working with? What codec? How deep are you editing? 6K is primarily available in cine cameras right now, but 6 years from now 6k or even 8k may be the new standard. If you’re gonna be adding motion graphics or heavy denoising, that’s gonna need extra RAM. If you’re working with RAW formats or, for example, Sony HEVC footage, that’s typically harder to decompress and RAM can help with that. The number of factors that can impact the amount of memory you need are plenty.
      All I can say is I regularly edit 3-6 concurrent streams of mixed FHD/4K video, with optical flow time remapping, and pretty heavy grades on my 8gb with next to no issues. 16gb would obviously make that even easier. I’m also, however, typically working with pretty light (and big) codecs, I rarely use a denoiser, and the company I work for has a dedicated motion graphics artist so I don’t have to worry about anything too complicated in that department.
      Based on my experience with the M1, I imagine that 16gb plus the improved memory bandwidth and dedicated video decoders in the M1 Pro will be far more than you need to meet the needs you have for a typical youtube video. As for the next 5-6 years though? I just don’t know what’s gonna happen. Is 8K gonna be the new 4K? Will motion graphics become more popular? Will new, RAM heavy, digital stabilization methods become available? If I knew I’d be making a lot more money working for Sony or Canon right now. If I were trying to make the computer last that long I’d spring for the 32gb version if not the 64gb. But I typically upgrade every 2-3 years, which is a lot easier to plan for.
      The final thing I’d say is that Apple has a great buyback/upgrade program. When I was still considering these new models I found I could still get more than $900 trade-in for my $1200 computer. If you commit to Apple and take care of your stuff, upgrading sooner can be a fair bit easier. but that’s all up to you.

    Such a good video. I’ve lost sleep because of the situation I feel a decent amount of us are in. I do edit and grade 6k raw sometimes but most of the time it’s slogiii footage and 6/10 times it’s delivering to clients for web and 4k. I think where I stubbed my toe in all of this is leaving mac for so long building what I thought was a wild pc not realizing that Apple had stepped it up since 2012 and thinking I NEED fully specd. That being said as things grow I will want the wiggle room. So decided to go the max 16in base,32 core 32 ram. No such thing as future proof but that thing will last me a longggg time. The display is wild and can’t resist it lol
