To eliminate the need for the computer, of course! Who wants to take a computer with them everywhere they go (ie: gigs) and subject themselves to all the pitfalls (blue screen, latency, etc, etc, etc)?
The advantage depends on what you want to do or the problem you want to solve. In the video, he has a keytar controller that produces no sound, so he wants to connect it to something that will generate sound as he plays the controller on stage. So he only needs to connect those two. He says he wants to eliminate the computer, but his answer doesn't go into explaining other scenarios you may be thinking of. Another scenario would be you are a home user and you want to play a controller or keyboard and use sequencer software on a PC to record/arrange, etc. Now, if you own only this keytar with 5-pin MIDI out, you would need the box because you can't plug in the MIDI 5-pin to a USB port. Then that's the advantage. If the same home user owns the Casio keyboard which has MIDI through USB then he can plug it directly to the PC USB. So then there would be no advantage, or no way to use it, since the box need one side to be MIDI 5-pin.
Thank you Chuck, I was wondering over this 'problem'. Many of these keyboards seem to skip the traditional Left / Right jack audio- outputs aswell. Is there also a solution for connecting such a keyboard to a external PA, to get a stereo singnal out? Thank you!
According to the LK-210 manual the keyboard is general MIDI compliant. The list of messages it can send and receive is in the appendix. The Kenton should have no problem with it.
Hi Piano Man Chuck Thank you for this video Question..... I have a New Yamaha P-515 and a 2.5 year old Roland RD-88 with an out of warranty noisy loose PHA-4 action (the reason I got fed up and bought the Yamaha P-515).....Great action! Now, The RD-88 has MIDI out and USB out but does not have MIDI in! Unbelievable🤔 I wanted to use the sounds in the RD-88 by using the Yamaha P-515 as a controller Being that I paid $1,300 for it 2.5 yrs. ago I sent an email to Roland for a solution but no answer.......I'm obviously very disappointed Will this unit, or something less expensive work? I know that you are well aware of both keyboards Any help would be appreciated Thank you for your channel and great info. Sincerely, Dave
I can't be 100% positive without physically hooking that up and trying it out to see... but I'm reasonably certain that the Kenton MIDI USB Host would work in this situation. Yes there's other USB / MIDI Host boards out there but the Kenton unit is top notch with no problems. Others have reported problems with other host products. I would recommend getting it from Amazon at this link: amzn.to/3XyQQfg - that way if it turns out that it doesn't work for you, there's free returns!
Hi, Chuck. Thank you for your video. I would like to ask you about a possibility, but as I don't know about this theme I can have a stupid doubt (ah, and sorry for my english). I thought that I could use a adapter USB type A to USB type B: www.amazon.ca/Generic-Type-Female-Male-Adapter/dp/B000AA2SMS and them, use this one: www.thomann.de/pt/maudio_midisport_uno.htm?ref=search_rslt_midi+usb+adapter_154560 Is this possible? Thank you so much!
+Alex Duarte - No. With USB MIDI, one side is to the device, the other side requires a USB-Compliant computer. That's the purpose of the Kenton device, it IS (replaces) the computer so that this can be made possible.
There are less expensive units out there, but according to users on various forums, this one is the most reliable. The good thing is that this can be used on just about any USB-based MIDI keyboard, so you basically buy it once and can use it with many different boards.
Richard Turner never going to happen, too many old synths that are way better than anything out now use din midi ,none of my gear is usb only ,I would not buy anything that was USB only
USB has a number of disadvantages. MIDI is electrically isolated so no ground loops. MIDI connectors haven't changed in 40 years and are backwards compatible over that entire timespan yet USB is on yet another iteration after just a few years. USB is computer oriented but MIDI is performance oriented.

So then there would be no advantage, or no way to use it, since the box need one side to be MIDI 5-pin.
friend try to connect the havian 30 but I could not not recognize it the hust de sevilla solf
Thank you Chuck, I was wondering over this 'problem'. Many of these keyboards seem to skip the traditional Left / Right jack audio- outputs aswell. Is there also a solution for connecting such a keyboard to a external PA, to get a stereo singnal out? Thank you!
+Hans Palenlader - Yes, use the headphone jacks.
da man
Would the Midiplus USB Host work the same way? Thanks
From the comments I've seen that one only does MIDI notes but not clock or sysex. The Kenton allegedly transmits all.
can i connect the kenton to a casio lk210? is not a midi device, is just a regular keyboard
According to the LK-210 manual the keyboard is general MIDI compliant. The list of messages it can send and receive is in the appendix. The Kenton should have no problem with it.
The device is the solution, but how expensive it is!!!
Hi Piano Man Chuck
Thank you for this video
Question.....
Unbelievable🤔
I wanted to use the sounds in the RD-88 by using the Yamaha P-515 as a controller
Being that I paid $1,300 for it 2.5 yrs. ago
I sent an email to Roland for a solution but no answer.......I'm obviously very disappointed
Will this unit, or something less expensive work?
I know that you are well aware of both keyboards
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you for your channel and great info.
Sincerely,
Dave
I can't be 100% positive without physically hooking that up and trying it out to see... but I'm reasonably certain that the Kenton MIDI USB Host would work in this situation. Yes there's other USB / MIDI Host boards out there but the Kenton unit is top notch with no problems. Others have reported problems with other host products. I would recommend getting it from Amazon at this link: amzn.to/3XyQQfg - that way if it turns out that it doesn't work for you, there's free returns!
@@PianoManChuck Thanks and may God bless✌
Dave
Midi 2.0 is coming out 🎉
Hi, Chuck. Thank you for your video.
I would like to ask you about a possibility, but as I don't know about this theme I can have a stupid doubt (ah, and sorry for my english).
I thought that I could use a adapter USB type A to USB type B: www.amazon.ca/Generic-Type-Female-Male-Adapter/dp/B000AA2SMS
and them, use this one: www.thomann.de/pt/maudio_midisport_uno.htm?ref=search_rslt_midi+usb+adapter_154560
Is this possible?
Thank you so much!
+Alex Duarte - No. With USB MIDI, one side is to the device, the other side requires a USB-Compliant computer. That's the purpose of the Kenton device, it IS (replaces) the computer so that this can be made possible.
+PianoManChuck I understood! Thank you and congratulations for your work! have a good time.
Could you please post a link to the product as well? Thanks
That link was posted in the video at 4:43 You could also check out eBay, Reverb, etc for "Kenton USB Host" or "Kenton MIDI USB Host"
Cool it exists but completely overpriced for basic electronic. I guess it is faisable on Arduino, I'll check it out.
There are less expensive units out there, but according to users on various forums, this one is the most reliable. The good thing is that this can be used on just about any USB-based MIDI keyboard, so you basically buy it once and can use it with many different boards.
Any results, yet?
What is the device name?
I have been lamenting the poor quality of usb connectors forever, they are definitely the weakest link in the signal chain!!
That and 1/8" mini plugs.
It work ?
Five pin din
USB Midi is a new Standard which is here to stay, the older 5-pin system will be Obsolete soon .
USB is computer oriented but MIDI is performance oriented.
iqi616 well said
Boss and Roland use Trs midi and there are midi a 5pin and midi b 5pin to trs connectors . I wishe they'd standardised it
more than usd 100,,,, right,,,
But Kenton is very expencive, more than 50% more, than other Midi to Host solutions!
Yes, but its extremely reliable!
could you please name some of the other MIDI TO HOST solutions?
