    Thanks man. Looks great. Currently working in Octane Blender.. Things are a little bit different but your tutorial really helps with the importing into da vinci and the colour management settings in da vinci.. That's the most important part for me.. So thanks again!!

    None of this is about how it looks. ACES is only meant to equalize your input colors, not for grading! You don't choose your ODT based on what you prefer, you chose it based on what your monitor is, and if you prefer the output to look different you are supposed to grade it

      This is absolutely true. I know there is still a lot of work that needs to happen to blenders color management before Aces is truly integrated into blender. In my professional work I have stopped using it due to color matching for client work. For artistic purposes it is interesting

      @@GlassHandFilms If you decided to use aces and don’t wanna do any arbitrary colour guess work, you shouldn’t select P3 as your output transform unless you are view it with a P3 projector. ACES is truly integrated into Blender, you just have to tweak the config file according to the blender manual. Also you can delete a lot of the colour transforms that you don’t need as the list is way too big to show in blender. I would put the customized ocio files into blender colour management folder instead of have it in the environment variable, because it would than mess up all other applications.

    Great video with great information! To my eye, ACES looks more "finished" with regard to color grading, while filmic almost looks like log footage from a camera that's meant for color grading

    or you can use raw, and apply tonemap node in compositing, results are great , and without color damping.
    the main problem of filmic is desaturation which you cant even change from compositing tab, what is bad, so you need to export image to saturate it or chose raw instead.

    ACES. YES!!
    One thing. You really shouldn't be changing around the view transform. That should be set to the color space of your display, generally sRGB for most people, perhaps Rec.709/2020 for those with pro displays.
    The view transform doesn't get included in the render. So even if the view transform "looks nice" you're not going to be getting that in the render.

    • @GlassHandFilms
      @GlassHandFilms  3 роки тому +1

      Ahhh thank you for the comment. Just to clarify, since P3d60 is a colorspace specific to certain monitors, we should only be concerned with colorspaces that our displays support? Makes sense to me. I've still got a lot to explore with ACES. I'll continue my workflow and improvements and share here on this channel. Thank you for leaving the comment! Cheers!

      @@GlassHandFilms I made a slight mistake there. Confused my own damn self.
      Blender has both display and view color transforms. It's the DISPLAY transform you want to simply set to your monitor's space (sRGB most likely). The VIEW transform does indeed affect the output, and is meant (I think) to achieve a "look" with the render. However, this is REALLY something done post render.
      Oddly, Blender's Display Color Transform has no options for professional Rec 709/2020/etc monitors. .. In fact, there's no options for Rec709./2020/etc ANYWHERE in Blender by default. Only after installing ACES.
      My bad. I hate giving out misinformation. I forgot Blender has both of those. Most other software (to the best of my knowledge) doesn't.
      It's actually slightly confusing that Blender has both, IMO.
      Be well. :D

    • @shebbe

      @@artao5 When you have ACES enabled in Blender the only available display device is ACES. The view transfrom should always be set to whatever your monitor is calibrated at. So sRGB is the proper choice not P3D60 which is meant for cinema projectors. You don't render the view transform with your exrs. These are rendered in ACEScg and are linear. Also in Resolve the output transform is set incorrect. This should be rec.709 for video because that is the colorspace for SDR when rendering to H264. It should always be the output display you're creating the content for not a choice of look.

    • @GlassHandFilms
      @GlassHandFilms  3 роки тому

      Hmmm I'm not sure what you mean. OCIO is shown in the video by setting up an environment variable in windows. Then you pick your view transform under color management in blender. You also have to tell OCIO what color space your 2d textures are in. After that you just render and use the exr's in post applications like Resolve or fusion

    You don't need to setup environment variable for using aces in blender. /watch?v=B7FWNNDXBl0 with this method you can make two version of blender, one with ACES and one is default.
    ACES is really good but... there's some problems with it in blender, one of them is that RGB wheel stops working properly, that's why I gave up on using ACES in blender. How do you deal with that?
    EDIT: whaaaa... it seem's to work with your method 😮 alright, need to test that more
    EDIT2: Nope, it is still going crazy. Damn!

    • @GlassHandFilms

      You are correct about the rgb values. In Arnold and other render engines you can correctly input a color in the correct space. I'm hoping that will come soon in blender. And yes you can manually set the color management for versions of blender but I feel the environment variable works really well with other applications. Especially fusion and resolve. Trying to find that configuration file every time is so annoying. Cheers!
