2023 Lexus LS500h : How is the Model That Launched Lexus Doing in 2023

- A Mechanic reviews the 2023 Lexus LS500h to see how is it doing in 2023. The Lexus LS launched Lexus into the world but with an ever changing world of cars and the general heading towards SUVs. Is this flagship sedan that once was the greatest Lexus to buy still good in 2023?
In this video we do a full technical review of the 2023 Lexus LS500h. We talk about some the engine, the transmission and the hybrid system.
Then we take a look underneath it. A look inside and outside. Some things I don't like about it then finally is this still the flagship sedan that launched Lexus into the world? or is it a fading memory of the past?

us toyota/lexus owners are so lucky to have these in depth videos from you, keep up the great work!
I am a proud owner of a 1994 LS400. I have never driven any new model LS but it was disheartening to hear that Lexus no longer has interest in going back to their roots with at least one model.. Times change and the business must adapt. I guess the original LS really is something special.
I own a first gen LS too and I have driven the latest generation LS 500h and drove home in my trusty old LS. The old one is so much smoother and quiet. I would never trade it against a fifth gen.
Damn correct. LS400 = 1968 Cadillac. Both Real Cars !!!
Toyota Century...
2001 LS430..
2004 LS430 plz
We have owned several Lexus cars over the years. 2 LS400s 2 IS300s 2 IS250s 1 CT200h 1 ES300h currently a 2005 LS430 and a 2004 GX470. The LS430 to me is the best car ever built and the 2019 ES300h was an amazing vehicle 50mpg and very good comfort and space. You could hide 2 bodies in the trunk. Why they didn't carry that over to the LS I don't know. I have also worked for Lexus for over 30 years and while things aren't like they used to be I still believe Lexus makes the best cars in the world!
Yes the LS430 is my daily driver. Fantastic car.
LS430 is one of the best cars ever built by lexus
I think it was said best, the new LS is really a luxurious GS. Viewed from that perspective the new LS makes sense.
I heard from several mechanics and consumers that the LS430 is the best vehicle in the world when it comes to quality and reliability.
@@christofonobrown3659 interesting perspective
Love my LS500. Makes me smile every time I drive it. Kids like auto cooled seats in the rear.
how's owning the care been so far? have you noticed the leather seats getting old and loose with wear and tear? and what about the boot space? how many miles are on the clock and what MPG are you getting? have you come across any issues? many people complained about the engine noise due to the CVT and how the gearbox just protests when you want extra speed. what about the wind noise at high speeds?
I would rather have a 2017 LS 460. It’s smooth, quiet and has that buttery smooth 4.6 liter v-8.
same. this is what I plan on buying in a couple years
As a previous owner of a Ls460. It is smooth but noisy because of Direct injection. Also engine bay is packed tightly with a lot of pricey repairs if they happen to fail. One of them is the Abs unit
@@jonathanmccully5678I had a GS460 with that same engine and transmission and it was extremely reliable, sold it with 240k, better than the 4th Gen GS I replaced it with
2016-2017 the best LS-460
@@ahihoodgavriel2844 my understanding was the 13 and up were much improved over the early ones. I have a 14 F Sport I bought about a year ago and it's been great so far (knock on wood).
Proud Lexus owner here! and I can say that nothing beats the quality build and long term performance of my 2005 ES330!!! Amazing
agreed… I’m on 210K miles with mine and still going strong!
I bought my ES 300 here in Australia on auction (online) without going to check the car. I have had it for 2 years with 130,000kms and there’s no issues with it. Great car and drives like a dream. My next car would definitely be the LS model ❤
es330 is a Gibson guitar 🤔
@@opokuagyemangministries 130km is great with no issues, but for longevity Im sure you will get much more. I bought a used Pathfinder with ~380,000 km on it, original engine. I drove it until it had just over half a million km on it before the engine finally gave out. She finds paths no more 😢but I barely did anything in those 200k km. Oil changes and brakes, and had to replace the flex bar, that's it.
but 130km with no issues since is actually pretty good come to think of it.
Just a suggestion, It would be nice if you can add a driving section so we can hear the cabin noise and your option of the drive while driving.
Das Beste Auto der Welt.Lexus ist in allen Fahrzeugklassen der Maßstab.Superlative in jeder Hinsicht
Having driven both, I think I'm gonna stick with my LS600hL. I can't justify losing the V8 & buttery smoothness that is lacking from the 8GR-FXS
3rd Lexus - 2017 Lexus LS 460 - last of the V8s I love this car.
I am addicted to your channel and car reviews. I still love my 2013 Lexus RX 350, such a super reliable vehicle as you have said many times. Wish I was closer to you, I’d be there in a heartbeat for service. Keep up the great work!
The Lexus LS typically caters to an older age demographic. I recently purchased my second LS (2022), and age 48 I truly believe I was the youngest customer in the dealership. The average LS buyer loves the vehicles simplistic interior and somewhat basic functionality. LS purchasers remain loyal to this sedan for its reliability, comfort & smooth ride. Not an abundance of personal settings, multiple infotainment features or niche gadget's (I haven't viewed/changed my LS's settings since the first week of purchase.)
Although I miss the V8, the twin turbo V6 has surprisingly quick acceleration and to me most importantly is quiet.
This is true, my 89 yr old grandfather has had various LS models for over 20 years.
@@japanwatchconnection I didn't know you wrote the rules of demographic bought cars. It's not a old man's car....but alot buy them because they are the only ones who can afford them.
@@japanwatchconnection Although I'll miss the V8, the new power-train hasn't been a disappointment for me. I would like to see sleeker exterior lines should this flagship sedan make it another generation. But with so many automakers/buyers choosing SUV's and crossovers who knows if this classic beauty will make it other generation.
It's appeal to older folks is because they've bought cars over the years and have realized that when you purchase something that significantly depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot, you want something that is reliable. Only younger folks buy the cars that are pretty and shiny with all the bells and whistles is because they haven't had years of wisdom and experience of dealing with the maintenance on a depreciating product. Older folks know Lexus is a luxurious vehicle that they can drive for a decade with minimal issues. You're not getting that with a Land Rover or a German car.
I just bought one and I’m 39. But it’s true that I had 19 cars in my life… and exactly I iterated through 2 S classes and 1 BMW 7 to LC500 and from LC500 to LS. What I realized is that LC has V8 but I don’t drive fast anyway.. so rather than that I got Lexus LS (new one) hybrid and I plan to keep it for at least 5 or 6 years.
I love how you keep it honest with your reviews. Your integrity keeps me coming back to your channel as a Toyota owner. It is sort of sad to see the LS not being the wow car it was when I was a kid in the early 90's. I remember even then wanting a LS, ES or even Cressida because they were "fancy" and exclusive. It is still a beautiful car but who knows how much longer it will be produced.
Siempre gracias por todo muchacho🙌🏼🙌🏼
All I can say we are blessed to have you on you tube. I have been a watcher and sub for quite a while now. Your wisdom and knowledge about Toyota Lexus is unbelievable. Your unbiased and detailed videos are amazing. Don't stop making long detailed videos. I own two Lexus myself. RX 450h and a Lexus is 300. Love them both. I do all my own maintenance and repairs since I used to be a master tech and have been wrenching since I was 10. Your videos have helped to keep me up to date on tech these days. Best tech on Toyota on UA-cam bar none. Keep them coming.

Great review! First time ever seeing your videos pop up, but I'm extremely glad they did. Very, very informative, you got yourself a new subscriber!
Love your fantastic in depth Videos. Love the reliability and technology of Toyota and Lexus. I’ve got cars in UK, NZ and Australia and I’m moving all over to be Lexus now.
What a explanation 👏
Simple and perfect.
Thank you
Thank you AMD for an honest review of this model. We appreciate your honesty 😎😎👍👍
As the former owner of previous generations of the LS going back decades, I can attest to the truth of the Car Care Nut's complaints about the current generation. I won't have this car because of how Lexus has ruined their former flagship. From the disappointing powertrain to the attempts to make it "sporty", this generation cannot compare to its predecessors. It saddens me that I have to shop elsewhere..
Enjoy the BMW or MB as long as there is a warranty.

That was the Very Best review of a vehicle (any vehicle) that I've ever seen. Professional, impartial and to the point. Stellar in a cyberspace full of black hole biased moto journalist infomercials.
Great video & indepth info on this! I have a LC 500h and would love to see you review one of those.

@@Car_carenut what’s the surprise
2019 LS owner with 16k miles and still love it for the open road. Will update to 2024 or LC conv.
Good explanation. Don't like that Lexus and Toyota share so much. Makes Lexus seem downgraded.
But that’s exactly why they’re reliable. It’s better to share parts with the most reliable brand historically compared to a Genesis sharing with Hyundai/Kia.
Absolutely can’t stop staring at that lovely LX in the back
Best Luxury flagship sedan in the world. THANK YOU TOYOTA CORPORATION!
@@japanwatchconnection Get away peasant!
LS 400 was and will always be one of my favourite cars. We owned 3 at one time and it just felt timeless. It is disheartening to hear that LS is being discontinued but it makes sense given how little sales it makes every year comparing to other competitors in the same class
My parents sold me their 2004 ES330 when they bought a 2014 ES350. They’ve said they wish they had just kept the 2004, because of its softer ride.
So true. Had a 2002 es300, it drove like a dream.
I love my 2005 LS 430. Unreal car. All the newer LS models look like other cars on he road
No they don’t
As owner of an ‘02 LS430 and a ‘20 LS500, I can understand some of the criticisms, but do find the LS500 to be a much better handler than the LS430. As for smoothness and ride, run flat tires are the culprit. You can always swap them for conventional tires as some owners have done.
In all we are very satisfied with our LS500. Our LS430 lacks most of the safety features of the LS500 and that is where the current model excels.
Power is another area where the LS500 dominates. 442 lb. Ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm is incredible. The 500 is a very fast car.
We opted not to get the hybrid model. It is down on power, too expensive, and most of all has a ridiculously complicated transmission. Actually it has TWO transmissions.
Do you know what package of your LS 430 you have?
Outstanding review! I really enjoy your common sense approach to cars, please keep up the great work.
A very fair review. Even Lexus couldn't critique that. Well done.
AMD, I suppose this is what you are forced buy if you can't find a nice 2001 LS with just 628,000 miles on it. 😉🤣 Going forward, lets hope engineers and designers remember that COMFORT is king when it comes to flagship luxury sedans. 😁
Hey right lane. Don't answer that post, ITS FAKE!
@@riceburner4747 Thanks, I have already reported it.
I saw an LS500 last month with that exact cream interior and USB colour damn it still looks good.
I love your contents.
All this technical information is so eye opening and informative, thank you AMD. Is this a car where the person who makes the decision to purchase it, reside in the back seat ? I rather have this that the German equivalent. Thank you all at TCCN TV.
I have a 2018 LS500. Such a beauty
I agree with you, LS is fading away in Toyota/Lexus's future growing plan!
AMD the day will come when these come rolling into your shop. Study them well💕
Currently have an NX450h+ and love it!
Interested in an LS(for a second vehicle)so to get a feel for them I test drove a 2012 LS460 with 178,000 miles and it was as tight and solid as the day it left Japan! Amazingly smooth and serene. My salesman and the sales manager told me the new ones are nothing like the older ones. People who trade up to a new one want their older ones back. It’s sad Lexus is going backwards with their flagship. It started everything and now there is no more of the “relentless pursuit of perfection” for the LS😢.
Against the competition the LS is barely mid-pack. The older ones are definitely something special.
Great Review! If I am not mistaken, I believe those 5 radar sensors are for the Lexus Team Mate system. The system is Toyota’s interpretation of GM’s super cruise.
i do love my 1999 ls 400, 114,500 miles. i watch all of your videos because you inform everyone about cars. thanks. p.s my other car is a 1987 pontiac fiero gt and i am the mechanic. cars do make you think. i know how to read the blinks. no codes lately

I have a 2023 RX 500h with the driver monitor camera. Unlike what most of these reviews are saying, my car does NOT beep at me all the time. It is not as intrusive or annoying as these reviews suggest. The only time it beeps, is when I am not looking forward. But I’m supposed to be looking forward all the time while driving. Right?
Good to know.
I’m not looking forward when checking to see if it’s clear to change lanes or glancing at the GPS. Does it beep then, too?
Now that I'm in the market for a used Toyota, or Lexus, I can't tell you how much I've learned from your channel! Cheers from Florida!

Mr. Nut, I am sorry to see your disappointed face when you talk about the non-charging compartment for the phone 😅. I was disappointed as well when you finished your sentence stating that they did not put a charger there 😞 However, your car review is as always, wonderfully done and informative. 👍👍
very good and informative video! I should've seen such one before I bought my LS500h three years ago! But ... Mr.CarCareNut,I have a very simple and maybe silly question: Can you explain to me, if you please, how come LS500h sold in the USA, model 2018 can be upgraded with Apple Car Play and her, in Europe, it is kind of taboo to ask about this upgrade? How come? Why? What is the difference in those cars? Thanks in advance and have a nice day 🥳
Thank you
I own a 14 LS 460 love the car !!
Hello sir! As mentioned before its a blessing your shop is 8 minutes from my house! Completely unrelated, I want to ask, how often do you see GX460’s in for cam tower and valley plate leaks, and if I may ask whats the price range for each? Whats the typical mileage on odometer you see them come in for this? Thanks a lot!
I think the LS430 was the last car that Lexus used to go after the big European sedans. The LS430 is one of the best sedans ever built regardless of price. However, the market was changing and Lexus changed with it. You have to fish where the fish are. SUV's and CROSSOVERS were growing in sales. Lexus also had a reputation of building boring cars in Europe so Lexus tried to address this with more performance. One of the biggest mistakes Lexus made with the LS 500 is they did not offer a V8 engine. In the LC500 coupe you got a 5.0 liter V8. This is a great engine. In the LS 500 you could only get a V6. The V8 should have at least been an option. I agree with you. The LS 500 is an after thought. It's a shame because if you look at the LC500 you immediately say, what a fantastic car. This proves that Lexus can make the LS great again they just need the will to do it. Cheers!!!
That's been my thought. Put that wonderful v8 from the lc500/is500 into the LS and call it a LS-F.
It will most likely be cancelled essentially going the way of the GS.....and that will be Lexus' fault
The market didn't change, Lexus changed course with the LS. The S-Class, A8 and 7-Series are still what they were years ago. The 5L n/a V8 wouldn't have been a good fit for this car, you need a proper TT V8 with more torque to move a car like this.
I like the LS500 with active rear steering. I was going to get the LS500h until this video. Do you recommend the LS500 F sport?
I'd love to see you find and restore a 2nd gen Avalon!
With the bench seat!
@@Nathan_Jay Yes! I'd love to find a nice 01 or 02 XL base model with the bench. That gets most of the experience, but with less stuff to break 👍
So Mr. Amd What’s your opinion if I wanna purchase used pre owned 2020-2021 ls500 what should I get the hybrid or the non hybrid model after owning my 2014 ls460 for 6 years now??!

You’ll regret that decision
@@mob4ever I know what you mean, but the cold truth is that no car in this class provides both a class-leading experience and Lexus reliability, so you have to choose what you'll surrender. And if you're ponying up for this class, you don't want to surrender a first-rate experience, so I get it.
@@tonysterbenc That sounds good until the problems and issues pile up. Quality should always matter

The bottom front, side, and rear sensors are actually LiDAR sensors. It runs the Lexus Copilot. It’s their level 2 self driving design. Adds about $7,000.
This dude is very smart but shocked he doesn’t know about the tech.
Absolutely brilliant unbiased review. Thank you. As an engineer of such vehicles, it must not have been easy to write that. I have been looking toward finally, heading towards my first LS. In many markets now only the hybrid is available. I am sold on Lexus for Japanese reliability, that brilliant interior Japanese design, it's smooth engine, quietness and most of all, that stonking good KIRIKO glass only available on top trim. However, ive had to make peace with the fact the hybrid is not silent and not smooth. This is a 7yr old car and Lexus are not pricing it attractively. It makes no sense financially, and at that price point, one shouldnt have to make compromises. I dont favor the other luxobarges because of their poor reliability. Nothing holds a candle to Lexus when it comes to flagship (yes they don't have the latest toys and peerless manmade materials sometimes, but that's reflected in price), but theyre not making it easy. Thank you for helping me decide against this. I'm either going for the top trim ES, or having to jump on a European luxobarge till Lexus are back in form.
I don't see how you can say nothing holds a candle to Lexus' flagships, but you're jumping ship? Reflected in price? It's well over 100K loaded. That's just nonsense.
@@MercOne why don't you read the argument and listen to the video before posting asinine comments? The CarNut, ie the Lexus guru, plainly says 'Lexus doesn't care about this car'. As I pointed out, Lexus do not seem to be charging appropriately for a 7yr old model. 100K is absolutely acceptable....if it were true. That's not what they charge in other parts of the world. In the UK it costs more than a new i7, in Hong Kong it costs the equiv. Of 360K USD in takumi trim, and in Australia it's full out of whack. 'Nonsense' because comprehension is apparently above you and your head is in the sand
@@am.6296 What’s over my head is load is rambling bullshit. None of that says anything nor does it make any sense. Like what is the point about this old car and what it costs in 2023? A load of nothing. Seems you’re lost in your own nonsense.

All of those other sensors they added are actually part of the Advanced Drive System option exclusive to new LS/LX - they have almost nothing to do with pre-collision. Hope you were able to experiment with this system before you had to give it back! Similar to Tesla, there are only so many places those LiDAR hubs can be placed, but I agree they stand out like crazy!
