  • LS500 One Month Ownership Update
    I’ve noticed that although there are a lot of Lexus LS500 review videos there aren’t many actual long-term review videos. So, I want to tell you about my real-world experience with the car after owning it for just over one month.
    I can say that I find the fancy 28 way adjustable seats way more comfortable than the Teslas I’ve had in the past, and I use the lumbar massage feature pretty much every time.
    I do appreciate having the level of adjustability in getting that seat just how I like it, even though I rarely actually adjust it much anymore.
    Given that the centre screen is not a touchscreen, just how annoying is it having to use the touch pad on the console below?
    People expect to just tap on a screen - what they want to do. Your phone, your tablet, etc.
    I see Lexus has kind of fixed this issue in a newer redesigned model, they also allow you to touch the screen. I expect them to do that for all models as they are redesigned.
    How hard is it to navigate the center screen controls while driving?
    So, this is really similar to the Tesla where you’re not interacting a whole bunch with the screen while driving. You use it to change some settings and if you have a lot of things to browse through or change, you’d normally do it while stopped, for example like setting up the seat just how you like.
    In fact, I interact less with that touchpad and screen while driving because the Lexus uses some physical buttons & controls for things like the heating / air conditioning and radio.
    Well we have had that weather recently where it’s below freezing at night and then sometimes above freezing during the day so I do need to have the heated steering wheel & seat on at times. One thing I really like about the LS500 is that it has an automatic setting for both of those things so the car turns the heaters on if it’s cold inside the car and off when it’s warmed up.
    This car has a 23 speaker Mark Levinson audio system with speakers seemingly everywhere, even in 4 places in the headliner. I have to say that this sound system is the best sound system I’ve ever had in a vehicle.
    I find the heads-up display useful and I use it all the time. I especially like that it puts the speed up there and things like cross traffic alert notifications.
    So, I’ve always liked the #Lexus LS lineup but honestly the previous generations of the car were somewhat bland inside and out. The #LS500 I have is the first LS model that absolutely wowed me in terms of design and style everywhere.
    You may have noticed on some other Lexus models that they put their signature spindle grille look on the front but it doesn’t look like the vehicle was designed with it in mind. With the LS500 I think everything works together fantastically. I especially like the grille, headlights and tail lights.
    So, my car is obviously white, the colour is called Eminent White Pearl. If I was buying a new LS500 I’d either go for this pearl white or the Manganese Luster, it’s kind of a grey pearl metallic.
    The LS500 is the top of the line luxury sedan in the Lexus lineup and for comfort and smoothness the LS does not disappoint. For overall regular driving this car is really awesome. I particularly like just how smooth the ride is.
    If you read or watch some reviews of the LS500’s ride, some people complain about the ride being harsher than the previous generation LS. Many people blame that on the factory run-flat tires, which is true. On this car, the previous owner replaced the run-flat tires with non-run-flat tires so I have no complaints about the smoothness of the ride.
    Overall, I think the car is fantastic and has nearly everything I would like. In the ideal world I would like for this to be a plugin hybrid car. Lexus does not offer a plugin hybrid version but they do offer a hybrid model, although it’s quite expensive.
    Another thing I would like is if the gas engine shut off instead of idling at red lights and drive thru-s and such. To get that you need the hybrid version.
    My driving requirements have changed over the last number of years and now I’m more interested in plugin hybrids over full electrics for my particular situation. I had a plugin Prius back in 2012-2015 before buying my first Tesla, that car had a very short EV range or I maybe would have kept it longer.
    First, I sometimes smell coolant when I get out of the car after driving.
    Second, the car doesn’t seem to be sitting level when I look at it from the rear, I believe the air suspension needs to be recalibrated.
    And thirdly, if I press the brake pedal down too hard it will make a slight squeak noise from the firewall area.
    What I was looking for was a more reliable car with more luxury features with better customer service and support compared to what I had with Tesla, and I got that. When I compare this car’s value to that of other luxury brands such as Audi and Mercedes they would have cost more and had more questionable reliability in the long run.

      We own two Lexus’ and LOVE them. I just watch a UA-cam segment on a 2015 Tesla model S - for 30 minutes the guy went on and on about everything that has broken in the 60,000 miles - door-handle, the hinge on back seat arm rest broke 3 times and he gave up, chrome pieces, quite a few rubber door gaskets, the list was extensive including leather on steering wheel. I see nothing luxury about a Tesla!,

    Great video, just couple of points I want to make:
    - It actually costs more to put physical buttons than the touch screen.
    -Second, stop and start engine may give you little better fuel economy but, it will put more wear/tear on your engine and its very annoying most people usually turn this feature off.

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  4 роки тому +9

      @@PMGR7796 The quality of the 2019 LS is impeccable on the inside the prior generation interior wasn't as good. As for the touch pad no problem I guess because I was use to to mouse pad. I wish there was more space in the back. I have the Luxuary model everything but the message backseats. My only complaint is no Android Auto. Fuel economy in ECO highway driving at 76 mph is 31.5 miles per gallon not bad for a 2 ton vehicle. City driving 18.8 to 20.0 ECO. Normal about 18.5 to about 20. If you do spirited driving not so good 14 to 16.5. I find that normal is just as quick as sport plus with out the enhanced steering. Everything works every time no hiccups.

I fell in love with the LS500 in 2018 when I was originally going in to test a GSF and loved the redesign and the twin turbo V6 which has better fuel economy than a V8 but with V8 power delivery. I will likely still get a fast car as a weekender just to get my kicks at the track (I miss racing at NHRA 1/4 mile drags). I feel being in my 30s with all these injuries that comfort would appeal more to me than neck jerking.

I mean it will all come down to next year when we finalize our house and then I can car shop (our current high rise has no place for an EV to top off while I’m home without someone messing with the car).

    Great video 👍. I thoroughly enjoyed your honest and unbiased feedback about your experience.
    I hope to get my own one day spec'd out exactly how yours is. Eminent White Pearl with the White Semi-Aniline Leather and the Executive Package. I really like the Panoramic Moon-roof and how Lexus made the entire roof black. Just adds a bit more luxury to this flagship.

    Not sure this is the place to vent but my bud that works for Lexus of Orlando told me to keep my 17 LS460L and forget about the LS500 and wait two years for the new redesign. The LS500 is not as luxurious and Lexus has cut corners and cheaped out on many things that make the 460 a better car. Mostly more expensive build quality, V8 and more refined. Any one have both that can offer a first-hand opinion? The 500 colors are mostly fugly too, that purple brown all over gets old quick. Thanks, Bob in Vero, 25 year LS owner.

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  3 роки тому +1

      This is the right place to vent, Bob! I haven't driven a previous LS but I can say I'm sure the V8 would have smoother power delivery. As for more refined, I'm not sure. The biggest complaint seems to be with the run-flat tires on the 500, which mine were replaced with regular tires. I'm happy with the ride. I feel that the interior is "next level" better in so many ways over the previous LS's more simple interiors. I'm not real tall but headroom can be a factor depending on your seating position, compared to the older LS's. I'm very happy with quality and luxury of this car, no complaints at all there. The large luxury sedan market is completely dying out, everyone wants SUVs these days. I still appreciate my LS500 every time I drive it. It is a great car, but every car has some pros & cons. Fortunately for '21 they put in a touchscreen which would be my biggest complaint for the interior. Now that Lexus is bringing back the V8 in the IS maybe they will bring it back for the LS in 2022?? Who knows but we'll see.

    I've had both Tesla is fun (model S) and actually more comfortable than the LS500. I'm 6'2 and it's shocking how tight the Lexus feels. The LS interior is much nicer to look at tho. But, the fact the LS has no remote smart or touchscreen is baffling. The touch pad was a terrible idea. In, the end i believe the Lexus will be a better value overtime.

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  3 роки тому +1

      Oh man Teslas are lots of fun. It is true the headroom is not like the old LS, I can say I'm 5'7" so not a big deal to me. With that said I find the seat comfort overall is better on the Lexus however the seat cushioning is softer on the Tesla. I think it also depends on the year because the 2018 Model S I had was a tight fitting seat whereas the seat in my 2015 Model S was flatter and more comfortable in comparison. Yes, the touchpad was a mistake. They used to have a touchscreen in the LS, then went to touch-pad, and realized they are dumb and in 2021 they went back to touchscreen. I just uploaded a one year + update video last week, check it out. I believe once older Teslas are out of warranty they will depreciate like an anchor, like an old Mercedes. Battery replacements are $20K range so that will essentially total the cars when they are older. Tesla does not care about long time customers, only getting fresh blood in the door.

      I believe the LS500 target age is in the 50's or 60's but yeah it is an old man car LOL!! I like big boat sedans though, Town Cars, Crown Vics, etc. I had a 2006 Jaguar XJR for about 2 years before this and really liked it, the extremely great build quality, the craftsmanship and premium appointments everywhere. There is a huge difference between a more expensive premium car and a cheaper car. Admittedly I'm in my 40's though... I would not buy another Tesla, not for a few years. They need to fix a lot of things with the company. Stay away from the Model Y for at least a year, they still have a lot of build quality issues and they need to "work the bugs out" of this new model. I got rid of my first Tesla for many reasons: 1. difficult to get service; 2. things needing repair seemingly ongoing; 3. company policies change which hurt me as an owner; 4. downgrading my car's charging speed after about 4 years through a software update; 5. lies for years about when they would expand service here with things like supercharging, support, etc. I know Tesla is an aspirational, hot brand. I drove two Prius for 7 years before buying my first Tesla and let me tell you Tesla is good at the "EV" parts but notsomuch with the other things (customer support, build quality, etc.). So good electric motors & circuit boards. I would not recommend Tesla at the moment, they still need to mature as a company. However if you really want a Tesla, the 3 is the most reliable model at the moment (ha!), and you should live close-ish to a service centre for best results. You may wish to watch my "5 years of endless Tesla problems" video to get a feel for what Tesla ownership could be like. My only regret was not getting rid of my Model S sooner. I do have another Model S but I rarely drive it anymore after buying the amazing LS500.

      @@InternetDude I must admit I love big old American style care, growing up I was anxious to get older to drive a Lincoln, but I'm driving a Lexus which is really better now. I do like the Genesis G90 and even the new Lincoln. but lately im interested in the Tesla for my geek side, its just the minimalism of Tesla is a major setback in my mind, I love luxury feels and button Porsche style. why did you leave Tesla is my question

      I like Genesis, who knows I may get one some day. They are doing a lot of things right. As for the Tesla geek side, I understand. I actually prefer something between the Tesla (no buttons) and loads of buttons. My Lexus is just about right.

    Great car mate, but for this price point why wouldnt you get the lexus lc500? Is it comfort, gas milage?

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  4 роки тому +1

      I really didn't consider the LC, it's a pretty flashy car and even rarer than the LS. I still have a loaded up Tesla P100D if I want to go fast anyway. The LS is a daily driver, I feel like the LC would be a summer car only. I already have one of those (not the Tesla).

    Fun Fact: The “500” in LS500 is a subtle nod to how much dollars it costs you at the gas station!

    The most thing I hate is oil change! Why not go for taycan or Mercedes ev?

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  3 роки тому +2

      Oh I used to think oil changes were bad, until I realized that with a gas car I need one oil change per year and with a Tesla I need 4-8 repairs per year. Suddenly an oil change seems minor in the grand scheme of things. Porsche dealer too far away from me and I think the Taycan is overpriced for what you get so they're out. I am warming up to the idea of a Mercedes, albeit they have reliability issues just like Tesla. I truly think the future for me is a plugin hybrid for the next few years. Full EV for most day-to-day driving and then gas for the road trips. There are basically no compromises that way.

      Mine is a 2018 so I let the first guy take a good chunk of depreciation (approx $31K I think). Yeah I’ll take a good hit too over 2 more years but hopefully not as bad... yes will be an awesome deal in another couple of years.

    Please don't compare it with the Tesla as much because they are completeley different classes of cars. I know its best to compare it with a car you have actually driven but it's obvious which car will be better.

    Update: I found a local deal on a 19 LS 500 with 15,025 miles in perfect shape and... score! $66,000, sold my 17 LS 460 with 25,500 miles for $42,000 and in love again! Window sticker says just under $94,000 incl. Panaramic Roof and 20" chrome wheels, most every option except 4WD, Exec Pkg. and goofy hybrid. Car flies and 23 speaker Mark Levinson Reference (?) sound system better than my ears can hear. Black leather, wood trim and oh what fun. Go for it, if you can find one! Read that they are slow sellers so not making many and hard to find around SoFlo. Oh yeah, Tesla Plaid sounds oh so cool two but at more than double the price think I'll wait plus Teslas are starting to look like old Dodges now. LS 500 much faster than LS 460 and sport plus mode with traction control off and ten-speed auto with paddle shifters a blast even though Tesla does go the fastest, I breeze past the charging ports. The massage function is a hoot, too.

    It just seems to me that the Lexus and regular branded products from Toyota are all too similar now and the "luxury" quotient is now blurred. We've owned up to three different styles at one time, but now moved back to S Class Mercedes.

    • @InternetDude

      All cars across the board have improved in quality and features. The LS stands out from Toyota to me: air suspension, massage seats, etc. I’m too scared to own a Mercedes, out of warranty for sure 😉
