Hi there, i have a Casio CT-S1 for some time now ans i love it but the 61 keys are limiting my work so i want to use the CT-S1 as a sound module and play it with my 88 and 76 keys midi keyboards. As the CT-S1 has o DIN midi IN i purchased a Kenton Midi/USB interface. It works and the CT-S1 responds to my playing but the sounds are cut short, even with the sustain pedal. What could be the ussue here? Are there some settings in the CT-S1 ? I already swithed the bluetooth off but no change.
Rik Vanhoenacker Hi, the most common cause would be running out of Polyphony (new notes replacing old notes). Assuming you are not actually sending too many notes (sending notes across lots of midi channels for example), check you don't have a loop back going on (midi notes send are being passed back and send again).
@@IbandUK The CT-S1 has 64 notes polyphony and i have the cutoff notes problem when i push 4-6 notes :-) only sending via midi channel 1, midi loop is not possible as there is only the midi out of my mOXF8 sending to the midi IN of the Kenton, no midi OUT connected
Rik Vanhoenacker The most likely cause of the note cut off then is the same note being played (sent/recieved) twice (echo). I would check the MoxF8 settings or try a different keyboard. Try turning the keyboard midi setting 'Local On' to 'Local Off'.
@@IbandUK Just checked with an Ultranova and the problem does not appear so it's something with the MOXF8 but in the midi settings i do'nt find anything that could cause this :-(( I do'nt have this problem when playing other modules from different brands.
Rik Vanhoenacker You could try connecting another keyboard to the moxf8 Midi Din In and the moxf8 Midi Din Thru to the kenton. Which would at least narrow down where the problem is. Or contact Kenton, the guys there are pretty clued up on this kind of thing generally.
Loststylus Hi, in theory yes (I haven't got an ipad to test it) but would be overkill (and an expensive option). You would need a camera adapter cable and a Usb A type to B type usb cable or a Usb C type to B type cable (depending on your ipad) as well. A cheaper option would be a Usb to Midi Din cable but personally I would use a Widi Master (if your midi device has a Midi Din Out socket to power it) and connect to the ipad using Bluetooth Midi.
Radek Pilich Hi, I hadn't so I just this minute tried it. I connected 2 midi controllers to a class compliant usb hub and the hub to the Kenton usb port. Connected the Kenton to a synth using the midi DIN in socket on the synth and the midi DIN out socket on the Kenton. So now I can say yes, I have tried it and yes, it does work.
I recall reading somewhere once that the Kento can handle up to four connected USB devices. Can’t seem to find that now. I believe it’s unique in that regard (thus justified its high price) where other USB host boxes cannot use a hub. I’m assuming a RPi can handle hubbed devices better. Id love to see a thorough examination of this topic somewhere but info is pretty thin on the ground
SANNIDI Hi, I think the pa300 is not class compliant so I think the pa300 will not work with the midi host device. Class compliant means it does not need a driver to work. The midi host device only works with class compliant midi devices.
Manit Sony Hi, thanks for your comments. I would be interested to know if there was a particular reason why you had to upgrade the firmware because I haven't upgraded the firmware on mine.

reaz allykhan Hi, an ios device is already a midi usb host so you don't need a Kenton Midi usb host. To connect a midi din synth or controller to an ios device you need the A type USB adapter cable (camera adapter etc) and a USB to Midi Din cable (I use a M Audio Midisport with my Android phone). To connect a synth or controller by midi USB, make sure it is class compliant and connect it to the ios device with a USB cable and an A type USB adapter cable.
Hello sir. My Akai EWI Solo lacks an analog midi out port. Can I use this converter by connecting it between Akai EWI Solo and analog sound midi modules? If this is not possible, please tell me another possibility of converting from usb to midi. Thank you
Vyacheslav Pinkhasov Hi, the Akai EWI Solo looks like it sends just note and CC commands via midi in play mode, so assuming that it is class compliant (doesn't need a software driver to work with Windows or Mac), then it should work with Kenton Midi Usb Host without any problems. Just plug your EWI usb cable into the usb port and connect a midi Din cable from midi Din out socket to the midi Din in socket on your sound module. There are of course other makers of Midi Usb Host devices but I have never heard of anyone ever having a problem with the Kenton (unlike some other makes).
Hi... I have a QQ? I have a Yamaha DGX-660 with like yours a USB-B type connection on the back. Now I would like to mix keyboard music on my mac via Presonus Midi Audio box. This comes with some serious studio mixer software. That's why I want to use the Presonus. If I bought the Kenton Midi USB host would this then work. Cheers Chris
Chris Webber Hi, thanks for question. You don't need a Kenton Midi USB host. You can connect the DGX-660 straight to the mac, connect a USB B type to A type cable (printer type cable) between the B type connector on your DXG and a USB port on your Mac, to record midi notes in the studio software. For audio you will need to connect a stereo to left/right mono cable between the headphone out socket on the DGX and the 2 mono inputs on the presonus audio box. Page 58 of the DXG user manual will show you how to set the output of the headset socket to Line Out, which you will need to do. That page also shows how to switch the DXG speakers on when the headphone socket is used, so you can hear your playing while recording. Hope this helps.
@@IbandUK Hi... That's great and I've done that which is cool. But I did want it to run via my Presonus Audio box. So I can layer my keyboard music on the software. Can this be possible or am I missing something here?
Chris Webber Hi, the midi sockets on the AudioBox are so old synths without a USB midi connector can be easily connected to a computer. These sockets do exactly the same thing as your connection between the usb midi port on your keyboard and the usb port on your computer, they just pass the same midi commands and not any audio. So the sound from your keyboard will still only be from the headphone line out socket and the midi commands will be exactly the same. Sorry, what do mean by layering your keyboard music on the software? If you want to record two separate sounds from your keyboard to 2 separate tracks in the software, you will need to record one sound then go back and record the other. Sorry if I sound like I have my wires crossed.
hello Sir, I have a korg krome and a vortex2, with the wireless vortex adapter is it possible to connect directly to my krome? or do i need a usb host? in korg kronos yes it is possible, in krome i would like to know. thanks
Hello, sir. I appreciate your explanation. Could you please tell me, what is the difference between "kenton usb midi host mkii" and "Doremidi usb in-out midi Interface host". It looks the same to me. Thank you 😊
Nice video. FYI DoReMidi USB host same function less than half price than Kenton. .. I used it to connect EWi to Roland Integra and Yamaha Motif. same function just less popular
Do you happen to know of the USB host can also power the controller? I want to connect an Arturia Minilab MKII to an analog synth and there is no other way to power the controller than through the USB port. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Anthony d Hi, yes, the Kenton midi usb host mkll sends power to the usb port. It uses a 5v usb power adapter so sends 5v to the usb port. I don't know what voltage the minilab mkll requires but 5v is pretty standard and it powers my Vortex Wireless 2 when I connect it to the Kenton using a usb cable so I would think it should work fine.
very helpful. could you potentially use this to plug two controllers (1 usb, 1 din) into one sound module? Ive been controlling my volca with a small midi controller, and the plan is to use the kenton to control the volca with a larger USB MIDI controller. Will it work with both plugged in?
Edward Roth Hi, to connect the two controllers to the volca midi Din socket, connect the midi usb controller to a Kenton midi usb host, then connect the Kenton midi usb host and the midi Din controller to a Kenton Midi Merge box, finally connect the Kenton Midi Merge box to the Volca. is Kenton would be used to convert the midi usb output of the usb midi controller to a midi Din output.
You could use the 5-pin DIN MIDI IN for one controller and the DIN MIDI OUT for a sound module, but I'm not sure if the MIDI In DIN will send to the MIDI Out.
Nice video! Sir can you tell me, can i connect nectar lx49 (with only usb connection) to other synht such as yamaha dx27? And be able to play it trough nectar? Thanks in advance
Pro Logo Designs Thanks 😀👍 Assuming the nektar lx49 is class compliant (which it seems to be) and the synth has a midi din In socket (which the yamaha dx27 appears to have), then you could connect the lx49 to the usb port on a Kenton Midi USB Host and connect the dx27 to the midi din out socket of the Kenton. You should then be able to play the lx49 keys instead of the dx27 keys. You may need to check the midi settings on both to make sure they are using the same midi channel(s) and the dx27 is set to receive midi data. You would need to check the dx27 midi implementation chart to check what other midi commands (like program change) are supported.

Excellent video and it makes ne wonder why nobody noticed this USB only problem ! Without a Kenton Host or Miditech Host, it is impossible to do the task of driving another slave keyboard like you just did ! And why this video does not has like 100 thousand views by now ! Btw the hack video in which you plug one din 5pin midi cable from Midi Out to Midi In ...can you explain what the Kenton might wbe doing or routing the midi data ?? Why you knew this hack would work ? Thank you very much !
dnantis Hi, thank you very much for your feedback,I'm glad you like my video. The hack works like this... Midi sent to the usb port is passed to the midi din out socket. Midi sent to the midi din in socket is sent to the usb port. The midi din cable connects the midi din out socket to the midi din in socket... So... Midi sent to the usb port is sent to the midi din out socket, runs down the midi din cable and back into the midi din in socket and therefore back to the usb port. The Kenton simply becomes a midi loop, so the usb midi controller actually sends the midi back to itself. The class compliant hub lets you plug in more than one controller/synth to the Kenton usb port, so all midi is technically sent to all connected controllers/synths but midi controllers usually dont accept midi input so only the synth gets the midi input. I've been working with midi for about 30 years so I kinda just new the hack would work.
alexandre jumel Thanks 😀👍 Pretty much everything adds latency (even the distance of your ear from the speaker) so yes, it will add latency but the amount of latency is tiny so is not noticeable to me
tubeMonger thanks for your comment. I thought you would need a Pi starter kit and some knowledge of programming to set it up though, which would be more expensive and rather more hassle to set up.
Can I use 2 CME widi masters (PC interface + Ketron) and a regular USB cable to power up Komplete Kontrol m32 and send midi data to control my DAW? Does the Ketron come with power supply?
Juan Andrés I assume you are wanting to connect your m32 wirelessly to your computer? Yes the Kenton Midi Usb Host comes with a power supply. Assuming the m32 is class compliant (works without a driver), you can connect the m32 to the Kenton. If your audio interface has midi Din in and out sockets then you can connect 1 widi master to the audio interface and a 2nd widi master to the Kenton.

Rik Vanhoenacker
Hi, the most common cause would be running out of Polyphony (new notes replacing old notes).
Rik Vanhoenacker
The most likely cause of the note cut off then is the same note being played (sent/recieved) twice (echo).
Rik Vanhoenacker
You could try connecting another keyboard to the moxf8 Midi Din In and the moxf8 Midi Din Thru to the kenton. Which would at least narrow down where the problem is. Or contact Kenton, the guys there are pretty clued up on this kind of thing generally.
Can I connect it to iPad to use midi din out?
Loststylus
Hi, in theory yes (I haven't got an ipad to test it) but would be overkill (and an expensive option).
Have you tried if it works with multiple MIDI controllers connected via USB hub?
Radek Pilich
Hi, I hadn't so I just this minute tried it. I connected 2 midi controllers to a class compliant usb hub and the hub to the Kenton usb port. Connected the Kenton to a synth using the midi DIN in socket on the synth and the midi DIN out socket on the Kenton. So now I can say yes, I have tried it and yes, it does work.
@@IbandUK Wow, great, thank you for that. It seems that MIDI USB host devices can generally handle two MIDI controllers.
I recall reading somewhere once that the Kento can handle up to four connected USB devices. Can’t seem to find that now. I believe it’s unique in that regard (thus justified its high price) where other USB host boxes cannot use a hub. I’m assuming a RPi can handle hubbed devices better. Id love to see a thorough examination of this topic somewhere but info is pretty thin on the ground
very helpful. with the same thought can i connect the m-audio mk3 with my korg pa300 arranger??it will work?? thaks!!!
SANNIDI
Hi, I think the pa300 is not class compliant so I think the pa300 will not work with the midi host device.
Class compliant means it does not need a driver to work. The midi host device only works with class compliant midi devices.
Just what I was looking for, thank you!!!
Moisés Gómez
Hi, thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you found my video helpful.
Hi I have this? Love it had to upgrade firmware with sysex. There are cheaper chinese option but I bought this and I am happy.
Manit Sony
Hi, thanks for your comments. I would be interested to know if there was a particular reason why you had to upgrade the firmware because I haven't upgraded the firmware on mine.
@@IbandUK hi i had upgraded the firmware because i had korg micro midi keyboard 49 keys it has usb hub. to make devices with usb hub built in work we had to update to the latest firmware using sysex. at first i thought my unit was faulty i could not upload sysex. then i changed to my good old edirol um1 updated fine and works well.
Manit Sony
Hi, thank you for your reply. That's very useful to know, thanks again.
Many thanks for a clear explanation. Do you know if it will handle breath controls from an AKAI, EWI wind controller?
Brian Mason
Thanks
I don't have a breath controller to test it but if you contact Kenton, their websites says they are happy to confirm midi controller compatibility.
Hi does it work with os device??
reaz allykhan
Hi, an ios device is already a midi usb host so you don't need a Kenton Midi usb host.
Thank you
Vyacheslav Pinkhasov
Hi, the Akai EWI Solo looks like it sends just note and CC commands via midi in play mode, so assuming that it is class compliant (doesn't need a software driver to work with Windows or Mac), then it should work with Kenton Midi Usb Host without any problems. Just plug your EWI usb cable into the usb port and connect a midi Din cable from midi Din out socket to the midi Din in socket on your sound module. There are of course other makers of Midi Usb Host devices but I have never heard of anyone ever having a problem with the Kenton (unlike some other makes).
@@IbandUK Thank you 😊
Chris Webber
Hi, thanks for question.
Chris Webber
Hi, the midi sockets on the AudioBox are so old synths without a USB midi connector can be easily connected to a computer. Sorry if I sound like I have my wires crossed.
hello Sir, I have a korg krome and a vortex2, with the wireless vortex adapter is it possible to connect directly to my krome? or do i need a usb host? in korg kronos yes it is possible, in krome i would like to know. thanks
Hi, according to Korg, the Krome does not support connecting the Vortex directly to the Krome, so you would need a Midi USB Host
Hello, sir.
I appreciate your explanation. Could you please tell me, what is the difference between "kenton usb midi host mkii" and "Doremidi usb in-out midi Interface host". It looks the same to me.
Thank you 😊
Vyacheslav Pinkhasov
Thanks 👍
I don't have a Doremidi to test so I don't know what, if any, differences exist.
Doremidi has usb power in. Other than that its the same.
Nice video. FYI DoReMidi USB host same function less than half price than Kenton. .. I used it to connect EWi to Roland Integra and Yamaha Motif. same function just less popular
Giordano C
Hi, thanks. There are now wireless alternatives on the market too.
@@IbandUK wireless! I didn't know thanks a lot.. I will definitely check them out 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Do you happen to know of the USB host can also power the controller? I want to connect an Arturia Minilab MKII to an analog synth and there is no other way to power the controller than through the USB port. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Anthony d
Hi, yes, the Kenton midi usb host mkll sends power to the usb port.
Edward Roth
Hi, to connect the two controllers to the volca midi Din socket, connect the midi usb controller to a Kenton midi usb host, then connect the Kenton midi usb host and the midi Din controller to a Kenton Midi Merge box, finally connect the Kenton Midi Merge box to the Volca.
is Kenton would be used to convert the midi usb output of the usb midi controller to a midi Din output.
You could use the 5-pin DIN MIDI IN for one controller and the DIN MIDI OUT for a sound module, but I'm not sure if the MIDI In DIN will send to the MIDI Out.
The easiest way is to get a 4 port usb hub (they’re cheap) which goes into the Kenton. That’s how I’ve been using mine and it works reliably.
Nice video! Sir can you tell me, can i connect nectar lx49 (with only usb connection) to other synht such as yamaha dx27? And be able to play it trough nectar? Thanks in advance
Pro Logo Designs
Thanks 😀👍
Assuming the nektar lx49 is class compliant (which it seems to be) and the synth has a midi din In socket (which the yamaha dx27 appears to have), then you could connect the lx49 to the usb port on a Kenton Midi USB Host and connect the dx27 to the midi din out socket of the Kenton. You should then be able to play the lx49 keys instead of the dx27 keys. You may need to check the midi settings on both to make sure they are using the same midi channel(s) and the dx27 is set to receive midi data. You would need to check the dx27 midi implementation chart to check what other midi commands (like program change) are supported.
is the kenton thru5 ok or has it been superceded ?
@timcoffey5927
Hi, Personally, I use a CME Widi Thru5, so I don't know about the Kenton Thru5.
Thank you for this very informative video; do you know how to directly connect 2 keyboards which each have only USB midi to host without going through a computer

Hi, thank you for your feedback and thanks for your question.
Yes, check out my midi usb to midi usb hack video...
ua-cam.com/video/NuKnk3HaZFA/v-deo.html
Excellent video and it makes ne wonder why nobody noticed this USB only
problem !
Without a Kenton Host or Miditech Host, it is impossible to do the task of driving another slave keyboard like you just did !
And why this video does not has like 100 thousand views by now !
Btw the hack video in which you plug one din 5pin midi cable
from Midi Out to Midi In ...can you explain what the Kenton might wbe doing or
routing the midi data ??
Why you knew this hack would work ?
Thank you very much !
dnantis
Hi, thank you very much for your feedback,I'm glad you like my video.
Hi ! very good video... does this interface add any latency ?
alexandre jumel
Thanks 😀👍
Pretty much everything adds latency (even the distance of your ear from the speaker) so yes, it will add latency but the amount of latency is tiny so is not noticeable to me
Mano thanks i bought mentono Winnipeg Bk7 a ne vortex, great

Looks like what I need but you didn’t explain the connections well
Gerry
Connects a usb midi controller to a Midi Din Synth or sound module. Or vice versa. Using a USB-A cable and 2 midi din cables.
Raspberry Pi is a good choice when you have only USB (MIDI) cables. A lot cheaper as well.
tubeMonger
thanks for your comment.
Juan Andrés
I assume you are wanting to connect your m32 wirelessly to your computer?
Yes the Kenton Midi Usb Host comes with a power supply. Assuming the m32 is class compliant (works without a driver), you can connect the m32 to the Kenton. If your audio interface has midi Din in and out sockets then you can connect 1 widi master to the audio interface and a 2nd widi master to the Kenton.
I got mine from Hobbycraft its great and small
