I love how your first video of this machine goes straight and test the performance. I just don’t like the video people make where they tell us about the first impressions and saying more and more videos will follow. Love your channel broh
Can you do a video about 3D? Like blender one, there’s no such video on UA-cam. Blender Cycle and Eevee and physics and simulation. Octane, redshift, renderman, Radeonpro render is useful too if available. It’ll be highly appreciated. There’s a whole community who need this benchmark, you’ll definitely get exposure, I’ll share in in 3d forums. Hope you’ll consider.
The only tests I’ve been able to find are for rendering output. But the biggest frustration I live through is editing with a stuttering scrubber and challenges previewing the transitions. Thanks for creating this video!
After effects please. Not just Puget benchmarks but real world tests. Also, can anyone kindly confirm if the m1 supports after effects plugins and extensions...thanks a lot
Would love to see how this works with noise reduction stuff and other of the more intense effects, sort of a comparison with the regular m1. So far, it looks fantastic!
14:01 "Not supposed to be super in depth. I've only had this thing for about three hours." Peak UA-cam. All jokes aside, great demo, and very informative video!
I'm more interested in this m1 pro 16gb performance compare with the m1 16gb performance. Can't decide if I should pay that extra almost thousand dollars which is not cheap after converting the currency.
@@robbyfn yes I do have the money, my question is does it worth the extra power. A mainly video and photo editor with Davinci and Lightroom. Occasionally with After Effect. That's why I wanna know if the improvement on m1 pro, will it be marginally much better compared to the m1.
it really depends on what you aim to work on. Is it heavy, 4k footage? As shown in this video? Depends how far you go into editing. 13'' M1 MB Pro with 16gb ram is way enough for most of the work. If you really want the better, bigger screen then that's a big argument. In short, you won't regret any of them ;)
I really appreciate your real-world tests. One thing though; when you have multiple layers, you are not really taxing the system unless you do some kind of picture-in-picture effect or tiles, with all the layers playing back at the same time on the screen.
This was the by far interesting video of the M1 Pro I have seen! Could you do some more tests with the BRAW footage, maybe some color grading and denoising?
As a videographer who edits in 4K 10 bit do you think upgrading to the 32gb is necessary ? I saw your test with the A7S3 and just wanted your recommendation. I do commercial work for Real estate agents
I’m a videographer/drone pilot. To me it makes sense to upgrade to the 32GB. I want to edit drone footage in 4K 10 bit. I’m looking at the MBPro 16” M1 10 core/16 core 32GB 512GB or possibly the M2 12/29 core 16GB 512GB. The M1 is $2399 and the M2 is $2499.
Thanks for the review. I was disapointed to see how slow the MBP is decoding a bunch of the videos. Ultimatley those are “distribution codecs” and you should be editing in PRORES which should be buttery smooth for editing. Changing the “display resolution” wont make much difference i.e. the cost is decoding the video, which will be the same regardless. A note on your presentation style, you are over gesticulating/pointing and placing a bit too much emphasis / heaviness on words - chill out a bit and be more relaxed bro!
Thanks for sharing but I think it would have been interesting to at least have the R3D footage play a little bit longer to see if it actually stabilises in playback-speed rather than just jumping along to the next clip 2 seconds later and scrubbing randomly in the timeline. Thanks!
great overview thanks!! im really interested in more review, like, performance with heavy color grading (mid tones, raising shadows, lowering highlights, etc. at the same time with more layers and fusion performance ... thanks ;)
Please do a full tutorial on how to run games on MacBook Pro M1 Pro! I know you gotta get these videos out, but us hopeful Mac gamers are excited to do this!
Rendeing a 4K 5 minute video with a few effects and color grades on my Dell XPS 15 1050ti about 30 minutes. As I can't get smooth playback, I only see mistakes once rendered so I often had to repeat this process 2 or 3 times. This Macbook definitely seems like to computer I've been waiting for.
I get it, but i wonder how many people are like me, using non apple apps, and doing office work. I use edge (bcs i need porting between mac and pc) office 365, slack, zoom, ring, etc etc and i tell you after 1 year of mbp pro m1, all the glory fades and the m1 gets slow, sometimes very slow.
Maybe it‘s just me but „PLENTY OF MEMORY AND CPU LEFT“ when it‘s using 14GB of 16 available and 60% CPU doesn‘t seem quite right to me. It‘s working great, but it‘s not as if these are amazing results tbh 😅
And - it’s on a brand new, blank slate computer. A year in, when you have 100 apps installed with god knows how many background libraries running constantly, it’ll choke
the best way to edit is to work on proxy... if you are a professional editor who works on fiction and non fiction content then you get more than 100 hours of rushes and converting them to a pro-res proxy or dnxhr lb or sb is the best way to go about it and then send over the raw to the colorist along with the xml. Only youtubers aim at editing in 4k 6k and 8k and they mostly do the timeline test with 10-20 clips on tops which is really not an ideal editing scenario. And do keep in mind that a complete edit project will also have layers of dialogues - voice overs - alot of sfx and music layers so high resolution compressed rushes are not gonna play back like the did in this clip too. Nothing against the video as this is currently the only video which gives the information I need. Thanks for this and yea it seems like the base model with a 32gb ram for future proofing is way more than enough if you are a professional video editor.
I was waiting for your M1 Max videos! Please make gaming videos about the 14inch MacBook. I have an M1 Air and know I don't need the 2021 MacBook Pro but I have a Tech website and the gaming aspect is something that will encourage me to buy it sooner.
Very important. Everyone is not a video editor. Some of us spend 3/4 of our computer time in after effects... Please kindly do some real world after effects performance testing. Many thanks
Thank you for this! I’m kind of having second thoughts about my order now. Your base model is performing exactly how my M1 MB Air w 16gb is,but for GoPro and 8-bit color footage from the ZV-1 and E10. I’m hoping the render time for transitions and texts will be shorter and not have to lower the timeline resolution after adding everything with the M1 Pro. Will have to see other base model reviews with the 8/10 cpu/gpu core.
Awesome video man! What editing software do you think is best for someone trying to get into Instagram reels. So best for ease of use with transitions?
Did you use Davinci Resolve 17.4 which has been optimised for the M1 Pro and M1 Max? Can you estimate which Nvidia RTX GPU best approximates the power of the chip that you have? Regarding editing in Resolve, does changing the timeline resolution in the Project Settings, before and during editing, have any effect on the ultimate output quality at the time of rendering? Or is the timeline resolution purely relating to how clearly you wish to view the imagine on your LCD screen?
Editing Rez is not related to output quality when rendering in Davinci. But, you should keep in mind that some mistakes might not show in 1080 that will show in 4k (for example with windows, manual Matt, etc)
One day you're going to get a M1 Max based system with 32/64GB of RAM, and I'm gonna thumbs up that video just like I did this one. I work with After Effects a lot, and I find M1 machines to be lacking. Hopefully, the M1 Max is going to change that and push me to switch from x86 to ARM. (Though I do need a big monitor like an iMac 27', I simply can't work with a laptop and its tiny screen)
How would you say it compares to the Macbook Air M1 with you current workflow? My feeling is if one mainly use ProRes it will make upgrade worth it. But other codecs maybe not that much advantage?
For me personally (triple stacked timeline with the above footage) it destroys the M1 Air. For other users with a more optimized workflow (e.g. using ProRes, proxies, or transcoded footage, they can still likely get away with an Air or 2020 Pro.
Any reason why you’re going to DnxHR with the atomos recorder instead of prores? It’d be interesting to see a difference between dnx and prores codecs on the pro and pro max 😊 Personally I bought a 16 inch M1 pro max with 32GB Ram for VFX and editing etc. I’m hoping AE gets a big update when they optimize for M1, but I’m not holding out hope that it takes full capability of these machines :( Great video man, keep em coming!
I do most of my serious editing on a dedicated Windows editing PC - which DNxHR plays better on. If I was Mac-based I would 100% record or transcode in ProRes though!

iJustine's video touched on that, albeit in a less scientific manner (in Resovle).
Agreed. It seems the only thing his export was, was a light grade.
So it could well be just the h.265 that is the bottleneck.
