While I of course appreciate the Red Dwarf reference, Crichton makes me think of Farscape instead

The Admirable Crichton was turned into a movie long before the fifties. It was first made in the UK in 1918 and then in 1919 Cecil B. Demille shot a completely overwrought version called “Male and Female”. I first read about it in a piece by S. J. Perelman (who will repay your closer attention) but the movie is wild. I also like things I found on the Wikipedia page like that the movie was retitled because admirable sounds too much like admiral and “sea stories don’t do very well”. In the cast list there is a lion called Slats.
Recommendation: Cloudland Revisited by S. J. Perelman, a compilation of his rewatching or rereading movies and books from his youth most of which leave something to be desired.

Sebastian is the eponymous butler in the anime Black Butler which I don’t really know about. Actually he is named after a dog, which makes sense as there’s a very foundational anime based on the story Belle and Sebastian. Interestingly, perhaps only to me, the butler in P.G. Wodehouse’s Blandings Castle stories is called Sebastian Beach, but is almost always referred to by his surname. Jeeves is not a butler.
