I love this rye because it doesn’t taste like bourbon. Spicy without being harsh. Super smooth. Can you recommend something similar without blowing the budget?
American whiskey is not my main field of knowledge. There are so many I haven't even heard of. Redemption Rye is OK and even the Wild Turkey Rye is passable. And never forget the good old standard Canadian Club!
If you can find George Dickel’s Rye, it’s basically the same whiskey but it has been maple-sugar charcoal filtered (Lincoln county process). There's also the Sazerac Rye I've seen recommended many times.
Thanks! I'm glad that I ordered this whiskey, cuz I never had Rye, and wanted to compare it to the standard Bulleit Bourbon. Our liquer store didn't have it on the shelf.
This whiskey stunned me when I first tasted it. It is certainly on the budget end as regards price, but right up there as for flavour. Thanks for the feedback.
Ayyye cheers from the States. We drank rye back in the day because rye grows twice as fast as corn and wheat and we can run twice the liquor in a single season. The taste was a lovely bonus to the copious alcohol consumption lol.
How interesting. I had never considered that growing seasons had much to do with it. I remember well that the best whiskey I tasted in the USA was a Willett Rye in a little bar in Washington DC. Haven't seen it here in Tasmania, but I do keep looking! Thanks for the comment!
Just tried this for the first time this weekend and am absolutely stunned by the complexity, high ABV and difference from my usual Scotch and bourbon experience at such a low price here in Australia! (WA). Its so good!
I would agree my Brother down under. I recently had Redemption 95% rye. I was told it's better then Bulleit 95% rye. It was the store advisor that recommended the Redemption. I will be telling him the next time I see him, Bulleit is way better. I couldn't have done a better review, good taste buds.
@@NivlasNightcapNotes nah, I appreciated your review....., it was a compliment to you. My apologies if it sounded " off ". Yes, I got my first bottle of this, ....amazing to say the least. Happy new year to you Sir.
And a happy new year to you. I was not at all offended by your accent comment. I have been to the states twice now and people appreciated my Australian twang, but also that we could understand each other so easily. Keep researching those whiskies!
Bulliet Rye is my house Whiskey. I've always got it on hand and you're correct. The price is very low for the quality. It's also consistent from bottle to bottle.
Thanks for your comment. My channel "Good Libations" has been going for nearly 2 years and I have done just over 70 reviews. I find it good fun and like sharing my passion for good booze, especially whisky (or whiskey). I hope you watch some of my other stuff.
I bought this a few weeks ago on your recommendation and was stunned at how good it was. I've never had rye whisky before. I'm gonna try Rittenhouse Rye next and see how that compares. Cheers!
Glad you liked it. Be a bit wary of the Rittenhouse. I had a nip when out at dinner and I hadn't realised how high the %age was and had to use a lot of water to calm it down. Try it at a bar first if you can. I do like rye. I think the best one I have tasted is a Willett Rye from the US. Thanks for the comment.
The "hug" as you call it is taken for granted! I remember the guy who took a tutored tasting at Woodford Reserve when I visited there in 2016 said (please imagine a broad Southern accent) "The first sip will have a bit of prickle, but the second sip should warm you up!"
Wondering how this compares to regular Bulleit Frontier. I tried Bulleit Frontier for the first time recently. It's very sweet (the aftertaste was sweet like syrup).
I guess that sweetness is the nature of American whiskeys as they get put in American Oak barrels which give them that vanilla type finish, even the ones made of rye. Of course bourbon, being made mostly from corn is always going to be on the sweeter spectrum.
Thank you for the heads up. I was definitely going to go there if we were going back to the states, but I might find a better opportunity somewhere else.
You are very lucky! From my couple of visits to the States I was blown away by how cheap your whiskeys are to what we have to pay for them here in Australia. Keep tasting!
Probably. But the percentage would be quite low. I would imagine the rulings would be similar. To be called bourbon, over 50% has to be corn mash. So the same might be for rye. Now there is a topic for research!
Indiana most likely means it was distilled at MGP. A major bulk distiller. They supply a lot of manufacturers. They have an endless amount of mash bills and if you are big enough you can contract them to make your own mash bill. It's how a lot of young distilleries get up and going without having to wait for long maturation. They can supply new make and some semi matured whiskeys 95% Rye 5% Barley introduced in 2011 - distilled at MGP Indiana en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulleit_Bourbon
This bottle is a good gateway to rye whiskey.
I agree. And a very handy gateway it is!

Templeton 4yr Rye is the best one ive tried so far. Old Forester Rye is also quite good for the price
Thanks!

You nailed it with the Apple peel description.
It's like literally the smell of stewed apples with nutmeg.

Damn right it is smooth! And full of flavour. A very handy whiskey at a very handy price. Cheers

Good to hear your positive comment. Where abouts in WA? I was born in Narembeen in the wheat belt. Lived in Tasmania since I was 11.
@@NivlasNightcapNotes Im in Fremantle. Lots of great bars and a growing whisky appreciation culture evolving here.

Nice 👍 mate, recently tried one of your Tasmanian Whiskies, Nant with a Port finish, very nice 👍.
Keep the nightcaps coming,I really enjoy.
Yes, there are a few Tasmanian distilleries around, and Nant is one of the more well known ones. Thank you for watching!
I bought it today, It reminds me eating smokey chicken wings with your favourite spicy sauce. Long lasting burnt peppery taste. Strong but enjoyable..
Glad you enjoyed it. It is a great whiskey. And not very expensive!
Always trust a wise man with an accent, when it comes to reviewing a rye whiskey 👍👍👍👍
Perhaps not the expected accent to review an American whisky. This stuff is really good value!

My first American Rye ! I received a bottle this Christmas, good stuff !
Whoever gave you a bottle of this for Christmas needs to be thanked very sincerely.
@@NivlasNightcapNotes haha I agree ! It was my mother-in-law actually.
Must mention it to my Mother In Law and see if she can be as generous!!

Thank you for your kind comment. Plenty out there where this came from.

i like it and think it’s good for the price. I’m glad you said dark chocolate because i thought it seemed strange
I was stunned at how good this whiskey is! Also the very handy pricing helps. Keep tasting!
Everything you say is true, but you forgot what we call the "Hug," that warm burning sensation going down. :)

The ‘’regular’’ Bulleit is a bourbon so yeah it’s gonna be sweeter than the Rye, which is spicier and drier because of the rye grain itself
I like this review and I like this Rye. Cheers
It is amazing value! Even here in Australia it is under $60. Thanks for the comment.
Lawrenceburg, In is 30 minutes from Cincinnati. Don t bother no tours or gift shop.

My store was out of glen so i tried my first bottle of bulleit
I hope you found the Bulleit worth the effort. For the price it is a really good whiskey.
now it's your fault that I am going to open that bottle I have still unopened ;)
No use having bottles of good booze and not drinking the contents. Just take little tastes and the bottle will last for some time (at least 24 hours)!
I've been enjoying my 750ml bottle.
IS THERE CORN IN THIS?

Nooooooo!!!! It’s made in Kentucky not Indiana!!!!🤢🤢🤢
Check the label very carefully!
Definitely says on the bottle, made in Indiana!

If I make it back to Indiana to visit my family I am definitely going to visit this distillery! Covid has prevented that from happening.
It’s distilled in Indiana. It says so on the back of the label
