The magic man himself has done it again! You totally ROCKED this effect for us! It was a pleasure working with ya. Oh and... RIP sock phone... Gone, but never forgotten.
why doing all these extra steps? u could just import the video as a plane and make everything in blender and render the finished thing there, i dont understand the benefits of compositing neither in fusion nor in blender, cause colour correction and so on u can still do with the renderd video
I love the transition to Resolve. Resolves color grading and compositing features are greattt. I started using it few months ago and I fell in love with it. And for those who are wandering, its free version is completely enough, especially for people starting out. I belive the free version is only restricted by some minor effects and exporting in 8K or mayby it was 4K... Idk. The thing is, it doesnt have water marks or any weird restrictions like some other "trail" versions of some "softwares" for editing have. it is great! :)
7:31 I know you warned that this color workflow is not the ideal approach, but I'll just say anyway for academic purposes that it's generally more correct to convert the footage to linear, rather than the CG elements to log. That way everything is still composited in the same linear space. Then, either convert to log on output (when rendering DPX) or leave linear (when rendering EXR).
This channel is just... just perfection. You always come around with the exact topics I mess around with in the exact same software, it's like magic. I've discovered the magic of Fusion a little while ago and I'm diving deep into it these days, so I'm curious to see what kind of tutorials you'll come up with for it in the future! @@InLightVFX YES! Although this is advanced for my DR level right now; I picked up on several things I did not know about; which will help me get to this level.
This is the best introduction to Fusion that I've seen. Comparing Fusion back to Blender really helps. I had no idea you could set Fusion up to work in a vertical orientation like Natron or Nuke. We use Resolve as our primary editor. Looks like we'll have to give it a run for comp as well. Thanks for the helpful video!
Hey Steve. I'm glad the comparison was helpful. Yes, Fusion's nodes are quite flexible in the orientation. I wish it was more built for vertical-only and sometimes the connections can get a bit wacky. But overall it's easy to stay organized. Hope you find Fusion helpful in your workflow!
I feel like it's worth noting that Fusion existed long before DaVinci, and was formerly known as eyeon Fusion, and it was competing with Nuke for a while. As a matter of fact it's history dates back to 1987 with it's first public release in 1996, while Nuke was released in 1993, so it's a very mature compositor and not something new in the market.
Davinci Resolve is really an underdog. I used to edit video using Premier and After Effect, then i know that Davinci can do both, whoop i end my Adobe subscription. Haha
thanx alot , this video definitly makes one understand the basic concept and usage of the fusion tab / fusion. I was hesitent to use resolve for anything besides basic video editing , but this makes everything crystal clear.
fusion has so much potential as a Nuke replacement, but I still prefer how quickly Nuke can detect EXR layers and create new render layers. I hope blackmagic continues to support it and maybe one day there will be actual competition for Nuke!
I dunno. I use both and they both have their +'s and -'s. But the resolve 17 live announcement shocked me. they did 99 percent on resolve and like 2 minutes on fusion. which worries me. if they drop support for fusion there will be a lot of very upset people
Fusion used to be incredibly expensive as well 20 years ago (it's actually older, than Nuke). But the downfall of the previous owner, let Fusion fall behind.

Really great video! I've watched it more than once when working on a composite project. Question: When we turn off the Viewer LUT 11:52 what are we looking for to make sure we doing things right?
Thanks! The viewer LUT in this case is really just a way to preview how things look with a rough color grade applied. It's more of an aesthetic check than a technical one. Good luck with your project!
The first video I've seen from you, it's great stuff! I can't get my head around people compositing in Blender. If I'm being generous, I'd call Blender compositing garbage but fine for REALLY basic comp tasks. I've always recommended either using fusion or Nuke non-commercial.

Hmm I'm not sure I'm seeing what you mean. But I also don't have a lot of masking experience in Blender. Still, Fusion's masking tools are quite extensive and I know they have a lot of features Blender does not (that I didn't go into).
