Love how they're diving into the lore much deeper than just a shallow dip. A movie for the fans.
Which is what the first Dungeons and Dragons movie failed to do. If the title hadn't said Dungeons and Dragons, you wouldn't have known it had anything to with the game. This one is vastly superior. Even if it is probably going to be a little campy.
@@mackenziehunter4593 lmao some poser shitbag didn't watch the movie. It was absolutely perfect to canon, which is why it was enjoyed by D&D players but not normie posers like you
I don't even play DnD, just have a passing fancy, but I'm all in on this movie.
In other words, its going to be a horrible movie
Lame.
This has been the most thorough review I have watched since the trailer came out!
Most of their videos are really good
This needs to become a franchise, like Warcraft should have
They should have just had someone who would follow the lore to a T for the Warcraft movie. It was a good movie but it could have been amazing
Thank you for clarifying that this movie is set in the Forgotten Realms. This is awesome.
They need to make a Dungeons & Dragons movie similar to the way the movie Jumanji worked, multiple characters, multiple situations and a combination of different scenarios that the characters need to work out.
D&D isn't comedy you poser
Yuck
@@Rick.Grayson
Well said, well spoken.
@@Rick.Grayson What a well-worded critique! Brilliant. Really points out the flaws in OP's comment
Misty step is one of my favorite spells. I love that they included all so many Easter eggs from the game.
Also, I need to see the bard wrecking face with magic.
Forgotten realms has to be one of the best and most fleshed out worlds of dungeons and Dragons.
I hope for a Dritzz Do Urden movie before I leave this world lmao!
Drow are going to be very hard to explain in live action to the general public.
@@nonnayerbusiness7704 The Navi were hard to explain... Tall blue people. They did just fine.
yea i ran a dragon of icespire peak campaign a while back so its cool to see neverwinter wood visualised
@@MooneShadow drow= "dark" elves = evil
Might not work well in the era of cancel culture.
@@theblaze5530 Dritzz do Urden is not evil. His family is but he combats that.
The druid could have multi-classed into a Wizard which could explain Dimension Door. Well, the "rules" for 5e are actually guidelines, the DM and include/exclude whatever they want. They could make an item like a ring, that could allow druids to Wildshape into, lets say an Owlbear for example.
Druids exist to exterminate Monstrosities from Nature and an Owlbear is a Monstrosity. The idea is a slap in the face of real D&D players no matter how you try to put it, poser. You'll never know more than someone that actually plays.
@@topogigio7031 Calm down. Who knows what level they are? Could very well be shapechange technically if you REALLY wanna be strict about it. Also a tiefling might have a very different view of what a "monstrosity" is anyways. The creators of 5e decided to put owlbears in that type. In previous editions they were beasts or magical beasts. It's entertainment and to think it could be a "slap in the face" to anyone is truly hilarious.
Came here to say exactly this. I haven't played since 3 with the majority of time played in 2e, I would hope dual and multi-class was still a thing. Like you said, everything should just be guidelines and the DM is the final arbiter of what is allowed to happen, the focus should always be entertainment for your party in the end. Just like making a movie about D&D should be about enjoying the experience, not nit-picking minutia in the "rules". Don't let that other reply bother you, characters always have their own motivations and tendencies which means there is no cookie-cutter for all types.
@@topogigio7031 That assumes 5th edition rules are in effect, under 3rd and 4th an owlbear is a magical beast, also a druid can cast Polymorph so wildshape isn't even a requirement. Another point, not all druidic orders in the Forgotten Realms fit the stereotype for example blight druids are devoted servants of nature corrupted. But then you'll never know more than someone that actually plays, and has played , DMed and RPGA Judged since 2nd edition.
Just like the pirate code
It's just a set of guidelines
If You See This I hope you have a good day
You too!
@@garyking3389 thanks
And when you read this I hope you get crabs...
You too, Thank you.
You too!
A thick dangerous pug! How can you not love Whitney?!!
7:01 Yeah, thank you for pointing THAT out! I really hope they got some protection against acid. Although I suspect they're gonna use this for an extended gag where the party's clothes start slowly disintegrating instead of, you know, their skin, flesh and bones.
I love this, can't wait for this movie! Hope we see some pretty cool wizard catnips.
Catnips? [in joke?]
Hehehe CATNIIIPS!!!!
Ah yes the catnips are very useful. Especially for Tabaxi
Yoo!!! Whitney is an instant fave, I can never see the jokes coming, but they kill me everytime
Currently running Icewind Dale for some online friends, was stoked to see them mention Revel's End, which is actually where my party was, like the session before the trailer came out. Rime of the Frostmaiden is such an interesting campaign, I can only hope we get enough success for this movie to warrant further media adaptations. Full Campaigns as TV Series would be incredible.
Nice!!! Our campaign is doing Icespire Peak rn - it’s pretty fun!
I saw an interview with Chris Perkins that implied that they specifically added Revel's End to Icewind Dale because of the movie.
@@jang7675 Yeah, he stated that Revel's End was created specifically for the movie, and then added to the campaign at the same time.
I don’t know much about Dungeons & Dragons aside from the references made to it in Stranger Things, but this movie does look fairly interesting.
its really cool you should read into it if you have time
Ya- believe it or not- some of is old people were LARPing loong before World of Warcraft was a thought in some younger nerds head! 🤣
Yes! Whitney should do more DnD stuff!!
This has to be the most respect for the source material I’ve seen in a movie since Harry Potter. The Damon Wayans movie was hot garbage because it was a generic fantasy movie with the D&D name slapped onto it. But this looks like it’s actually set in the world of D&D.
Whitney I hope you keep doing all the updates for this movie - don't let Voss take it from you!!!
Uhhh....demi gorgon....uhhh mindflayer. Vecna!!! Yes....nailed it! 🤣🤣
Stranger Things fan I’m guessing?
@@Gemini-Lion just poking fun. I mean of course but I think you meant a Kate Bush fan. 🤣 so many levels....killing it!!!
"A city of blades". Sounds "cutting edge". (These thoughts pop, randomly in my head. Why should I suffer alone?)
I am a big fan of dnd becoming main stream and I've only seen a little bit of gatekeeping which at least to me is a step in the right direction, the more the merrier. Can't wait to see this movie
So excited! Looks like one of my campaigns brought to life
Your table must be invisible, poser.
Surprised this video didnt come sooner, but happy its here!
Once when me and my friends were playing D&D there was a mushroom wine barrel that was a mimic and my friend ripped out its tongue and made it a whip, I also killed a gnome that flipped me off.
How is the cast of this movie not just the Companions of the Hall it's literally going to the locations of all of their past adventures. The dreadring and Szazz Tam are literally an unfinished plot line from the Neverwinter saga.
There better be DnD related jokes like arguing over loot or something
0:30 "D&Details" yes, instant like, love it, great work Whitney
DND IS THE COOLEST THING EVER
Poser.
I think the Pala used Divine Sense when they got the Helm of Destruction, right before they were attacked.
As a bard, as soon as I got a forluchan bandore I became Hella OP.
The mention of a Bag of Holding sends such a warm feeling inside. It was the MVP of my very first campaign which was 3.0 ed.
that dragon statue is a gold dragon, rounder head and wings fit for gliding rather than flying, so we’ll definitely have a character who’s secretly a gold dragon
"I use mine for teriyaki sauce" is the most honest D&D moment of this video lol
You clearly have found your sweet spot with this review. I hope you do Lord of the Rings. Great job.
I think it's highly unlikely that the horn is the Draakhorn for 2 reasons.
1, the Draakhorn is massive. It takes 2 people to carry it and another person to blow it.
2, it was not the red wizards who acquired the Draakhorn during the Tyranny of Dragons storyline, but the Cult of the Dragon. Though some of the red wizards were working with the cult.
Still it's possible that they completely changed the way the Draakhorn works, and its place in the story to fit the movie's plot.
You called it, it wasn't the Draakhorn.
Let’s goooo more Whitney!
I don’t k ow anything about D&D but the movie looks cool I just hope it won’t be super confusing to people who don’t know much
This looks like so much fun!
As someone who played first in 1977 (back when the books were half sized badly illustrated paperbacks), quickly followed by my dive into Middle Earth in 1978, I'm having Major Flashbacks with the release of this and the LOTR:RoP series.
WHOOT!
I don’t even watch this stuff but I’m here to support
Anyone ever seen a movie by the name “waiting” the writer plays the trainee
aka the writers of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
Could the Tiefling Druid be a multiclass character that can polymorph into an owlbear and cast dimension door?
Since both polymorph and dimension door are both 4th level spells, that would require a 7th lvl dip, which is unlikely
@@hufflestuff1925 True... but possible 😁
These are the stars of the movie. They could be 15th level or more.
Imagine an 8th lvl Druid/7th lvl Wizard.
I don't know why people keep trying to justify this with rules. Why can't it just be what it is. Why can't it just be a wild shape that they're just doing for the movie. It's a movie not the actual game. People need to stop stressing and just let it be cool.
The art that you guys used for Szass Tam is actually Tarul Var, just so ya know
I'm just hyped this actually looks like it might be good!
Looks like poser trash
jason wong’s character (swordlock? sorcerer?) might be using the shadow blade + green flame blade combo, which scales pretty nicely for full casters imo
As a DnD'er...I am stoked for this movie! Whitney is a full fledged snack herself ba-boooom.
DnDetails...have my like.
You realize there are other spells that let you transform into monsters right? No one said that had to be wildshape.
They did this some years ago with Justin Whalen and Damon Wayans, it didn't do well in the box office
Whitney ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
the town theyre in is from icewindale, and was specifically made for the movie, fun fact for you!
Since he’s a sorcerer, Simon could be using any number of bolt named spells. Since he uses thunder wave, I’m going to assume that he’s around level 1-3. Sorcerers have access to chaos bolt, magic missle, witch bolt, and if we’re doing third level lightning bolt. My money is personally on Chaeos bolt because it’s awesome.
Per the D&D Beyond stat blocks, Simon is using Chaos Bolt. Based on the proficiency bonus in the stat block, they are 5th to 8th level, but based on their HD, they are 16th-18th level. So tweaked for plot purposes and not exactly RAW.
I'm calling Drizzt in a sequel/offshoot movie, what teenage dreamboat will be the most famous emo drow of all time?
I'm really excited for all of the underdark stuff, with Gracklstugh and Themberchaud, because I've recently been (trying) to run Out of the Abyss
This video is so good and so rich in Forgotten Realms lore that I'm signing to the channel
WHERE'S OUR SANDMAN VIDEOS???
You rolled a NatCrit before shooting this video :)
I got the impression the horn was the horn of Orcus. More in line with the undead for the dead wizards.
Also the druid has a tail!
I just hope the bard will be even half as funny as Scanlan Shorthalt, the gnome bard of Vox Machina.
If so, he'll be the best character hands down.
I’m like a thick dangerous pug too😂🤣😂🤣
If there isn’t a “falling into the bag of holding” joke I’ll be disappointed or a joke about how deep it is because even dnd fans(I enjoy it but I typically do homebrew) think it’s crazy how big it has to be inside to hold that much stuff
Currently playing the Icewind Dale campaign so super excited to see my campaign setting come to life!
Yeah that is definitely the Horn of Orcus, since the Red Wizards are into necromancy.
So glad their covering this! I was starting to think they wouldn’t!
Is there seriously a DnD story even though people can create their own stories? That's kinda cool.
I need some more Whitney van lanningham pls, too funny.
U missed to mention that Green Flame nods to Acquisitions Incorporated.
holy Juan
Bard
The Aquaman of Dungeons & Dragons.
However, with the right actor playing that role they may no longer be a joke 😜
You see the original cast from the 1980s cartoon at the end Arena
They are also in the beginning of the Maze as one of the other two parties that starts the Maze.
7:23 this actually looks like Neverwinter not the arena
well in the cage they didnt enter was people made to look like the ones in the old School D&D cartoon from hasbro
Never has a video game movie pumped me up to watch it. Can't wait!!!
pretty sure 1:04 is a white statue of a copper dragon, not a white dragon statue lol
Fun Trailer and hope it's like a old school 90s Action Flick.
lmao nope.
@@topogigio7031 Pine is great and looks like The Mummy (1999) style of action flick.
I didn't know sweets wrote movies
Near never winter is icespire peak which is home to a juvenile white dragon
Covering all this fantasy content, can you guys do these for Wheel of Time on Amazon prime?
It would be great if they do the whole season for season 2 instead of just stopping halfway through.
The Druid isn't a Tiefling, she's a Satyr
I loved the one from 2000! Yeah it was super Rated B, but it was everything! So was Warcraft. I hope this is even better. If it's as good, I'll be REALLY happy!
I might even watch Warcraft today because of this YT vid
I can't wait to see this movie.
Poser.
Any rule inaccuracies I'm just going to justify with it being a house rule campaign 😂
I've wanted to play dnd since I was a kid but I've always been too nervous 😭
I have a group of friends who play and they've invited me so many times but aghhhh anxiety
THIS TRAILER LOOKS SO COOL THO
And having u explain the lore just a little just makes me wanna play it so much more! IT'S SO NERDY I LOVE IT 😭❤️
It is nice that you have friends that have invited you. If you are too anxious, you might try just going and watching them play a session or two...that might ease you into being willing to actually play. At the core, D&D is simply make-believe.
I can't wait for this!! Thanks and safety to ya all as always!!
You're doing a great job Whitney! Love watching you. Keep it Up.
Thanks for pointing out these details. This trailer is so much more interesting now.
You were awesome and helpful. Great quick context and lore summary for us non or uninformed fans.
Outstanding coverage! Thanks, Whitney!
You're telling me Mitch from Waiting wrote this AND Homecoming! I almost asked why I'm just now hearing this, but it makes sense, Mitch is always so awkwardly silent how could I have?
You missed the party that was in the cage in the maze. Reference to the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the 80s.
I want to go play D&D now
Poser.
Thats not a white dragon statue, its a copper dragon statue!
Watching from Bahamas 🇧🇸
Was hoping you guys would cover this movie
Great work! I missed somethings and didn't know other things. Awesome stuff!
Everyone calls Chris pines character a bard but it seems to be more like an oath breaker paladin, crossed with a bard. I could be wrong but would be cool to see a multi class in the movie
Mainly, because of the four main party members, plus the DM PC Paladin, all but Holga the Barbarian are casters. The writers didn't want everything to be solved with magic, so everyone but Simon pretty much doesn't explicitly use magic.
Also some are saying that Edgin is a Mastermind Rogue with a proficiency in performance and Lute, posing as a Bard. ;)
It seems like it's going to be kind of ridiculous and campy but in a fun self aware way that relates the spirit of DnD.
Hopefully it will actually be that.
Druids can become owl bears I believe. It’s just a extra process you have to go through
I just thought you were able to turn into a monstrosity as well as long as you negated half the cost. I read that somewhere but I could have mistook a homebrew rule for a by the book one
I bet those red wizzies have met Cthulu.
