    I love the transition to Resolve. Resolves color grading and compositing features are greattt. I started using it few months ago and I fell in love with it. And for those who are wandering, its free version is completely enough, especially for people starting out. I belive the free version is only restricted by some minor effects and exporting in 8K or mayby it was 4K... Idk. The thing is, it doesnt have water marks or any weird restrictions like some other "trail" versions of some "softwares" for editing have. it is great! :)

    7:31 I know you warned that this color workflow is not the ideal approach, but I'll just say anyway for academic purposes that it's generally more correct to convert the footage to linear, rather than the CG elements to log. That way everything is still composited in the same linear space. Then, either convert to log on output (when rendering DPX) or leave linear (when rendering EXR).

    This is the best introduction to Fusion that I've seen. Comparing Fusion back to Blender really helps. I had no idea you could set Fusion up to work in a vertical orientation like Natron or Nuke. We use Resolve as our primary editor. Looks like we'll have to give it a run for comp as well. Thanks for the helpful video!

    • @InLightVFX
      @InLightVFX  4 роки тому +4

      Hey Steve. I'm glad the comparison was helpful. Yes, Fusion's nodes are quite flexible in the orientation. I wish it was more built for vertical-only and sometimes the connections can get a bit wacky. But overall it's easy to stay organized. Hope you find Fusion helpful in your workflow!

    • @nixellion
      @nixellion 3 роки тому +3

      I feel like it's worth noting that Fusion existed long before DaVinci, and was formerly known as eyeon Fusion, and it was competing with Nuke for a while. As a matter of fact it's history dates back to 1987 with it's first public release in 1996, while Nuke was released in 1993, so it's a very mature compositor and not something new in the market.

    fusion has so much potential as a Nuke replacement, but I still prefer how quickly Nuke can detect EXR layers and create new render layers. I hope blackmagic continues to support it and maybe one day there will be actual competition for Nuke!

    At 9:16 you mention that in Blender you can't create masks on the viewer node. Unless I'm missing what you mean, you effectively can just change from "View" to "Mask" inside the Viewer Window, hence allowing you draw the masks outside of the Movie Clip Editor.

    Very cool! With Fusion, can you do 3D camera tracking in it and then export that tracking data via a FBX or ABC file? I know you can in Blender....thanks!

    It would be interesting to see how this would be done in after effects.

      Doing multipass comp is equivalent to torture. Compositing is always better in any Node based software.

    quick aside, if you, in blender, mix the shader of the geometry to wich you projected your footage, with a holdout texture, with the lightpath info "is camera ray", you can skip all the masking work you did in fusion and save some render time

    • @InLightVFX
      @InLightVFX  4 роки тому

      That would definitely work. I just wanted a bit more control over the softness of the edges of my mask. And I also wanted to show how to create masks. But good point, that would be a faster approach and work just fine in a lot of cases.

      @@InLightVFX I use it a lot with moving footage, where the time saved is even greater because you dont need to animate the masks afterwards

    Yeah, this is also my workflow. Making Stuff in Blender and then keep it over to Fusion - especially because of the real-time-playback.

    Great Job, I surely dive in to it! ...why don't you use ACES workflow as you teach in the last videos?

    • @InLightVFX
      @InLightVFX  4 роки тому +1

      Great question! ACES is a great workflow but when you convert Blackmagic RAW footage into ACES there is no easy way to then convert it out of ACES back to what the original image looked like. And I needed to deliver the shot essentially "ungraded" since the guys at Threefold had a specific color grading LUT that they wanted to apply to the unmodified RAW footage. It should be noted, ACES does not have this issue with other footage types but specifically Blackmagic RAW is difficult.

    1:50 if you're watching this now closer to when this comment is posted, theres great AI tools as well that can let you render at lower res and up-res them with AI, or render every other frame and fill in the gaps with AI. Worth trying out. Check out flowframes

    Quik note if you whant the LUT to work outside of Fusion co to the coler tab and go to notes in the top right right click om the note and at the LUT there and problem solved if you dont see any notes srt it from timeline to clip (clip shut be default )

    OHO!! So Fusion can finally directly read multi-layer .exr files? NICE!!
    Great tutorial BTW. Thanks. ........ Natron is also well worth checking out.

      Indeed it can read multi-layer! And thanks, Natron is definitely on my to-check-out list!
