Bulleit rye was the first whisky I really liked. I have moved on but every time I have I still like it. Right now I’m really enjoying all thing Wild Turkey.
Thanks guys enjoyed watching. This is a good smooth high rye, nice tasting, with a decent enough body... whiskey. Favorite to have around all year, and affordable. For a special occasion... 1776 rye whiskey which is unfiltered, has more of an oily body, some more bite and spice, tastes great, being 100 proof is a great one, for just a few more dollars. Cheers guys.
Completely agree on this being a great, easy, low proof rye. While not my favorite rye, it is our daily pour/decanter rye we go to by default and one of my wife’s favorites in general. I like the revisit concept, looking forward to more!
Like Erin, Bulleit was my gateway rye, and I still have a soft spot for it. Though I don't currently have a bottle of it at home (after going through 2 of the 1.75 L bottles during COVID lock-down) since there isn't any room in the home bar (or shelves, or bunker, or 2nd secret bunker 😅), but I think I will make a little room for it after I finish off a currently open bottle.
I was a scotch drinker for years but a friend turned me on to Bulleit Rye.. It was love at first sip, well maybe second sip. That was my entry into Bourbon too. Still love a good Rye. I need to pick up a bottle of Bulleit real soon.
I'm looking forward to this series! Great classic bottle. I'm always surprised how tame the mint/grass notes are given the high percentage of rye. Cheers!
I like the concept of revisiting old favorites. After watching your live stream last night, I decided to have some Wild Turkey 101 for the first time in a while. I often drink Rare Breed, Russell's Reserve 10 and Single Barrel, but it had been a while since I had the WT101. I had really forgotten what a great bourbon it is, especially for the price. I enjoyed it tremendously. By the way, Bulleit was my first venture into rye, and I think I may have to revisit it as well. Cheers!
It’s a really good one, and a great value. Like she said, I don’t get near the list of flavors they do. I just sip it and enjoy it. Even drunk neat, it’s a great choice in ryes.
First had it in 2013, loved it then. What I didn’t realize is four roses is my go to bourbon typically and I never knew it was high rye so maybe that’s why?
Love this series and will have to try some Bulleit Rye here soon! After having been in a deep dive of whiskey for over a year now starting to circle back to some of the bourbons that made fall in love with whiskey and essentially do the same thing you guys are doing. Curious to see how this keeps going, cheers🥃!
Love Bulleit Rye. It actually wasn’t until a bit into my whiskey journey that I decided to finally give it a chance and has since become an absolute staple due to pure enjoyability and price point.
I just tried this rye today. I was looking for a nice rye for a steak marinade I was putting together this morning, and I gave Bulleit 95 a try. This is hands down the best rye I have ever tasted. SO smooth. It set that steak marinade up in grand style, and I sipped away the rest over the course of the day as the steaks sat in the marinade. Smooth as silk. No chaser needed at all. Spicy and peppery like a rye should be. Absolutely outstanding.
I always get a very strong herbal note on the younger 95/5 ryes that just bothers me when I have them neat. However that same note sings in cocktails. I find that note tends to age out as things get past 8 years or so. I love my 5610 G-Shock. I mainly wear it for trips to the driving range. But I use it every time I pick up a mechanical watch that needs setting. It's always there with perfect time synced to the atomic clock.
Funny thing that I just had this rye again a week ago. Was at a bar that didn't have anything really. Not even WT101. But I did spot this bottle and was like yup I'll take it. It's been years since the last time I had it. I thought it was pretty good.
Bulleit rye is one of my favorites and I haven't had it in a while either. I have purchased a 2nd bottle of the 12 year rye that I'm holding onto becuase it was difficult to find a 2nd bottle.
I just bought a bottle of this tonight just because I've never had an extremely high rye bourbon. I just poured a glass and this is absolutely the most mild bourbon I've ever sipped! Not even a hint of alcohol burn in this. It's good, but very different from what I normally sip. For $25 it's a good buy.
There are many Ryes that I enjoy. However, Bulliet Rye is my "House Rye" and I always have it on hand. It's high quality, consistent from bottle to bottle and in my opinion underpriced. (Not that I want it to go up.)
I get what Josh was saying, that lime green make me think of herbal essence. That one doesn't give me a headache like the regular bourbon by Bulliet. Rye is much better. Sweet and black licorice, fresh cut wood
You know now that you talk about this i remember going to a bar years ago and somehow i ended up with bulliet rye. I actually enjoyed it and got it for a while then quit getting it. I have stayed away from ryes because i am not so sure about ryes. Maybe i need to give some more ryes a try. Where should i go from bulliet rye if i want to explore more ryes?!?!
Two of our favorite lower proof non-legacy ryes are Hard Truth High Road Rye and Middle West Spirits Dark Pumpernickel Rye. It’s also worth checking our Michter’s as well. And for big proof and flavor, Jack Daniel’s barrel proof rye is unmatched in our book.
@stuffandwhiskey I have had michters rye in my hand a few different times but kind of chickened out! I know I like bourbon and I know I like scotch so I don't know why I am scared of rye. I guess I am afraid I will hate it is am much peated scotch hahaha but I will buy jack single barrel barrel proof rye if I can find it!
If you like Old Forester, you might try their rye. That was one of the first ryes I got into. It kind of tastes like Old Forester with a Christmas spice kick. It's usually under 30 bucks. If you're a Knob Creek fan, their rye is pretty decent as a "bourbon drinker's rye". However, I realize Jim Beam products seem to be a "love it or hate it" bunch. Higher up the price scale I like the 100 proof New Riff 6 year Malted Rye (~$70) and most recently I got the Bulleit 12 year rye, which is quite flavorful at only 92 proof. At $60 for a 12 year, I thought it a decent price.
It's in my collection, but collecting dust. I'm not a big fan of rye but I keep trying them. Eventually I'll find one I really like.... maybe... hopefully. My next Monday series is all rye whiskey from my collection. I'm up to 10 in my collection and they have all been just okay. Sagamore double oak is probably the highest ranking rye in my collection.
We're still strategizing what to send your way and just need a little breathing room to put together some samples for you. Thinking we might have some ryes that could sway you if you enjoy Sagamore Double Oak.
I'm trying Bulleit Rye and Jack Daniels Rye right now, the basic offerings, bought them both this evening,… the Jack is way more complex and interesting/enjoyable. The Jack is twice as dark in color than the Bulleit,… so that's indicative of additional flavor factors. Plus, Jack make their own brew? Bulleit doesn't?
Bulleitt 95 was the first rye I tried that wasn't in a cocktail and I guess I wasn't prepared, because the spiciness of that first sip nearly knocked me off the barstool. After letting it sit for a while, though, the following sips were much more pleasurable. That was a few years ago, however, and thankfully my palate has developed since then. I'm probably in the minority in that I don't dinstinctly prefer rye over bourbon, or vice versa. That might be because I'm not so far along in my whiskey journey. I'm going to follow your lead and rebuy one or two of the bottles I enjoyed when I first started this trip. One that comes to mind is Rebel (Rebel Yell?) 100 proof bourbon. It's a wheater. Have you two tried it?
We've got a bottle of Rebel 100 that we haven't done much with beyond initially sipping it. We do need to get it into some matchups. It's a fine product for the money ($20 is what we paid for our bottle) but not really the profile either of us gravitate to personally. Any ideas on a bottle to put it into a head-to-head against?
@@stuffandwhiskey It's $22 now here in Chicago (Binny's... do you have Binny's in TN?) though I think I paid $24 or $25 when I bought it about 6-8 months ago. My first thought for a head-to-head match-up would be Maker's 46, thought that's somewhat more expensive. Maybe Larceny Small Batch ($25) or Evan Williams 1783 ($23,) due to affordability. I'm very curious to see how much I'll enjoy Rebel 100 this time around, as I went through my recent purchases of Four Roses Small Batch and Elijah Craig Small Batch (definitely not wheaters) like a hot knife through butter. (Off topic...Are you two going to visit Chicago any time soon? It would be awesome to share a pour with you two, and I know just the place.)
It’s a very “rye” rye and a great one to try. Get this and Sazerac rye if you can find it (or Russell’s 6 year rye if you can’t find Sazerac) and compare the two. Bulleit is very rye-forward and mmmm adult Sazerac and Russell’s are more subtle Kentucky ryes. You can learn a LOT about your palate and preferences just by comparing two ryes that differ.
Bulleit Rye is good for cocktails, but I prefer Dickel Rye. It's effectively the same product (both are 95/5 MGP), Dickel is a little cheaper and honestly tastes more robust.
I'm not a big fan of Sazerac rye, and I generally like most ryes. I still have some so I need to revisit it, but I wasn't impressed. Never had Bulleit rye.
We'll be doing a revisit on Sazerac rye at some point as well. It was one of the earlier "allocated" bottles we got, which is funny to say about such a middling $30 bottle of rye. We'll see if it fares any better on revisit.
Man, this is my least favorite rye. Love rye, but this tastes like dirt to me. Flunks out of every blind I've done. Didn't even make good old fashioneds, which is difficult lol. Glad there's something for everyone
Cardboard and rubbing alcohol. That's pretty much what this stuff tastes like. Jack Daniels and pretty much any decent bourbon are way better than this stuff.
@@stuffandwhiskey Given the fact I'm primarily a Jack and Bourbon drinker, it may be a matter of acquiring a taste for something that's a bit different. I am 100 percent finishing that bottle, though. It's possible my taste for rye whiskey may adjust along the way.
Bulleit rye was the first whisky I really liked. I have moved on but every time I have I still like it. Right now I’m really enjoying all thing Wild Turkey.
I’m a Bulliet Rye guy! Love it. Love G Shock watches too! All I ever had for 30 + years! Great choice on both! ✌🏼🥃
Bulliet Rye is my go to for an old fashioned. It makes the best I’ve had.

My favorite rye.
Great start to a series! I would reach for Old Forrester Rye 100 before this due to it being slightly sweeter, more proof, and cheaper. Cheers!
That's a very fair point, and OF100 is one we'll have to revisit at some point as well.

This is a great starter rye. I'm getting a significant Anise/ black licorice taste
I’m liking this style of series. It’s good to go in the way back machine for fun.
I'm looking forward to this series! Great classic bottle. I'm always surprised how tame the mint/grass notes are given the high percentage of rye. Cheers!
I have a brand new unopened bottle of Bulleit Rye that I got to try. I've had a rye by Leadslingers. Love your channel and content 🥃

It's a great holiday whiskey to be sure!
