Hi Dan, I would like to make a suggestion. It would be great if you could also have a short segment for movies that have terminated their run with their final total and their budget. Thanks a lot in advance!!
It’s been a rough week personally. Seeing DnD in theaters twice cheered me up. It may not be financially appreciated but if anyone working on the film is here (and there are hundreds of people) THANK YOU!! Even if you were just craft services thanks.
25:46 DAN!! I understand the hard *nope* on MALUM, but if you had watched you would have seen me!!! 😉 Happy we made it into the Top 5. If you change your mind, it’s not so scary! Okay, well…maybe a little. Miss you, xx Clarke
I was actually hoping we would get it in my market, sadly no (mid-sized market). I like to give indie horror films a shot. Was hoping to see that and Enys Men.
For what it's worth, the poster did get my attention. After a quick search the cast made it even more interesting. Definitely gonna keep an eye out for it.
@@BonJoviBeatlesLedZep Struck me as a bit surrealist. In some ways it was also reminding me of 'the Shout'. Maybe just the fact it looks like a weird British horror film from the 70's.
I really loved the dungeons and dragon movie and I’ve been encouraging others to see it! I was impressed with the practical effects and comedy. I’m going to be going again with some friends!
I think dnd was a well crafted movie but there’s something wrong with the structure somehow. I think it’s cuz those stole that invisibility necklace without showing a scene where the shop owner is an arse. They also cut down the heist portion. Honor amongst thieves had very little heist dna.
An anecdote about the D&D movie and John Wick 4: at my local theaters, both movies have only had two or three screenings per day even on their opening weekend. I wonder if this is an indicator that the theater owners were not very confident that the movies would sell tickets, or the studios lack the leverage of Disney to demand screenings, or maybe the theaters are just staffed? Regardless of the reason, the lack of showtimes made it very difficult for me to schedule time to see them. In fact, I still haven't seen either yet partly because of this (I'm seeing D&D tonight though, hopefully John Wick soon).
The thing I will say about Paramount paying themselves to stream their movies on Paramount+ is that it’s more or less a requirement they need to do in order to to calculate how much they need to pay in terms of residuals and any profit participation deals. They just value it at the market rate (how much they would have gotten had they licensed the film to someone else) because they can’t just value it at $0. Also, that $80 million isn’t coming just from Paramount+, it’s also coming from MGM+ (formerly Epix) because they have an output deal with Paramount that stems from Paramount’s former ownership stake in the network (which was modified so that Paramount could put their films on Paramount+ as well).
Saw D&D this weekend. Finally, my first film of the year that I really enjoyed. I plan on seeing it again next weekend. I hope it has legs, it's going to need it. Going to need to keep track of that 2nd. weekend drop.
Dan Murrell is generally very conscientious of pronunciation. It is much appreciated! The Korean pronunciation of Paik as "Pike" is a bit irregular, commonly it is pronounced "Pack," but I think this one is pronounced "Peck." A documentary of Nam June Paik even if it Oscar Worthy probably wont be mentioned very often and Dan can be easily excused from speaking Korean fluently. Always enjoy your content, thank you Dan Murrell!,
This movie shocked me. I've been telling people they have to go see it. It was a blast. I had no idea the comedy was going to be there and continuously land everytime.
14:44 This is why movies should be budgeted appropriately. I had no expectations from the movie, but went to watch it on Dan's recommendation and really enjoyed it! It did so many things right, avoided so many blockbuster traps. Sad it probably won't be profitable.
Can we please see a Mario release chart about it's performance in JAPAN specifically? I'd be interested to know if that number is big or small respectively
It isn’t a “four quadrant” movie, so I don’t think its staying power will be able to keep up with the more mainstream blockbusters. It’s doing very well though and I’d like to see it become the franchise best overall.
I went to watch D&D with my D&D party. I've been playing D&D for a year, my DM has been playing for 15 years, and we also had some people who have never played before. We all thoroughly enjoyed. It has Easter eggs, it was fun, chaotic... I am glad you enjoyed it as well!!!
Reminds me of Lethal Weapon. the first movie was so-so and lost money, but the second one was a huge hit. D&D is going to explode on streaming and Paramount will definitely make a sequel.
Yeah, for comparison, the first potc had an opening of 46 mil, and then it grew with the help of auxiliary markets, making the second installment a massive box office success. One can only hope the same can happen here.
I'd say even with it's dropoff, The fact that "John Wick: Chapter 4" is well into the profitable margins of it's run now is more than enough, in spite of it's runtime and being R-Rated.
As for any R rated movie, it doesn’t mean that much in the international market, different markets have very different ratings system and guide. To me, Paramound knew it was gonna loose money on the box Office in this movie. But that lost it is an investment on the launch of a franchise. The movie is really good, so, chances are people are going to find out about in stream and rental and enhanced the brand. So, a second movie will have more chance of making a profit in theaters, because it will take to the theaters the people who find out about the movie at home will go to see the sequel. It is what happen to John Wick. Also, because is a dnd movie, the revenue from merchandise has a lot more potential than most movies. I dont think they did a smart budget, they were seeing beyond the imediate profit. If they havend invest that much money, good chances the movie would end up a lot worst and therefore actually risk a franchise. is the same bet that sony did with into the spiderverse. A movie that probably just scrap by a profit in theaters, but that it was so well made and well receive that it launch a franchise even so. In fact, from a franchaise building perspective. I think that is better like it was, than if the movie had made 100 mi on the opening weekend but had gotten a C+ cinema score and a 30% on rotten tomatoes.
For what it's worth, my entire D&D group is still planning on seeing the D&D movie. The trouble has been scheduling a viewing time that works for everyone.
For the John Wick drop, I think we need to remember that all the premium theaters were taken away by DnD. Dolby mad IMAX accounted for a ton of the big numbers early on.
The movie Air is really good, especially if you lived through that time period as I did. The opening montage is fantastic and puts you right back to the time.
I've been watching your content for years now and I had no idea that you were from Arkansas (or at least reside within Arkansas)! I'm not from Arkansas but I have lived here for almost 25 years so it's always cool to see representation. The craziest thing to me is that I've actually lived here long enough to remember when we had some really bad tornadoes tear up Markham st in Little Rock and this was very reminiscent of that. We unfortunately get bad weather like this every year but normally we see it hit in slightly more rural areas instead of the capital of the entire state that has the densest population. What's kind of crazy for me to consider in hindsight is that if I was still working at my previous job that I did before the pandemic I would've been smack dab in the middle of where the storms hit instead of now where I was way out in Prim doing deliveries and only realized how severe things were many hours later once I got off work and turned on the radio in my car on my way home.
Dan, if you can believe it, I just referenced your channel and this episode in my doctoral program discussion post for this week. I am taking Applied Statistics and we were to use a real world example on how statistics can be misrepresented or misinterpreted and their impacts. Thought your D&D breakdown was a good example to share from my passion for movies and enjoyment of watching Charts with Dan on a weekly basis :) Thanks for all that you do!
I suspect Paramount is so hungry for a hit franchise (esp as M:I exits stage right) they might see DD:HAT as a “loss leader” even if it doesn’t turn profit. A growing fanbase on streaming might tell the tale.
It seems like big second weekend drops are becoming the norm anymore. I wonder if it's becoming much more common for people to either see a movie opening weekend or waiting for it to come to streaming, but fewer people are either waiting for the second or third weekend to go to the theater or are going back multiple times. I really liked John Wick 4, but doubt I'll see it in the theaters again because it's so long and there are other movies I want to see. Same with D&D. I really liked it but probably won't go back. And I'm not really that interested in Scream 6 so I haven't seen it yet, but figured just to be completest I'll see it eventually so I should just see it in the theater, but just haven't found the time or motivation so it might wait until streaming. But it seems like even well received movies are having steeper than usual second weekend drops. But maybe that's just the impression I'm getting because of some of the high profile drops recently.
I'm with you. I think giant drops from week one to week two for the vast majority of movies are going to be the norm. Audiences just have so many options now from the comfort of their own home too. A movie can still get people into the theater once. That said, a movie that's 'only' good; but not amazing, will have a shorter theatrical shelf life before coming out on streaming.
love your videos Dan! I'm nowhere near an expert when it comes to these things and I really love your weekly analysis as a casual movie enjoyer. I'd like to add that, regarding the DnD movie, there is some probably unquantifiable amount of sales from getting people into the game, that hasbro is probably banking on too. Even though I like seeing the numbers as a curiosity, what I'd hope is more folks will see the movie (in theaters or later on streaming) and get into the hobby themselves, not to make money for a company, but because I think TTRPGs are cool ^^
I'm really looking forward to Suzume. I was excited that they showed the trailer before D&D this weekend. I started watching anime movies in the last few years, but this will be the first anime movie I see in theaters. I just missed seeing Belle in theaters (which would have been awesome), but I definitely don't want to miss Suzume.
Dan, I just thought of ANOTHER set of charts to add to the show. You have been tracking Movies of the Seasons, and it’s great. I would love to see Seasonal Comparisons. How did Spring 2023 compare to other Years’ Spring Seasons, or the other seasons in the last year. Or the Box office of a Spring movie vs the Spring Average or other popular spring releases.
@11:00 - I think this is very much above board if that much was actually transferred internally. People who are in charge of different divisions of a company need to be able to account for their success or failure in terms of costs or income. The streaming side has income and the movies it puts on there have a cost. The films have a cost and would license them out to other sources if the parent company hadn't kept it in house. Directors, actors, etc certainly are going to call all sorts of foul if the company said "sorry, there is no streaming licensing revenue to be able to pay you because we put it on our own streaming service instead of licensing it". And the streaming side needs to be able to show a real cost of the things it is airing vs its income so they can determine if the service is priced right and worth it.
Re table game adaptations - what about Clue? I would think that inflation-adjusted that movie would have done pretty well. It was certainly very watchable.
Hey Dan, Great episode as always. Glad you and your family are safe. Once Deadline finishes theit most profitabile movies countdown do you have any plans to do a video on it and show how box office isnt the whole picture for movie studios?
That's too bad about Dungeons and Dragons. If any studio executive were to look at that March chart, "Sequels. That's where the money should go," is what they would conclude. And that's not their fault. That's our fault.
Carbon health failed in my local market in VA. They signed three leases only opened one location for less than a year and then closed with out ever opening the other two locations. I bet something is up Dan and they aren't telling you
In Malaysia... TMNT secret of the ooze was banned because of the funny reason of it giving a bad image to our local turtle. However, months later the Malaysia censorship board allow it to be show in Malaysia cinema but the VHS home video of the movie already release. My dad bought the movie... and I don't know how many times I repeat viewing the movie... I love the movie.
Streaming charts is probably my favorite part of the show. Can’t wait til it gets its own time to shine! Also I had to rewatch it twice. The Mandolorian not cracking top ten over those two weeks is a MASSIVE FAILURE for Disney. I’m guessing it may have only debuted during one of the weeks, but even if that’s the case, it could have gotten a bump from people catching up. An enormously budgeted streaming exclusive getting beat out by things like Bluey, South Park, and Greys Anatomy is terrible news for Disney. (For the record, this is far from an attempt to troll Disney. I live Disney and my profile pic is in Galaxy Edge in Walt Disney World.)
Yes, do see Dungeons & Dragons movie on the big screen. Very much recommended. Hope, it crosses 300 m worldwide, even if its gross income. Loved the movie. Cool video.
The one thing going for D&D is that there are stll some decent sized markets where it will be released later - I see France, Brazil, Turkey, Poland, so the international legs might be stronger than a full day-and-date release.
Hi Dan. Love your show. Something that I've been hearing a lot when it comes to movies doing well are the availability premium screens. A possible reason that John Wick 4 may have dropped as big as it did, could be that it lost most its premium screens to Dungeons and Dragons.
I saw Dances With Wolves in the theater in the summer of 91, months after opening. That doesn’t happen anymore unless the movie is Everything Everywhere.
How does it work with the dungeons and dragons movie having a bunch of early screenings for general audiences. I saw it almost a week before the official premier, where is that box office counted?
I love that opening tune. It almost triggers a Pavlovian response, like I want to crack some glow sticks. However, as time goes by, the innate response is one of comfort, knowing I'm about to get some cogent analysis 😅
When you look at the Nielsen Charts.. Is this the 4th time we see 2 Guns (2013) on this chart? I wonder who are the people who watch this movie over and over again? Probably the same people who watch The Condemned (2007) from a few weeks back or the Jason Statham movies War (2007), Homefront (2013) or Parker (2013), all of them appeared on the chart.
My grandmother walked from Little Rock to Chicago back during segregation it’s a beautiful place which she loved and wanted to return to one day happy to help!
On one hand I'm really happy the D&D movie is doing so good because I absolutely adore the game and how much it's done for me in my life. On the other hand after the whole WOTC OGL drama our whole group moved to pathfinder and I was reluctant to pay money to WOTC to watch it. Glad I did because the film was awesome
One side note to the "No movies outside of Avatar are doing well in China" is Suzume, whilst it's not a US film it's been doing staggeringly well in China so far making over $80 million there in 2 weeks.
I wonder if "The Big Drop Off" in Week 2+ is going to become 'the new norm" in this post-Pandemic/Soon-to-Streaming world. Unless you specifically "NEED TO SEE IT ON THE BIG SCREEN" the drive to "see it again" and/or "word of mouth" needs to overcome a lot more because by "Week 2" you're already 7+ days into a "45 Day Window" till it shows up on streaming etc. (or ~1/6th or 15.5%) so why not just wait a month and watch it at home for free or cheap?
John Wick 4 also has a very long run time with its most celebrate and interesting action sequences (Paris) not starting until over 90 minutes in. The earlier ones are great but the movie does take a very long time to get going and reach the innovative action of the Warrior homage which makes it worth the ticket price. Hears hoping D&D has legs. With its early screenings, how do you think that impacted opening weekend? Are those included?
10:30; That 'Smile' television/streaming income from another division of Paramount is shady as hell, but good to see Deadline bringing back the yearly Most Valuable Blockbusters recap!
I think the dnd movie has legs! I saw it monday and still know a few people that are planning out doing theater rentals so they can see it with their dnd groups. I'm sure it will be big on streaming with dnd groups and fans!
15:40 Hey Dan, do you think you could go into marketing costs? I’m not disputing that number but, I’m really curious what 100 mil gets you ad wise given this box office opening
Can you please contact universal and ask them how violent night is in 24 theaters? It went up to 25 this weekend. Cant find any place it’s playing. Seems impossible people are doing private screenings of it
hey Dan, if numbers are available and it won't eat up an unreasonable amount of time; could you include how many weeks it took for previous movies to make their money? like John Wick 3, how long was it in cinemas and how long did it take to get those numbers compared to the 4th one.
Reminder that Walmart plus members can get free access to paramount plus so some of that revenue sharing for smile may be coming from those Walmart memberships and revenues. I’m sure paramount isn’t providing that to Walmart for free
If I’m hearing right, Hasbro paid for half of Honor Among Thieves’ budget. If that’s the case, Paramount might walk away from this seeing it as a modest success. Hasbro seems more interested in merchandising the movie, and using it as a giant ad for DnD as an IP. So there’s ways for it to be considered a success. Unless Mario just completely eviscerates it this weekend.
I have friends who grew up in the "Satanic Panic," and they are STILL wary of DnD even now. I've been trying to get them to give it a chance, but so far I have not been successful. I think this movie could improve their view of DnD, and I'm hoping to take them to see it, but we'll see if they back out last minute. 😅
Today was an interesting movie day as I found myself with some free time in the day and decided on something of a whim to go to the movies. I had two movies in mind to see between seeing John Wick Chapter 4 again or checking out Dungeons and Dragons which I heard was good. The deciding factor for me was completely down to showtimes with D&D simply having the next upcoming showtime that aligned with my schedule. I'm still a little sad that I didn't get to see John Wick again as I've been thinking about it a lot since I saw it and really do want to see it again but I had a fantastic time with D&D and was thoroughly entertained so I'm not mad about the decision but it just means that I really want to find time again maybe next week to go the theater again. However, I do totally feel that John Wick and this new D&D movie were not only fighting for a similar audience but really for actual theaters as the number of showings of John Wick in my local theater was down significantly from last week to the point that I would have need to wait an additional hour past the start of D&D if I wanted to see John Wick again. D&D also took over most of the premium theater showings that John Wick had last week in my theater which meant that I'd need to wait even LONGER if I wanted to experience John Wick again the same way I saw it last week as there were way fewer of those showings as well.
They gave a nod to 1980's Dnd animated show by having the characters in the escape maze scene . Sorry about your Moms neighborhood getting damaged by the storm.

I second this, with avatar and puss in boots on their backend as well.
Eh... I think that's a bit much. It's kinda hard to say exactly when movies end their run between the smaller screens and international releases.
Good call! That'd be really interesting.
Good idea actually
That's not a chart. That's just a stat. Not the concept of the show.

I know folks who are waiting to see the D&D movie with their gaming group this week. I hope it does well!
I saw this movie the other day in an empty theater all to myself and I loved it. What a delight.
love your videos Dan!
I look forward to this every week, thank you Dan for keeping up the great work, have an awesome week.
I think the packed spring/summer release schedule will see several films underperform due to screen availability and audience retention.
When I saw the length, I thought, "I'll bet he didn't separate the streaming charts from this episode."
Will donate what I can. Thanks Dan.
Re table game adaptations - what about Clue? I would think that inflation-adjusted that movie would have done pretty well. It was certainly very watchable.
Its opening was out of the top five, both regularly and adjusted for inflation
Legs defined, and written down in text for the first time. Way to innovate, Dan!
22:04 it’s spring break here and our biggest theatre was full at 1130 today but we have lounger seats so biggest doesn’t mean what it used to
Hey Dan, Great episode as always. Glad you and your family are safe. Once Deadline finishes theit most profitabile movies countdown do you have any plans to do a video on it and show how box office isnt the whole picture for movie studios?
Would Jumanji be considered a tabletop game adaptation and included in that chart? Or is it more a table top adaptation of a movie?
The game followed the movie
That's too bad about Dungeons and Dragons. If any studio executive were to look at that March chart, "Sequels. That's where the money should go," is what they would conclude.
And that's not their fault. That's our fault.
Thanks for mentioning the Hollywood Theater the other week. Movie Madness would probably be worth a visit to you if you're ever in town.
Cool video.
Schmigadoon was a great show - highly recommend. Excited for season 2! (Didn’t even know they were making a second one 😅)
The one thing going for D&D is that there are stll some decent sized markets where it will be released later - I see France, Brazil, Turkey, Poland, so the international legs might be stronger than a full day-and-date release.
I want to see John Wick again, it’s just getting that three free hours again! So that’s definitely a factor
That number 4 in 91, wtf. I’ve seen every other movie multiple times crazy 32:52
Hi Dan. Love your show. Something that I've been hearing a lot when it comes to movies doing well are the availability premium screens. A possible reason that John Wick 4 may have dropped as big as it did, could be that it lost most its premium screens to Dungeons and Dragons.
If you want to see a new D&D film then it sounds like you need to see this one at least twice. Better than buying a new supplement.
A 150m budget for a DnD movie is absolutely insane.
I can just imagine the collective head scratching when Dan mentioned a Grease prequal involving the Pink Ladies.
The sass when talking about Cocomelon. Love it!
In the opening weekend total
I really liked D&D and I didn’t know anything about it other than it was fantasy.
Chris Pine and the whole cast were really good.
My grandmother walked from Little Rock to Chicago back during segregation it’s a beautiful place which she loved and wanted to return to one day
happy to help!
John Wick Chapter 4 doesn't open here in Japan until September... *sigh*
"No. No, nope," My attitude as well. 😆
Bright spot: AT LEAST IT DIDN’T SHAZAM ITSELF.
Dumb question - when someone orders their movie ticket weeks in advance as I did with Suzume does it still get counted in these numbers?
I also really enjoyed the Dnd movie. I might drag some of my dnd buddies along to come see it with me (again)
Would we be able to get an update on the 365 day chart? I know it's not necessary to have it every week, but it's been a while since we've seen it.
Holiday thrusday and friday this week for various countries, so big oportunity for Mario.
Scream 6 is up to 153.3 million. Boxofficemojo is slow. So it took in like 11 million total worldwide this last weekend. Just saying. :)
I go by the numbers that are available to me when the show is being made, and I use multiple sources
@@DanMurrellMovies I know you do Dan, I have been following you for years.
I PayPal’ed a few bucks to Arkansas food bank. Best wishes to you and your neighbors.
As someone who doesn't like horror but has recently become obsessed with Hannibal the tv show, would love to see you review/watch along Dan
I really hope D&D has legs. There was clear passion and artistry put into in unlike many recent blockbusters
I See You got recommended in a TikTok video, which led it to get trending and have regular Netflix viewers tune in as well.
25:35 that movie is a remake of a 2014 horror movie called Last Shift which was pretty good so i'm kinda interested in checking it out
John Wick 4 also has a very long run time with its most celebrate and interesting action sequences (Paris) not starting until over 90 minutes in.
I'm glad you & your family are safe. 💖
I thought you chose the weekend in BO history because of Tokka - a Koopa look-alike 😜
I was hit by the tornado in Little Rock. Thanks for sharing ways to help.
Sorry to hear - hope you’re getting the help you need!
@@DanMurrellMovies I am, thank you. Thanks for keeping up good work of both giving us movie news and just being a decent human being as you do it.
I'm in Little Rock too. We have more potential tornadoes for tonight. =(
Dan, Schmigadoon! is an absolute blast. I cannot recommend more highly
From what I read about Mario. Mario WILL eviscerate DnD
sorry Dan i didn't hear anything you were saying during that Box Office flash back i was busy looking at the poster for Career Opportunities!
