    My wife and I saw it last week and loved it so much! I've played for years but she's never even held a d20. She wanted to see it again as soon as it fully released. So I would say it's accessible to anyone.

    This was just a fun movie. Saw it early with my D&D crew and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. The theater I was in had technical difficulties leading to an hour long delay and continuous D&D themed heckling:
    The theater rolled a 1 on initiative.
    Who would have thought the movie would show up late to the session.
    There was lots of laughter throughout the movie though.

    OMG... the battle between Simon and Sofina was friggen ground breaking,... the speed of the changes when Dorik has to do her thing early on, is ground breaking. I can easilly see this film winning awards for it's SFX. I get it, that the plot is..." get this thing to do that thing" But I think what made it amazing even with a simple plot is, that Just like a D & D session,.... Plan A needs Plan B and Plan C... because Plan A was set up by the DM as a Hook, for Plan B and Plan C.... failing Plan C leads to Plan D,... because they got a long series of bad rolls etc etc...
    You can actually see the meta of the actual game that became this film... I think that for a D & D movie, based on the tabletop what I found amazing about it, is, that it is easy to see the parts where not only the Players messed up their rolls, but where the DM allowed them to " roleplay" through a bad roll and give them the win for roleplaying.... Simon comes to Mind with a particular thing... If you know you know. if you don't.....go see the movie.

    I really missed these kind of movies nowadays. Superhero fatigue is so real. Surprisingly enough, this was also made by Paramount - same as Top Gun. I appreciate their push for classic blockbusters that offer counter- programming to franchise movies from the other studios.

    I am definitely going to see Honor among thieves! I think that if there is a sequel (following the same group or not) I think this has the potential to give us the next Mummy (1999). It can gives us enough adventure, character arc, fantasy, special effects, and great writing/actors that make it a lightening in a bottle movie that is just fucking fun!

    Went to see this on Wednesday night with my D&D group and it was so fun.
    Regé-Jean Page's character just made me... I really enjoyed him, but I kept sighing and going 'of course... of course that's what you're doing... of course it is.' and shaking my head, because it was such a perfect realisation of that character archetype and I loved it.
    It was just a fun good time in a fantasy setting and there's not enough of that around. Fantasy seems to have tried to gain respect by becoming serious and gritty so often in media. There's definitely a place for that, but I do like seeing shenanigans, but shenanigans with heart.

    I went to see the early screening that was set up for Amazon Prime members, and I loved it. Two things that stood out to me as a longtime D&D player were 1) the whole Speak With Dead sequence and them actually using the 5 question limit of the spell, I was chuckling throughout, and 2) the Displacer Beast OMGWTFBBQ!!1! That's been one of my favorite D&D monsters since I first played the original game as a kid, and I loved how it looked in the movie! I especially loved how they chose to portray the "Displacer" effect, the in-game mechanics of that effect work ok on paper but would be tough to visualize. They chose a version of it that looked really cool on screen and was easy for non D&D players to understand as well.

    Was hugely surprised there was such an advanced screening. Not out until later this week.

    Really glad to see your reaction as it helps solidify my enjoyment of the movie...

    Great review, folks! Such a great fun movie with awesome visuals, great action scenes, witty dialog, some really heart filled scenes! Very creative in the way they used the lore, world and creatures from the game. I hope they decide to do more with this crew. Agree with everything you guys said. It's a great fun evening out for anyone looking to be entertained for a couple hours.

    I really enjoyed the movie, and there was some excellent acting, considering past history with such movies. However, I do feel the movie could’ve been a bit tighter, and I kinda thought the final battle could’ve been so much better had the scriptwriters remembered all the stuff that had already been established. (Trying to avoid spoilers.) There was one plot point in particular that I felt they dropped completely, despite it not being fully resolved. I would totally recommend everyone at least catch this on streaming.

    Let's try plan D and E. This was fun and heartfelt. They took D&D seriously but weren't afraid to make it funny. You're right that the characters felt like everything they did made sense. Nothing felt like it needed to happen "for the plot" so, have Joe say it or Sally do it.

    The directors also wrote Spiderman Homecoming which I liked. I saw it last night with a packed crowd. I audibly heard people laughing throughout this film and some were clapping, hooting and hollering when the credits rolled in which is a theater EXPERIENCE HARDLY EVER GET even for the big comic book and action movies. I have never played D and d ever before and I still enjoyed it and the audience I saw it with ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT and ya it's a huge recommendation for everyone to watch with your entire family. Please guys don't let this flop like Shazam 2 did. This movie really deserves sequels.

I was going to see this regardless of anything. im also glad that wotc has backed off of the OGL thing so I can see this opening weekend. while I dont fully trust wotc or hasbro, I dont feel bad for supporting them for the time being. one DnD also looks good so far.

    So the problem that I'm running into is... at the core, a good D&D movie is just a Sword & Staff fantasy. And when you discount all of the cheeky D&D references, this is a subpar story.
    The next aspect is, I think they were hamstrung by being too late. TLoVM has shown us D&D storytelling brought to the screen and one of the major ways that TLoVM succeeds is in that they stayed away from trademarks and IP. They couldn't name spells, gods, locations, etc... which brings us into a shortcoming for this movie. They spent way too much time "saying the thing". I mean; ferfuxake, we spent like 10 minutes on failed atunement. Less than 5 minutes in and we randomly drop that Jonathon is an Aarocockra... we drop Waters Deep...
    I would have like to have seen a more fleshed out story. The climax of the film feels entirely blah, as that baddie wasn't properly set up... in favor of what we thought was the A-line.
    The one plus side... I realized that my Aarocockra cleric, for how I want to play them, does not need a ring of invisibility... as that spell seemed like such an after thought that was set up in the first 10 minutes.
    If there's going to be a D&D expanded universe... they need to do better.

    • @mangalores-x_x
      @mangalores-x_x Рік тому

      I don't get how people can recommend TLoVM in storytelling. I am a Critical Role fan and watched the campaign but as a cartoon it shows how much of an incoherent clusterfuck D&D storytelling is due to players != their characters and the story being improv on the spot developments. I can see CR fans loving the moments on screen but in terms of characters, story arc and development it matches AHDH 80s network cartoon shows and is just a lot of stuff incoherently thrown against the wall.
      Honor among Thieves is bringing back good, straight forward adventure entertainment. Btw: We had that back in the 80s even in fantasy before LOTR killed it all for serious epic fantasy franchises (which except LOTR whic somehow worked all did not work)
      The astonishing thing about this very simple adventure flick is how you show that you did not get it. "baddie wasn't properly set up" ... yeah. Precisely. Because it doesn't matter.

    I don’t care how good it is. When the showrunners came out and said they intentionally set out to emasculate men I knew I’d never watch it. As if we don’t get enough of that in almost everything coming out today, especially Wheel of Time…hard pass. I’ll go watch John Wick 4 again. And if what they said is not the case…maybe they shouldn’t say dumb nonsense in interviews.

    • @samuelaritan3766
      @samuelaritan3766 Рік тому

      @@senorelroboto2 That’s really good to know, and I’m glad you enjoyed it, but if a director says joking or not in an interview, “I like emasculating leading men, but not in a woke way…” during an era where male protagonists are frequently emasculated or intentionally degraded from what they were in their original works, they better be prepared for fans who’ve been burned previously to be more hesitant and discerning in spending 15-20 bucks a ticket, when in the past it feels like paying money to be punished. It just seems like an unforced error in their part leading up to this release.
