Having owned and worked on Ducati’s for the past 30 years I can tell you that this is one of the most concise Desmo clearance DIY I have ever seen , well explained, well videoed and well thought out , great job young grasshopper 👍😎
We have to appreciate how compact and complex modern motorcycles are, and why maintenance is so expensive, but you show how it can be done by an owner who's willing to take the time, be very careful and methodical, and who's not afraid to take on the task and carry it through to completion. You've made a very helpful video. Great job.
THANK YOU! I have a 2016 MTS 1200E and thanks to you I know I can accomplish my valve checks at 18K. Incredible video and thank you again for all the details and pro tips! We owe you some serious beers.
This make me proud to see the younger guys putting in the effort. No doubt you have the technicality and skills to do the job. Excellent work and documentation! Keep att it, thumbs up and subbed :)
couldn't agree more. I'm trying to get my nephew to turn his own wrenches, His Ducati is a lot more complicated than my Evo but step by step- we should be able to do this. Definite kudos to this 'kid' for making this vid.
Bro i have watched the whole thing twice, this is how beautiful it is. Not because i will do it but simply the way u are nicely explaining and doing everything. Now i understand the whole process of the valves adjustment, It is amazing how precise and skilled you are, i would definitely let u open my whole engine without any stress. Wish u all the BEST for 2022
g`day great video i have a 07 1098s since new and think you have demystified the the complexity of doing the shims and cam belts this is much better than a manual with the little tips you give with the forceps and feeler gauges and with the heads up on the special measuring tools and oil way plugs for the shim keeper reinstall screw ups.. if you own the bike its a must see video even just to know how much work is involved when its time to pay the service bill and to pick a very good dealer service department to do the work... EXCELLENT VIDEO BLOKE cheers james D
Stellar video! I’m swooping up a 2018 Monster 1200S in a couple of months and this is invaluable information. There seems to be such a shortage of detailed DIYs on Ducati’s. Myself and others are truly grateful for you taking the time to make this fantastic video. Subscribed!
Wao. Several times I was looking for a step by step like this. You rock dude! Taking the time doing this job and then editing it for better comprehension. Thanks a lot.
Now I know why this is $1800 service. I've adjusted valves on my BMW and Kawasaki easily but Desmo shim thing is another animal. You also have to wonder how many keepers have been dropped in engines at the dealership. Great tutorial TY
Amazing vid. I have seen some quick how too videos, but nothing even close to this detailed. Doing a job this technical, and documenting it so well at the same time. True badassery. Now I'm confidently scared shitless, instead of just scared shitless.
Wow... young man, you did an amazing job with this video!!! I tip my hat to you. I just bought my first Ducati (2016 Multistrada Enduro) and I am planning to tackle the servicing myself, especially now thanks to your excellent resources!!! I assume the 1198 motor in the Multistrada is very similar to your bike and it should be a breeze - thanks to YOU! SUPERBE!
@Tyler Braden Have you tried using a timing belt pulley tool? I've done that before and can go slow enough to feel the valve tap the piston when I take off the belt
Just a tip. I use fluro disposable gloves to jam in any hole that something could fall into. Use a thin steel rod to poke a bit of the glove down it, even if you cut a finger off the glove. Rags are too bulky and can leave debris. I do this on cars & bikes. Good luck. Also, great video. Bloody brilliant. How long to do both?
Sir, you have just won the gold metal in my book . Thank you thank you thank you ... I've been searching so damn long for a testestreta vid . Subscribing and ordering some maintenance hardware asap . This is a hell of a video buddy .... I just had a bit of a hard time seeing the closers n openers but I'll worry bout that when I get there ...
nice video mate . honestly . I hate the desmo Style Cams and Shit . pretty damn pain in the arse to get it right when the tips are worn off , you'll have to buy new tips with the right clearance . what's wrong with old conventional spring around valve style . way better , stands alot of abuse , easier to adjust , and easy to make the clearance right with the rockers adjustment bolts and nuts .... great Video mate , and Epic Detail .... I have a Ducati scrambler , serviced yesterday , that's why this video got me . i changed the belts, Sparks , Oil , Filter and clutch plates . Today i heard a Ticking noise from the valves , maybe because it's too cold , will check out after 2000 kilometers . and if it only ticks on cold day i am fine with it . but it's way easier on a scramby as it's only 2 valves per cylinder . and you can change the shims and caps without removing the cams . Cheers mate . a Fellow mechanic Comrade . Cheers again Murad Naghway Dudu (Naghway Customs)
I enjoyed your impressive video. I ve been import car tech for 50 years and Honda rider .This was impressive wrenching and very well presented . Never owned a Duc. Seems like a lot of work at low mileage. Hope the riding experience is worth it!
Fascinating vid, thanks ! Couple of suggestions: As the shims and specifications are all metric, why not buy metric feeler gauges to avoid slight inaccuracies of conversion. Also, I'd measure the 10mmm measuring tool to make sure it really is exactly 10.00mm. If it's off it doesn't matter, just subtract whatever it measures.
I bet Ducati mechanics watch this video before doing a valve adjustment. Thank you so much, this is the best step by step video on valve adjustment I have ever seen. I don't even own a Ducati yet
Sheesh... I was holding my breath when you were working on the keepers for the shims. Your video is also extremely helpful! The references, the visuals, you have done a fantastic job and I think Ducati, if not all other manufacturers, should follow your efforts! Great job!
Fantastic video with great detail. I have done two valve adjustments on my multi 2013 (15k & 30k miles) and both times was worried in case I had to change a closer shim, luckily I didn't have to. But now that I have seen your video no more worries ...I wish your video was out earlier. It would have saved me a lot of head scratching and worries. You have explained the process extremely well and now looking forward to my next valve adjustment. Best ever!
I've only ever done my valves on Japanese bikes I've owned. This is an awesome video, sadly I think watching this made me decide to take mine to the shop. I know my limits, and theres a 100% chance I'm dropping one of those keepers into the engine hahaha
Hey Brotheus, here is a very important question that nobody is able to address online: if you change the closer to a bigger size since the gap for the closer is too big, then do you have to change the opener to the corresponding smaller size? Since the opener sits on top of the closer, changing the closer changes the height of the opener. Right?
Okay, anyone reading this: according to Mike, at EMSDUC.com, he stated that each shim, the opener and the closer, are independent of each other. The strange thing for me was that I got different reading for the opener when I changed the closer. And yes, I put the half rings the correct way. I even put the original shims back in and got the exactly the same original measurements. Bought the entire kit from EMSDUC.com and just fitted opener shim until I got the correct measurement. All good now.
In case people don’t know: Desmo Times is shut down until April 2021 due to Military Deployment. See emsduc.com for your valve adjustment needs. Awesome vid man. Looking to get a 1098/1198s this summer. Thanks for all the angles, close ups and feedback. 🇺🇸🙏
I am very impressed with how careful and precise you are! Loved the tips about preventing the small bits from falling into the motor. Congratulations on a job well done!
What a terrific job! I just did this over Thanksgiving (2017) holiday on my 848. It takes a ton of work and energy to document it like you have. Did you notice LT Snyder measures his opening shims between the actual shim and the bottom of the rocker? I initially measured it your way (Ducati's way), and when I did it LT's way, it was about .001-.002" tighter. I didn't have angled feelers, and that would have helped. Didn't your feelers have a 0.0024 or 0.0028 in there? Mine did. In the end, I did it LT's way, and got 0.005" for my openers. I like how you held your closing rockers open with the wood sticks, wish I had thought of that. I put the front fairing back on earlier. Big mistake, had to remove it all again to add water. Thank you!
Thanks Steve. I was back and fourth on where to measure the opener shim I decided to go with what Ducati said only because Ducati said it all my openers were within spec we will see how the bike runs. The angle feeler gauges were a must several times I got different measurements using the straight gauges on the opener shims.
Nice film ! Shows perfectly that those who have a limited budget or limited mechanical skills, should KEEP CLEAR from these bikes ! They must have been deliberately put together in a way that scares any amareur off. The workshop, on the other hand, will probably charge a fotrune for this job. Solution - have allllot of money, or buy a bike that is easy to work on, because SO much patience an to be capable to, actually DIY on this scale - there are not that many.
Interesting thing is happening on my 2012 Multistrada 1200 When I set it at the "home" position, the "T"'s on the cams from both the vertical and horizontal cylinders point towards the valve cover.
Hello from an old guy in upstate New York. Young man, you are an excellent mechanic, intelligent, and very well spoken. I long for the olden days of working on motorcycles, when it was more of a matter of understanding mechanical things. Now it seems like its mostly a matter of unhooking those damn little electrical connectors and getting to fasteners that you can't see or touch, let alone get a tool on. My fingers and eyes are no longer up to that. I do have a question: Are/were you a Ducati tech? If not, how did you get so good on them? (I'm just curious.) Anyways, thanks for your videos and God bless. Man, it sure is dry where you live!
Thanks mate for your reply. I have set mine to Snyders recommendations. I found your video extremely helpful. Previously I've paid around $1200AU for Ducati mechanics to do the job. Having done NO 2 cyl first 2openers reqd change only .003 thou gaps then got to NO 1 cyl . What a dogs breakfast 3 closers an 3 openers were out. Which leads me to conclude that the previous shim check done only 5,000 km ago was a rip off. So doing the job myself has well an truely saved my doe and it's HAS been done.. At the shops you pay your money but do they do it. Thanks again mate cheers
short italian lesson: VA = verticale aspirazione, VS = verticale scarico. OS and OA same for horizontal = orizzontale scarico and aspirazione. All pronunciation CON TEMPERAMENTO PER FAVORE!!!
Thanks for the video! You did an amazing job explaining everything! One of the best Ducati videos I've seen. You didn't leave any detail out that would leave someone confused ! Thanks again will be helping a friend do this job!
Appreciate you making this video. This was one of the things I've been dreading to get done, but the video really helped demystify it and it actually feels far more do-able now. Thank you.
Hey Man, fellow Ducati owner. Thanks for this doing this video. Helped me greatly in doing my my valve clearance adjustments on mine. Subscribe to my channel and we can be UA-cam friends. More good vids I wanna see.
Had 197.000 miles on my 2001 ST2. had 1 valve adjusted at 24.000 miles , checked them a few times , ran a set of belts for 60.000 miles and it ran fine until trans bearing went . I rode it EASY all the time, 3.000 - 5.000 rpm . just sayin 😄
I've got a question: shouldn't the shim measurement been done with the timing belt on? I've heard that it will make a difference since the engine works of course with the timing belt on and without timing belt on the cam wheel the measurement can be quite different
Hello brotheus and everybody, i like to get one of the lt snyder books. It´s not possible to get one in germany. Is there someone who can help me? And: very nice video! greets Uwe
I have been waiting for some pone to show me how to do this well done great video Any reason why you didn’t measure the horizontal shims or did I miss something
I hear Ducati owners cry about two things: 1) The bikes are put together somewhat haphazardly. The best plan is to take the bike apart and build it again. 2) People who do not understand the Desmo valve machinery pretend that they do. Things break if it is not correctly put together.. We have a specialist in our clinic who knows the job. He rides a Triumph.
Having owned and worked on Ducati’s for the past 30 years I can tell you that this is one of the most concise Desmo clearance DIY I have ever seen , well explained, well videoed and well thought out , great job young grasshopper 👍😎

Best DIY video I think I have ever seen. Have a 2011 848 Evo and feel much more confident after having watched. Great job man!
it takes a lot of courage to get your hands on the Ducati engine, more than a cardiologist

Without a doubt, this is THE best instructional video on performing valve clearance checks on these bikes. Outstanding!
Excellent - best DIY video I have ever seen🙌🤗👍🌻
Good job documenting it and thanks for sharing it with the rest of us. I need to do this soon.
The only way to work , organised , clean , have the tools , take your time , be precise , it was a pleasure to watch you at work man awesome video .
Great video! Well explained and thoughtful.....almost like watching Bob Ross, haha. Thanks for taking the time to do this :)
No wonder why Ducati maintenances are so expensive. It seems quite labour intensive, good job!. And thanks for sharing this.
An absolutly great video. Everything is done in a good pase. Well done. I have hit the sub button. 👍🏻🇸🇪🍻
Exceptional, informative video
Very methodical and precise
Kudos to your skill and effort
Thanks for this great video. Im going through my 1098 and changing belts/measuring out everything. Great help!
The best Diy Lesson. Thanks bro. I really apreciate it. Save money
Awesome video - we can’t thank you enough for posting!

I must say well done young man and you should be proud of this video.
the best diy on youtube!!!
I'm so glad I found this video. Will be using for 2004 749S, I just bought. Super cheap but all in parts.
Thanks for the like, I was going to move to Az (Tucson) btw. Got my ID and all. But that heat...I prefer to stay in sky high expensive San Diego.
Good god... my 7500mile maintenance on my evo is coming up, this video has me tempted to do it myself and save 1500 bucks. 🤯
RPrevolution25 Im contemplating buying an 848 Evo. I have a test ride this weekend.
@@iCGreen_ do it, my 2013 was the best thing I ever bought.
How can some one give this video thumps down or unlike? I dont get it. Very very good work.
ducati shops that want to do the job for a lot of money
@@iannamico Ducati dealers give thumbs down
They dont own one😂😂
Haterz will keep hatin buddy, they will. Hehe
Nice explained. Now i know not to do it myself 😅. Really nice to see! Hope you still enjoying Ducati.
I enjoyed your impressive video. I ve been import car tech for 50 years and Honda rider .This was impressive wrenching and very well presented . Never owned a Duc. Seems like a lot of work at low mileage. Hope the riding experience is worth it!
Wow, your video of performing the valve clearance demystifies the process. Thank you.
I can see why they charge so much to do it for you , totally worth the money ........ what a job !!
Thanks for this, it's very detailed and well thought out.
I bet Ducati mechanics watch this video before doing a valve adjustment. Thank you so much, this is the best step by step video on valve adjustment I have ever seen. I don't even own a Ducati yet
Man you are a star, very good tutorial now I feel confident to do it myself on my 1098 very good!
Just asking, do valve clearance only for vertical parts? How about, horizontal parts, have to do so?.
Sheesh... I was holding my breath when you were working on the keepers for the shims. Your video is also extremely helpful! The references, the visuals, you have done a fantastic job and I think Ducati, if not all other manufacturers, should follow your efforts! Great job!
Well done!!!! Thanks for your in detail home made video!!
This a fantastic video! Thank you!
Simply brilliant these vids mate, really helping me here in the uk this week👍👍 really surprised just how easy these are to work on
Fantastic video with great detail. Best ever!
Superb educational video, thanks for your efforts
I've only ever done my valves on Japanese bikes I've owned. This is an awesome video, sadly I think watching this made me decide to take mine to the shop. I know my limits, and theres a 100% chance I'm dropping one of those keepers into the engine hahaha

When I set it at the "home" position, the "T"'s on the cams from both the vertical and horizontal cylinders point towards the valve cover.
Stupid question. Do you have to adjust valve clearance for horizontal head?
Yes you do. I only showed the vertical head for ease of demonstration.
Damn good video. Great instructions. I'm confident after watching this.

What would happen if you never did the valve adjustment ? would you be down on power, rough running, poor fuel economy or could you do damage ?
herobo123456 simple answer blow your engine. Valve can hit your piston when out of spec.
Get your hands on a ducati 996 and do a detailed vid on valve adjustment. Nothing on youtube with this much detail and walk thru for 996. Awesome job.
you're very patient & obviously clever , great job...im jealous haha
I've got a question: shouldn't the shim measurement been done with the timing belt on? I've heard that it will make a difference since the engine works of course with the timing belt on and without timing belt on the cam wheel the measurement can be quite different

Thank you for taking the time to make this. I have LT's manual, but it's incredibly helpful to see it done too.
I have been waiting for some pone to show me how to do this well done great video
Any reason why you didn’t measure the horizontal shims or did I miss something
Shouldnt the closers be adjustet when not pressed?
I dont see the sense to check clearance (? don't know the word..) when the valve is operated?
28:21 Now that there is Funny... 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the video you did a good job was going to buy a damaged 848 think I will pass
You are clearly mechanically inclined. Mighty fine work.
