    Discord seems more Chaotic Neutral to me. He doesn't take pleasure in harming others, and doesn't go out of his way specifically to do so. He just tampers with the laws of physics because that's how he likes it, and he feel's comfortable that way, but he doesn't seem that malicious.

      I just think it was to obsessed with her loyalty to the state.. It was also the system she thrived on and lead to more power. Taking credit for other people's shit. Bought out her father so she could call herself a pure blood. It wasn't restricted to people who didn't agree with her. It was whatever got in her way. Humans weren't better than other races, it was she was better than everyone else.. But the further it diverged from the image of herself it was an enemy. Or beautiful she would torture because she enjoyed it. I am not even a big fan of Harry potter but she is a great example of lawful evil.

    I played in an evil campaign, where one of the player's idea of Lawful Evil was literally saying, "My character is lawful, so I don't let you do that."
    What "that" was was usually anything evil, regardless of whether it was against the law or not.

    This is an interesting Idea of seeing lawful evil as selfishly principled. So, how about Ayn Rand? I know she was an actual person and this is a conversation about fantasy characters; but lets think about this idea in relationship to her work. I mean, she openly advocated that the selfishness is a virtue and that altruism is the root of all true evil. For her, a selfless person is by definition not principled. Would a character with her mentality be considered lawful evil?

      No. Her ethics is based on the standard of human flourishing. That which improves the life of the individual in the long-run, in a non-sacrificial way, is properly selfish and good. That which impedes or retards human flourishing (for the individual) is evil, and is the result of altruism. Altruism itself being the ethics of sacrifice (of one's self and others); altruism is not about being kind or considerate or magnanimous towards others.

    Other examples I can think of in this category would be the Enclave as a whole in the Fallout series, and an inspiration for GLaDOS with the Hal-9000 from 2001. The Enclave care only about preserving what's left of pre-war America, even if that means eliminating thousands of people, while HAL has the goal of preserving the mission, at any cost.

    My alignment spectrum is order vs freedom. Lawful believes that order is better than freedom (sometimes they could think that freedom is stupid), and Chaotic believes that freedom is better (again, they could think that order is stupid).
    Good believes in helping others, and evil believes in only helping the self (They could be actively malicious but they don't have to).
    Neutral from law/chaos would mean that they value both order and freedom, and neutral from good/evil believes in helping yourself and taking your best interests, but are driven to a moral code.

      GuildMasterDan, You are quite welcome, sir.
      I've played since... well... I still have 1st ed. AD&D books in a foot-locker from my youth...lolz. And while I never seemed to find it difficult to understand Alignment, nor were explanations in actual physical society hard to get to, the overwhelming presentation on YT is really a fail. It shouldn't be a difficult concenpt, Evil=ego-centric, Good=socio--centric... It's simple, and being a core fiber, justifies motivation, but isn't really worth more than a couple letters as a reminder when justifying actions to the GM at the post-session "debriefing" or some meta-questionnaire occasion...
      So I am only truly DELIGHTED to find even one presenter on YT who can so succinctly manage to state that basis without trying to make "rocket-science" of the thing. It deserves a kind comment, and I'll be scrounging through more videos to determine about what proverbial "page" you've gotten to while I continue to form my research into potential futures regarding my other varied projects. I finally have a YT-channel to send references to in other conversations... Don't forget to breathe and relax once in a while, but do KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK... :o)

    I had a character which I called Lawful Evil, but I'm not sure what alignment he really was...
    He was a cleric who served an evil god for his own selfish means, and was often plotting to get ahead, at the cost of the others. One of the best examples of this is at about the end of our campaign, where my character collapsed the cave that the rest of his party was still looting, then went to the quest giver, gave him a sorry sob story pretending to be a good cleric who lost his friends thanks to a sudden collapse, then got the reward of not only himself, but the rest of the party, then left before the rest escaped the cave and went back to the questgiver, only to find that their reward had been taken and the thief was long gone! So... He's not really principled, as much as subtly selfish, and I want to know whether that makes sense for a Lawful Evil character.

    What evil means isn't selfishness obviously because selflessness for something else or malice is much more evil. For lawful evil, it means taking lawfulness and order in the wrong direction of what is commonly considered like tyranny or abusive of power or harshly punitive, it isn't in selfishness especially for lawful because the actions are mostly what is considered will bring about the best result and history has shown us that ruthlessness does work. It's more complicated than that but that's a general idea.

    I'm currently playing a "lawful evil" character, who is a shadow monk. Basically, I'm playing a scout / spy / instert X type character as of now. And the way I'm being lawful evil - is "I shall always obligate myself to the deal... the way it can be interpreted". Basically, my character uses the "deal" or "contract" to expand on his possbilities to create evil. "Escort a group X to a city nearby" - sure I would. However, escorting - means "making sure they would get there alive". From that - getting a girl from a group raped or some stuff stolen (by someone from the outside of course, I don't want filth on my own hands) is a no-brainer :D.

    In dim Carcosa, only one thing matters. A Chaotic creatures serves and aids the Great Ones, a Neutral creature just tries to stay out of the awful mess and Lawful creatures oppose them. Nothing else matters, a PC could sacrifice 101 dolm children to seal a dark spawn and be entirely Lawful. A Chaotic leader could lead her tribe with noble example in all, in honour of the eldritch spawn of the swamps. All morality pales before the vastness of Azathoth in its unthinking, endless dance.

    I would say another interesting take on Lawful Evil is David Xanatos. On the outside he might seem like a light shade of Chaotic Evil or a darker take on Chaotic Good, but this is a man who has planned for every contingency, is almost only concerned with his welfare, and Fox's but it took him a long time before he could see it in himself. Hell, he even told her he loved her as much as a man like him could. He keeps his promises and is distinctly playing by specific rules even if he's the only one who sees the rules.

    I think that Monokuma from the Danganronpa series is a great example of this. He's a sadistic robot bear that enjoys seeing teenagers get murdered and loves executing the rule breakers, but he sets clear rules for himself to make the game "fun" and is very clear NOT to break these rules except in one circumstance, and even then it was a WERID murder case. So while he loves seeing people die and is the headmaster at his killing school, no one, not even himself, can break the rules clearly set, because, in his eyes, there would no longer be a point to the murders, no point to the despair he wants so badly.

      If the authority tells you to kill you kill..
      Instead of having ethical or moral standards in your life like good characters or a might is right mentality like evil, you adapt to wherever you go and follow a bit of both..
      Lawful neutral is the survivalist alignment, they are the ones that adapt the best to another culture by assimilating it without judgement. They can live in both evil and good cultures..

    Is this suggesting that Darkseid is Lawful Neutral, or does he still fit into Lawful Evil? I mean, he considered that he lost when a person was on their knees begging, rather than considering that he'd won, because he would never accept that he'd won under such circumstances being against his code.

    • @SetzerII
      @SetzerII 7 років тому +1

      Darkseid wants absolute control over the universe (via the anti-life equasion, but still) and regularly engages in pretty much every act defined as evil in D&D while running a planet as the logical extreme of fascist dictatorship. In other words, I don't think the OP was considering comic book-levels while making this video, but Darkseid is absolutely lawful evil - in the classic "his law" sense.

    This made me stop and consider one of my characters. Why does a lawful evil paladin, who does not honor any gods _need_ to be principled? What is it that keeps his enormous ego in check?
    Superiority! He is what he is, because of the need to feel superior. His standards, his discipline and principles are what elevate him over the unwashed masses. His entire being is centered around a feeling of superiority and he will ensure that others see this in him too. No matter how selfish he is, his behavior always has to confirm to standards where others respect him, even if they disagree.
    Thus, what limits his ego, is his own ego.

  • @davidioanhedges

    Unfortunately you new definition actually encompasses every Paladin willing to kill for the greater good ... i.e. all of them

    • @theuncalledfor
      @theuncalledfor 3 роки тому

      Wrong.
      A lawful good paladin willing to kill for the greater good, may not enjoy killing. It is not a selfish thing. Their goal is to create a better world, a better society, so that more people can be safe and happy. That is what it _means_ to do something for the greater good.
      You can convince them to do evil acts by deceiving them into thinking that those acts will ultimately be a massive net benefit for everyone, even if it hurts them, themselves.
      That is selfless, regardless of the outcome. Principled selfless.
      Note that a selfish principled/lawful evil character might ultimately act in the same way, not for the benefit of others but because they desire to see such a society, and live in it. They will sacrifice their short term happiness, even risk death or worse, because to them the goal is so appealing that the risk is worth it. But they would _never_ sacrifice their own life for the cause, because then they cannot achieve their goal of actually living in the society they want to create. They also don't care how many innocent people they trample over in pursuit of this "perfect" society, because it's not about saving others, it's about achieving a goal for their own selfish benefit. A lawful good paladin would question whether the goal is worth it if too many innocents get trampled on the way to achieving it, even if they're willing to make those sacrifices for the greater good in principle.

    I suspect that a character I am making for a game is Lawful Evil, but I just want to make sure.
    My character is a Kobold Bushwacker (An archtype of the gunslinger that can fire off sneak attacks and can regain grit by killing the unaware or helpless) that belonged to a tribe that was visited by a dragon that offered to become their patron in exchange for a once off payment of 90% of the tribes eggs as a show of loyalty (To be followed by the standard tribute and worship that is the relationship between Dragon and Kobold).
    This offer divided the tribe between the chieftain and his loyalists who believed that earning the alliance of a dragon would benefit the tribe in the long run more then the eggs they had to offer to get it and those who believed that losing so many of their unborn young at once was to great a price and would put the tribe in a really bad position that even having a dragon as a ally wouldn't bail them out of. My character was a member of the latter group.
    The civil war lasted a few days before the Chief ordered a number of the tunnels and chambers that belonged to the tribe to be caved in, crushing and burying most of the rebels completely. The loyalists then went ahead and made the offering of the eggs, only for the dragon to turn around and start killing them after it had eaten the offering as a twisted joke. A few of them escaped but the tribe was pretty much dead and gone by that point.
    My character is an adventurer having survived the civil war and his motivation for being one is to hunt down and brutally torture and murder every single remaining 'Loyalist' that escaped the dragon just so he can have the personal satisfaction of knowing that they died painfully for their stupidity. If possible, he also plans to murder the dragon that started the whole mess in the first place.
    He is not doing this for justice since to his knowledge he is the only remaining 'Rebel' left and justice is meaningless to the dead. He also knows that killing them won't make the pain go away. He is doing it solely because he has nothing else to life for and he is hoping that once they are all dead the next step of what he should do with his live will present itself.
    If you had to write an alignment down, what would you pick for him?

    • @GuildmasterDan
      @GuildmasterDan  10 років тому

      Well, I'm flattered that you decided to ask. Having read over your description I definitely agree that your Kobold is evil. He's motivated by selfish desires, and puts his need for revenge over the well-being of others. That being said, I don't see any indication of Lawful or Chaotic behavior. I would say the archetype leans towards Chaotic in that it seems to describe someone who values success over honor. So, to help you figure out where he falls on that spectrum, let me ask you this. What principles does your kobold hold himself accountable to? Does he limit himself in any way? Is he so obsessed with revenge that he refuses to use his ammunition on anyone but his desired victims? Does he refuse to kill the young or those who are not his desired targets? Or does he even care? Is every death he dispenses on the way to his goal meaningless?
      If he has a personal discipline in the form of principles that he allows to/purposefully uses to limit his behavior? If so, then he would be Lawful. If it's the opposite, that he believes in nothing beyond sating his thirst for revenge, then he's Chaotic. Or, is it more ambiguous than that? Does he have principles, but is unsure why he follows them so he only does so sometimes? In this ambiguous case, then he'd be Neutral.
      Also remember that this assignment of alignment is only how the world initially looks at him, and not a guide for his behavior. As his character develops he can and likely will shift. Best to not concern yourself with it after you decide your starting alignment. Just focus on the characters ambitions, and motivations.

    No examples of player-friendly principled but selfish hero characters? Perhaps someone motivated by a jealous desire to get the attention of someone dear to him/her (such as a love interest, family member, or ruler), possibly even a yandere, would be a fitting candidate for such a principled but selfish hero character? One such example would probably be Amy Rose from Sonic the Hedgehog. Sure, she may be one of the heroes, but her motivations are rather self-serving (as she vies for the love and affection of her hero, Sonic the Hedgehog).

    Looking at this page
    easydamus.com/lawfulevil.html
    It compares Lawful Evil to Palladium's Aberrant Alignment I think they're not exactly the same, because in the TMNT RPG, Casey Jones Alignment is listed as Aberrant, (This RPG was made when the comic was only four issues in) In the early issues of the comic I feel Aberrant is a good description of the Mirage Comics Casey Jones (Not so much any Kid Friendly Adaptations of the character) I feel Casey Jones is not Principled Selfish I feel Casey Jones always had selfless intentions but due to mental and emotional problems had a warped sense of what was wrong with the world and was going about it all wrong.
    So I feel Palladium's Aberrant is slightly different then Lawful Evil because it includes characters who care for others but go about evil means to protect them...So I'm not sure what D&D Term there is for 'Well Intentioned Extremist Villain'

      +Godsraptor Hmm, I guess if I had to give Drogo an alignment I'd say Neutral Evil. He doesn't really believe in anything that isn't itself contradictory to having disciplines, and he is definitely driven by his personal desires over the desire to help others. Sure he might throw a bone now and then, but one good act does not a saint make.

    When she decided to set Chell free becuse of aucum's rasor, that may have been chaotic-netral. (It would be good had she done it out of mercy, but she only did it to get Chell out of her metiphorical hair.) Althoguh, you could argue it's it's more lawfull or netral becuse she used a famous philisophical quote as a reason.

      TravistheGREAT03 Hi, I'm even later, and my opinion on this probably doesn't have as much to back it up as this video's creator. However, I would say so. He tries to keep Rapture running and maintain order, and commits evil to do so. He certainly isn't good or chaotic, and he isn't neutral enough to be considered any type of neutral.

    The selfish/selfless interpretation of the good/evil axis just doesn't work.
    Take, for example, the case of a man who murders an innocent stranger, loots their dead body, and gives all the money he took from their corpse to a random homeless beggar sleeping in the street. Clearly the man did what he did for a completely selfless reason. He didn't know either the victim nor the beggar, so he gets no satisfaction out of killing the stranger, nor from donating to the beggar, nor could he ever realistically expect any reward in the future since the beggar wouldn't even know who he is (since he was both sleeping and a complete stranger). Moreover, he also didn't keep any of the money or possessions he took from the victim's dead body, so he gained no material wealth from his act either.
    Now, is the man's murder and looting of the corpse of the innocent stranger a good or evil act? If one defines good and evil simply as selfless and selfish, then one would have to say that it was a good act, but this is clearly absurd. Thus to equate good and evil with selfless and selfish is manifestly fallacious.

    • @Njilin
      @Njilin 8 років тому

      That character probably a chaotic evil character, no matter his motivations or how "selfless" it is, the fact of the matter is that he murdered an innocent stranger in cold blood, without any actual cause or reason. He had no motive, and there was other ways to get the "loot" but he chose the most inhuman and cruelest way possible.
      One simple act of kindness and compassion cannot negate an act like murder. No neutral or good characters would do this, killing without rhyme or reason is something that only evil people do, for this example to make sense one therefore HAS to assume that the man in question is evil. He killed on a whim, completely apathetic to the suffering he inflicted on that strangers family, and in taking a human life.

    I have an analogy, fee; free to correct it if you see fit:
    Lawful characters are like people cutting a deck of cards.
    The lawful good character will cut the deck in your favor.
    The lawful evil character will cut the deck in their favor.
    The lawful neutral character will cut the deck in everyone's favor.

    • @radarreally2110
      @radarreally2110 8 років тому +2

      I'm agraid that doesn't work so well. You can't cut a deck either fairly or unfairly. Now Shuffling... But a lawful good character would not shuffle a deck in anyone's favor, because he would be too interested in playing the game without cheating, but he may throw a game or two to make their opponent feel better about themselves.

  • @Cookie_85

    Would Talia al Ghul fit?

    • @GuildmasterDan
      @GuildmasterDan  8 років тому

      +Kashim85 Actually, I'd argue that Talia, at least from the Batman Animated Series (can't speak to comics that well, and wouldn't necessarily work for the movie version), is more Lawful Neutral. Is she a villain? Yes. She does bad things. Is she evil, not necessarily, but she's not good either. She has a softer heart than her father for innocents, and she loves Bruce Wayne, BUT she is 100% devoted to her father. She does have her own morals and desires, but she allows none to stand in the way of her father's cause. She forgoes any personal motivations for the sake of her father's machinations. She's almost a cross between both examples I give in that video. She has some selfless motivations, but she won't act on them without her father's blessing. At the same time, her father may be evil (Lawful Evil), but she follows out of devotion rather than selfish motivation.

    I have been a little bit uncomfortable with your principled/unprincipled divide sense you introduced it, and at this point I think you are straining it to the breaking point. Worse, I think I know where you are going with LN, and I'm not going to like it much.
    The big problem with claiming that any set of principles is a lawful set of principles, even if they are the principles of an insane person, is that at some point you are going to hit a set of principles that are so internalized as to be unknowable and unreviewable. If a person's principles are only subject to the review of their own consciousness, and the person is taking themselves as the highest moral authority, then it's not going to be possible for an external observer to know whether they are following their principles correctly or not. Once principles become unfalsifiable like that, they are indistinguishable from having no principles. At some point, a purely personal moral code is indistinguishable from whim.
    The other problem I see is that unlike the moral ambiguity you had for CN, you are about to cast LN in to a place where the actors can be objectively evil. After all, there does seem to be room for self-sacrificing evil.
