Could Israel's Iron Beam Replace the Iron Dome?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 чер 2022
- Israel has a new missile defense system! You’ve probably heard of Israel’s famous Iron Dome system which protects against unguided missile attacks. The iron dome system has a few drawbacks though like high costs issues dealing with higher volume attacks.
The new Iron Beam system seeks to solve both problems by augmenting the capabilities of the Iron Dome system. With a cost per kill of around $3.50, this system is dirt cheap. Likely to be the world’s first energy-based missile defense system in full fledged use, the iron beam will help create an all-encompassing defense network capable of stopping anything from UAVs to missiles and more.
The main drawback of this system is that it has a lower effectiveness in low visibility situations because, unlike the iron dome, it uses visuals to target and attack and cannot rely solely on radar to hit a target. Israel plans to deploy the system on aircraft as well in an attempt to circumvent this problem and keep the old Iron Dome up and running too, so that the Iron Beam still has plenty of backup.

As someone who works with high power lasers for a living...
A laser in theory can target anything within a range that does not require energy levels that turn the air into a plasma... effectiveness generally varies depending on a few factors... Temperature, humidity and atmospheric particulates like smoke or vapour... All of those factors contribute to energy loss within the beam as it travels.
Even on a perfect day there would be a physics based maximum limit. This is as I mentioned before because a powerful enough laser can turn the air to plasma... once your laser is doing that, it loses its effectiveness completely and will likely self destruct.
That too depends. Apperantly there's a difference between Chemical-Based lasers and Electric ones upon which the Iron Beam relies. Could you elaborate?
@@yochaiwyss3843 - You’re right in that there are many ways to produce a laser beam.
The main difference between them (other than the method of production) are the elements used to generate the laser.
Depending on the element in use the wavelength of the output laser can be radically different.
An infrared laser by example has a far greater range than a coloured laser of an equivalent wattage.
That being said, even an infrared laser had a theoretical maximum energy density at sea level. Beyond that it is basically powerful enough to superheat the air and turn it to a plasma in an instant.
When you want more range but cant exceed that “plasma threshold”…. What you can do is produce a more powerful laser but with a larger diameter beam. You can then using a specialised mirror focus the beam in such a way that as the beam power degrades so does the beam diameter. This again has its drawbacks, but can grant additional range if you absolutely need it.
Hope that helps.
@@zerg9523 I think so. Thanks!
@@yochaiwyss3843 the iron beam uses electric one, some says you cannot achieve over 100 wats of power with chemical type, so it is useless, and probably the US have electric one as well, i know the us tested chemical laser in the past, but heard they ditched it

Does it work when let's say the is raining cuz laser is light and light breaks as it goes throw rain so it would decrease the amount of energy bring focused on the target
@@fnapFNAP Yeah, just like he says in the video there's the drawback of needing clear line of sight. Clouds, rain, dust etc would all reduce the effectiveness of a laser, that's why it works in combination with the iron Dome, because that's radar guided and can be effective when the iron beam can not
Major drawback of laser system is it can't penetrate if outer layer of missle is protected by some sort of ceramic sheet or any metal which increaes the time to penetrate
