New to the channel, I was always fascinated with electronic when I had a work colleague who was a ex TV repair engineer working in the security industry, he literally pulled a small bag out, removed the cover from the CCTV keyboard, commenced chopping and soldering and in next to no time, system all back up and running. (D.H) Great videos you make it look so simple 👍

The lack of ferrite beads may have contributed to some high frequency oscillation but I've not known them to cause such a rapid breakdown, more likely a fake FET (but then dim bulbs interact strangely with some PFC designs). As you say, would be worth checking the driver chip, resistor etc and refitting the PFC parts (with beads) to see if that part was working. Those pesky E01 resistors (marked as 103 in the Australian variant, ho, ho).

Since you have the component tester if you have more of those dubious transistors you can test them to see if they are at least FETs and not bipolar transistors or something else.
Also I see comments about an incorrect package, but Infineon made the 6R199P both with metal tab (PG-TO220-3-1) like the spare and isolated (PG-TO220 FullPAK) like the original so you can get genuine ones in both packages. Both say PG-TO220 in the datasheet summary but the drawing at the end of the datasheet shows the actual packaging.
Anyway on the genuine Infineon logo there is an "i" and the dot of the "i" can be a solid circle or a just a circle, but that one seems to have a "V" or a check mark instead of an "i", maybe it's some Chinese character, it must be in the top 10 of the worst fakes 🤦‍♂
There are a lot TO-220 variants and Infineon uses at least 14 for 3-pin components:
    PG-TO220-3-1
    PG-TO220-3-31
    PG-TO220-3-111
    PG-TO220-3-123
    PG-TO220-3-253
    PG-TO220-3-312
    PG-TO220-3-313
    PG-TO220-3-317
    PG-TO220-3-321
    PG-TO220-3-322
    PG-TO220-3-901
    PG-TO220-3-904
    PG-TO220-3-908
    PG-TO220-3-909
They make or made the 6R199P at least in:
    PG-TO220 FullPAK with part # IPA60R199CP
    PG-TO220-3-1/TO220-3-2 with part # IPP60R199CP
    PG-TO247-3 with part # IPW60R199CP
    PG-TO262 with part # IPI60R199CP
    PG-TO263 with part # IPB60R199CP
By the way PG means "Plastic Green" = plastic without halogens

The logo on the transistor is Infineon. The replacement was probably a fake, that only withstood the boosted voltage for a second. The logo on the fake one is deffinitely an attempt at imitating the original, but it can't be the same.

Looks like an opportunity to crack open the package of blown devices to compare the die size. It is very interesting what you've got from aliexpress and how it matches with the old device. Especially since you have a microscope, it wouldn't be so hard to inspect the die size. Just heat the device as much as you can (500C or higher) and then plastic top comes off with ease.
My bet is that the replacement transistor was originally rated for significantly lower voltages or just could be a completely different type of transistor. That's why it lets the smoke out.

I have been done by Chinese Junk many times, including fake graphic cards. I think that is why it is called Ali Express - get rid of it as quick as possible to another victim.

@@sherlockholmes1121 I don't know why we keep buying this chinese crap! its useless, buy the original part from a reputable source and be done with it!

That’s what I was suspicious of. Buying from Ali Express for customer repairs seems like plying with fire in a dry evergreen forest. Things are bound to blow up. Ali Express is fine if you have made jigs to test components up to their ratings. I’ve got a couple PSUs I copied onto a less dense PCB and added sockets (expensive, sadly) to let me test parts in circuit and change them out easily. No fake mosfet lives long when loaded up properly at high line voltage :) In that respect I follow Mr.Carlson’s advice: functional tests are best. Just don’t do them in what you’re trying to fix.
I’m pretty sure the transistor is definitely a fake.

  • @Sydney268
    @Sydney268 Рік тому +6

Fake components on aliexpress? Never! Seriously tho I'm always amazed by your faith in aliexpress components, seems to be your goto supplier. For other people its mouser, digikey hell even lcsc, then aliexpress as an absolute last resort(and by which time you know it's gonna be fake/reject/used/etc if you can't get it elsewhere)

27:10 I never thought that those rings/ beads are really that important. I thought that is it only for an additional safety reasons (not required for normal operation).
Thank you that you pointed it out - to never forget to apply those rings back to new transistor.

The transistor is surely a dodgy knock-off. Here're the evidences and clues:
    1. the very top layer of plastic packaging with the original markings was simply grinded off. The original surface is expected to be very smooth almost like having a glaze coating due to the way the plastic case is manufactured.
    2. the marking uses a different font type which looks like Arial MT. Every reputable manufacturer use its own custom font, not just a font type that most likely bundled with a typical MicroSoft Office software package.
    3. the quality of the laser engraving itself and how deeper the etching was done. The edges and how the whole picture is done. Most likely you'll see a dot/pixel patterns/arrangements that would tell that the cheap hobby-grade laser engraver was used.
Also please be extra cautious. The exploded device package pieces that fly into the air are extremely dangerous as they always have razor sharp edges. Please take care.

Try rubbing some acetone with a cotton swab over the printing on the suspect mosfet. If it starts coming off black it's a good indication that the original part number has been sanded off and it's been re-coated and relabeled as something different than it actually is (though some fake parts don't always swab black, so it's not a perfect test, but an awful lot will, and genuine parts never do).

    • @absurdengineering
      @absurdengineering Рік тому

I don’t think there’s any question the replacement mosfet was fake. It looks 100% wrong. Doesn’t even need to be repainted - the marking is just not right in any respect. Is screams cheap, and the original doesn’t.
