  • Yamaha XJR1300 Tank Modifications Part 1! Shoogly Shed Motors Episode 64
I get instant regret when I begin stripping the XJR tank..! But it had to be done, and the results, plus the new fuel cap, will be worth it in the end!

As a keen teenager I once welded a tank on a GT 185, after properly rinsing and cleaning it 🤨, it exploded and ended up like an oversized rugby ball 😱. Lesson well learned 😂😂😂😂😂

As soon as you took the angle grinder to it I thought Oh No filler but fair play to you for trying to sort it. I am trying to figure out how to slim an XJR tank down so I can use clip on handlebars without smashing my thumbs up, it’s all a learning curve

Dont forget to tighten the new cap to the threaded sleeve before doing your welding tack's, so you have it in the right position. 👍

That must have been one of those "That'll buff right out" accidents.

Amazing….! Keep them coming. You’re doing a great job, you have a great positive attitude. Something we can all learn from.

The only other technique I've seen for dents in metal is tac welding a bolt or something similar in the dents lowest point and trying to pull it to pop the dent out but may be difficult with that sloped part great video as always hope you think of something

That's not a bad attempt and result . A few more hours and a few taps that would come out.. set the mig low and basically tack it in place and just keep working round tacking and fill in the gaps between the tacks . Use an air gun to keep the heat down on the tacks so the panel doesn't warp too much . If the filler hole is big enough you could try an f cramp to see if you can get to that crease . Good luck.

Have a watch of "make it kustom " karl has just done a patch panel repair using a mig

Although not a panel beater myself, I have found that when attempting jobs like this I have more success by pressing the dolly on the edge of the crease on the inside and tapping with the hammer from the outside. Working around the outside edge of the dent and progressively reducing the extent of the dent.
You are less likely to end up with lots of little dents caused by the hammer striking the metal inside at an oblique angle. You have more control of the head of the hammer and can see better where you are aiming the blows. With time and patience it is surprising how close to the original shape even a complete novice can get.

Reckon you have added about 2 litres extra fuel capacity there! Following this with great interest as I also have an XJR1300 (1999) and have started modifying it (not to the extent you are though)

Exactly what I was thinking Mark 😄
Dunno how Euan kept his cool after finding all of that filler under the paint. I'd have had a meltdown!

Well done 👍 you can use your MIG welder and tack on some small bolts or studs on the remaining crease (on the outside of the tank) and use a reverse hammer to pull out the crease. Just be careful to not pull too hard to avoid pulling them off leaving a hole. Best to weld on many small ones, no more than an inch apart, and pull one by one outwards in many iterations.

heat seemed to work for you up to a point. what about getting some sheet metal and use the English wheel to shape something to be welded onto the tank, hiding the dent under it?

Oh man what a pain it the butt that cap was. Its why the bike has taken so long. Fun fact its been painted 3 times now. Also I tried the tig but ended up using the mig as I feel it put in less heat. I think your tank has a much greater chance of not warping being such a small flat area for the cap. As always great music and great video. I love this build dude 🤘🤘

Thanks man! I actually sat and studied your video yesterday in preparation for welding today. Spoiler alert... it's done! More on that later....

Great job on the tank to get it as far as you have, but honestly if it was me I'd bin it and buy the one for £50 below.

@@ShooglyShedMotors Yeah I know what your saying and I respect that but a tank has to be right, it's like the centrepiece on a bike. I've seen a lot of people just not getting it right or having problems down the line. Check out Andys Motorcycle Obsessions YT channel Basket Case build, bike built months down the line and the paint bubbled due to pin holes and he had used a tank liner. Start off with a decent tank and tig weld the cap and line it, belt and braces, less of a challenge I know but definitely the safest option.
      Good luck anyways.
