You can damage your battery pack, it's not made for heavy duty off-road
You didn't tell us the wheel size you're running on the Touareg. You just said it's a 17 inch wheel and 32 inch tyre but that doesn't tell me anything about tyre width etc.
I know that on the basemodel Touareg you can run 16inch wheels at least on the 2.5TDi which probably was sold only in Europe. At least I found a manual with a rear lock diff and air suspension. I'll have a lock at it tomorrow
Watch this offroad tires: ua-cam.com/video/HB-3m6mrkP4/v-deo.html
The case on that battery pack is 1/4 inch aluminum plate. Pretty beefy already. Maybe get some 10 gauge steel to pair with that and it would be bullet proof.
Glad you guys did this comparison like I asked. The Model X is a great road car. 💩 offroad
I don’t think anyone ever thought off roading the Tesla Model X was a good idea, everyone just wanted to see the carnage 😂
Joseph Whiskey Beale Hahahaha yeah pretty much
No it is a good idea if it's set up right. It will be famous
You use suvs for adventure so you never know what situations ppl might find themselves in. I always enjoy watching regular cars on trails
Joseph Whiskey Beale search for «Bjørn nyland model z offroad» :)
Its was allways meant to be a city SUV to climb over potholes, not rocks.
There is a titanium skid plate protecting the batteries. They did not just install some plastic...
Jared Scott why they didn’t feel like researching the underbody of the Tesla before off-roading it is beyond me😂 actually the more you watch the series the more you can hear the the tone of them wanting the Tesla to look worse than it is, so bad
The titanium skid plate is just at the front of the battery, it doesn't cover the whole bottom, it's made to deflect something that can be at the road at high speed, but the bottom is aluminium and pretty thick
@@Pedrodemio If you're depending on aluminum for UCP (especially on a vehicle as heavy as the Model X) then - well... I know how much offroading you've done :P
Indeed, looks like research was too hard to do...
#gasBiased
Both math and research are lacking at TFL especially when it comes to electrics.
For Sale: White Tesla Model X, excellent condition, needs nothing, always babied never abused! 😁😁😁
I'd still take it lol
Except, you can't sell a Tesla private party, you must sell it back to Tesla and they sell the used one.
mrvwbug44 wrong
mrvwbug44 Of course you just have to ruin everything.
@@mrvwbug4423 what rubbish are you spouting? Just look in the used car listings and select Tesla. They are not all sold by the manufacturer.
Teslas have a titanium plate under the battery to protect it from being punctured.
Yes, but has it been tested? This is 5000 lbs of pressure! Think of the underside bouncing on a sharp rock.
@Chris Hugman But that's a different kind of impact all together
@Chris Hugman
And now after the cybrtruck debacle, would you trust that.
@@Robert-cu9bm it's a titanium plate, certainly better than a steel undertray any day.
@@deltacx1059 Titanium is lighter, but weaker than steel.
That suspension arm so close and right over top of the tire is rediculous
Yeah what the heck is that all about?
@@no_alias_for_me My first thought was to prevent customers from installing too big of tires that would mess with the aerodynamics and lowest air suspension settings of the car.....but then I remembered that it's a Tesla and Tesla just doesn't like customers alternating ANYTHING on the car so they go out of their way to make it as difficult as possible so you can only go through them to get anything done. It's about money.
@@thespector8587
All Tesla models have the same design flaw.
@@135iN55 it's on purpose to reduce cost, but I'm 100% sure that they did it on the model X to prevent people form making modifications. Tesla did not think of falcon wings and airsuspension to then forget that customer may want bigger tires to go offroading. They're not that stupid.
It's most likely because of the top speed. You cant safely hit the top speed with oversized tires
20:31, damn the cooling is working so damn hard to cool the Tesla xD Like a stationary PC on max settings in a high-end game
Tesla cars always do that. Its the fan for the battery cooling system and the air-conditioning system.
Tesla battery pack has a three-layer shield designed to protect the battery and charging circuitry from being punctured even in very high speed impacts. The shielding features a hollow aluminum tube to deflect impacting objects, a titanium shield to protect sensitive components from puncture damage, and an aluminum extrusion to absorb impact energy. Thomas Paul def isn't flammable...
@@thomaspaul2465 The problem is that the battery can catch on fire for no apparent reason, as seen on security videos, so no amount of protection from foreign objects will help in a thermal runaway.
I hit a chunk of ice two winters ago. got out of the car and it smelled like gas. not only did it puncture the gas line, it also took out a brake line.
that being said, with how fragile gasoline cars are, in well over 1 million miles and 16 years of driving, that's the closest I've come to an incident.
and my gas tank sits low, low enough that I scrape it virtually every time I pull out of a low driveway. and I've honestly never had a gas tank puncture, and that is with really thin sheet metal that you can bend with a bare hand.
now lithium batteries, although scary, habe onpy a fraction the power potential. the model s has the power equivalent of 2.6 gallons of gas.
the whole cars catching fire thing was due to a model s hitting a trailer hitch in the road. it punctured one of 9 battery cells and the other groups did not spontaneously ignite either.
that battery case saw over 15 tons of force leading up to its failure, and there was plenty of notice and no injury associated with it. and that was before they started armoring them just in case.
@@thomaspaul2465 Just for the record my "EV" that we own has a perfect no fire ever even after 400,000 worldwide sales. There is even a UA-cam test done on one of its battery cells that was 100% charged then he stubbed it muiltble times with a screwdriver, and all that came out of that battery was smoke no fire, then he thought let's try a blow torch and burned the battery but the only part of the cell that caught on fire was the sealant used to join the cell pack together, and did it work after all that abuse? Yep it was retested and still produced a voltage and current.
Would you care to try that same test on a Tesla battery pack?
@@lilsammywasapunkrock So what caused the Tesla parked in the car park building to go up in flames? It most certainly did not have it's cells puntured, but by the sounds of it a build up of nasty dendrites caused a short and that was the end of that car!
I understand what you guys are trying to accomplish here, but the difference in tires makes a massive difference in offroad traction. At the end of the day, the Tesla got through the obstacles, on all-season tires, commendable...
There is a UA-cam channel, delta4x4, who put all terrain tires on a Model X. You should contact him and see how he did it.
Go to tire shop, buy tires, have them installed?
@@joelspaulding5964 That would be too difficult to comprehend for some :)
Mattson McCraw This is the reason I came to the comments, to see if someone had already posted this.
channel enginiring explaned did put 18 inch tires on the tesla 3
You shouldn't have more than 18 inch rims off the pavement anyways. Those rubber band tires with the oversized rims and undersized spokes are stupid.
I don't think the engineers that designed the Model X have ever been on a mountain road. To them off-road means a gravel driveway.
@ I think the terminology for SUV kinda went to shit nowadays, technically this has more crossover DNA than SUV DNA, the VW is kinda in between crossover and SUV thanks to its unibody construction and more road focused running gear, and something like the HUMMER H3 being about as close to a modern SUV as you can get. (imo the only SUV true to what it started as long ago that you can buy new would be that SUV version of the Toyota Tacoma, the 4runner if I remember correctly.)
@Sjors nope
Sjors Tesla Truck yes not small cars.😒
@Sjors you mean the Tesla Cybertruck triple motor is an off-roader
@Sjors Tesla X and Y are SUVs not off-roaders. The Cybertruck has 1. much better ground clearance, 2. much lower approach and departure angles, 3. much more obviously off-road focused tyres - S and X have road tyres.
Low ground clearance and low-profile tires suck all the fun out of offroading. It might be easier to convert the Toureg to EV than it would be to make the Model X offroad-worthy.
For sure. Though 4WD tesla swap might be difficult (though the A6 guy did it), a Teslaswap in itself is quite straight forward once you figure out where to put enough batteries.
Why not just convert a... used 1998 jeep grand Cherokee or maybe a F150 or even a 4 door Tacoma ....
Dude grease those rollers on the 3 wheel test. That sound is like a chalkboard.
I believe that sound is the brakes on the car.

I want to see a Lambo Urus off road!
In an off-road situation, momentum is very important. You've got to keep the speed up to sort of ease your way through loose dirt especially if you're going uphill. There were times when the Model X could have done it easily if not for that dude who always cry "STOP" right on the spot where the obstacle is and trying to make the X crawl as slow as possible so it would actually depend upon the grip of the "on-road or street" tires. Of course it would slip because the tires were not made for that kind of ride. It was as if he was deliberately trying to get the Model X stuck when it could have been a piece of cake if it had the momentum.
To be fair, last time they broke a Tesla it took them months to get it back, I would be careful too.
With no clearance, you cannot go fast enough to use momentum. It was mm away from scraping many times. If he had gone any faster, suspension bounce would have made him bottom out.
The whole vehicle wasn't made for this kind of ride. That's why it pisses off people who actually use their suvs.
If it fits in your budget, would love to see you guys test out a Rivian when they become available. Seams like the one motor per wheel design on the Rivian could provide the perfect AWD system where you're not relying on limited slip differential or braking the spinning wheels.
Roger Heuckeroth yeah should wait for the truck & is supposed to be cheaper.
Roger Heuckeroth Andrea just reviewed the Bolinger. Can we see one of those on TFL Off-road?
Save your money and get one of these. Although I have been hearing about them for what feels like forever and they are still not for sale.
@@guyod1 to be fair they announced the product less than a year ago and they are supposed to start deliveries next year.
I get the same when I see a vehicle that I'd love to see on the market, I have to remind myself to be patient.
I'm kind of curious what those will do when they come out. I live about a 1/2 hour from that plant.
Testing the Tuareg (which was expressly designed for serious off road/overland use) against the Tesla (that was not designed for off road, and the manufacturer never said it was made for serious off roading) not at all fair. If you do it, you must also drag race the two, compare crash test results, take both to a race track, and test the biohazard filtration system of the Tesla against the Tuareg air cabin filter.
"Maybe the battery has some protection"? Do you know nothing about the Tesla?
the X did everything you asked of it, and with street tires.. Please...
SUV does not mean off road, but it performed quite well regardless..
Dude it's okay. The host of this channel are good friends with a known Tesla shortseller Anton Wahlman. He shows up on their podcast shitting on Tesla all the time including plotting to damage a Tesla to test out service. All this said on this channel.
They did say they knew it wasn't fair...
The Tesla bio hazard air system. What you mean the..cough..HEPA air filter - you can get the equivalent for the Touareg. (Bosch HEPA cabin Filter)
A BMW X5 with factory air suspension would've been a better comparison
You guys had me on the edge of my seat watching it go over some of those rocks. It’ll be a challenge making it a properly capable off-roader, but a fun one that is! can’t wait.
That “Rocky Top” @ 22:02, reminded me of GTA V cutscene 😂
Yes you can get an AT tires 255/50/19. Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus 255/55 R19. At least you can buy they in Europe. You can also find General Grabber AT3 in exact size you are looking for
Daniel looking on tire rake I did not see one all terrain tire in the 255/50 r 19 they were all sport truck tires or all seasons even the general grapplers were a all season
Daniel you’re an idiot. You just proved yourself wrong in that comment. 55 profile is bigger than 50 sence there being NOOOO 255/50/R19 off road tires.
Tyrrell Roach General Grabber AT3 is indeed all season tyre, but as well AT - All Terrain tyre.
Wouldn't matter. The available stock 265/50R19 inch tire has a weight rating of 110, the 255/50R19s are only rated at 107, making them technically 3 sizes too small. 255/55R19s would have the necessary weight rating but are 1/2 inch taller, bringing the tire 1/4 inch closer to the spindle.
Since this thing is white, it needs a Light Green and Gray Camo Wrap!! It’ll look so badass and it’ll complete the overland look.
Let's be real, nobody ever really intended for these things to go off road. Even 4Runners and Jeeps are hardly ever off road lol

I too am disappointed that I can't be more off road capable, I am look forward to see how you do yours.
I didn't need this much stress on my Sunday morning!
The bottom of the battery pack is made of several layers of thick steel sheets. For safety reasons.
It is much stronger than most gas cars bottoms. The hole car can easily be suspended from a single sharp rock without any damages, to the car.
You can see that in various videos where the battery pack gets disassembled.
But has it been tested when it is being punctured? I am talking about the whole vehicle’s underside being punctured rapidly.
@@unknownunknowns They tested the car under-body for piercing tests against objects like concrete blocks, and steel parts without any damage. according to my estimates, the battery packs bottom made of at least 15mm thick toughened steel plate. This is enough to stop a 7.62 armor piercing rifle bullet..
8SharkTV Moshe How many lbs per square inch? And what video can I see them testing it? It looks like Tesla should drop their whole vehicles from, say, five stories high and land it on a sharp object of steel or rock.

My plan is to buy the all-electric XC90 due out in 2 years. Expecting about $80,000+ before tax credits, but I've had my old XC90 for a long time now.
Why don you put the same tesla wheels on touareg and see if the traction will work as good as the model X?
These guys have a habit of not making things fair. Then they explain it as if that justifies it somehow.
They also did the test with the factory street tires on the Toureg and explained in detail why you can't get better off road tires on the Telsa and why. What more do you need? It wasn't a test of tires, it was a test of what the Telsa could and since there aren't off road tires for it that was the limiting factor.
it's a good thing you didn't damage your model x
like Bjorn nyland's 10k in damages from offroading his founders edition model x
Did I miss the reason why the *had* to pick an electric vehicle for heavy duty work in the first place? Imho electric vehicles are still in their early adopter phase and have zero benefits over combustion engines when it comes to cost, price / performance, carbon footprint (battery manufacturing, electricity manufacturing) and range.
Well "SUV" has lost its true meaning a long time ago so I wouldn't actually see every SUV as an Off-Road wonder at all. SUV these days are mainly meant for bigger storage, many seats and at the same time mild Off-Road capabilities so it can actually drive in mud and dirt roads. Although there are many SUVs which are actually not providing that much more storage, looking at you, "SUV Coupés", which is an abomination by itself. The Model X is definitely not made for actual offroading, I'd get a Wrangler for that.
to be fair, the X is more of a crossover than a SUV given that it's based on the Model S
@@cpufreak101 It's not just based on Model S. It's a bigger Model S.
@@cpufreak101 Elon needs to learn to use the correct words. Modern SUVs are often a shadow of what they can be the same way that fwd station wagons are to thier older models.
Yeap, actually a titaniam plate protecting the battery. You all did not do enough research on the Tesla...
They would still have to be careful the Model X weighs 6000 or 7,000 lbs. Coupled with the high weight and a bad approach angle, a sharp rock would still easily puncture through titanium if they did it wrong.
@@youandiryan Wrong, the car will todder over a large rock with the plate but it would not be pierced, there are videos of it crushing and destroying many metal concrete objects from Tesla you can watch on youtube.
Put some massive offsets on the tires and just replace wheel bearings more frequently. Maybe 2 or 3 inch offset. Maybe that would solve the tie rod end clearance issue.
Any idea what a set of wheel bearings for an X will cost? That's a scary thought. lol
X2 offsets
Congratulations! You’ve just successfully voided your warranty!
@Chris Ruiz Honestly Tesla means a straight up dirt road with the exception of a few medium small rocks. The car wasn't designed to go offloading and so they can get a void on their warranty because they were doing something that the car really shouldn't do.
it looks like they engineered the suspension on purpose. To avoid customers being tempted to make aftermarket modifications.
D.O.A. Apple is about to get the game too lol
It’s not about preventing mods, it’s just creating good geometry in a multi-link front. It allows optimizing caster, camber, and steering axis over a wider range of compression, extension, and steering angles - great for a premium sedan/sports car - on pavement. Like a lot of strut suspensions also, the drawback is close clearances that don’t allow much in the way of wider, or in this case taller tires.
The Freemasons run the country...
I think @@rx7racerca nailed it. Avoiding aftermarket wouldn't really make sense but designing the X for offroad, would really diminish the on-road characteristics that the vast majority of its demographic is looking for.

Ya in the early 2010’s after a couple people ran over cinder blocks on the freeway in their model S’s and caused fires Tesla wanted to make sure that wasn’t going to happen anymore. Putting skid plates on it would be like wrapping a rock in aluminum foil at this point.

don't try overlanding the Model X...wait for the upcoming Tesla Pick up truck... my 2 cents
With the suspension arm setup as it is it'll be impossible to ever fit decent tyres hopefully 2nd gen model xs get a revised setup
there are nonplans for a 2nd gen model x
Just get a Rivian or ICE vehicle are the only options.
Wondering if anyone has developed a suspension modification yet that will allow larger tires.
I really dont know that the X will ever have much of an offroad aftermarket. I mean someone will assuredly throw something together, but I just dont think there'd be a market out there for it. Personally I'd only pay those big bucks for something designed to kickass offroad, but doing that with an X would really take away from its on-road capabilities that its demographic is interested in.

If you cant find off road tires you could try some 255/50 19 winter tires.
Some of them have a pretty aggressive tread pattern. Nokian Weatherproof SUV for example.
They need sidewall protection or they're gonna cut tires like a mofo.

Try : 255/50 R19 107H XL General Tire Grabber AT3 or if you can fit 255/55r19. 265/50r19 fit from teslas website.
Every Tesla video on youtube '' The Torque is great and it has lots of power because of the electric motors''.. Yes we know, knew it 40 video's ago!
I have a suggestion to fit Off road tires on the Tesla! There is a few ways you can do it starting from cheap to mediocre to very expensive and the quality and risk of damage ranges in the same order.
1. Cheap option - you can get a few washers and extend the distance from the hub to get further from the brake and the suspension bar.
2nd option mediocre - they sell hub extensions devices for street racer vehicles with similar issues (Tesla isn't the only car brand with the brake and suspension issues). This option can also be produced at a metal shop if you can't find one or can't get one to your location.
3rd. Most expensive option - there are Tesla enhancement garages that can customize this option for you. Also there is a youtuber by the name of "Rich Rebuilds" that likes to help out with these projects and definitely does like to Collaborate with other Tesla drivers which makes a perfect option.
Thumbs up and or comment if you agree, like, or if this helps.
(I hope you guys will be able to see this comment)

Tommy: Good Idea!
The Rivian will be amazing for this kind of stuff. Can't wait to see it out on the road. And obviously the Tesla truck as well whenever that comes to fruition.
Tesla truck!😂😂😂🤮
You can still do this... just add hub extension discs and the suspension upper arm won't be in the way of the tire. Bigger rim size and extensions plus the bigger off road tires can fit.
Much like a Range Rover or a G Wagon, very few Tesla model X’s will ever see an unpaved road let along go billy goating up a hill. The difference is the design. Tesla designed the vehicle for what it’s owners would actually do.
You guys have some serious balls doing this with your own 87k. Not wise, but certainly ballsy.
Yep, it is in company with the chelsea tractors (or American equivalent - Bellaire tractors? ).
At least it suits that environment better, air suspension for the speed humps. Hepa filter for the pollution.
valid point
I wonder if it’s possible to raise the suspension. I know people have lowered the model 3
The model 3 doesn't have air suspension it has a ordinary spring set up. Thats how people are able to lower the model 3.
The Tesla X isn't a SUV. It's a Mini Van that's had a redbull.

@@SKYZO4 They've already tested The Model X. it's to low to the ground to clear rugged terrain.
I'm willing to bet if you went with a skinny wheel, with really low backspacing (maybe 3 or 4''), you would be able to get a taller tire on that would clear the base of the strut tower.
I could see a 17x7 with lower backspacing clearing the strut tower along with a skinnier tire. I believe those have 8.5'' wide wheels. Not sure about caliper clearance , though, but steel wheels are usually thinner and can clear calipers better
I found two 255/55-19 all terrains, Tommy. The Continental TerrainContact A/T and Cooper Zeon LTZ.
Yep the same same size tire that comes with the LR4, so it will probably fit the X

i could done this in a 93 geo metro...
cody s i have done rocky top and I can tell you with absolute certainty that a geo metro would never make it. That is, unless, you mount a geo metro body (even though it is a unibody) on a mid90’s blazer frame (seen it done). You need 4x4 and ground clearance to run this trail.
I'll bet you could ... if it was being DRAGGED to the top by a 3/4 ton pickup. Not sure what would be left of it at the top ...
@@kenoday7562 or u just don't know how drive. There nothing hard about this road
Go for it, put that theory to the test
I did that trail with my rental... I think the metro would make it. It had better clearance and more suspension travel. And you don't need 4 wheel drive for that one.
Can't wait until TFL gets their greasy hands on a Rivian Truck😍
Maybe once. I hope there is a charger and a repair tech at the top. Lol
I grew up on a farm. Drove 2 wheel drive pick-ups, cars through mud and dirt. Learned how to avoid getting stuck. The idea is to avoid dangerous terrain unless you're in the military.
Love the Polizei Shirt! Isn't Tesla's warrenty void when you take it off road?
If the car is damaged by taking it off road, yes. As long as it's not damaged, the warranty will remain.
What the f*ck of a shit warranty is that hahaha?
I know Rivan is setting their truck up for off-roading. 400 miles range, higher ride height, 4 independent motors for true 4 wheel drive, possibly some other things. Defiantly give that a review when it comes out.
Today, we take a car based sports luxury crossover on an off road trail. 🤷♂️
mtnman1984 dude. Do you even know what crossover comes from?
@Pedro Henrique At 4x the price it better
R P Yes. They are jacked up hatchbacks and station wagons.
Oof Nibbingson Jagologogogog At four times the price of a Touareg? It’s not built to compete with it. Good lord.
@@mtnman1984 I'm talking to the guy who was comparing a rolls with a tesla model x
I know you guys have looked for tires, but if you drop down to the 19" wheels, you CAN get Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires in a 255/50R19, thats about .4" smaller in diameter, so you wont have to worry about that upper control arm, and about .4" narrower, not Ideal, and they aren't a crazy all terrain tire, but they are much better than a highway all season.
The real question is, can you go slower?
lenard ggor son’s pretty annoying lol
The Tesla X is basically a sedan with an inflated body. Kudos for trying to take it up that but probably not the best idea. Might as well try off roading a Subaru WRX up that. Lol
I love that he wears a Polizei-Shirt.
Any germans here watching this?
Simon R jawohl
If they could rebuild the suspension system with a better lift for ground and tire clearance... they'd be in business!
I wonder how much mpg it got going downhill on REgen
Btw Tesla has titanium plate protection underneath
It shouldnt break under slow crawl like that,,
Still I d wait for Tesla truck to do off roading
My brothers model x can handle most of our Michigan seasonal loggers roads as long as they aren't torn up. I'd say 70-80 Percent of them. There are a few crazy ones to avoid but it can be a ton of fun to off-road in a model x as long as you don't take the trails that are too crazy or rocky.
Mother of God! I need a nap! That was *so* nerve-wracking to watch! Scared the hell out of me several times! *whew*
The secret is the engine.
Is much easyer to control electronically an electric motor than a combustion motor.
With an inverter and an a brushless motor you can to micrometric movement.
Look at the video of tesla on snow hill climb vs an hummer.it’s amazing.
There’s no wheel slip
And my Lada Niva sits, laughing at the top :D But well done tesla. gj guys, nice video!
Interresting to see how effortless the car can handle the terrain, thats the beginning... when there is a dedicated offroader bev the days of dinosaur-burning v8's are over.
I sincerely doubt it will happen like that. People have been calling the v8's death since the 1980s. They are too reliable and well built. Plus Ford just released a 7.3L na gasser and Chevy is going for a 6.6 gasser as well. Pushrod V8s are just too simple and reliable to die in America.
I need (would love) to see you do this type of stuff with a first or second generation honda CRV, that's basically a honda civic with awd. Plus if you accidentally hit that you won't have a serious bill.
I kept thinking,..." you guys have to go DOWN that hill soon." then you answered this too.
This was a 'clincher' for sure,..but enjoyable,... from my office chair!
This made me love my Jeep that much more.
You folks keep saying "I don't know if the car has any underbody protection". You could have asked. It does. The whole undercarriage is a thick TITANIUM shield. Unless you hit it hard enough that it would break any other off-roader, you don't have to worry (the Model S shield used to be aluminum early on, but they replaced them after the first fire where a metal object punctured the shield and the battery pack). So you are fairly well protected.
It's almost as if the Model X was never designed as an offroad vehicle...
I see what you did here... 😂🤣
😂
It's almost as if it's referred to as an SUV as is the Touareg...
Its a suv it should be able to handle small offroad tf
Hey guys! You should pick up an OBD2 reader and get OBD Link. It can monitor the voltage resistance in the accelerator pedal. Itll leave a red indicator at the point of highest demand on the throttle. I think that would be a cool parameter to add to this slip section.
Man, you guys love that VW. Any excuse to get it out there, I love it!
While there isn't really an off-road option for the X (and may never be, given limits discussed in the video) consider the Michelin Crossclimate. Been running on them since last fall and they're phenomenal in snow (and rain) at least. They'll likely do just fine in sand and will probably have something to offer in mud as well but I haven't tested them there. Pretty great tire, and they make them in the right size profile.
I kinda wish the Tesla Model X had some off-road capability.
Why? Convert your Jeep. It'll probably be cheaper and more capable in one fell swoop. BOSCH is apparently making a drop in axle that has the electric motors and gear reduction built in, I've heard of electric hub motors that basically replace your brake calipers, and lots of people have just put a tesla motor in whatever they could.
mica davis *imo* Imagine how cool it would be to rock climb in a Tesla. No noise, just you, a quite box of steel and nature. Enough space to sleep in the car and have all your luggage, “refueling” with a solar panel while sleeping or while doing camping stuff. Idk it just seems like a very peaceful and fun time.
@@antoineemond4013 that would be pretty awesome, especially if you have a solar panel setup for recharging the batteries. I just prefer to have total control over my vehicle and the ability to modify it as I see fit. I've seen a number of videos on here that detail various problems with trying to fix your own tesla or modify one. I've modified my truck so much that I can barely imagine getting something that I can't modify. Then there's the 4x4. I'm not sure if it'll have a real part or full time four wheel drive system. It seems more likely that it'll have a computer controlled all wheel drive system with the traction control. There's a great video from Ronnie Dahl (I'm pretty sure I spelled that right) about the actual difference between four wheel and all wheel drive and why all wheel drive is only really good for well maintained dirt roads. Because of all this, it is my opinion that a person who loves offroading would be better off modifying a legitimate four wheeler like that sweet jeep in your thumbnail or my 93 pathfinder to have an electric motor tied in to the mechanical four wheel drive system. Actually, I'm slightly more interested in the prospect of hydrogen fuel since electrolysis is easily accomplished and lots of people who rock crawl have altered their ICE to burn propane because they will run while they're upside down on an actual gaseous fuel. Then there's the Bollinger SUV, which is hideously overpriced but it looks like a truck and the guys who designed it actually go four wheeling. Some of my favorite videos feature various gas burning cars that have been tesla swapped.
I think the Telsa X has a Titanium plate under the bateries, Tesla did that to the Model S after some problems, so it would be logical to have it on the Model X as well
www.greencarreports.com/news/1091366_life-with-tesla-model-s-battery-safety-shield-in-detail-photos . in the front it seems , And that make sense. its meant to protect against incoming things on the road hitting in high speed and deflect from the battery, not protect against point rocks banging into the batter like in off road. Covering the whole underside of the battery with titanium plates would be fairly expensive
The batteries do have armor plating protecting the underside
And yet they blow up from scraping the curb
@@savagetuner2404 They do not blow up from scrapes...
Jared Scott yeah they do. My friend’s burned to a crisp from going over a 2x4. It was a model 3
DrScopeify exactly. A full body skid plate isn’t great but it would certainly help with turning the Tesla into a proper off-roader.
But has it been tested like dropping the whole 5000 lbs of vehicle on a large boulder?
Congratulations! No Model X was harmed in the filming of this event.
Less road clearance = more adventure, or at least more adrenaline rush.
Can a Model X offroad? Only in a zombie apocalypse.
Why would you even risk scratching one of those electric turds after it took 413 months and $600,000 to fix your other Teslacle
Exactly. They're too much of a headache. Even a VW is a model of durability and ease of maintenance compared to this turd.
I must say, I am so glad you guys are doing real world tests like this in an "offroad capable" electric vehicle. This gives a real indication of what is to come when these new electric trucks starting hitting the road(trails?)
Doesnt taking the model x offroad void the warranty? And shouldnt that tell people it's not an suv?
who thinks SUV's are supposed to be off-road vehicles? 99.999% only ever go to the grocery store and soccer practice..
@@Turk380 idk. For some reason I have this idea there should be some sort of sport utility to an SUV.
The most unbelievable thing is that very car is capable of going up that terrain all while being able to dart from 0-60 in 2.7 seconds! Unheard of versatility!
Why didn't you lift the Tesla and/or give it some off road tires, this is a highly non effective test. Ya'll bogus
Anything called an "SUV" should be ready to go from the factory. What's bogus, is calling a soccer mom vehicle...an SUV just because it sort of LOOKS like a real truck.
@@yourhandlehere1 that's bill shit. There are lots of crossover SUVs that are not off road cars, but more modern minivan.
Heck there are also minivans that are great at offroad.
The style of the car does not necessarily dictate what type a driving the car is designed for.
@@frojoe2004 "crossover". that's another funny one. A cross between a minivan and a ...what? They don't go offroad and they don't have much room. How is it a crossover when it does neither job it's supposed to cross between?
But you basically just said the same thing I did. There are too many vehicles called things that they are not.
Crossovers aren't suvs and neither crossovers nor that stupid volkswagen NOR this sedan-with-a-higher-belt-line-than-my-88-year-old-grandfather look anything remotely like a REAL truck.
