You can tell what they are by their class icons. Chris Pine is a Bard, Rodrigez is a Barbarian, Rege-Jean Page is a Paladin, Justice Smith's character is a Sorcerer and Sopha Lillies' character is a Druid. Hugh Grant's character is a Rogue. To all watching the DnD trailer, I have to bring you guys the attention to what the actors and producers are saying on interviews in this comic con and I strongly recommend everyone to watch then.
In almost all of them, the love and respect for the source material and the fans is palpable.
Michele Rodrigues had an excellent on where she says " a lot of companies get those IPs only to get money, without caring for the IP"
And the producers said " It's for everyone but it's mostly for the fans, they are the ones keeping DnD alive longer than I am living. Bring the fans and the rest will come"
I am very happy with this and will give all the chances to this film.

@@axelmartinez8538 Now you sound like my friend. I appreciate good RP but they should have combined Thaumaturgy and Prestidigitation. I can "RP" that my voice is booming and it does the same thing as Thaumaturgy. There is nothing useful outside of RP that you do with that spell. (maybe the door or window thing but that would be such a specific situation.) It's all subjective to the DM if the booming voice or ooky spooky effects did anything to anybody. The ability to turn campfires and torches on and off alone with Prestidigitation is worth that spell. They could have combined them and if they wanted different effects for different types of spellcasters they could have done: "If you're a cleric you can do these additional effects." or something like that.
My friend got advantage one time by using Thaumaturgy and that has made him preach about how it's a good spell. I've never done anything useful except for what amounts to flavor text. Prestidigitation, I keep my character clean after every encounter. We don't need to roll to start a fire or put one out in dire circumstances. I can brag about how my food tastes better than everyone elses. And I can hand my fellow adventurers little middle finger up trinket hands if they do something that annoys me.

@@sillyking1991 I get it, they aren't amazing spells, they're cantrips. But let's not play around. 99% of the population in a D&D universe would choose Prestidigitation over Thaumaturgy. Hot and cold food. Flavored. Clean clothes. And you don't have to spend twenty minutes trying to start a fire? Presti has got it all the way.
I've never had the DM ask me anything that Thaum would work on. Never. Never been asked, "How do you talk loud enough?" or "The monsters would listen but your eyes aren't glowing."
I have been asked BOTH "How do you start the fire?" and "How do you put the fire out?" Most times the starting of fires is just a handwave thing, campfire is started because the PCs are camping for the night. But that time it wasn't, there was a dire circumstance and it wasn't just gonna be a handwave thing. The other time was a group of baddies were after us and I put out the fire, much to the DMs chagrin.
I've also been told, "You're covered in blood you can't just walk past the guards!" And I laugh and say, "What blood?" then sing "Prestidigitation!"
      Presti is besty.

For me, it's not an owlbear, mimic, or black dragon that get my attention in this trailer. It's seeing clear visual ques like clearly city of neverwinter, The Rebel's End Prision from Icewind Dale, The symbol of Lathander on bannars, Chris Pine wearing a Harper's pin, Red Mages of Thay - including one that is likely Szas Tam the lich himself, an underdark city that might be Menzoberranzan (Drizzt sequel?) or Gracklstugh, and good old chunky boi Themberchaud.
It may not be *historically* accurate (not like DnD ever is) but the important details for a DnD movie is that it's showing in this bit of footage to be extremely accurate to the DnD books we've had for years.

@@sillyking1991 Depends on which edition the Cube is from. Early edition Cubes only did like 2d8 dmg per round. 5E Cubes do like 6d6 dmg per round once a creature is inside them.
The 5e displacer beast is a bit more situational. If it hits with 2 claw attacks on a target then it can rake with it's back 4 legs for a total of 6 claw attacks doing a total of 6d4+24 dmg. Or it can go with 2 tentacle atks at 1d4+4 each and/or a bite atk at 1d8+4 dmg. The main threat of a displacer beast is that it's usually not where you think it is because it displaces it's image to a different nearby spot. So atks against it are made at a disadvantage. Comparing between different editions is a chore but older editions displacer beasts are a bit easier to deal with because they only apply a -2 to hit to players. Starting in 3e is when they started becoming more like the 5e version though with the displacement illusion aspect.
So....it depends on which edition. 5e the Cube is far more dangerous and damaging plus is WAY harder to hurt than the displacer beast. If they're older editions then the cube would be the better choice to deal with.

When you think about it, the atypical D&D setting is kinda like a weird hodgepodge of different eras thrown into an anachronistic stew.
    You got:
    - Wild West with frontier towns and taverns as well as warring tribal groups.
    - all the time periods of medieval Europe.
    - the innovativeness of the renaissance.
    - swashbuckling rogues and pirates from 17th and 18th centuries.
    - Viking raiders of 10th and 12th centuries.
    - and we can’t forget Conan’s Undreamed of Age.

But how it intersects is important you have magic barriers events that almost end the world all the time based on great evils and good fighting endless battles small to large then you have some places where certain things would be useless like a non-magic wild west won't do well against magic but if you have it be mixed just maybe it could work but its delicate I prefer stories that blend it all or even if at disadvantage they still can work for example a distracted wizard could still get a bullet and die without enough time to block if fighting multiple opponents and if some abilities are used in tandem a regular gunslinger could work fine. Futuristic can work by create balances so losing ammo for guns and need to make more bullets if needing to recharge energy needing spells that could power such weapons or natural elements and locations that could in some way make playability the key is IMAGINATION but they seem to want to rule lawyer everything, balance everything on paper or give massive drawbacks to attacks for example monks in 5e.

@@stagthechainsawbeserker3926 I’m sorry, I’m not sure exactly what you’re trying to say. I don’t know if you’re making an argument, adding to what I said, or I don’t really know.
To help, what I was attempting to point out was the average D&D setting, baring magic for now, is in a time period that never really existed. It is rather an amalgamation of different historical periods, in particular, elements of those time periods we are most familiar. For example, a little village in D&D will look more like a Wild West frontier town with a general store and specialty shops than a medieval peasant village. Another would be armor and weapons, the various types of armor (chain mail, brigandine, full plate) or swords (arming sword, long sword, epee, falchion, claymore, cutlass) are separated by decades if not centuries. What is interesting is despite all these little anachronisms, we’re willing to accept them as normal parts of our run of the mill make believe worlds to have in. And that’s ok.
As for guns, balancing is almost a non-issue. From match lock to civil war era rifles, Simply require line of sight firing with penalties to accuracy if target is behind an obstruction, longer reload time, a beefed up ranged damage with options to use as a wooden club or a short spear (if bayonet is attached) for melee damage. Revolvers could take, say, a full action to reload once all ammunition is spent (a PC might get off 2 or 3 rounds per turn depending on make and model like double action revolvers. single action revolvers would be one shot per turn since you have to manually cock the hammer after every shot). Good examples of gun rules to take inspiration from are Cyberpunk Red or even 2020 and Call of Cthulhu.

And you had to wait a full day to get the plusses back. So it was a way to get a ranged attack out of your sword. He's a paladin witch in current d&d (5e Vr) paladins can choose subclasses which enter them into a "Oath/pact"" with a deity/god, after witch geves them access (depending on their pact) to a "pact weapon" associated with that god/deity in some way. most of which are summoned to their hands through a special word/phrase/thought'(s). meaning that paladin can yeat that sword part of his pact weapon away from him and magically summon it back to hand with the power granted them through that "Oath".

Effects looked good, monsters looked lore-accurate (Original D&D for me), studded leather is a D&D trope by now, and Chris Pine is always a win. The Lute humor worked for me, too. That leaves the flying sword, which would ordinarily be a total Nope for me, but it could be a magical flying weapon that goes to slice up an enemy spell-caster and then returns to you, while leaving you with at least something to stab people with in the meanwhile. Especially given how weird some magic items have gotten in later editions, I'll allow it, as long as they don't overuse it. The Huge Axe aesthetic is saying that it is going for the D&D realism as well, not historical medieval. So in summary, looks like it might be entertaining enough, but I am not expecting it to be a masterpiece. As long as I get a few chuckles out of it and enjoy watching the characters go through their adventure, that is good enough.

I agree, In my own sessions as a master, I once created an NPC that was a mage who had a magical staff that changed it's properties based on which magical crystal was put into it.
One of the crystals transformed it into a dagger, that when hurled in the air would multiply itself several times and cover a 25 ft area under a rain of steel, said ability could only be used twice a day, the uses however were tied to the crystal, not the staff. Another crystal would create a blade of energy around the body of the staff, effectively transforming it into a magic, vorpal greatsword. This crystal was the most busted as it could be freely used whenever he wanted. And then he had one crystal that would open a portal to his base once a day, which he would use whenever he completed his mission or wanted to retreat from a battle. There's a lot that can be done with magical weapons.

DM discretion is the #1 rule of all d&d, the DM is the one who read, analyzes, and interprets the rules so their players can have fun playing together and if a player want to do something the rules don't allow for but that isn't game breaking, it is fine to allow it. if it becomes a problem in the futur it is easy enough to talk to the play about it and not allow it later.

About the flying sword I'm gonna literally copy and paste.
    "Dancing Longsword"
"You can use a bonus action to toss this magic sword into the air and speak the command word. When you do so, the sword begins to hover, flies up to 30 feet, and attacks one creature of your choice within 5 feet of it. The sword uses your attack roll and ability score modifier to damage rolls.
While the sword hovers, you can use a bonus action to cause it to fly up to 30 feet to another spot within 30 feet of you. As part of the same bonus action, you can cause the sword to attack one creature within 5 feet of it.
After the hovering sword attacks for the fourth time, it flies up to 30 feet and tries to return to your hand. If you have no hand free, it falls to the ground at your feet. If the sword has no unobstructed path to you, it moves as close to you as it can and then falls to the ground. It also ceases to hover if you grasp it or move more than 30 feet away from it."

When it comes to the introduction of magic into the world a lot opens up when you really come to think of it. The hot air balloon is not reality breaking when you think about it because people can just cast magic fire in their hands and hold it or have a container to hold their magic flame where they pour magic into it to make it bigger or smaller.
The flying knife of course is a nope if it is spring loaded and that is it. But If the blade itself is an enchanted weapon like the flying sword enemy in dnd then that would actually be pretty useful. Because it acts not only like a projectile but as another enemy itself. Shoot this thing off and not only will it fly towards an enemy but it will act like a very lethal hornet that will carve you up. So for a rogue that is actually not a bad idea when magic is involved.
The slingshot on the arm is more unforgivable not because it is a bad idea. But because its position makes it difficult to aim. It would have been better if it was mounted on the wrist like ren from star wars rebels. Because then you can aim better and have more room for drawing the sling back.
I dont have a big problem with the armor so much. It is fantasy, not historical so the armor presentation is one of the biggest separation factors, could it be more practical, yes but some of it needs to be over the top.
Just my opinion. I can be wrong.

Having it shoot the blade off but leaving behind the little half-ass dagger is stupid as hell. And if you pay attention, the blade of the sword and the dagger don't even maintain the same line as the sword blade is leaving. They're off by several degrees which should screw up the path of the blade. That's more about getting your effects right than anything, but it shows that they're not paying much attention.

Forgotten Realms were more medieval inspired back in 2e, but in the current Sword Coast timeline it's largely early modern Europe inspired. There is well over a century that has lapsed in the lore. Technology is advanced beyond the clothing and architecture though, particularly because the deity Gond gave various technologies to the gnomes and the Gond clergy. So you do have certain people who have renaissance to regency era firearms, as well as steam engines etc. On top of all that it takes place in a world as old as our own, and it mainly resembles a more ancient time only because magic has replaced the need for many of our modern conveniences, but a 20th or 21st century inspired garment wouldn't be out of place there.
