  • Cutting My Subframe! Yamaha XJR1300 Subframe Seat Hoop - Shoogly Shed Motors Episode 61
The PPE is out and the sparks are flying!
Finally begun the fun part of any bike build, chopping, welding and grinding...
A standard seat hoop gets the Shoogly Shed treatment and becomes the main shape of the Yamaha XJR1300 subframe.

Well done dude, always a daunting moment cutting into any frame. May be worth using the scrap metal you get to practice some vertical and out of position welds on the work bench. I’m good at practicing tig up until the point that it’s not right in front of me in a perfect set up and suddenly you are crooked over at an angle and upside down! Looking forward to the progress here!

Same here for upside back to front and awkward position welds . As mentioned in the comments turn your feed down and power to match do not try to do a continuous weld or a long one I've found in the past it creates heat and a larger puddle and under it's own weight it loses that argument with gravity . Smaller welds are better . Less chance of large hot lumps falling off and landing on ya feet or rolling down ya arm . Trust me it hurts when ya get weld splatter in ya ears or down ya neck ..try to leave a small gap between the tubes so the weld can pool between and not on the tubes .

when you are welding vertical weld uphill

Glad I watched this before starting my subframe build, I learned a few things that will come in handy! Nice work

Absolutely text book process and problem solving! Horizontal/inverted mig is just tricky. Play with your wire feed speed and practice on some scrap. If you have the ability to change gas flow rate maybe up it for those situations. Some machines seem to weld those type of scenarios better than others. Very much love the shape!

Looking good - not what I would be doing with it - but that is the great part of a custom build it is they way you want it not others, its going to be a long road but worth it

Turn the power down and turn the wire feed down a little. for upside down work.

I'd be careful where you do your angle grinder as work, as those sparks burn their way into both paint and glass, as do the sparks from MIG welding. You notice this on painted surfaces when tiny little spots of rust appear where the sparks have landed. Get a small bit of glass or perhaps a bottle to do a test on, and you'll see what I mean.

Ah yeah, I'm aware of that. Don't worry, no paint in the vicinity is long-term... the Fazer in the background is due a freshen up...

I'll enjoy watching the progress on this one. I've also got an xjr but scared I'll ruin a good bike trying to convert it

Absolutely. I have the confidence because this bike was a mess anyway!!

Great video. I’m interested to hear from the pros what the technique is for upside down mig welds. I’m a novice welder as well and I’ve left any awkward position welds until my bike is ready to be stripped apart for paint and I will finish those welds when I can manipulate the frame around easier.
