  • ACES gets a lot of praise among post-production professionals, but the reality is that it's not the right fit for everyone. In this video we'll look at three reasons why you shouldn't use ACES.

Yaaay! :) I have a bunch of questions but I'll wait for the following videos and see how can I smart up. Many thanks!

👍 I've made it so far in your videos, looking forward to the rest. I love the practical and honest tips, no time is wasted on vague stuff. Your plugins look amazing, albeit way out of the price range I'm looking for.

I'm new to your channel, and so far very impressed in your cogent presentation style. I'm new to videography, and just acquired Resolve Studio 17. I've seen a couple of videos that talk about DaVinci's new color management system (DaVinci YRGB Color Managed selection in Project Settings / Color Managent, along with DaVinci Wide Gamut). My first reaction is that this is equivalent to ACES. If that is correct, then as you present ACES in your next series, could you also talk about the similarities / differences, and why one would chose one over the other. Great job! Keep it up.

Ive begun exploring what is understood in practicality in ACES workflow and it definitely has that feel of complicating the process of being an artist to put on an image grade vs plopping in raw footage and creating a look.

Hey there, sorry, i was just reflecting on first time experience trying to figure out the benifits of using the ACES system for camera RAW and then color grade vs being familiarized with how the footage behaves when color grading without ACES.

Love all the content you're putting out extremely extremely helpful but the background music man it just keeps going and going. Maybe try someone more soothing or maybe taking it out all together. Keep up the great work!

Same situation in CG workflow as well. But in CG, ACEs gives more color satuation, and a better highlight role off. Saturation can be added manually too, leaving better highlights as the only benefit. Drawback is the additional work of setting it up, and srgb colors behave oddly in ACEs space.

Thanks for the infos, really great and instructive contents! Id love join part 1, what is the best way to follow u and get the infos, instagram? in my case still a love and hate relationship working in aces, still a bit thrown off with the response of the panel... I've tried with DCTL, its great but its a complete new way of rethinking my creative process. Keep me posted for the infos if u can. Take care

Did you know what should I do in this case? I got a bunch of clips in BRAWs from BMPCC4k and 6k, and couple of drone shots with 10bit DLOG from DJI. I have configured project as ACES CC with No input transform and Rec709 output. Those drone shots looks really wierd. Something is wrong with auto conversion. Do you know how to make them usable, without messing with all the others?

I'm no expert at all but from what I've gathered from several YT and some forums videos is that you need to use DCTL (Black magics implementation of aces)and use a custom IDT/CTL that works with your color-space. I tested this right now and it seems like you need resolve studio for this to work. Not sure if this is helpful.

Number 1 drivers ed. "You don't understand color spaces and color management" - what does this mean? How much more do you need to understand after you have set up your project correctly and input transforms correctly etc. What do you need to understand to be able to use the tools in resolve efficiently?
My biggest problem with aces is how almost all tools suddenly feel different, how do you get used to that feel? And do you need a deep understanding of color science to get used to that feeling?

    • @NikHem343
      @NikHem343 Рік тому +1

Let me try to answer your question with the disclaimer of being on my own journey of understanding all this.
I think what this video tries to say foremost is that you should use ACES only if you actually understand what it does and what it's for. If you use ACES only because you "heard that it's how you do things" then you're probably set up for disaster.
I think if you understand Color Spaces, that there are differences between them and how these differences come to be, how to correctly transform footage between them and that it is advantageous to bring different color spaces into an intermediate color space (like ACES), then you're absolutely prepared to give it a shoot. If you understand those concepts then you can probably make good use of ACES and navigate issues that arise with it, like ARRI footage clipping weirdly in high luminance and saturation instances, requiring extra care.
About "getting used to it", I think it is just that, getting used to it.
      I hope this helps.

is there any way to create custom IDT?
I have a Nikon d5300 DSLR and cannot find IDT for it
It is the only DSLR I have and want to bring it into the ACES colorspace
    thanks in advance!

@@CullenKelly if you dont mind, can u tell me how u do it?
does it need extensive calibration/survey of images taken by the camera?
do i need something like colorchecker board??

Hmmm., I smell a whiff of condescension, especially on point 1. I know the material is challenging to master, but for the sake of those new to implementing and using color standards, you might consider recalibrating your pitch-or not. But thanks for the reminder of how important a first impression is.

Sheeeesh, this was the most blatant "reverse psychological", neuro linguistic programming salesman presentation, I've seen in a long time. Every point was packaged as a negative towards the viewer who may not want to go into aces, as a motivation to watch your videos. I don't know what kind of books you read or what seminars you attended, but this is youtube, my guy. Just be authentic and say what you need to say.
Edit: Btw, the shadows and banding in this video are horrendous!

@@CullenKelly I'll watch your videos regardless, since it doesn't change the fact that you offer valuable information I learn from. I'm not gonna pretend as if you weren't the pro and I wasn't a beginner. But that's exactly why I can't believe the low quality of this video. I didn't want to come off like an *sshole, but I stand by my critique.
