  • Taking apart the head I recently got from a 1995 S350 (W140). This is a number 20 head (part number 603-016-20-01) and today I'm taking the valves out.
I am very light on experience with this - learning as we go. I'm not sure which parts to keep and which to buy new. I'm still trying to find part numbers for everything. My number 14 head is OK for the moment - the goal is to refurbish this one and have it on standby.

Great. Thanks for sharing. U lucky u found that head. It also has the latest precombustion chambers. Ideally they also want the latest injector nozzles. Wish I could find a 20 head.

You're very welcome! It's going to be a challenge to rebuild. I do have the injectors freshly rebuilt (should arrive today). The prechambers cleaned up nicely! I got a head gasket kit which includes the crash washers for prechambers, head shields, and more. Now the challenge is finding the valves and lifters. Once I get all the parts sorted, I'll find a machine shop and hopefully, it's reasonable price-wise! I just want to have everything on-hand to share with them.
Keep an eye out on eBay - I've seen a handful of #17, #20, and #22 heads pop up over time. This one I scored for $500 😎 Buying the parts to rehab is costly and challenging though - I'm trying to ONLY buy genuine MB parts, unless there is no other choice. Thanks for watching! More to come soon

@@bsclifton Triple check if the valves really need replacement. I noticed zero wear on the valve guides when u pulled the valves. Next thing shop is going to want to replace the valve seats. And u know the replacement might not be so good. Be warned.
